Chapter 2
"Come, come summer time love, love hold my hand
Come, come summer time love, love take a ride with me
-Shwayze
Shannon sat at her table silently observing the three teens with a fond smile. Most people wouldn't believe that such a tiny girl could command such respect and authority with such a small stature but, as she watched Rachel beat Noah and Sam at thumb war to see who'd get the extra slice of cheese pizza she herself wasn't shocked. Rachel used her size to her advantage and let people underestimate her, which, in the end always lead to her having the upper hand.
"What the hell are you on Rachel!"
"I am offended that you believe I would taint my body with supplements that could possibly stunt my growth." At that the three other occupants at the table failed to stifle their laughter.
"I'm sorry Smalls but, what growth?" Rachel narrowed her eyes and tossed a French fry at Sam's head.
"It could happen," she mumbled feebly. That set off another round of laughter that Rachel's glare only intensified.
"Sorry Little B but I think you're done growing," ignoring Rachel's huff she decided to bring up what she'd been thinking about on the ride over to the pizzeria. "I thought up a schedule for you guys to train over the next month and a half. Five time a week no questions asked." She stopped talking in order to gauge their reactions. None of their facial expressions pronounced any signs of negativity or protest, satisfied she continued. "Mornings are going to be the best time for you, besides the fact that the temperature is perfect that time of the day, that Nazi cheerleading coach told me that under no circumstances is she to see my pathetic excuse of athletes on her squads' field past 12:00 seeing as how they start at 12:30. You guys can come up with the exact time you'd like to utilize it and the drills that you do. All that I ask is that you stay properly nourished and hydrated. For all of you I recommend a form of a protein shake. Sam and Rachel look for something including a bit of whey protein in it, you could both stand to gain a little bit more muscle but it won't bulk you up like a body builder. Puckerman you on the other hand could stand to cut a little bit of muscle." Puck's eyes widened comically but the coach swiftly held up her hand to cut off any protest. "I promise you if you add blue-green algae to your shake you'll loose a little muscle but, you'll be quicker on your feet and jump a little higher, trust me." Puck's bottom lip jutted out a little bit as he started to pout but he nodded his head yes anyway.
"Coach, are you going to observe us at all?" Coach Beiste let out a sigh.
"Technically I can't have any kind of interaction with the players until try-outs which, is why I can't instruct you to practice certain drills however; I think you guys are more than capable of coming up with strength training and football drills on your own."
"I think you're right B, I already have some ideas for both areas." In glee people considered Rachel to be bossy when she took charge of the group but, Sam and Puck held nothing but gratitude in their eyes because they knew and appreciated how capable the little diva was.
"Stevie and Stacy are going to be so excited when I tell them."
"Who are Stevie and Stacy Sam?"
"My little brother and sister, coach." Shannon nodded, she had forgotten what Rachel mentioned about Sam's home life, more importantly that he was practically raising his younger siblings. "Would it be ok if they tagged along in the morning? My parents are usually still at work that early." It happened so quick that both boys missed it but Shannon's eyes met Rachel's and she saw the impeccable nod Rachel gave.
"I don't have a problem with it Maverick." Sam tilted his head at the new nickname but shrugged his shoulders and nodded in acceptance.
"Speaking of working," Rachel piped up." I have a proposition for you guys." This garnered the attention of everybody at the table. "I was wondering if my fellow Jedi's would like to join me in working for the summer?" Noah spoke first.
"What exactly are you going to be doing my Jewish American Princess?" Rachel nervously fiddled with her napkin and all of the sudden found her lap very interesting. This made Noah furrow his eyebrows in confusion, Rachel was always confident around the guys unless she had a recent doctors appointment. "Rach?" Rachel cleared her throat and glanced at Sam to her right and then back at Noah across the table.
"Well you guys are aware that my fathers opened a restaurant and lounge about twenty-five minutes away right?" They nodded an affirmative. "Right well, they also own about twenty more along the east and west-coast along with five in Europe," two jaws unhinged in shock. Noah sputtered trying to form a sentence but it was Sam who recovered first.
"Yoda, why didn't you tell us?" Sam asked with no signs of malice, just pure curiosity. Rachel ducked her head feeling slightly guilty.
"I honestly don't know why. I mean you guys found out about you know," she said gesturing to her crotch, " And never judged me but, I guess I didn't want to tell you and then worry about you sticking around because of our wealth that not many people in Lima know about it." Rachel's gaze ended up back in her lap so she missed the guys and Coach Beiste shaking their heads fondly. Sam nudged Rachel's shoulder with his gently.
