Obi-Wan shook his head in despair, "No, no, no, no!" He frantically rummaged through the box, searching for the data.
"Lose something?"
Obi-Wan's head shot up to see Anakin standing in the bedroom doorway, the data stick in his head.
"You need to find a better hiding place."
Completely disregarding that it was a frivolous use of the Force, Obi-Wan summoned the USB from Anakin's hand. "No. You need to learn not to snoop around in other people's rooms…. What do you want Anakin?"
"You're a fugitive."
"… What?"
Anakin frowned, "The Chancellor made the announcement a few minutes ago. I think the Council are speaking about it now."
Resisting the urge to groan, Obi-Wan nodded in understanding. "And let me guess… you want to know why?"
Silence.
"Honestly Anakin… I have a bad feeling about all this." Obi-Wan got to his feet, "Let's just say I'm sticking my nose where it doesn't belong." He held up the data stick, "And it all starts with this."
Anakin stared at it for a moment, before he smirked, "So… let's find out. I'll get R2."
…
R2 beeped, as Anakin frowned in confusion, "He says these files are double encrypted. You said this is from our last mission?"
"Yes."
"Well, they were clearly hiding something."
Obi-Wan sighed, "Can he hack into it? Remember, as soon as we plugged that in, there's a chance our location is going to be tracked."
"It's R2! He's way smarter than most tracking programs. He's going to trick it into thinking we have official clearance, which should give us a few extra minutes." As if on cue, there was a PING, "See, he has a location!"
"On Coruscant?"
"Hmmm, right on the outskirts of the main city." Anakin clapped his hands together, "I'll get us a speeder."
…..
"This looks like a dead end." Anakin sighed, when they reached the location, "R2 isn't reading any life signs or heat signatures."
Obi-Wan ignored him, continuing to look around, heading over to a building on the right. Slicing through the lock, he headed into the building, followed by Anakin and R2.
"What is this place?"
"I don't know." Obi-Wan whispered, looking around at what seemed to an office building. He moved into an aisle, feeling a breeze coming from between the shelves. Using the Force, he moved the shelves to one side to reveal an elevator, "Can R2 get this working again?"
"It's a little old-fashioned, but sure."
Thankfully, R2 was able hack into the elevator and after they entered, it started to descend. At the bottom, the doors opened to reveal a dark room which, when lit up, highlighted a room full of databanks and computers.
"All this stuff looks decades out of date." Anakin commented.
Obi-Wan nodded in agreement, glancing around until his gaze fell on a data port. "R2, can you access the main system from that?"
R2 beeped a little unsurely, moving forwards and plugging himself in, booting up the central computer.
'Initiate file systems?' the computer asked.
R2 beeped a positive sound, and soon a number of files appeared on the screen, which Obi-Wan had a read over, eyes widening at what he read.
"It's all about the Sith…. And how to make them."
"Make a Sith?" Anakin frowned, as Obi-Wan nodded.
"Some sort of experiment. According to these files, it's an ongoing experiment, with almost twenty-two 'missing' Jedi having being taken from the battlefields. Almost all of them died during the process…. Only one survived."
"Brainwashing Jedi into being Sith?" Anakin made a face, "Impossible."
"Not necessarily…. If it's been through trauma, the mind might not be deal with the Sith's methods of brainwashing."
Anakin didn't look convinced but let the matter drop. "So… only one survived?"
"Hmmm… Darth Khylrus. And he has quite a few kills to his name. Including some high-ranking politicians." Obi-Wan read the file further, "The files mention The Project a lot… apparently Darth Sidious has his fingers in every part of it."
"So… the intended targets…"
"… Might not be the true targets."
For a moment, they stood there in silence, before Anakin turned to Obi-Wan. "The Sith… Dark Khylrus. He's a brainwashed Jedi, right? Can it be undone?"
Obi-Wan shook his head, "I think it's very unlikely."
R2 then squealed, sliding back from the console as it popped and began to smoke.
"Right… that's the end of that then."
And then the Force shuddered all around them, prompting them to both tense.
"That… doesn't feel good." Anakin muttered, "R2?"
BEEEEEEPPPP
"Missile incoming. Great."
Obi-Wan ran towards the doors, which had started to close after the computers shorted out.
"Who sent them?!"
"… The Senate."
Obi-Wan looked around frantically, before spotting a floor grate, using the Force to wrench it up. "COME ON!" He ordered, as R2, Anakin and himself jumped into the pit, replacing the grate just as the roof above them exploded into flames, sending piece of concrete raining down on top of them.
The last thing Obi-Wan remembered was a searing pain on his forehead… and then darkness.
