Chapter Two
15th July 2014 – 14:00
Steve McGarrett's Point of View
"Do we understand one another Commander? I don't want to hear of any more situation like the one which arose from your team during your last case. I can't believe I'm having to say this to you but you cannot, and I repeat Commander, cannot, dangle a suspect off of the roof of a building or over the edge of a cliff just to obtain the answers you want regardless of how tempting it might be. I can see from reports from your previous cases that you have used similar methods in the past. This comes to a stop now and trust me when I say that you do not want to test me over this. I'm just surprised that Detective Williams doesn't stop you from using this techniques, especially as he would know the risks involved."
Steve McGarrett winced at the mention of his partner, his mind flickering back to the previous week when Danny had arrived on the rooftop where Steve and their suspect had been, his bright blue eyes sparkling with fury once he realized what Steve had been doing. The lecture which Steve had received from the younger man had lasted a hour and a half which Steve was sure was a new record.
The rant had been a welcome relief since Danny had spent the two hours before it studiously ignoring any attempt Steve had made of conversation making it a very long two hours for him. The last thing he needed was for the Governor to place the blame for what Steve did on Danny's broad shoulders especially since Danny had been speaking to the receptionist at the time it went down. It had been Kono who had been provided Steve with the backup which Danny had insisted that he had with him.
Something which would never happen again if the other members on the team had any say in the matter, pointing out that Steve and Kono were clearly too similar in their methods to be left alone with each other.
"I understand what you're saying Governor and it's not an issue which you'll need to worry about happening again." Steve remarked as he turned his attention back to his computer screen and the game of Solitaire he was in the middle of playing. The meeting was seriously beginning to drag in his eyes. Why the Governor couldn't just send him a simple email stating all the points which he wanted to discuss with him was beyond him.
Sometimes he thought the man just liked hearing the sound of his own voice.
"Well it's good to know that Detective Williams has at least some control over your actions while at work Commander." The Governor stated, an amused tone coming to his voice. "Sometimes I feel as though he is the only one who has that ability. I'd like you to provide me with a rough time scale for how long the changes we spoke of will take to be implemented. It would help ease tension between your team and the HPD Detectives if I can go back to Captain Hookano and show him that you are showing yourself to be willing to listen to his concerns."
"Of course Governor." Steve said through gritted teeth, managing to keep his tone polite even as he mentally pictured punching the captain in his smug face. The other man sheer purpose in life seemed to be causing Steve and his team nothing but hassle and it was hassle which they could all do without. "Once Detective Williams has returned from his lunch hour then I'll ask him opinion on it. I should be able to drop you an email with the time frame as requested by the end of the week."
"Excellent, please make sure that you CC my Personal Assistant into the email this time around Commander. Unless I hear from you earlier then we'll resume this conversation with one another at the same time next week. Please pass on my congratulations to your team on a job well done on your last case, I may not approve of all your methods but I can't deny that they produce results." He stated.
Steve blinked when the Governor hung up the phone on him without so much of a goodbye.
Breathing out nosily, Steve dropped the handset back into place and quickly finished up his game before exiting out of the program. He sat at his desk for a few moment, allowing his eyes to drift close, wishing that he could stay there for the rest of the day though he was well aware that it wasn't an option for him.
He still had paperwork to complete and there were the one to one meetings which had been scheduled in with Chin, Kono and Lou that afternoon which the Governor had insisted that Steve completed with the team once a month. Steve would then need to write up the reports and send them directly to the Governor so he could read through them and keep a copy of them on their records.
Sometimes, if Danny was in a good mood then he could convince the blond to do them in his place but considering the amount of files which Steve could see piled up on the other man's desk he somehow knew what the answer would be this time around if he asked.
Steve resting the palm of his hands on his clean surface of his desk and pushed himself up to his feet, stretching his arms above his head, wincing when his back cracked from the pressure, his body clearly objecting to having to sat down for so long without being able to move. He dropped his arms and headed out of the office, his blue eyes flickering around the open area carefully, taking in all the details which had changed since he had entered his office that morning. He rubbed at his stomach as it rumbled before he made his way over to the computer table where Chin, Kono and Lou were gathered, talking quietly with one another with identical looks of concern on their faces.
He glanced to the side of him when a movement caught his attention, his eyes narrowing slightly when he saw Jerry Ortega sitting at one of the desk near the window working away on a laptop making him wonder not only what he was working on but why he was in the office in the first place when he didn't even work for the team. It baffled him why the other man seemed to determined to always be in their office but since he was harmless and the others liked him most of the time he just let it go. He knew that the other man wanted to have a Five-O badge but both he and Danny had talked about it continuously and had come to the joint decision that he wasn't ready and he wouldn't be for a while yet. There was no harm in letting him help out though if that was how he wanted to spend his time.
