The Angel's Demon

Chapter 5: Unfolding

"Estate?! Haa don't make us laugh Dante it's more like welcome to the dump known as Devil May Cry." Angela heard two female laughs one was an adult and the other was of a little girl. Dante shrugged and walked in, Angela walked in behind him and noticed the source of the laughing.

"Care to show a little more respect for this humble establishment?" Dante argued.

Huddled over a pool table was a chins length, raven haired woman and a fringe reaching to her eyebrows, she has a horizontal scar on her nose, she is heterochromatic: her left eye being a shade of red and her right eye being bluish-green. She imposed a lot of authority and a not to happy vibe when Angela walked in. As opposed to the little blonde haired girl with blue eyes, she was wearing a very girly pink dress and she was in awe as she looked at Angela.

The woman placed her hand on her hip holster, finger ready on the trigger and furrowing her expression. "Cool it Lady, damn you're acting scarier than most days." Dante turned to look at Angela who seemed fearful as she gazed at Lady. "This is Angela Dumont, she'll be staying here so don't go killing her off because you would be killing my job." Lady relaxed her posture and looked at Angela, evaluating her.

She didn't look like a threat but her peculiar appearance was something she would get to the bottom of. "Angela, hmm…" Lady came towards her and stretched out her hand, "I'm Lady."

"Nice to meet you." I think, Angela said her voice quivering. Lady shook her hand firmly and as best Angela could she shook it trying not to demonstrate fear.

"What about me Dante!? Aren't you going to introduce me!" The little girl screamed at Dante who was already laid back at his desk chair, feet upon his desk and snoozing, his face was covered by a magazine. "Uhhh, you're such a pain and totally not a gentlemen." She pouted and came walking towards Angela with her head high and with lady-like modality.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Angela, I'm Patty Lowell." Patty was blushing as she stretched her hand out and taking a glimpse of Angela, she was just incredibly beautiful and those wings just complemented her, funny thing is her name is Angela and she is the exact representation of an angel, Patty thought.

Angela felt more comfortable with Patty and she shook her hand, "It's nice to meet you Patty." Patty looked up at her, even her voice sounded like a beautiful melody on a piano. Patty just sort of stared at Angela in amazement, Lady noticed that and it seemed unnatural, "Patty why don't you show Angela were to put her stuff." Lady said turning to look at Angel furrowing her eyebrows.

"There is only one room and that's Dante's." Patty said thinking.

"Don't worry, I find the couch to be a far more heavenly place to get some shut eye." Dante said, now awake and somewhat recuperated from his nap.

"Okay, Angela follow me." Patty said running to the stairs.

"Excuse me." Angela said looking at Dante and then at Lady who narrowed her eyes towards her. Angela quickly looked away, picked up her bag and followed Patty up the stairs.

Lady walked up to Dante, feeling outraged, "You brought home a demon?! Are you crazy, do you take demon refugees now?! Or is it because she's a pretty demon and you've been having trouble finding-"

"I said she wasn't a threat, she doesn't even know how to control her powers, besides there is an intriguing mystery behind Angela and I want to get to the bottom of it." Dante interjected, Lady glared at him still not convinced. "I saved her from a demon this afternoon. The demon in the alley called her a Dacelus."

Lady was surprised, her interest had been peaked, she knew some facts about the race due to the stories her father had once told her about. "That's impossible, the lineage was wiped out around the same time Sparda defended the humans which is what, more than a thousand years ago?" Lady said puzzling her chin, trying to remember more.

"Well, I guess that piece of information we got was wrong, I have not doubt Angela is a Dacelus. She'll probably want to know more about her heritage, do you have anymore books on the subject?" Dante asked looking at Lady who was still deliberating some thoughts on the matter.

"You know that me looking for information is gonna cost you." She said seriously.

"I was expecting to be off the hook this time but I guess it was too much to hope for, so expect the payment in a few months or years as usual." He said sighing.

"What a lame joke but since I happen to have some spare time I'll see what I can find." Lady said, still thinking about the Dacelus. She turned around and the sky started to become dark than it already was, she pulled back her sleeve to look at her watch, it was 5:47. "Well I'd better get going, I have some business to take care of." She said grabbing the keys from Dante's desk.

