Chapter 4
Next day back in the Village Hidden in the Leaves. Hinata is practicing her weaponry skills in hopes of improving before the academy reopens. However, she is finding it difficult to hit the center on a consistent basis and is growing frustrated. Neji who is practicing not far from her has noticed, but doesn't want to interfere unless she asks for his help.
"Neji-nii-san, I need your assistance."
"What seems to be the matter Lady Hinata?"
"I am having problems hitting multiple targets consistently."
"Okay, I'll help you with it." He offers, and then inquires about her classes. "How are things going at the academy, are you doing the girls only classes?"
"Not anymore, I've decided that I want to train in weaponry and participate in sparring sessions."
"That is good, besides you already do floral arrangement and pressing with the clan ladies."
"I'm also working on my chakra control every day to ensure I can perform the three academy jutsu when we restart at the academy."
"Well if you need my help just let me know."
"Okay thanks Neji-nii-san."
Upon ending his training session and returning home, he is greeted by his father who questions his lateness.
"Good evening father, I have returned."
"Did you have a good training session?"
"Yes, I did. I even helped Lady Hinata with her throwing skills."
"Oh, is the heiress still having problems?"
"Well to a degree, they taught them to hit multiple targets at once and she wants to ensure her proficiency."
"It still confuses me why you insist on aiding her training when she is main house and you my son are merely of the branch. Shouldn't the heiress to the clan have her own…"
Before he could finish his statement, Neji holds up his hand to stop him. Taking a deep breath and letting it out in an effort to calm himself, he speaks respectfully.
"Father, please let us not keep on rehashing the same issues again. I enjoy training with lady Hinata, she is different from the rest of the main house."
"That, maybe so for now my son, but I fear you are setting up yourself for heartache. She is the heiress to the clan and therefore our master. Do you think she will hesitate to use the seal on one of us if we step out of line?"
"Yes, I think she would. Contrary to what you think, just because she is of the main house doesn't make her bad. She is not your brother; she's a better person than he'd ever be."
"I hope, for your sake that you are correct my son, because I fear what it will do to you, if you are ever on the wrong side of that faith you have in her."
"I'm not wrong father and time will prove that I am right."
His father looked at him with pity and dismay, because he knew the hard road that must be traverse by those of the branch family. He simply didn't want to see his son, crushed under the weight of his fate if young Hinata turns out to be just like his brother and the rest of the main branch.
"Why are you so against this, was it not you who told me I was her protector?"
"Yes! Yes, I did tell you that, but this has nothing to do with protecting her and you know it."
"That is where you are mistaken father, I must protect Lady Hinata even when I am not around and for that to happen, I must ensure she can defend herself to the best of her abilities."
"She should already be strong enough to defend and to prove that she can lead this clan. You my son are a man, loved by the Hyuga talent more than anyone in the clan. Yet, you are reduced to being a slave to a weak girl simply because she was born to my brother."
He felt for his father, really, he did, but just because his father had resigned himself to his fate didn't mean he had to.
"I appreciate your concern father but I must walk my own path if I am to be the man you think I am. Anything less and I would not have attained my full potential."
"All I ask is that you threat lightly, because young Hinata not only holds your destiny in her hands, but the entire branch family."
In spite of his father's warning, Neji refused to abandon his promise to Hinata. A promise he made to her when they were still really young, but one he intended to honour fully.
Many have frowned at her shy, soft spoken and caring demeanor and automatically thought her weak because of those attributes. He however, knew differently as he is privy to the inner working of her thoughts and ambitions.
He believes in her, because she believes in herself that she will be able to change the clan for the better and he wants to be standing by her side when it happens.
Later that evening, Hinata is found spending time with her baby sister which is something she enjoys immensely. Young Hanabi thinks the world of her sister and is constantly enquiring when they can play together, but is often left disappointed when Hinata has to go training. She is however, grateful that despite how tired Hinata is at the end of the day she still manages to spend time with her.
"Big sister Hinata, can we have a picnic tomorrow?"
"I'm sorry Hanabi, I have to train, but maybe when I am finish."
"Okay, I will wait for you to return."
"Thank you for understanding, Hanabi.'
Hinata has made it her mission to spend quality time with her sister no matter how much training she does or how tired she was at the end of the day. No one would ever accuse her of being neglectful or uncaring.

Back in the Land of Eddies in the Village Hidden in the Whirlpools, three days after the conversation, the sun was shining, birds were chirping. It was a beautiful morning. Naruto shifted in bed. The light had started to seep into his tent, seeming to curse his very existence.
As he comes to full consciousness of where he was, he was also reminded of his conversation with Jiraiya.