"What's with the expressions?" Steve asked as he came to a stop at the table, his eyes flickering around their faces with a frown. "Have we got a new case in that I don't know about yet?"
"I wish that was it" Kono said on a sigh as she crossed her arms over her chest. "Haven't you got the memo Boss, today is all about completing the paperwork for the DA's office and submitting it to Danny so he can do whatever it is he does with them once they are completed."
Steve pulled a face at the thought of the paperwork which he still had outstand before he pushed it away from his mind with a shrug.
"Well if Danno says that it has to be done today then…" he remarked allowing his voice to trail off. "That doesn't explain why you're all standing here looking worried." He turned to look at Chin giving the older man a pointed look as he waited for an answer to his question.
"We were wondering where Danny has got to." Chin answered. "He spoke to me earlier on about getting some test results back from CSU because he needed to know the conclusions to add to the file for his meeting with the DA tomorrow and they were running late. I got the impression from him that the results were important, so I picked them up from there earlier when I had to go there for something else but he's not around to give them to. He's nowhere in the building because I've checked and he's not picking up his phone either. I must have rang him at least five times now and nothing. No one seems to have any idea where he has gone, I'm not the only one looking for him either, the Medical Examiner's office rang wanting to speak to him about the Littman case from last week but they can't get through to him either."
Steve frowned at Chin's comment, looking over his shoulder towards Danny's empty office.
"He came to see me just before one and said he was heading out to Amy Hanamoa's café to pick up lunch for us. He wanted to check in with her as well so I think he was planning on being gone for about forty minutes or so. He's planning on leaving early because Grace is feeling under the weather at the moment and has been asking for him so Rachel agreed that he could pop around their place at five so he could spend some time with her."
"He came and took my food order as well, thing is McGarrett that he came to ask just before one and it's now ten past two, even if he was planning on having a chat with the woman, what did you say her name was? Amy Hanamoa? Then he would still be back by now, I mean I haven't been here long but even I know that Williams doesn't do late. He's on time for everything, I don't think the man knows the meaning of the word late." Lou stated, crossing his arms over his chest.
"He's right" Kono agreed with a frown. "Danny would never take longer then a hour for lunch especially if he was bringing food back for you and Lou, Steve. He would have known that you had a meeting with the Governor and that you would need to eat before it."
"And it doesn't explain why he isn't picking up his phone." Chin added as he reached up and pulled absently on his lower lip. "I called him on both his work and personal cell phone and he didn't answer either of them. We all know that Danny always has them both on him in case Grace called him for any reason and if she's under the weather like you said then he would definitely keep it close to him."
Steve nervously licked at his lip, bringing his wrist up and looking down at the watch which Danny had given to him as a gift the Christmas just gone.
"How many times have you rang him on his cells Chin?" Steve questioned, looking back towards him.
"I've called three times on his work cell and twice on his own one over the space of thirty minutes." Chin answered him after checking his phone records on his cell.
"Chin came and asked me if I had seen Williams at all" Lou said. "So I tried calling him as well but I got nothing either, he hasn't even called back."
"Which isn't like him." Kono said
"Danny might miss one call because he was too busy at that one second in time to pick up but I've never known him to miss six of them regardless of what he was up to or how busy he was. We're still on the clock so he would assume that if one of us called him that a case had come in. He wouldn't just ignore the calls." Chin stated firmly.
Steve nodded slowly, an uneasy feeling sweeping over him.
"He wouldn't" Steve agreed as he fished out his own phone from his pocket and look down at it. "He hasn't called or texted me either since leaving here which isn't normal for him, normally he always does one or the other when he heads out." He commented, looking to the side of them and waving his hand at Jerry and making a come here motion with it when he looked up at them, his dark eyes brightening. Once he had joined them Steve continued to speak. "Something might have happened during Danny's lunchbreak, maybe he witness an accident or something similar which he's currently dealing with. Jerry, do me a favour, could you-" His voice came to an abrupt stop when Danny's personal ringtone blared out from Steve's phone, cutting through the growing tension like a hot knife through butter. "Hold on, that's him now." He told them.
"Thank God" Kono said in clear relief as he pressed down on the connect button before he placed the call on loudspeaker so the others could hear it.
"Hey Danno, where you been Buddy? Is everything okay with you? I've got you on loudspeaker with the others." He commented, raising an eyebrow when Danny didn't launch into an explanation straight away. His mouth tilted up into a smile as he pictured his partner gathering himself together for an epic rant about whatever it was which had delayed him when another male voice spoke, A voice which Steve didn't recognise.
"Well that all depends on what your definitely of alright Commander. Your partner is currently alive although he is also currently unconscious and a little tied up. I'm afraid my accomplice lacks a delicate touch over certain thing." He stated calmly.