"For some reason the demons are getting restless. So just watch yourself out there." Dante said, his tone was dead serious. These past weeks the demons even though not much of a challenge were appearing more frequently and in packs, having it to do with Angela he still didn't know. The only thing that was for sure is that they were searching for her.

Lady scoffed, ready to walk out the door she paused, "as if, you'd be all to happy if I died, there wouldn't be anymore debt to pay."

"I'm not that messed up, I care about my ladies." He said a smile visible in his face.

"Right." Lady gave a lazy wave and left, her motorcycle making a loud hum as she sped off.

"So Angela, why are you staying here?" Patty was just to curious, she couldn't even hide it. Angela didn't mind Patty was helping her out by moving some junk that was laying around in Dante's room.

"I want to understand what's happening to me." She said picking up some records that were scattered around the room and putting them into a box that she found.

"You didn't always look like this?" Patty said cleaning Dante's table and clearing it so it was suitable for use once more.

"No, I was normal, just a human with a normal life." She finished saying in whisper. She placed the box in a corner and began to pick up and stack some pizza boxes.

Patty noticed Angela's downcast state and even though she didn't know her that well, no one should be unhappy everyone should live there life happy, "I know," Patty said springing up, it startled Angela, "I made some beef stew, I love eating this on rainy days, come on!"

"What about the stuff we have to clean out?" Angela said looking at the stack of 25 pizzas that she had picked up.

"We'll do it later." Patty grabbed Angela's hand and dragged her down the stairs.

Dante was looking over some magazines they brought him when he heard Patty's laughter getting louder, and the quickening footsteps. He saw the duo rush into the kitchen. He smiled at the sight, Patty was always in a high spirit, no matter what she had gone through and even if she was quite bossy at times, she was still a great kid.

Patty reached for a bowl on the cupboard and grabbed a large spoon and began to pour the soup. She handed the full bowl and a spoon to Angela and smiled, "I hope you like it but be careful it's hot." Angela nodded. Patty served a side bowl but then she left with it.

Angela could hear the conversation outside:

"Here you go Dante, I expect you to drink all of it!" She ordered.

"No, thanks I'll order a pizza." He said.

"Oh no you don't, this is better for your health than that pizza, it's unhealthy Dante for Pete's sake, how many time to I have to tell you!" She screamed. Angela giggled and thought, these two fight like siblings.

"Okay, okay! Geez I'll drink it just stop being so loud you brat."

"Good! Oh no it's that late already I have to get to the orphanage!" Patty exclaimed she rushed back into the kitchen, Angela was more than halfway done with her soup and smiling.

"Thank you so much Patty and be safe as you walk back." Patty grinned back blushing, she quickly took off her apron, folded it and placed it in a cabinet.

"Bye Angela see you tomorrow!" She said running out. Angela finished drinking her soup and put the plate in the sink, she went back out to check on Dante. He was already done with a soup and eating some pizza. Angela took his bowl, "if you're still hungry feel free to grab a slice and thanks."

"Thanks but I'm full." She smiled back and walked back to the kitchen to wash the dishes.

Angela finished and even though it was still early night she was exhausted, both emotionally and physically so she decided to turn in. She walked back out and saw Dante cleaning his gun. "goodnight Dante." She said turning for the stairs.

"Don't worry your mother loves you more than she might let you know at this moment, she'll come around. Goodnight." Angela was rendered speechless, she gave a light smile towards Dante and walked up stairs. Dante always wanted to believe that a mother's love was unconditional. He wanted to believe a mother's love is pure because his own mother sacrificed herself to protect him.

Angela opened her blue eyes lazily and sat up on the bed, it was still really dark, she turned to look at a clock there was on the desk and it read, 10:30 am. She had slept more than usual, with the sky being dark the day gave off the same gloomy feeling. She got up from bed and opened her bag to get a fresh pair of clothes, she always liked to take showers before anything else.

After the shower she stayed there a while drying her wings with a towel. She left the bathroom and walked down the stairs, Patty was there moping the floor but her expression wasn't too happy. Dante was huddled over the pool table playing. "Morning." She said breaking the silence

Patty looked up and smiled, "Hi Angela!"

Dante stopped playing to look at her, "Did the sandman treat you well?"