'Naruto, the reason the village hates and shuns you is because the Fourth Hokage sealed the nine tails into you.' It was as though ice water was being pumped through his veins. Of all the things that Jiraiya could say, he certainly wasn't expecting that. 'So he sealed the beast into me to save the village which they all know of. Yet they hate me because of it. Where is the justice in that?'
If that wasn't enough, Jiraiya then informs him that his father was none other than Minato Namikazi, the Fourth Hokage, and the man that sealed the nine tails in him. 'Oh, the irony of things.' It was the only thought that crossed his mind while still reeling from the revelation.
The one good thing he heard in it all was about his mom, Kushina Uzumaki. It's the one thing he can truly hold onto and not feel like the rug was constantly being pulled from under him.
'How the hell am I supposed to feel about a father that knowingly doomed me. Am I supposed to be thankful that he stuck a demon in my gut and then skipped out on me?'
'What was he thinking?'
'Gaaaaaar, this is not what I envisioned I would hear when finding out about my parents.'
Stepping out of his tent, he is met by a somber looking Jiraiya seated around a fire cooking breakfast.
"Hey morning. I'm guessing you slept just about as well as I did judging by bags under your eyes." Jiraiya said by way of a greeting.
"Not sure it's a good morning, but yeah, sleep eluded me for most of the night."
"Want some breakfast? It will stop that stomach of yours from at least eating you a live."
A smirk briefly crossed his lips before he sat across from the older man. "So what are we having?"
"Just some fish and rice I had with me."
A quiet ensued between them as they ate, each loss in their own mind, perhaps contemplating the words spoken the night before and how to face the
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure Naruto, ask anything you need to."
"Do you think he thought of how all this would affect me while doing it?" There were so many emotions flashing through his eyes but none that lasted long enough to name.
'I'm sure he did, but due to the limited time in which he had to operate, there was just no way for him to pen you a note explaining anything. I know, Minato loved you with every fiber of his being and would not willing burden you if he had a choice."
"Then why did he leave me alone to fend for myself?"
"He didn't, the truth is he asked me to be your godfather and I accepted. The problem was I had no experience caring for a newborn and so I left your wellbeing to sensei."
Not sure how to take this new revelation, Naruto decided to ignore it for now and forge on with the question he had originally intended to ask.
"Why was all this kept from me?"
"In terms of your jinchuuriki status, that stems from the irrational fears of those in authority that you would not handle the truth or couldn't be trusted with it. That, maybe you would release it on the village."
"As for your parents, other than retaliation from your father's enemies, there is really no solid reason for keeping them from you."
"Naruto, I never got permission from sensei to tell you any of this, but I felt you deserved to know. Plus, I know I can trust you with the information."
"Thank you for telling me 'Raiya, I promise I will keep it a secret. Not that anyone would believe I'm the fourth's son considering I am a demon to them."
"So are you at least okay for now?"
"Yes, I am okay or will be eventually. I'm not pleased with the way things were handled, but there's nothing I can do about it."
"Good, because I intent to utilize our time to train you."
"Ready when you are."
"First thing first; physical conditioning, followed by taijutsu then ninjutsu. In the afternoon would be best for fuinjutsu practice. By tomorrow I'll have a fix training schedule."
Cleaning up from breakfast, Jiraiya led Naruto to the area he designated for training. Naruto spent an hour doing his warm up routine which included jumping jacks, pushups and stretching.
"Alright Naruto let's spar, I'm going to attack you now and it's going to be for real. Come at me and you have to mean it too, as if I'm really your enemy."
"Aright you got it."
Naruto jumped back from Jiraiya before taking his stance and then charging.
During the break between the morning and afternoon sessions, Naruto used the time to explore the ruins. At the far end of the eastern side of the village he came across what seemed like a clan compound and got curious. Entering what seemed to be the main building, he observed what was left of the contents. Picking up some of the scattered documents from a table he realized that the information pertained to medical herbs.
It would seem that the people that occupied there were medics and they were researching all sorts of illness and cures. Thinking that the information could be useful to him, he started gathering as much as he could and storing it in a scroll. By the time he was finished it was time to return for his afternoon training.
Back at the camping areas, Naruto could see Jiraiya had already set up for class.
"What are we working on this time?"
"Explosive tags. As always, due care must be exercised when forming the kanji for fire. These will be basic level explosive and once you've mastered them, you can then alter to your liking. Let us begin."
At the end of the lesson, Jiraiya had Naruto meditate to help improve his chakra control.
At night Jiraiya insisted that Naruto practice his hand signs as fluidity and speed were important. At the same time Jiraiya engaged him in mental drills to gage his recall ability.
For the remaining month on the island, Jiraiya kept him on a tight schedule with morning and afternoon sessions. He introduced four E-rank techniques, the transformation, teleportation, rope escape and cloak of invisibility jutsus to add to his small but growing repertoire. Naruto was left to develop his own trap making and disabling skills from the scrolls Jiraiya gave him.
