Iruka was finishing making dinner which consisted of rice, chicken stir fry, edamame, vegetable tempura, a garden salad with ginger dressing, and of course dessert which was a butter Bundt cake. He looked over to the entrance of the kitchen when he heard an amused chuckle.

Kakashi eyed the serving plates that lined the counter, "How is it that you're the nervous one?"

Iruka frowned at Kakashi and started washing the pots and pans in the sink, "How are you not?" he half-heartedly glared when Kakashi snatched away a vegetable tempura and hummed in approval. He continued frowning, "Good?"

Kakashi hummed and nodded, "Very good." He took a few serving plates that were filled with food, balancing them with ease, "We have so much," he said with a chuckle.

"Well, good thing Naruto is a bottomless pit."

Kakashi reentered the kitchen and took more serving plates, "You make a very good point." He leaned over and gave Iruka a kiss on the cheek before going back to the dining room.

Iruka finished washing the pots and pans, and turned to lean back on the counter as he dried off his hands with a kitchen towel. He furrowed his brows at Kakashi who gave him an amused smile in return, "How are you so calm?"

Kakashi shrugged and closed the distance between them, gingerly placing his hands on Iruka's waist, "I just am."

Iruka squinted at Kakashi and eyed his unmasked face. He smoothed his hands over his husband's chest, noting the turtle neck he opted to wear. One he knew had a built-in mask, and vaguely wondered if he wore as a comfort mechanism, "Maybe that's why I'm so nervous. I'm carrying it for the both of us."

Kakashi chuckled and gave Iruka a chaste kiss, "Dinner smells amazing, by the way."

Iruka gave Kakashi a smug smile, "I know," his gaze moved from Kakashi to over the older man's shoulder, and then back, "They're here."

"I know," he said back softly and casually turned to look at Minoru and Naruto, a smile on his lips, "Just in time."

Iruka was trying not to laugh at the look on Naruto's face. One that was a mix of shock, curiosity and a scowl. He was trying so hard that tears formed at the corners of his eyes.

Minoru smiled in his attempts not to laugh. He looked from Kakashi who was looking at Naruto, to Naruto who was openly gaping. He cleared his throat, "It smells amazing, Iru-dad."

"Thank you, Minoru," Iruka said with a bright smile, "Naruto…" his son-law didn't move, "You okay?"

Naruto blinked and looked at Minoru, "What?"

Minoru raised his brows in amused confusion and glanced at his dads, "Need help with anything?" He tried to ignore the elephant in the room.

Kakashi's amused gaze moved from Naruto to Minoru who gave him a questioningly look, "I believe there's iced tea in the fridge. Could you grab the glasses?"

Minoru nodded and moved to the cabinet and shot Iruka a look that asked "Why?"

Iruka gave his son a soft smile and took the Bundt cake that was still on the counter, "Naruto, I hope you came hungry!"

Naruto had to mentally shake himself and looked at Iruka, trying to laugh, "I'm always hungry."

Minoru laughed, taking the tea out of the fridge, "That is very true."

Kakashi chuckled and followed Iruka out of the kitchen and to the dining room, "Now I'm wondering if we have enough."

Naruto looked around the kitchen as he was looking for something, "Did…did that just happen?" He looked at the younger man, and frowned when a thought occurred to him, "Did you know he was going to do that?" He whispered suddenly.

Minoru shook his head, "No, I had a feeling…but no, I didn't know he was going to do that tonight. I'm surprised as much as you are!" he hesitated, "Well…not as much as you…"

Naruto cleared his throat, "Okay, it's fine." He helped Minoru with the iced tea, "This is fine." He nodded at himself and followed Minoru to the dining room, and he found himself trying not to look at Kakashi.

And as if sensing the challenge, Kakashi kept asking him to hand over plates of food. Kept asking him frivolous questions. Kept taunting him. To much of Minoru's amusement, Kakashi had turned the situation into a game. And he couldn't help but smile at the level of comfort that his dad was showing. Looking at Iruka, who was smiling and shaking his head in a fond manner, told him that he felt the same.

Minoru narrowed his eyes at Kakashi as he took a bite of a tempura. The look that he got back somehow reassured him. He realized that this gesture, this decision, albeit not an easy one, wasn't forced. That it felt right. His expression softened with a smile and he looked over to Naruto who was trying oh-so-very-hard to be casual about the whole situation, "Naruto," cerulean eyes looked over at him, "What was the first thing you noticed about Kakashi-dad?"

