A/N: okay so this is chapter 3. it's a little shorter, but chapter 4 will definitely be longer. hopefully I can get chapter 4 up within the next few hours for you guys!! thanks for all the support!!
I got back to work and the next few days went by pretty fast. I just fell into a routine, and before I knew it was Tuesday night. I worked most of the day to distract myself from the fact that I was going to talk to my husband's political rival about killing his mistress. This was a bad idea, deep down I felt it. It was too late to back out. Jefferson texted me at 10:30 in the morning to confirm our appointment outside the capital building and I already said yes.
At 4pm, I heard the door open, which means Alex came home. I was confused, Thomas said they had a meeting at the capital building. I didn't want to ask, he didn't bring it up to me and if I asked, he would be suspicious of how I know. Instead of prying about something I shouldn't even know about, I decided to leave my office and go make dinner. He was in the kitchen looking at the mail, perfect to ask him questions about his alleged affair that Thomas mentioned. The only problem was, I have never been one to suspect of cheating. How was I going to do this? I don't even have evidence except for his weird leaving and arrivals to and from the White House… I could play off of this...
He looks up from the bills to me, just standing awkwardly by the side of the kitchen, fidgeting as I do when I am nervous, "Something wrong, Betsy?"
"I wanted to ask you something," I swallowed my fear and went for it, "why do you always wake up early and arrive home late when it comes to work?"
"Betsy, there has been a lot of work in the office lately. Mr. President wants a lot of financial bills passed, and I can't afford to take a break." he looks back at the bills on the counter.
"Alex, I think you're lying to me…" I just barely whisper, but he hears it, and his head snaps up at me.
"Eliza, where is this coming from?" He walks over to me and leads me to the table where we sit his hands on my arms.
I stand up and throw my hands down to get his hands off of me, "Alexander, there is no way that for the past year Mr. President has been trying to pass financial bills that no one knows about. I think you're lying to me, Alex, so tell me the truth."
He buries his head in his hands, "I am lying… I have been having an affair…"
"Who?"
"Maria Renyolds…"
"Why, Alexander? Was I… am I not enough for you?"
"Eliza," He stands up and walks towards me, I shuffle away not making eye-contact.
I rub my hands on my pants, "I am going to go, Alex. Make dinner and take care of the kids."
"I have a meeting to-"
"Tell Mr. President that you can't go, make up a lie. You're pretty good at that" I spit at him as I walk out of my house.
I exhale loudly and I feel the rush of tears overflowing my system. I take out my phone and call who Thomas recommended I call. It rings twice, and then the voice, "Eliza, what's wrong?"
"Thomas said that you would know about his… specialties… Mind if we meet up, I need to talk to you."
"Of course, Eliza. I'll meet you at Loco Parentis in 10 minutes."
"Thank you, Angelica."
"Anything for my baby sister. See you soon."
"See you soon." I hang up and start walking to Hercules Mulligan's diner.