When Naruto was allowed his breaks, he continued his exploration into the various sections of the village, collecting various scrolls, tools and artifacts from the various buildings he came across. Some of the things he collected were just so he had something from his mom's home village.
After super one-night Naruto enquired, if Jiraiya would be willing to help him with a project he had in mind.
"Hey Jiraiya."
"What's up Naruto?"
"I need your help with something I plan to work on."
"What would that be?"
"A booklet on edible plants found in the Leaf Village and Fire Country. It would be good for genin and academy students alike."
"Sound interesting; tell you what if you get it done, I'll take it to a publisher for you. That way it's an official piece of work and you can profit from it."
"Sounds great to me. As soon as I return I'll start working on it."
When their conversation was finished, both decided to retire to their tents hoping to get a good night's sleep.
As the time approached to return home, Naruto grew quiet, almost sad at the thought of leaving. However, he was looking forward to see his friends as well as continuing his ninja training.
The week after his return marked the start of the new academic year and Naruto was brimming with excitement.
The first day of class, Iruka took the entire class outside to assess their taijutsu skills or lack thereof; he called on students to either demonstrate their technique or spar against him. Of course, there are students who are indifferent, and would need lots of help.
"But sensei, I don't want to fight my friend!" Choji complained, he was a rather gentle soul and he hated the thought of harming anyone, much less a friend.
Iruka sighed as he explained the purpose of the spar, "But you're not really fighting your friend Choji. You're helping him get stronger! Remember that even the Hokages spar with their friends to get-" Iruka's speech was interrupted by Shikamaru turning his back signaling he would not participate.
"Don't worry Choji, I know this isn't your kind of thing." The Nara said lazily. Iruka sighed loudly as Choji grinned at his friend, "Thanks Shikamaru!"
"Guh! they're both so spineless!" Ino commented and a baffled looking Sakura glanced at her friend, "You know them?" she asked and Ino nodded sadly, "Yeah...our parents know each other..."
"Man, Shikamaru will never make it to Chunin. He's too lazy!" Kiba commented, feeling slightly annoyed that he was robbed of seeing a good fight.
"I don't know Kiba. Life is very long." Shino commented and Kiba sweat dropped at Shino's logical tone.
Iruka looked at his two unwilling fighters, "Fine. But do the harmony symbol."
Shikamaru looked surprised, "Oh! I almost forgot!" He said as he walked back and linked fingers with his friend.
Sasuke and Hinata demonstrated their individual clan technique, while Kiba sparred against Hibachi, Shino against Deichi, Ino against Sakura, … and finally Naruto against Unagi.
At the end of the assessment, Iruka concluded that it would be best to divide the students into three categories, beginner for those with no skills, elementary for those with limited skills and intermediary for those with adequate skills. An instructor would be signed to each group to ensure proper development, continuity and advancement.
While all this was taking place, a certain silver haired Anbu was perched in a tree not too far, observing the proceedings, he as particularly interested in the little blond boy with whiskers.
During the lunch break, Naruto presented each of his friends with gifts from his travel. Accepting the offered items with thanks, each person examines what they have received. Shikamaru opens his to reveal a book on shogi, Choji a cook book, Hinata a book for kunoichi and Kiba a book about dogs, while Shino go a unique insect specimen from Whirlpool.
The afternoon session resumed and students were introduced to hand seals.
"Class this afternoon we'll be learning hand signs or seals."
"Does anyone know the purpose of seals weaved by hands?"
Hands when up and Iruka sensei pointed to Sakura for the answer
"They allow the user to perform ninjutsu and genjutsu."
"Correct anyone else." This time Shino got to answer.
"Hand signs aide with the summoning and moulding chakra necessary to perform technique."
"Also correct, however, to do this you must know what these hand signs are."
Turning to the board Iruka proceeded to write the name of the seals along with the kanji for each.
"Pay attention. What you see here are the names and the corresponding kanji for each of the seal you must learn. Now watch closely as I demonstrate each seal."
For the next hour this was the lesson. The final session of the day introduced students to theory foraging and hunting. As the school day came to an end, Iruka sensei laid out the schedule of courses to be thought for the school year. Basically, all subject matter remain except for history; adding taijutsu, molding of chakra/hand signs and foraging and hunting. With that said class was dismissed.
Later that evening as Naruto was placing his new books on the shelf in his bedroom, his eyes landed on the book from Tsuki no Uzumaki and he suddenly remembered what had happened the last time he held the book. Removing it from its place, he once again turned to the seal, and ran his finger over it again; this time instead of a translucent figure manifesting, Naruto was pulled into what appear to be a large library.
