He who haunts the attic chapter 16 Stay By Maurice Williams And The Zodiacs
That night.
"eight hundred years". Sue shook her head, her eyes full of fascination. "you've been alive for eight hundred years…. It isn't an easy thing to fathom".
"I've been around for eight hundred years…..alive… not so much". Alistair said with a little shrug.
small flashback.
Sue had gotten home from work and the first thing she saw walking through her front door was her daughter sitting on the sofa, with the arm of a vampire around her shoulders. The cold ones stare remained straight ahead at first, not looking at the older women. But Leah got up and untangled herself from her mate at noticing her mother come in and slowly made her way to her.
"mum".
"Leah… is this?". Sue's voice trailed off.
Alistair's head slightly tilted her in their direction but wasn't really looking at them.
"Yeah, mum listen". the she wolf nervously rubbed her hands together. "you don't have to like…. Be worried for your safety. He's not gonna…".
"eat me".
"I was gonna say be any trouble….. but yeah he isn't gonna eat you either".
"what's he like?". Sue mouthed to her daughter.
"he's great you'll love him". Leah mouthed back as she took her mother's hand and led her in to the living room. "mum…". They stood in front of the sofa as Alistair got up. "this is Alistair….. my mate".
"charmed". He tried to smile at her as best he could, while reminding himself not to show teeth. 'I'm not lookin' to scare her, though I'm sure my smile is doing that for her. I haven't fake smiled at another person since I was a human, at social events.
"well, it's nice to meet you". Sue slowly met his hand and suppressed a shiver and her warm hand met his ice-cold one.
end of small flashback.
After a few moments of idle chit chat, Sue sat on the Barcalounger, that was known in the house as Harry's chair. Leah and Alistair sat on the long sofa, the tracker sat up straight feeling still uncomfortable as Leah more comfortably sat next to him while resting her head on his shoulder. And from there they just talked, mainly with her mother asking Alistair about his life.
Seth and Jake entered the home about half an hour after Sue got home. Leah jumped up and speed-walked over to them, leaving Alistair and Sue along, awkwardly sitting in the living room. They had not yet told their mother about the early events of that day. 'I don't want to tell her just yet, she's only just met Alistair and that was overwhelming enough. She doesn't have to know what Sam and Jared did this morning…. or at least not today. another wolf attacking their imprint isn't something that we'd be able to keep from the elders for long. It wouldn't surprise me if Billy already knew. It all went down at his house. The she wolf made it over to them and began to whisper. "what happened?. Where's Sam?. what did you do with him?".
"We took him to the Cullen and had Carlisle look at him". Jacob gazed before her to see Sue talking with the vampire. The alfa looked back at his beta, grabbed her arm, and pulled her deeper in to the kitchen. 'less of a chance for Sue hearing'. He thought. "Lee we may have a problem".
"and it's that Sam's an asshole". Seth huffed.
"Lee we tried to talk him out of his own bullshit as best we could…".
"but he's too much of an asshole". Seth huffed once more.
"We need to figure out how to deal with this because he isn't gonna let this go. Lee, we can't wait this out, this isn't something he's just gonna get over. Sam's dead set on proving that there is no imprint. That Alistair's just done something to you, to your mind".
Leah bit her lip….. hard. She squeezed her hands in to fists tightly and shut her eyes. "I need to drink". The she wolf fan over to the kitchen tap and shoved her head under. She didn't see the point in getting a glass. She let the cold water drip over her head and through her hair. 'don't turn…. Don't turn…. Don't turn….. don't turn….'. she breathed in and out trying not to transform in to her wolf. 'don't turn…. You'll mess up the kitchen again. remember how long it took you to clean it last time?.'
"look Leah…. we will handle it. I don't want you to stress out".
"because Sam's an asshole".
"oh my god Seth, yes, it has been established that Sam is an asshole. So shut up already".
"where is he now?". now that Leah was down cooling off and knew she wouldn't be transforming in the middle of the kitchen. The she wolf still remembered how long it took her to clean it all up the last time.
"why?".
"because I wanna beat him up?". she said sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
"so….. I know that this is your classic Leah attitude….. but as the guy who hast to keep you safe and keep the peace…. I'm gonna have to ask you… your joking right?".
