Chapter 6.5

Elisa Maza expected many things to happen after Owen allowed her to enter Naruto's office and speak privately to the man, but she was not expecting to simply sit there and wait while he filled out a few documents without even acknowledging her in the slightest. Any normal situation and she'd have borderline demanded to know why she was asked to come here, her headstrong attitude would be to thank for that, but Naruto Uzumaki wasn't a man to be rude to unless you had a lot of backing on your side.

"Do you know why I've asked you to come here?" Naruto's sudden question caught Elisa by surprise, a bit of worry coursed through her system while her mind attempting to find the correct answer to his question.

"No?" Elisa's tone was slightly higher than it normally was, her back also seemed to straighten ever so slightly when Naruto's sharp gaze fell upon her.

"Was that a question or a statement?"

"A statement," Elisa tried to cover for her slip, this felt too much like being sent to the principal's office after she was caught doing something she shouldn't.

Naruto placed his pen down next to the sheet of paper her had been writing on, his gaze never breaking away from Elisa's, before he casually leaned back in his office chair. He seemed to be studying the detective, his blue eyes rake over every inch of her in a way that was slightly unnerving. It wasn't in a sexual way, not like so many punks and criminals had eyed her up in the past, but more like a king judging the worth of one of his subjects. Elisa didn't know if that made her feel better or more nervous.

"My business partner, David Xanatos, is hiding something from me that I believe to be illegal in nature. Normally I would have such a matter dealt with internally, as to not damage the reputation of this company, but I believe an outside perspective is needed this time," Naruto continued, never breaking eye contact with the dark skinned woman.

"I get that, but why me?"

"Because I've seen your record and have made several inquiries about your personality both on and off the job. You are the type of person that David won't be able to buy and I want any of his crimes to be brought to light," there was a hardness in Naruto's voice that wasn't there before, one that put the detective on edge.

"How much of your support can I count on?" Elisa asked.

"I can start by giving you access to the castle tomorrow night, more access will take time."

"But how much support will you give me if your friend finds out what I'm doing. He's a rich man and, if you're right about his illegal activities, he could go after those close to me," this was one thing Elisa needed to know first, she didn't want her family to be put in danger.

Naruto's eyes narrowed a fraction and he slowly got to his feet, leaning forward with both hands on his desk, "You have my word and my word is my bond. If that's not enough for you, then know I'll place your family under protection for as long as is required. Nothing will happen to them."

Elisa took a deep breath, considering all the options that lay before her, and gave Naruto her answer.