Naruto's brows furrowed and he instinctively glanced at Kakashi, and then back to Minoru, "I…uh…" He searched the younger man's eyes, trying to read the situation and noticed the calm in them. They were telling him relax. "Hmmm," he looked at Kakashi then. Really looked at him. The somewhat half-lidded look from the uncovered eye, the narrow nose, the scar that seemed to travel further down his cheek than he thought it did, the small smile on his mouth. Kakashi looked right back at him and quirked a silver brow. "You look a lot younger than I thought you would."

Kakashi's expression dropped to a deadpanned look, "…How old do you think I am?"

Naruto opened his mouth to respond but thought best not to. He looked at Iruka who gave him an amused smile and then to Kakashi, "Are you younger than Iruka?"

Iruka snorted. Kakashi glared at him.

Minoru laughed. Naruto tried not to.

Kakashi sighed, "I don't know if I should feel offended or flattered," Iruka rubbed his back in a soothing gesture.

Naruto chuckled, noticing that Kakashi's face was a lot more expressive than he expected.

"You two go on ahead to the backyard, I'll bring out dessert," Iruka said with a warm smile.

The moment they stepped outside to the backyard Naruto breathed in a fresh breath of air and couldn't help but laugh when a hand rubbed his shoulder, "I…was not expecting that."

Minoru smiled and planted a kiss on whiskered cheek, "You handled it very well…after your initial reaction, but a smooth recovery!"

Naruto groaned and pressed a hand on his forehead, "I was trying to be respectful – but it's hard! All my life – up until now – I've known Kakashi as masked Kakashi. That's just who he was! That's who he is! Mask. Kakashi."

An amused smile tugged on Minoru's lips, "I could only imagine the shock." He looked around the backyard, at the string light that started to shine brightly against the setting sky, "I only had a feeling he might do this when he said something the other day," he looked up in thought, "he said something along the lines of 'You know, I think of Naruto as a son'." He looked at Naruto, a bothered look on his face, "Just randomly. Completely out of context. I spent days trying to figure out the underneath the underneath of what he said." His frown deepened, "Days."

Naruto chuckled, "What hinted that he meant this?"

Minoru looked back up at the sky, "I remembered back when they first adopted me. There was no transition period of him being with and without his mask. It was just natural. Simple. He wore it in public, and didn't where it at home. No hesitation." He looked at Naruto, a fond smile on his lips, "He didn't wear it when he was with his family. He doesn't wear it with those that he loves."

Naruto moved his gaze out to the backyard in thought. It had been about two months since their wedding. Since he became Iruka's and Kakashi's son-in-law. Kakashi showing his face to him wasn't something he did off-handedly. It wasn't something casual. It was something that spoke volumes – more than he could wrap his around. It was like Minoru said, it was about the "underneath the underneath". His expression dropped and he looked at Minoru, "Is he phasing me?"

Minoru snorted unexpectantly and laughed at the way Naruto laughed in response, "Phasing?" He shook his head and wiped at the corner of his eye, "Naruto, he's letting you know that he sees you as his son-in-law."

Naruto narrowed his eyes, and dropped his voice to a whisper, "Is this him telling me that if I ever hurt you or something he's going to Chidori my ass?"

"Don't give me a reason to," Kakashi said, leaning on the doorway.

Naruto's expression suddenly turned serious as he looked over to Kakashi, "I would never."

Kakashi chuckled and stepped out to the backyard, "Oh, I know that." He looked at Naruto, "I don't think I'll ever have a reason to, how do you put it, ah, 'Chidori your ass'."

Iruka came out to the backyard with the Bund cake balance on one hand, plates in the other, "I didn't even ask if anyone still has room for dessert."

"I always have room for dessert," Kakashi, Naruto and Minoru said almost in unison.

Iruka shot the trio a mocked surprised look, "Well, excuse me." He set the cake and plates down on the wooden picnic table, smiling at Minoru as he slid onto a bench, "One of your favorites."

Minoru hummed in approval, "But I don't discriminate."

Kakashi sat on the opposite bench with a soft sigh, "Perfect weather too."

Naruto took a seat next to Minoru and smiled when he felt a hand pat his thigh in a reassuring gesture. He looked around the table, at Iruka who was playfully teasing Kakashi. Kakashi who kept asking for a "bigger size". Minoru who fondly shook his head, a smile on his lips.

He soaked it all in. This love. This family. This family that always welcomed him, always had a place for him. But now, for some reason, it felt different. Different in a way he couldn't name. But he wasn't going to bother trying to figure out the underneath the underneath of it all. All that mattered was these moments.

These moments filled with so much love and happiness.