"Rach we're your bro's, you not getting rid of us unless you break bro code, and even then bro's forgive bro's. Right Artoo?"
"Yeah but you shouldn't steal a bro's girl."
"Or cock-block a bro." Sam and Puck started going back and forth forgetting they were sitting in front of their potential coach and technically Rachel's godmother.
"Ratting a bro out."
"Drinking a bro's last beer."
"Having sex in a bro's bed."
"Ehhh the Puckster's going to have to disagree on that." Sam and Rachel both scrunched their nose up in disgust. "Hey don't judge until you're in the heat of the moment. Besides I didn't say don't change the sheets, a bro should totally change the sheets." With that Sam and Rachel both reluctantly nodded their heads in agreement.
"As your coach and piccolo's godmother, I'm going to act like I didn't hear any of that." All three teens blushed. Rachel cleared her throat again even though her cheeks remained tinted pink.
"Right, well anyway back to your original question. The restaurant here was a gift to me last year for my sixteenth birthday, I'm the owner." The boys openly gawked at Rachel who just smiled and shrugged like as if it was no big deal. "I designed the structure, layout, menu, and had an input on the staff. I have shift mangers and a restaurant manager so, I'll just be there to perform, look over the books for the day and make sure the staff runs the night shift smoothly."
"Wait what do you mean perform?" Shannon asked who had been silently nodding along. Rachel had been keeping the restaurant's design a secret wanting to surprise her. At this question Rachel gave a giddy smile.
"Well it'll be easier to understand once you see the layout but I've had a small jazz stage installed in the restaurant's layout along with a grand piano, and there's also been a stage set-up in the bar-lounge portion of the restaurant which is separate from the formal restaurant and mainly for teenagers and young adults," she finished with a proud nod. Her friends and madrina all sported impressed expressions.
"Let me guess, you'll be playing the piano," Puck said with a cocky grin.
"Nope, I'll actually be performing at the bar," Rachel said with a smug smile.
"How will one not interfere with the other?" Sam asked with a confused tilt of the head.
"You'll see," Rachel said cryptically.
"Ok, back to your original question, what do you want to hire us to do?" Noah asked suspiciously. Rachel gave her giddy smile again and immediately divulged her idea. She bounced in her seat a little before she spoke.
"Well I was thinking you guys could help with the security but as a bonus also perform my five song set with me the nights we work." The security aspect sounded good to both boys but they were both apprehensive about performing due to Rachel's song choices sometimes. They shared a look and silently agreed Noah should be the one to tackle the problem.
"Rach we're all for security but, as far as performing goes, I'm not sure we're the "formal music" type he said using air parenthesis. Rachel huffed out an irritated breath.
"First of all, you both hangout with me enough to know I don't typically sing Broadway outside of glee, singing competitions, and vocal lessons," both boys smiled sheepishly. "Second of all I have a brilliant idea." The guys motioned with their hands for her to continue. "We'll do a set list of five songs a night, three requested by any of the patrons, and two that we pick. As far as song choices I was thinking that we should choose late 90's and early 2000's pop and rock!" Finally the boys's faces broke out with excited smiles of their own. "Noah you'll be on guitar, Sam you on the drums, and you both backing me up with vocals." By the time Rachel was done talking Sam and Noah both had glazed over eyes and a faraway look in their eyes. Rachel snapped her fingers.
"Sorry Smalls I was imagining all the hot ass we're gonna get."
"The babes." A throat cleared.
"Sorry coach," they said in unison. She nodded her head in acknowledgment.
"I think it's a great idea Little B."
"Thanks Bear," Rachel said, those brown eyes sparkling with excitement. Without missing a beat both boys accepted the offer as they paid for their pizza and excited the booth. Rachel continued discussing what they needed to know as they left. "I have a couple of security shirts for you back at the house, your uniform will consist of the shirt and black jeans, it's pretty simple," she said with a shrug. "Our shift will be from 6-12 p.m. even though the bar actually closes at 2 a.m. and the restaurant closes at 11 but, we'll be getting paid $200 each for our set, and you guys will be making $250 a piece for security," she said with a satisfied smile. Sam bounced on his toes a little.
"Are you telling me I'm going to be making $450 a night Yoda!" Rachel bit her lip trying to hide her wide smile.