"partially". She crossed her arms.
"good enough for me, I don't know where he is. He and Jared jumped out of the doctor's office window and ran off in to the woods. He may have gone to the elders to complain. I wouldn't put it past him".
"why would he do that he knows the elders aren't gonna do anything. I told him so myself that the elders were the ones who said Alistair could stay with me. I don't know what he could possibly say to them to make them change their minds, but I don't think it's gonna work". she cracked her neck.
"We could try talking to him again".
"Jake that's not gonna work, if he's going to the elders even after knowing it wouldn't be doing him any good he's too far gone".
"well then we can beat it in to him can't we. He used violence against my sisters…. So we use violence against him".
"Seth…".
"he gets to attack you and what do we do?, we take him to the god damn doctor".
"Seth he knows not to do it again…".
"no, he doesn't Jake. he knew not to do it the first time and he still went after them. we could sit him down and tell him again but that's gonna do fuck all. unless do actually do something to him, to show him what's happens when you step out of line. For a guy who's meant to be such a big stickler for the rules, he has no intentions of following them".
"I have to agree with you brother?".
"Alistair". Leah turned around to see her imprint had snuck up on them. "where's mum?".
"she went to the bathroom. I don't think Sue really had to go, I think you left us alone together and either have an idea how to be alone together. I don't blame her though, if I thought it wouldn't make it awkward I'd thank her".
"Ohh we all feel so bad for you?".
"hush Seth". Leah shushed him. "what do you mean you agree with him?".
"I mean I watched as that man jumped on you, I saw him bite you, the son of a bitch tried to choke you. and all I could do was nothing, I couldn't do anything. All cos I was stuck under that wander friend of his. I don't care if he comes for me, I'm already dead… it's you I want to keep safe".
"and you don't have to worry about me. I'm a wolf remember, and I'm far more capable of defending myself against him than you are defending yourself against him. I'm not worried about him for me. I know you want to keep me safe and I love you for that". she placed both of her hands on either side of his face. brushing her hands up again his scratchy beard. " but I'm gonna need you to trust me, if anything happens, or if anything were to happen, you don't have to stress…. I got this".
Before the tracker could say anything Seth spoke first.
"lee this isn't about trusting you this is about trusting Sam. anyway…. Even if we did anything Sam isn't gonna back out from the Volturi coming. He wouldn't risk letting anything happen to the tribe. And it isn't like we're planning on killing him…. even though we all want to".
"Sam will get what's coming to him". Jacob turned back to his beta. "Leah I promise you that. Sam will play for what he has done". His eyes flickered up to the vampire. "for what he's done to both of you. I'll make sure he gets what's coming to him. if not by my hand then by the elders".
A flush sound could be heard in the background.
"how about we moved this party to the living room, and finish this little chat then?". Jacob said. knowing that Leah wouldn't want this talk to be in the earshot of her mother.
They all nodded.
"I don't have to go home with you right?... it was just the first right?. Cos now San and his lackeys know I exist". Alistair raised his eyebrows.
"well….. that the other thing I wanted to talk to you about".
"what Jake no". Leah cried, then lowered her voice when she remember her mother was still in the house. "you said I could bring him back here remember?".
"Sam may still come….".
"then I'll defend Alistair. I did It before".
"no".
"Jake that bullsh….".
"I don't care Lee. He brought Jared with that this morning. what if he brings the whole pack next time?".
"then I'll…".
"don't say you'll defend your mother, you cant defend your mother and Alistair and yourself".
"first of all Alistair isn't helpless. You much have forgotten because In case you're wondering he's a vampire. He has the whole strength thing going on for him and let's not forget the whole super steed. And secondly, we have another werewolf in the house". The she wolf gesture to her brother. "who is more than capable of taking care of himself. and they wouldn't dare hurt or do anything to my mother, they'd all be way too chicken shit to even lay a hand on her. She's on the council. And we both know that's a sure as a shit way to get yourself kick-off of the Rez for good".
"well if I'm not around or Quil or Embry, you'll still be outnumbered".
"and you're not gonna be outnumbered?. Are you forgetting it would be just you and Billy. Shit Jacob, even in this fucking room you're outnumbered".
