Session 90
Elevators and I
Elevators.
Out of all the things that Polly could find herself doing, this fell quite low on the list. Heck, the monk was fairly certain in this day and age, such a job had gone extinct.
Currently, she found herself standing in front of a large glass elevator. In the distance, a large 'resort' made from sort of white substance taunted her, inviting her over. But if she attempted to leave her post, all it got her was a swift teleportation back to her post. Yet with each passing glance towards the building, she felt a sense of nostalgia for it. But the name of the place seemed to elude her head, joining in the taunting.
Her train of thought was interrupted though, in the form of two visitors
"And who might you two be?" the monk magi remarked as she took the two in. The person on the left appeared to be some sort of ghost schoolgirl dressed in a white sailor fuku with a red skirt. Her silver hair had been allowed to grow out, while a pair of brown eyes stared towards Polly. The one on the right was of similar nature, being that of digital data. She looked like one of those lady trainers from Pokemon, except with orange hair and empty voids for eyes.
"We are lost souls, just like you." the data lady remarked and let out a snicker. "Unlike you, we know where we need to go."
Polly gave her a confused glance. She was tempted to fire back some rude response, but chose to save it for later. It probably wasn't helped by the fact that the response had caught her off guard.
"What are you talking about?" Polly inquired and got more giggling in return. "Uh… what's so funny?"
"You smell of everyone, yet you are not them." ghost girl added as Polly chose to ignore her. "Maybe that's why you're the one operating the elevator and not the one riding it."
Polly didn't answer and chose to push the button to open the doors, watching the two girls head on in. The doors closed behind them, leaving the monk magi to her own devices.
Of course, it didn't last that long. Especially with the next arrival coming as the elevator came down.
In this case, it was a pair of trenchcoat wearing girls. The only thing really differentiating was the lack of a pinky on one of their hands. Not that it stopped them from holding a gun and camera respectively.
"Did you by any chance see a ghost take this elevator?" the girl on the right inquires, handing Polly a picture of one of the girls from the first pair.
"Yep. She already went up." Polly answered and watched the girl take a deep breath.
"Figures." camera girl remarked and watched Polly operate the elevator. Like the previous duo, they headed inside with another word. Though, the girl with the gun seemed intent on keeping it pointed at the monk magi. Of course, Polly had little time to dwell on it, since the next duo were already arriving.
"You gotta be kidding me." the monk magi thought, finding another pair of girls standing before her. This time, the girls were dressed as a sexy witch and nurse. Strangely, they appeared to be missing a thumb off one of their hands. "Let me guess, you want to go up?"
Both girls gave a nod and watched the elevator come back down.
"Any other words of wisdom?"
Neither girl let out a peep as Polly worked the controls, giving a wave to her as they headed up.
"What's taking so long?!"
"Hurry it up, will you?"
"I'm not getting any younger here!"
Of course, the next female duo walked up. This time, in the form of a cheerleader and a girl with a bastard sword. Of course, the latter seemed to have the patience of a gnat and didn't seemed to like Polly one bit. Though, that didn't explained why it looked like she had a rectangular slit on her stomach.
"The elevator is currently being ridden at the moment. Please wait your turn." Polly explained and watched the girl pull her sword out. "Wonderful."
Watery Grave Punch!
Somehow, she managed to get to a solid jab as the elevator returned. Though, it did let her get a good look at the lack of the middle finger as they headed in.
The next arrivals were a nun and businesswoman, who had decided to keep things on the quiet side. Though, one could wonder why they weren't concerned by the lack of an index finger.
Yet, a nagging feeling seemed to feel Polly. For some reason, she wanted to join them on this elevator, but couldn't seem to bring herself to do so.
"What is wrong with me?!" she thought and closed her eyes, attempting to visualize something she had buried in her mind. But all she found, were the screams of unknown people. Maybe at one point, they had some meaning to her. But now, they were now just sound with no meaning.
"Are you going to let us in?" one of the girls inquire, snapping Polly out of her daze.
"Of course." Polly finally answers and watched the two girls head on through. This time, it was three girls. The girl on the left appeared to be some sort of kung fu fighter and was possibly drunk at the moment. The other two girls appeared to be an couple and had decided to go with one-winged angel costumes for some reasons. Ironically, it was their ring fingers that were missing. Yet, she let them on and waited for the next group to arrive. Which in this case, were an artist and gymnast respectively. Though, they seemed to be missing their index fingers and palms for some reason. It probably wasn't helped by the fact that neither activity could really take off that part of the hand to begin with. Once the elevator had returned to her, she let them on and waited for the next duo arrive.
"If this were an rpg, I would've killed you right now." a voice announced as a sniper rifle partially floated in mid-air. Polly turned her attention to the holder of the weapon, finding another pair of girls. This time, it was a sniper and security guard who were missing one of their arms. At least this missing body part made some sense, I think. Like many of the other girls, they weren't much in the way of talkers. The only words that Polly had gotten out of them was a 'thanks' for operating the elevator and letting them take it up.