"I am indeed Obie-Wan Kanobee." Without prompt Sam had Rachel in a bear hug squeezing her for all she was worth.
"Thank you thank you thank you thank you," Sam started chanting while he spun her in a circle. They received critical stares from other pedestrians but Rachel didn't care, she had been looking forward to telling Sam her idea the most because she knew how much he needed the money to help his family. Sam spun her around one last time before setting her down still holding her close. "Thank you so much Smalls." She could hear his voice cracking a bit and decided to give him an out so that he didn't end up crying in front on Puck.
"What kind of Jedi would I be if I left my fellow knights behind," she asked lightly punching his shoulder.
"A shitty one," he said matter-of-factly with a small chuckle.
"Is no one else visualizing the hot babes?" Puck asked following Rachel's lead trying to lighten the mood.
"I am, "Rachel said with no shame and a lustful glint in her eyes. She had never been shy about her sexuality around Sam and Noah and that would never change. She was still a virgin but working outside of Lima would give her the chance to actually explore her sexuality.
"Damn straight," Puck said offering both of his bro's a fist-bump. When they reached Coach Beiste who was already leaning against the car waiting, both boys declined a ride home choosing to walk instead.
"I gotta walk off some this excited energy," Sam offered up and she could tell he was being honest. Rachel shoulders shook with silent laughter but truthfully she was just as excited.
"Alright well I was thinking we should get to the field by 7:00 each day and finish at 11:30?" Both boys groaned but nodded in agreement knowing they needed to put the work in. Rachel ignored the groans knowing they'd adjust to waking up early throughout the summer. "Great, I'll pick-up Noah first since he's on the way to picking you up Sam, you should both be ready by at least 6:30." They both grumbled out a response but Noah scratched the back his head and asked Rachel a question he'd been dying to ask.
"Um Jew Babe, I didn't say anything earlier because I was pretty sure me and Sam-"
"Sam and I," she corrected.
"Right Sam and I were going to win that bet but you don't have a car." Rachel let out a mysterious laugh and creepy smile that made both boys a little weary.
"Oh but I do. It arrived a couple of weeks ago but since I was avoiding you guys you still haven't seen it."
"Okayyyy," Sam drew out the word out still feeling a little skeptical.
"Great," Rachel said with a clap of finality. "See you in the morning JP, AB " she said leaving both boys with a kiss on the cheek.
"Over and out Rae," they called out already walking away, tomorrow was going to be a long day.
When Rachel pulled up to Noah's house the next morning it was clear that he was still half asleep but when she pulled up to a stop in front of his house he took off his sun glasses and slowly made his way to Rachel. He was staring at a 2015 four-door jeep wrangler with a custom gold paint job that shimmered even though it was still dark out, and he gawked at the 26in matte black rims holding the beauty up. He finally made his way around the front of the car to the passenger side to slide in and once again he was in awe. The inside was customized too with black wood grain on the dash and center-console. Her GPS and stereo were both advanced technology with black buttons and blue LED lights. When Noah's eyes reached the steering wheel they lit up with excitement, in the middle taking up the entirety of the wheel was the batman symbol, and when he turned around to examine the rest of the car he noticed RB stitched into the black customized suede of each headrest. Puck twisted in his seat and wiped an imaginary tear away from his cheek.
"My little girl's all grown up." Rachel beamed with pride. By the time they reached Sam Noah was asleep again but, Sam and his siblings reaction was almost identical to Puck's. By the time they arrived at McKinley however, the guys were back to being grumpy. Everyone grabbed their bags but let the seats down so that Stevie and Stacy could sleep in the car a little bit longer.
"Guys stop being so cranky," Rachel said as they stretched on the field. All she got in response was grumbling, "And stretch properly, I don't want either of you pulling a muscle." Neither boy said anything that time and if Rachel didn't know any better she'd say their eyes were closed behind their sunglasses. "Guy's seriously, stop bitching and let's run a couple of laps to warm up before we do field sprints."
"There she is ladies and gentlemen, the real Rachel Berry," Sam mumbled out finally forming a complete sentence. All he got in response was Ross from Friend's version of the middle finger, which was typical for Rachel; most people just didn't know what it meant. Puck snorted out a laugh. Sam went to respond but Rachel cut him off.
"Is that Santana?" she asked looking at the lone figure running the track in the distance. Puck took off his sunglasses and tilted his head.