"as the Alfa what I say goes. And I say Alistair says with us. now that Sam had already been to my house he wouldn't do it again. I'm going to the elders tomorrow and gonna tell them Sam came to my place. I'm gonna leave out the fight and just say he threatened you both. That way he can still be around for when the Volturi come because we both know he'll get booted from the Rez….. or at least for a while. As long as they all know he had the balls to come to my house they'll forbid him from coming anywhere near my place or yours. He won't be allowed anywhere near your imprint until the elder believes they could trust him again. and because Billy's on the council as well, and because Billy's been on the council longer than Sue if anything happened to him it would course more of an uproar".
"I just don't feel right about this. He's my imprint I'm his mate. we should be together no matter what". She crossed her arms.
"and I agree with you but I'm trying to keep the peace as best I can. I'm sorry all this has happened to you right now….. of all the times this could have happened for you it had to happen right at this very moment. I know that out of all of us you're the one who deserves a happy ending. But you're not gonna get that happy ending if I don't do my job…. The right way".
The she wolf bite her lip, she knew that Jacob wasn't wrong and that he really did have his best interest at heart. But having her imprint taken away from her hurt her more deeply than when Sam left. "I just don't know if I could handle being so close to him but so far. Doesn't it hurt when you can't be in the same place at Ness?".
"more than anything but I can trust that she'll be taken care of".
"love".
Leah turned to look at the tracker.
"maybe it may be the best thing for me to stay with him…. and the too talkative of old. If your Ex decides to come for me again I don't want him anywhere near you. seein' what the man did to you, seein' as he jumped and bite and chokes you was almost too much for me to watch. And even more painful was not being able to get to you in time. if your pack mate hadn't come I wouldn't have been able to get to you. I never want to feel that helpless again".
"but doesn't it hurt you to…."?
"be away from you. only with all my heart. I'd much rather be looking over my shoulder every minute of every day, than watching you get attacked again. and the worst part was I couldn't even help you".
"and I thought I was the dramatic one of the pack". Seth mumbled.
"but that doesn't mean you should leave me".
"who's leaving…. Love I'm not even ten minutes away".
The she wolf signed. "fine".
"Are you fine?".
"Lee it won't be forever". The alfa put in.
She signed again, but this time louder. "yes I'll be fine. Your right….. it won't be forever….. I'll live".
Her mate moved towards her and placed his hands on her waist, he pulled Leah in to him. "I'll see you every day". the tracker planted a kiss on her forehead.
"I know….. and I know I'm overreacting over something that isn't a big deal. It's just I finally have you…. of course, I'm not gonna wanna let you go….. I'm happy".
"I'm happy too, and I'd like it to stay that way". Alistair then turned to Jacob. "when do I 'ave to be back at your place for?".
" It's only the middle of the day, you can stay here for a bit longer. Or at least until the sun goes down".
"is everything okay?. you've all been in here for some time". Sue walked in to the kitchen.
"yeah mum, everything's fine ". Seth answered.
"okay well good then, because I've been called in to work. one of the nurses is sick. I'll be gone for a few hours. We'll you guys be alright for dinner?".
"Yeah, mum I'll take care of it". Leah nodded and waved it off.
"good". Their mother nodded. "Alistair it was nice meeting you".
"likewise". His lips were in a tight line out of awkwardness.
The older woman walked over to the front door. "see you all later". And with that, she was gone, out the door.
"come on Seth". Jacob turned to the younger wolf. "let's go for a look around the woods". He looked back to Leah and Alistair. " I drought it would happen, but Sam and his pack may still be sniffing around the area".
"but….".
"no, come on Seth?". He grabbed Seth by the arm and stormed out of the house. He pushed the younger wolf out of the door and stopped to turn aback. "stay inside you two". He yelled back before shutting the door behind him.
Leaving the couple just standing there in the middle of the kitchen. "come on". she grabbed his hand. "we can go up to my room and watch T.V until we hear anything more.
"oh good, maybe we could barricade ourselves in". Alistair said sarcastically as his mate lead him up the stairs.
Later in the night.
Ring, ring, ring.
Alistair out his phone and held it to his ear. "hello?".
"Alistair, it's Carlisle and Esme. Don't worry, we're alone in my office with some music playing, no one can hear this conversation".
"yeah". He said slowly.
"We just wanted to know how you were doing?".