Steve froze, staring down at his cell phone as though it had suddenly turned into a ticking timebomb in his hand. For a moment he felt paralysed by fear before his SEAL training kicked into action. He snatched a nearby pen and notebook and scrawled in it, shoving it over to Chin and Jerry, watching them react to the simple three words which he had written across the page.
TRACE THE CALL.
Chin nodded once at him before he directed Jerry over to one of the other computers as he brought up the tracking system he had invented and went straight to page which was linked to Danny.
"What do you want? Where is Detective Williams?" Steve demanded, keeping his voice even and expressionless with difficulty. He wanted to yell at the man and threaten him, letting him know all the things he would do to him when he found him but he couldn't do that. What he had to do, was rely on his SEAL training. The same training which he had used in the past and which had never failed him before.
"You can understand why I can't tell you the whereabouts of your partner at present time Commander. That would be hardly any fun for us if we finished this game too early. If you cooperate with our demands though then you have my word that Detective Williams will remain in fairly good physical condition. We might even be generous and drop him off at a nearby hospital rather then simply dumping his ass on an abandoned road somewhere which was our first original plan. If you fail to meet our demands then he's going to be the one who will suffer for it, so the ball is very much in your court when it comes to how we treat our guest."
Steve's free hand curled up into a fist at his side as his eyes narrowed. He forced himself to breathe through the rage bubbling away inside of him, keeping his gaze fixed downwards on the phone. He spoke, a barely supressed violence to his voice which Kono and Lou clearly heard if the quick look they shared was any indication for him to go by.
"If you touch Detective Williams then I can promise you that when I find you, and trust me when I say that I will find you, it will be one of the last mistakes which you make."
"We would expect nothing less from a Navy SEAL Commander like yourself McGarrett though let me make you a promise in return. If you threaten us again then you'll never see your partner again. Instead what I'll do is take Detective Williams out onto the ocean myself and push him overboard and watch as he slowly drowns and the life drains out of his eyes. You'll have to be the one who will have to explain to his daughter what Uncle Steve's foolish actions cost her. If you piss me off enough, then I'll make sure that I film everything that happens to him and I'll send you that video so you can live through every moment of it just as he did." The man stated lightly before his voice hardened. "Further contact will be made with you shortly. I'd be sure to pick up the call quickly if I was you."
Steve swallowed hard as the phone went dead indicating that the call had been disconnected on the other side. A thick, heavy silence filled the room. He looked up in time to see the expression of shock on the others faces morph into looks of determination and rage at someone threatening one of their own.
"I've got a trace on the Camaro Steve, it's parked two streets away from the main high street where Amy's coffee shop is." Jerry said, breaking the silence as he brought the information up on the plasma screen, nodding towards the blue light flashing on the map to show them what he meant.
"The trace on his badge is showing up at the same location Steve." Chin added. "There's a good chance that he might be nearby to the car since it's unlikely that they would know that we each have a tracer embedded in our badges.
"Let's get ready to move out." Steve stated, moving past them into his office. He unlocked his drawer pulled out his guns, making sure they were loaded before he put them back in his gun holsters. He turned his attention to the safe behind his desk and unlocked it, pulling out the slim black long case from within. He shut the safe door and turned placing the case on the surface of his desk, taking a moment to unlock it before he flipped the lid open and stared down at the contents with cold eyes.
His sniper rifle from his days as a SEAL.
The same gun which he hadn't had to use once since coming back home to Hawaii.
It was a powerful, Navy issue only. No one who was in the normal ranks had a gun like this one, only a few elite snipers throughout the three armed forces had one. Steve just happened to be one of those elites.
He built it up quickly, putting in the ammo and lifted it to his shoulder, looking through the scope and tested the weight of it until he was satisfied by it. Steve could hit a running target five hundred yards plus with the gun. Whoever was stupid enough to have his partner and to threaten his life would be receiving a small present from Steve and an one way ticket to the morgue.
Steve left his office, thankful to see the others were ready, armed to the teeth with their vests and equipment already on. His eyes landed on the sniper rifle Kono had strapped to her back, the shot gun Chin held lightly in his hand and the several guns which Lou had strapped to his person. They were weapons which told Steve all he needed to know about the current mind set of his team.
They wanted blood.
He turned to look at Jerry who was looking between them with an anxious expression on his face, he clearly wanted to help them but had no idea how to do it.
"I need you to stay here in headquarters Jerry." He told the other man, his tone making it clear that it was a straight out order rather than a suggestion to him. "Keep an eye on both the Camaro and the badge tracker and make sure that they don't move from that slot. If they do then send us the location through straight away." He commanded.
"I can do that for you." Jerry responded, looking relieved as he moved back towards the laptop.
Steve nodded once to him before he turned his attention back to Chin, Kono and Lou.
"Let's head out" He stated.