The next arrivals were a ninja and a housewife. This time, it was a leg that had been taken from them. Yet they were still able to somehow walk. At this point, Polly had chalked it up to the weird rules of the realm. Like how an elevator made entirely from glass would be capable of having metal buttons that actually work. Or what exactly was pulling the elevator up in the first place.
Her mental pondering quickly shut off, with the arrival of two more girls. In this case, a pair of twins. Which didn't explain the lack of a foot.
"Is this the place?" the two simultaneously asked and Polly gave a nod. "Yay!"
They headed on through, only for the next duo to be right on their tails. In this case, Polly found herself face-to-face with a headless actor and an eyeless librarian. Nonetheless, she worked the controls of the elevator and allowed them on through. Just as quickly as the previous group left, the next one arrived in the form of a businesswoman and a chef. Yet, they appeared to be missing an ear for some reason.
"Here's a tip." the businesswoman remarked and handed Polly a blank card. The duo then made their way inside, giving the monk magi a wave as they headed up.
Afterwards, Polly pulled her pocketwatch out. While the device was never really intended for keeping track of time, it was usually gave one a good estimate of how much had passed. Though, if her memory served her correctly, Fatemon had said the device was once capable of transporting the user back in time. When she asked about what the other pocketwatches did, Fatemon had given her a shrug and made a remark along the lines of 'their power comes from the user'. Whatever that meant, she wasn't quite sure. For the moment, she was content with holding the blank card out in front of her attempting to make out some sort of
By that point, the next duo had arrived. This time it was a scientist and a court jester, who appeared to be lacking a brain and a heart respectively. The elevator had already come down by that point, with Polly immediately letting them right on in. This time, she chose to watch the elevator rise up to its unknown destination, becoming slightly jealous of the other girls.
"There you are." a voice called out as Polly watched a short blonde-haired girl run up. Her skin looked charred, with it seeming to draw her to the pair of darkened blue eyes and the pair of fangs hanging out of her mouth. For some reason, she had chosen a lolita dress for this occasion. "How's Chacha doing?"
Polly took a deep breath and knelt down slightly, mostly so she could be at eye level.
"Quite well, even if she does miss you a little bit." Polly answered and watched the girl walk up and give her a hug. "Uh, what are you doing?"
"You're almost there, honey." the girl whispered. "It may seem like you're running in place, but you're making progress."
Polly slapped her across the face and pushed the girl to the ground.
"To what?" the monk magi shouted as the lolita girl got up. "So what if I some weird reincarnated version of one of your classmates who operates an elevator for some fucking reason. I do not care. I wish for my friends and I to make our own path. Is that too much to ask for?!"
"Who am I to say?" lolita girl remarked and let out a chuckle. "After all, the first step to make your destiny is forgiveness."
"Sorry. Kind of tired of people at the moment." Polly remarked as she watched the girl head on through.
"It's alright, Polly." lolita girl responded. "Your time will come soon enough. Tell Chacha I send her my love."
"Uh… sure."
Polly returned her attention out towards the resort, finding it to be no closer than the last time she had gazed out to it. Something about it seemed familiar to her now, yet she couldn't figure out why.
Of course, her gazing session was interrupted by the arrival of one more person.
Though, to call them that would be stretching it. At best, they had all the features of a human being, but had the body structure of a blob. The only real defining feature was a brown 'ponytail' and a pair of slits where eyes should probably go.
"I'm guessing you're here to take the elevator as well?" Polly inquired and watched the 'blob' shake its body. "Then what do you need then?"
The blob slid forwards a couple inches, pointing its body towards the elevator controls.
"You want to take my place?"
The blob 'nodded' and Polly stepped aside, finding herself standing before the elevator doors.
"Card…"
Polly held out the blank card, only to have the blob to jump onto her.
"Me...us."
Polly took a deep breath, whispering something under her breath. Her attention shifted to the card, which had gone from blank to showing a familiar slime mermaid upon it. At the bottom, the greek phrase 'Synchoreméni Gorgóna' had been stamped on.
"Thank you, Akira." the monk magi whispered. "I'll make sure this ends, once and for all."
She slipped the card and pocketwatch back into her pocket, turning her attention to the elevator doors. She gave the blob one last glance, who gave a nod.
"Go…" the blob answered as the elevator came down and the doors opened up. "Choose your fate..."
"I will." Polly whispered as she stepped on through, taking the elevator downwards into an unknown portal...
Notes:
This was a far easier chapter to write, especially as we near the end of 'Polly's arc'. It also makes sense... trust me on this.
I'll leave the meaning for 'Synchoreméni Gorgóna' up in the air.

Next Time: Aaron gets his own chapter. Finally?