"Yea that's totally her, I recognize her ass anywhere." Puck wasn't paying attention but his comment made Rachel unconsciously clench her jaw. "She hasn't hit the Puckasarus up in awhile, Ima go see what's up with that," he said already jogging off to where she was on the track. Rachel's stomach churned but her face remained neutral. Sam was observing her behind his sunglasses with a knowing look.
"Yo San!" Puck called out to the fiery Latina. When she kept running he tried again. "Santana!" As he got closer he could see that she had headphones in. He cursed her speed, as he had to sprint to catch up with her. When he finally reached her he placed a hand on her shoulder but having not expected the contact the cheerleader spun around and delivered a knee to the groin. As Puck keeled over she realized who it was and rolled her eyes.
"Puta madre Puckerman! What the hell are you doing sneaking up on me?" She asked chest heaving from exertion and fear. Still writhing on the ground in pain Puck just waved his hand giving the universal signal that he needed a minute. When he felt like he could stand again he staggered to his feet.
"What the hell Santana, you have a bionic knee or some shit?"
Santana rolled her eyes again. "Sue makes all of the cheerios take self-defense training to prevent any form of assault dumbass." Puck ignored the insult and instead zeroed in on the cheerleaders chest with a lecherous grin.
"Damn San when are gonna let the Puckster play with the new fun bags," he asked waggling his eyebrows. Santana's face screwed up in annoyance and disgust.
"How about never Puckerman," she sneered. He went to speak again but she glanced over his shoulder and spoke before he could. "What are you doing here?" He studied her face trying to figure out the reason for the abrupt question.
"The new football coach said it was ok to be here right now, cheerios don't have practice until 12:30," he said lifting his chin up in defiance. Again she rolled her eyes out of annoyance and started cursing under her breath in Spanish.
"One, I'm not here for practice, I have to get five miles in before the sun completely rises; Sue's order, two let me rephrase my question, why are you, Trouty-Mouth, and the dwarf here?" Puck's mood immediately shifted and the Latina could tell but keep a stoic facial expression.
"Hey don't talk shit about my bro's alright?" Without waiting for a response he answered her second question," and to answer your question we're here for football training."
"What is Berry coaching you guys?" Even though he found it weird that she only zeroed in on Rachel, he shook it off and answered the question.
"Nah, girl's got talent, the new coach wants her to tryout in August," he said purposely leaving out Rachel's relationship with the woman, he nowhere near trusted the cheerleader with his Jew Babe. When he looked in the cheerleader's eyes however; he took a step back. The fire in her eyes could send a priest running for holy water. Not even bothering to say what she was doing the feisty girl brushed past Noah spewing more expletives in Spanish.
Noah turned on his heel and followed closely behind the pissed off Latina.
"Midget," she barked out. Rachel, who had been arguing with Sam about who played a better joker between Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, tensed but stayed with her back to the fast approaching girl. Sam unconsciously took a defensive stance next to Rachel but knew if she really needed to Rachel could take down anybody.
Santana, further irate at being ignored called out to the diva again. "I know you heard me Dwarf," she said unclenching and clenching her jaw. Rachel took a deep breath before turning around with a bored expression on her face.
"What can I do for you Santana?" she asked, voice laced with faux interest. Santana frowned and paused in thought never having really heard that tone of voice from the diva directed at her but shook it off and quickly recovered.
"Puck here seems to think you're trying out for the football team, the very same football team that more than one of your tormentors play on," she said taking another step forward almost in the smaller girls personal space.
"And if I am?" she responded not batting an eye. Santana started grinding her jaw and going on a customary Spanish rant to reign in her frustration.
"Maldita sea idiota tiene un deseo de muerte (damn idiot has a death wish) playing football with overgrown man-babies and-"
"No tengo ganas de morir, puedo cuidar de mi mismo." (I don't wanna die, I can take care of myself) Santana's eyes widen at the girls' fluent Spanish.
"Desde cuando hablas espanol? Mr. Shue es un maestro shityy." (Since when do you speak Spanish? Mr. Shue is a shitty teacher) Rachel let out an amused snort but then reverted and responded cryptically.
"He tiendo que saber hablar espanol desde los doce anos." (I had to learn to speak Spanish when I was twelve years old) Seeing that she wasn't going to get anything else out of the girl on that subject she got back to the original problem.