"He did thanks for asking." Angela thought that Dante had a weird way of saying things but nonetheless he was a nice guy.

"Angela, Lady said she would be here later today, she is bringing the information that I promised you." He said.

"Thank you Dante for everything you are doing for me." Angela bowed slightly in gratitude. Dante was surprised by her humility, she was a nice girl that had been dealt a shit hand. She stood up once more and smiled at him, it was genuine and breathtaking…

During most of the day Angela had spent lounging alongside Patty who was teaching her how to play poker and black jack. It was something interesting for Angela and it kept her mind preoccupied, she was slightly afraid of the information Lady was going to present her with. Even Dante joined into the card game but ended up cussing under his breath half the time because he didn't win a single time out of the 20 games they played.

"Well I'd better get going, before it gets any darker." Patty said putting on her coat, "I'll try to come by tomorrow but if not I'll see you the day after."

"Alright Patty take care." Angela said seeing her to the door. She watched Patty walk along the long alley way up until she reach the street, turned right and disappeared. She closed the door and walked back to the table to clean up the cards and chips. Dante was leaning back taking a drink of a beer he had just opened when there was a knock on the door.

They both turned to look at it, there was another knock. Angela was going to go open it but Dante grabbed her hand and shook his head. He passed by his desk grabbing his guns and walking towards the door to look through the keyhole, he let out a brief chuckle. He opened the door and in came Lady with an old grayed book in hand.

"I thought you weren't going to show up." He said walking back to his desk and putting the guns back in the cabinet.

"Shut up, this was really hard to find and I spent most of the night reading this book so I could give you guys a summary of what I read just so you know because I know you Dante, you don't do effort." She said then she looked at Angela who was ready and waiting. "Are you ready." Lady said taking a seat two feet from her, Angela took up some space because of her large draping wings.

"Alright, let's hear it." Knowing the truth about herself, about this race she belonged to was important to Angela, she wanted to know what the Dacelai were like even though she was nervous.

"The book resumed states that The Dacelai were a legendary demon army, not so much known for their ability to fight but their natural form of persuasion. Descendants of angels fallen from grace, The Dacelai were used to battle the heavens but they are more commonly known for their chaos caused among the human race. They are known as beautiful creatures possessing natural beauty and angelic features making them irresistible especially to the faint of heart. A human who would encounter a Dacelus would just become obsessed an infatuated with the creature willing to do anything to please it. That is why when Sparda decided to defend the human race the Dacelai fought in opposition, their source of power being the humans that lived to please them and without that source they were nothing. Of course they were powerful possessing a certain amount of abilities but still they were no match. So they have been extinct for thousands of years now. That is until you proved that theory wrong." Lady said handing her the book.

Angela was in shock, the being that she now was had the soul purpose of being deceitful. She stood up and took the book and flipped through the pages but out of the many illustrations in the book there was one that struck her the most, that made her drop the book and run out of the house was one of two Dacelai, one was seducing a human while the other was stabbing him in the back.

Tears were slipping down her face, why had she become a monster, it didn't benefit anyone whatsoever, this power could only harm. She stood there in the dark wishing she was somewhere else, alone like Capulet Park, it was peaceful and she could think. She closed her eyes and heard someone yell her name before a strong wind engulfed her.

"What the hell she was just here!?" Lady said scratching her head. Dante stood at the door a serious expression, he went back inside to get his gear ready, he had to find her and fast, if she was anywhere out in the open the demons would smell her out and take her. Just as he was about to leave, the phone rang.

In his haste he walked past it and so Lady answered it. "Hello?" Lady listened and wide eyed with surprise, she hung up and ran after Dante.

"Dante!" She yelled. He stopped in his tracks. "It was Morrison, something's happened…"

Cliffhanger, sorry I couldn't resist! :D

Sorry if this chapter was a little slow at the beginning, I wanted to introduce Patty and Lady into the story as well. I wanted to show the building and reaction to Angela from the other characters and how she is adjusting to her surroundings.

Yeah, so The Dacelai weren't all that nice, but you readers will learn why Angela is a Dacelus in an upcoming chapter.

Thank you so much to all of you who reviewed! You guys are amazing, I'm so grateful.

Until the next update, which hopefully won't be too long! ;)