"Carlisle… it's been one day".
"Alistair we just wanted to make sure you and Leah were safe. We heard about what happened this morning. we were worried for you". Esme's concerned voice drifted through the phone. the tracker's red eyes flickered over to his sleeping mate. the she wolf had fallen to sleep about an hour before. They had been watching some movie called Look Who's Talking when she had drifted off. he decided to just let her sleep instead of waking her up. he knew that she wouldn't be happy about him letting her sleep while they were meant to be spending time together. but in the end, he was going to be going back to Jacob's house, so really he didn't have to deal with it.
"we're fine Esme, Leah's asleep right now and I'll be going back to Jacobs soon".
"that's what we were gonna talk to you about".
'oh boy. the English vampire rolled his eyes.
"Alistair…". The doctor's voice sounded hopeful. "if we could get Amun and the others covens on bored…".
"Carlisle..".
"no please let me finish".
Alistair signed.
"would Leah and yourself be open to moving in there for a little while. Or just until this whole Volturi blows over?".
"I think we're all well aware that, that business would never work out".
"it's just we're worried for the both of you. we're also worried for Sue…".
"that's if Sam or anyone from his pack decides to stop by and things get out of hand". Esme put in with a worried frown on her pale beautiful face.
"we're trying to say that it may be the safest option for the two of you?. all we wanna do is help. We feel responsible for the way it played out the last time you were here".
"Carlisle doesn't feel responsible. It was Amun who ticked me right off".
"Alistair please think about this". 'we don't want you to get hurt. Esme thought sadly.
"Esme we'll be fine here, and I don't want Leah anywhere near another vampire right now. it won't be safe for her. especially around Amun, you both heard the way he talked about her".
"Alistair…".
"yes Esme I know Leah can hold her own, I trust her to, in fact, she could hold her own better than I can…..".
"no please that wasn't what I was trying to say. I was gonna say the way Sam was acting today was so aggressive. We don't think he's in the best state of mind right now. that's why we're concerned. We believe he's going to try something again and soon. I don't want to say he's unstable…. But….. I can't say he didn't seem that way. And for the record…. We know Leah can hold her own". The doctor's wife had a slight tinged of humor in her voice as she said the last part. And she truly believes that about Leah as well.
"he's gonna do somethin'?... when?". Alistair tried his best not to let the panic in his voice slip through. which for the most part he did a good job in. but he couldn't help but sound concerned for their safety. it wasn't that he didn't trust Jake and the rest of his pack to have their packs. He knew that they'd do anything for Leah, including protecting her mate. even if her mate was a vampire. he was more worried about what would happen in Sam's entire pack decided to descend upon them while the black pack was away. Two or three he and Leah may be able to handle….. maybe. But his mate's ex's whole pack was another thing altogether. The tracker all of a sudden had the urge to pick up Leah and jump out of the window.
"Alistair we don't know if he'll really do anything". Carlisle said. "Esme and I just have a feeling he may try. He didn't seem to be understanding what we were all telling him. we tried to explain to him that he wasn't to go near you guys again but we believe he's determined to find a way to break the imprint. Or at least try to prove that Leah didn't really imprint at all. and that it's all just in her head. as Sam and Jared were leaving Edward was arriving. He was able to read Sam's thoughts and he says Sam thinks Leah's just lonely, or afraid of being alone for the rest of her life. He thinks Leah is just trying to get under his skin but doesn't realize it".
"that doesn't make any sense".
"We know Alistair. But he seems to believe that Leah had convinced herself that this is really what she wants. He's in complete denial of the reality of this situation".
"bollocks". The English vampire growled to himself. he heard steering from behind him and turned to see Leah waking up from her sleep. "Leah's waking up so we'll have to finish this later".
"okay, we'll call you back tomorrow".
"and please consider what we said. if you both do decide to come to stay with us this time we'll keep the others coven in line. It's only the nomads, the Romanians, the Irish, and of course Amun and Kebi who really have a problem with it all. everybody else is either on your side or doesn't care. ".
"Esme that's half your house right now…. remember?".
"And the other half is on your side".
"Alistair?".
Carlisle heard Leah's tired voice on the other side of the phone. "okay old friend we'll let you go and call you tomorrow. Or when the others go out hunting you both could come over and we could chat about this probably?".
