Note: they did not call in the friends in this one but its Mor Ardain so Morag is there.
Rex laid on his bed, but he found no rest. He tossed and turned. How was he supposed to decide between Pyra and Mythra? Yes, he loved Pyra, and he was almost certain he would pick her if forced to choose, but that made it worse in a way. He felt guilty for picking her. For loving her more. Mythra was like that rough but secretly loving big sister he never had. He…he did not want to lose her either.
His pillow was already wet with his tears as he anguished over what seemed inevitable to come in the morning. He was supposed to kill one of them, but how could he do that? He desperately sought something. A way to save both of them. He went over everything they had said, but he did not know what to do.
That was, until he remembered something that they had said about their core crystal. Something about it not being complete. They quickly stopped what they were saying, but it was enough to figure out that part of the problem was their incomplete crystal causing problems. It was fine most of the time, but it seemed to have caused an error here. So to fix it, someone had to die.
Someone had to die, but Rex realized it did not have to be Pyra or Mythra.
Pyra slowly opened her eyes, not sure of what exactly had happened. Last thing she remembered was them telling Rex about the choice. If she was here, then…
'Mythra?'
'Ngh, Pyra?'
'Mythra? But how can we both….' Pyra slowly brought a hand to her chest and she felt uncharacteristically cold when she felt the once again whole core crystal.
Pyra immediately threw the sheet off of her and darted out the door, "Rex!" Two guards tried to stop her, but she effortlessly threw them off. She continued running down the halls demanding to know what had happened. It was not until Morag found them that Pyra even remotely slowed down.
"Pyra, you need to calm down."
"No! W-what happened to him?"
Morag sighed, "Follow me."
Pyra did not feel much better as she followed along. The Inquisitor led the Aegis into a vacant research room. Well, mostly vacant save for the mass under the sheet.
"N-no," Pyra's knees felt weak.
"He came in to make his decision, and he made it alright. By the time anyone knew what was going on…it was too late. There was nothing we could do." Morag did not have much else to add. She decided that it would be best to give them some time, "I will leave you alone for now."
Pyra started making a few, small tentative steps forward. 'No, no, no, no, no!' With a shaky hand, Pyra pulled the sheet back, and she felt her heart shatter upon seeing his face. She reached down and touched his forehead. She was shocked by how cold he already was as tears started streaming freely.
"Rex…why?" Pyra sobbed as she cradled his body. She could not take it. He was dead because he wanted to save them. It was too much for the younger Aegis to bear at that time. It was too much as her circlet and core crystal lit up much like Mythra's had roughly 500 years ago.
Mythra pulled her cloak tighter as she walked down the busy street with a simple bag in her arms. She had almost lost track of how long she had been on her own. Pyra had sealed herself away much like she had all those years ago, and Mythra had barely kept in touch with the old party.
It was a lonely life, but at least they were not hurting anyone. Mythra missed Rex, and she missed talking to Pyra, but this was life she supposed. She was coping. Practicing her cooking and the like. She worked with the Garfront Mercenaries to make ends meet. It was a life.
Not the one she wanted, but it was a life.
A/N: So there you have it. Next one should be at least somewhat less depressing.
