That night, Pyra and Mythra sat crumpled against the hospital bed cradling their knees. It was a horrifying prospect to lose oneself. To not know who was thinking what thoughts. It was a struggle to think coherently, let alone determine who was thinking it.
"This isn't fair," Their voice wavered through the inflections of their shared state and Pyra, "Rex has been through so much already. He shouldn't have to decide this."
"I know," A harsher tone left the same mouth, "I know, but it's how it is. He'll pick…" She froze not even entirely sure who she was, "He'll pick Pyra…I know he will."
"B-but Mythra!" The younger Aegis had a slight grip on herself at that moment, "You're the older one!"
"And you're the one he's in love with," A rueful smile graced their lips, "Just…take care of him, and don't feel bad. Think of it as payment for what I put you through."
"N-no! Don't talk like that!" Pyra declared feeling more and more lucid, "I-I won't let you!"
"What?"
"I won't make Rex make that choice," Their core crystal began to glow, "And I won't let you throw away your life!"
"Pyra stop," Mythra struggled to move forcing herself toward the door, "Re–" Her voice cut out as Pyra stopped her.
"Take care of him."
The next morning Rex entered the room with a heavy heart in order to carry out his decision. However, he did not find them in the bed. Looking around frantically, Rex eventually found Mythra huddled in the corner hugging her legs with her face between them. At first, Rex thought this was good news that they had managed to leave their awakened state. Then Mythra looked up.
Her eyes were puffy and red. She had clearly been crying. Crying so long that she thought she had run out of tears. The sight of her like that made Rex's blood run cold. Mythra never cried, let alone outright sobbed. Realization slowly crept up on the driver, but he refused to acknowledge it.
"Mythra," Rex's voice was eerily calm, "What happened?"
"S-she…Pyra made the choice for you," Mythra's voice broke, "She chose me. Why?" Mythra suddenly found a few unshed tears, "Why wasn't it me? She didn't deserve this…."
Rex did not know what to say, so he said nothing. Instead, he numbly fell to his knees and sobbed.
Mythra watched as the crowd left the graveside. Slowly, but surely, everyone left until it was just her and her driver. Rex had insisted on a memorial. Pyra's stone was next to his parents in the Fonsett Graveyard. Mythra thought it was a nice gesture at least.
Mythra still kept to a respectful distance though. Things had been…strained between them since Pyra's…passing. Rex did not blame her, and she knew that. At the same time, it was hard to deny that he had rather had Pyra. He would never say that though. He was still kind to her, and she knew he cared about her deeply…but she was no Pyra.
He tried to put on a brave face, but several times now she had heard him sobbing alone at night when he thought no one would hear. He loved Pyra. As close as they might be, no amount of her power could change that Pyra was the love of his life. In his eyes, there was no one better. Now she was gone, and Mythra was left in her place.
Not that Mythra was not feeling the hole Pyra left as well. For so long they had been connected, and now she was gone. Mythra had been on her own before, but now it was almost stifling. She had grown used to having her sister ever present, but now she felt so…alone.
Her baby sister was gone, and she barely even got to start making up for the horrible situation she had been born in. She deserved so much more. Why could she not just let Rex make the call? Yeah, it would have been hard on him, but at least then he would still have her. She felt like Pyra would have known what to do here, or at least have a better idea. She could have gotten him back on his feet. What could she do?
Standing behind Rex, the two mourners waited out the daylight. It was not a situation either of them wanted, but they were what they had. They would figure something out.
