A/N: It another relatively long one... and also my third update in 24 hours! this is crazy, but I hope you enjoy (please leave criticism if something is off. its almost 2 am where I live!)
I walked into my house, and diverted my attention to my family at the kitchen table to my bedroom. I heard a chair scuff the floor and I shuddered in my skin. Footsteps chased after me, I didn't realize I picked up the pace of my walking. I walk into the bedroom, and pull out my suitcase from under the bed. I hear a gasp coming from the person behind me.
"What are you doing, Betsy?" He asks quietly.
I huff as I walk towards the closet, "I'm going to go to Peggy's for a couple of nights. I can't stay here when I am so upset by your presence."
"Eliza, wait."
He grabs my wrist, I stare into his dark eyes with fire filling mine, "Remove your hand, Mr. Hamilton."
"Eliza, can we talk about this?"
"What is there to talk about, Alexander? What can you possibly say that will fix your mess that you made?"
"I'm sorry, Eliza."
I have to calm myself down, "Alex, if I threw a plate on the ground what would happen?"
"What the hell?"
"What would happen to the plate, God damn it!?"
He cowers in his skin, I feel a wave of satisfaction, "It would break."
"If you apologize to that broken plate, would it be fixed?"
"No…"
"Apply that to our lives, Alexander." I move to continue to pack my clothes up.
"Eliza, please stay."
I turn towards him and take a step forward, "I can't stay here when I can't look at your face without being filled with anger or sadness. I can't do that to myself. You and I both know that if I stay, you will not learn that what you did has consequences. Because if I stay, we will have sex tonight, and I will forget about this and then tomorrow morning you will go to her house again and nothing will happen to you. I can't let you get away with breaking my heart, Alexander. I can't because the thing is, you can't just sleep with people to apologize to them. And if I stay we will sleep together and that wouldn't be a punishment, that is a reward. You will not learn that you hurt me so deeply if I stay." At this point, I am crying. Tears just flow from my eyes without stopping.
"Eliza… go. You're right. Apologies don't fix broken plates and I can't apologize by just sleeping with you, hoping you will forget about this."
I go back to packing up my stuff. When I am done I zip the suitcase. He stands at the door to make sure the kids don't come in and ask what mommy is doing. I'd break down if they saw me like this, scrabbling to get things so I can leave them and him.
"Go stand outside the door, for a moment, please."
He does, without question. I quickly change into a pair of black jeans that are ripped at the knees and a black sweater. I slip on some black combat boots and then open the door.
"I want to reassure you that I will be back. I'm not taking the cowards way out and just leaving you, although you fully deserve that. I'll be back, though. In days time."
"Betsy… I… I love you…" He fidgets with the hem of his tie, still on from his work hours.
"You should have thought about how much you love me before you broke me, Alexander." I pull my suitcase out to the kitchen.
"Alright, kiddos. Mommy is going on a mini vacation, so you will be on your best behavior for Daddy, okay?" My obedient children nod to me, "Alright. I love you guys so much! I'll be back soon!"
I leave, their choruses of 'goodbye' and 'I love you mommy' hit me so hard. I close the door and begin to cry already. I cannot believe that I just left my whole family behind. I left them because of him, remember your purpose, Eliza! I begin my walk down the street to Peggy's house.
When I am only one house short of Peggy's I notice Angelica sits outside, a lighter in her hands. It clicks on and off, her eyes mesmerized by the flame that disappears and reappears within her hands, "You know, that's a fire hazard, Angelica."
"Figured it might be."
"I didn't realize that you were staying with Peggy." I say as I pull my luggage up her narrow path.
"Neither did I. She called me and said that you were staying, so I packed a bag and made my way over. You need all the support you can get right now."
She grabs my bag and wraps me in a hug, "Thank you, Angelica."
"Let's go inside for a minute, say 'hi' to our younger sister before you have to leave to meet Jefferson."
I let her guide me inside to my little sister's house. She uses her foot to kick the door closed, "Peggy, I found it outside. Can we keep it?"
I smack her arm. Peggy comes from out of the kitchen and wraps me into her arms, "Hey, big sis."
"Hey, little sis."
"I hear your man is causing problems."
"He is a problem, let's be real here." Angelica says walking towards the living room.
"She's not wrong." I agree, "He is causing more problems than ever."
"And I hear you are going to Thomas about it…" Peggy says.
"I didn't know that you knew about his special services."
She shrugs, "He told me back in college. He was drunk after a one night stand and told me. I never told a soul, he probably doesn't know that I know."
"I don't think he does, and let's keep it that way. I don't want a hit man to kill me because he thinks I told his secret to my little sister."
"How long before you have to leave to meet him?" Angelica screams from the living room.
"I have to go right now, actually." I hug Peggy, "I'll be back before 2 am, okay?"
"Just walk through the front door when you come back. I hope you're okay with sleeping on the couch. I'll be there with Angelica, full on slumber party!"
"I am, no worries."
"Make sure you take your wallet. He might want you to pay now, especially since your case is more urgent."
"Ok, thanks, Angelica."
"No problem. Don't let the hit man kill you on the way out." She calls after me as I leave Peggy's house.
It was only a 10 minute walk, which put me 5 minutes early to our meeting, but so was Jefferson. When I arrived, he immediately told me to walk with him. I'm so glad that I changed out of my uncomfortable black heels and into these combat boots because his walking is unforgiving in speed.
We walk together for another 10 minutes away from the capital building in silence. Then he pulls me into a dark alley and before I can scream from fear, he puts his hand over my mouth.
"Don't be alarmed, Eliza. Just need to make sure I can get into my secret apartment without issues. And we can't be caught. I don't need more things for Alex to be mad at me for. You can ask questions when we get there, okay?"
I nod, he smiles a crooked grin, "Great. Coast is clear, let's go."
And we continue to move. I follow close behind, but not too close so I don't get run over if he makes a sudden movement. He pulls me into an apartment building and then forcefully leads me into an elevator.
"The black was a nice touch. Angelica recommend that you dress in the dark colors or was that independent choice, Mrs. Hamilton?"
"She recommended it, but I thought it looked nice."
"She's smart. Sometimes I forget that she's done this before. I'm glad she helped you out. God only knows we would have gotten caught if you wore anything brighter than a navy blue." He says as he leaves the elevator to go to his apartment.
It takes a couple more minutes of walking until he stops, and I slam into his broad shoulders. I definitely inhaled some of his curly hair. He puts in his key and turns the knob, and then opens the door wide enough for me to enter.
He follows me in and turns on the light. The walls are lined with different weapons. Mostly guns, a couple of grenades, and an old rifle with a bayonet attached
He exhales, "Welcome to my secret paradise, Mrs. Eliza Hamilton. Please have a seat, but not near the grenades, they are very sensitive and I don't want to have you blow one up. I don't want to clean up your blood and organs any time soon, either."