"right…. Bye".
"bye Alistair stay safe". Esme said before the phone hung up.
"stay safe….. right". He said to himself before to turned his attention to his mate.
At the Cullen's.
"come on….. we better make sure Emmet hasn't broken the new windows putting them in".
Esme snickered as she turned off the music.
As they made it to the open, Carlisle opened it only to be met with Amun. Leaning on the wall. "that was him wasn't it?".
"Amun how much did you hear?". 'not this again. the doctor wanted to desperately roll his golden eyes. But didn't want to risk Amun having a hissy fit over Carlisle's reaction.
"It wasn't easy with the music playing so not much…. only the part about you wanting him to come back….. along with it". he hissed.
"Amun… no". Esme said warningly. At this point daring him to try and talk them out of their decision. "you won't have a say in this. It's for their safety".
"well…. Did the race traitor agree to it or not?". He crossed his arms.
"for the moments he's said no but we're hoping he'll come around". Carlisle rubbed at his forehead.
"are you both forgetting what he did to me?. he could have killed me, and you were all just going to sit around and watch. He's the unstable one committing bestiality here. and your all acting like I'm the bad guy".
"first of all… we did not all sit around and watch as he went for you. Carlisle along with others tried to get him off of you. secondly, Leah is a human being, he is not committing bestiality. And I think that's a really rotten thing to say, you are acting as the bad guy here".
Amun snorted. "I've said worst".
"why can't you just leave it alone".
"Esme stop with the heart of gold act please. The both of you know this is wrong just as much as I do. I'd bet my life on it".
"Amun!". Benjamin turned a corner and came in to the hallway. Ever since what happened the day before and the way his father had reacted to the news of Alistair and Leah, Benjamin had been trying to keep a closer eye on him. "how about we go in to the living room and watch some TV?. what do you say?". He shot a concerned look at the married couple in front of them.
"Benjamin they want them to stay here with us… both of them".
"Amun…". His son pleaded.
"this Sam fellow seems to be the only one with his head on straight. See Carlisle even the enemy seem to agree that this is wrong".
"Sam is not our enemy…. He's just a very misguided and a very, very confused person right now at this moment. We're trying to have faith that he's come around".
"If he's smart he won't". Amun quipped.
The doctor's wife steeped ford "is there anything we could do to convince you that this is really a good thing?. Amun we can't go on like this, you need to start to accept this for what it is".
"accepted this?... accepted this?... what could possibly be done that could….".
"I have an idea?". Kate suddenly popped her head around the corner.
"have you been listening to this private conversation?".
"Yeah, we all have!". Emmet called from somewhere in the house.
"If he doesn't want them in the house and is going to continue being a big baby about it all". Kate shot a cold glare at the Egyptian vampire. "why don't they just set up a tent out the back of the house and stay there. It isn't in the house so Amun or the Irish coven don't have anything to make a fuss about. and it's on your side of the treaty line so this Sam and his buddies can't come here?". she smiled looking proud of herself.
"and how are we so sure Sam and the other dogs wouldn't cross it?". Kebi was all of a sudden standing by her husband. "if what you say about the wolves not being able to attack each other imprints, which they already have by the sounds of it., it true. How do you know they will stay on their side and not choose to turn against us in the fight against the Volturi?".
"they wouldn't come here". Garret came in to the hallway and took Kates's hand in his own. The hallway was now starting to get very crowded. "we are a house full of vampires. Then along with Jake's pack they are heavy. Heavy outnumbered".
"and how do you know that?". Amun hissed at the former soldier. "why has a very body in this house gone mad. It's all those animals you all drink they've messed with all your minds. Kebi come, we're going in to another room. I can't stand to be in here any longer". He ruffly took her hand and stormed out of the hallway.
Benjamin shook his head. "Carlisle, Esme I'm so sorry about his behavior, I will do my best to change his mind". They both nodded at Benjamin as he walked away. Embarrassed about the way his father had been acting.
"that isn't a bad idea Kate. I'll run it by the two of them when we see them next". She nodded at them and made her way from the hallway, with Garret close behind her.
"at least no windows were broken this time". the doctor chuckled and hugged his wife, planting a sweet kiss on her forehead.