"Look whatever," Santana said trying to ignore the flutter in her chest at that girl's husky tenor when she spoke her native language so fluidly. "If you want more attention ask for more solos in glee, I'm sure Wheezy and Lady Hummel won't mind when they find out their preventing death by stupidity." Rachel glanced away for just a second before releasing a dry chuckle.
"You don't know me Santana, so stop trying to act like you do." Deciding she was done talking to the girl who infuriated her in so many ways, Rachel went to turn and tell Sam and Noah they should all start their warm-up but, instead she was swiftly spun back around and being led towards the side of the bleachers. Both boys went to protest but Rachel quickly dismissed them with a look. When they reached the Latina's intended destination Santana dropped the other girl's arm and both girls tried to ignore the goose bumps the contact caused for different reasons.
"Santana, if you wanted to talk in private you could've just used your words like a big girl," Rachel said with a raised eyebrow and slight smirk. Santana's eyes widened slightly in shock, she wasn't use to Rachel being anyone but the diva she was in glee. She let out an exasperated sigh before trying a different approach.
"Look Berry, I just don't want to see you get hurt ok? You've been through enough shit these past couple of weeks and I don't think this is going to help." By the time the cheerleader was done talking she was flexing both fist and fighting the urge to either run away or insult the girl in front of her since she was allowing herself to be a little vulnerable.
Rachel was caught off guard by the rare show of concern from the other brunette and was hesitant to let her guard down, as much as she wanted to because God knows how many times she's wanted to be closer to the cheerleader.
"Look Santana I don't know why you're acting like you care all of the sudden when you've helped torment me over the years but, like I said I can take care of myself." Rachel decided to have mercy on the girl and assuage her worries a little bit. "Besides, I have my Lesbro's," she said nodding her head towards the two boys who were failing to look busy and more like they were ready to come to the diva's aid if she needed it, "and I have training in things you know nothing about since you don't know me outside of glee."
For her part Santana's walls were rapidly building themselves back up since she wasn't getting her way, and she was couldn't express her feelings the way she wanted to. Truth is, it hurt to have Rachel act cold when she was one of the only people in her life that treated her like she could be something, even when she herself was treating the little star like shit.
Rachel sensed the emotional change in the girl and decided to drop the act. If she wanted a chance at a friendship with the girl she had to put her self out there. "If you wanted to you could though," at the girls confused face she elaborated, "get to know me Santana, I'm offering you a chance at friendship." Santana immediately reverted back to old habits.
"Why would I want to be friends with you Man-hands," she sneered. A look of hurt passed over Rachel's face, and the Latina flinched, and started to backtrack. "Berry I'm sorry ok, I'll think about it?" She offered up as a compromise. Rachel shrugged her shoulder and gave a dim smile nowhere near as bright as her usual mega-watt smile; she'd take a maybe over insults any day. Not wanting to let any awkwardness intrude on their conversation the cheerleader motioned back to the track. "We should get back, Coach Sue will kill me if I don't get my five miles in before sunrise, and I don't know how but, she'll totally know if I don't," she said with a small shudder.
"I thought you guys had practice at 12:30," Rachel asked as they walked back toward the track."
"We do, my five miles is apart of a punishment," she answered vaguely. Intrigued Rachel decided to push a little.
"What'd you do?" Santana paused and looked at the other girl, she hesitated before responding.
"The usual," she answered mysteriously and Rachel knew to drop it seeing as how they weren't yet friends but, little did the cheerleader know that Rachel was going to make it her job to make sure they became friends like she always hoped they'd be. They reached the track and the Latina gave a small wave before taking off, "see you around Berry."
"Nos vemos alrededor de nina bonita," (see you around pretty girl) Rachel whispered to the girl's back. She was startled when Sam slapped her on the back.
"Your ready to get this warm-up out the way? I'm ready for drills," he said bouncy on his toes like an excited puppy. Rachel could see Noah over Sam's shoulder roll his eyes fondly. Laughing the tiny brunette responded.
"Yes Samuel, let's go." As they started their trek around the track Noah and Rachel noticed Sam humming and nodding his head to his own beat.
"Dude, it's still too early for you to be this excited," Puck said still in a grumpy mood because of the early hour and Santana's earlier rejection.
"There are worst alternatives," Rachel said distractedly as she watched the Latina finish her last lap.
"Exactly!" Sam exclaimed. "Things are looking up," he said with a wide smile. They couldn't help but smile at that. Things were looking up, and it wasn't even the tip of the iceberg; they just didn't know it yet.