'Greetings to you Uzumaki Kushina or descendent. Welcome to the Spiral. Please listen carefully as I will not repeat myself.'
'Every scroll, book or paper contained here represents the knowledge that has been accumulated by our clan over the decades. In order for you to access this archive you must first create a chakra construct of yourself within your mind, which will act as the archivist.'
'Now since you cannot always enter your mind, you will only need to ask yourself a question and the archivist will locate and download the data into consciousness. That way you are not overwhelmed with too much at once.'
'The Archivist can also pull you in here for information purposes. It is best to leave instructions for topics you wish to cover so that it can be compiled and transmitted evenly.'
'Imagine you need to create a seal for storing of a live human, then all you need is to inwardly ask the question 'how do I create a seal to storage a person?', the information pertaining to those types of seals with be given to you and from there you must create the seal.
"So let me get this straight, I am not going to get images of a seal to just draw from memory?" ask Naruto.
'Correct, if that were to happen then you would not be learning. That does not mean there are not samples of seals; it will only be shown to you after you have processed the information given you.'
"Okay I understand. I wouldn't want it any other way. Thanks old man."
'You are most welcome. Remember never share this information or copy it down in the real world. It must be passed on as I have done with you.'
With that said Tsuki no Uzumaki disappeared.
Exiting his mind Naruto tossed himself on his bed too excited at the prospect of what he could accomplish with the information given him. He did a mental happy dance.
'Before I delve into that new information; I need to finish compiling pictures and names for my booklet on edible herbs found in the village and around Fire Country.' This was something he thought up while visiting Uzushiokagure.
A week later Hinata finally picked up the book Naruto had given her. Things were extremely hectic with training; her father was still not completely pleased with her progress in the clan's taijutsu technique and so the instructors put her through the paces day after day.
She was still unsure of herself at times, but was willing to work hard at her training until she was where she wanted and needed to be. The fact that her father still refuses to train her personally hurt, but she was determined not to let it hinder her.
Opening the heavy bounded book, the first thing she realized was that it belonged to another person and was apparent a journal of sorts, but she was curious about its contents. So she began to read its entries.
Week 1
Dear Journal,
My name is Kishiko and I am the heiress to the Otomo clan but it might not be for long. I have been told that I am a disappointment by my father because I am weak, shy and not what the clan needs. For a long time I wallowed in self pity unable to move myself forward and change the path I was traveling.
That is until a few weeks ago. I was in the clan archives when I came across a quote that changed everything. It read:
'The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upwards through the night.'
At first I didn't quite grasp what it meant so I asked questions and was given explanations. From there I knew what I had to do.
I thought about what I wanted to achieve and then formulated a plan on how to attain it. I had always wanted to grow strong, but not for myself, but just because my family demanded it and it place so much pressure on me that I was crumbling beneath the weight.
So I started with the simple things that could boost my confidence. I changed the way I dressed. I used to wear bulky clothing that made it difficult to move during training and kept me hot, so much so that persons thought I was sick.
I corrected my posture. The way I stood or sat told a lot about my state of mine. I tended to slouch when standing before my father or the council or when I stood beside other people. It gave the impression I was not interested in what they were saying or didn't wish to be there. It also told them I was intimidated by their presence. At nights I would put books on my head and walk the length of my room.
I then adjusted my speech pattern. I would at times stammer, though I did not have a speech impediment. I took lessons in speech outside the clan, it emphasized the need to take measured breaths to keep one's mind calm and focus in order to express one's thoughts as words. I learned to speak precise and clear.
This was a process I repeated for weeks in the privacy of my bedroom. I would then reveal this change gradually.
As Hinata read the words she could identify with the stranger, even wondering if she was perhaps imagining things. She could remember her father's words as if it was yesterday, still, seeing the look in his eyes as he declared she was weak and a waste of his time.
Week 2
Hello Journal
So I have realized that my chakra control needs to be refined. I've started the different exercises, but my favourite is walking on water. It's so cool.
I'm also conditioning my body to increase stamina. This is very important, because it will help me last longer in taijutsu practice and in real fights.
I have a list of exercises I do first thing in the morning before going to classes.
Laps around the field
Push ups
Sit ups
Jump rope
Then for my taijutsu, I practice my hits and kicks repeatedly against the training posts. It strengthens my legs and arms.
I figured this out by observing the older kids practice.
Oh, I've also had to up my food intake all be it a balance one. More meats, vegs, fruits, nuts and grains. I eat three large meals every day. The energy is needed for the rigorous activities.
Alright that's it for today. Bye.
Pulling out her own journal where she keeps her thoughts, Hinata began scribbling as ideas came to mind. Once finished she decided to read one more entry before retiring for the night.
Week 7
Hello Journal
It's been a while I know, but things have been hectic. Nevertheless, I am happy to report that my training has been going great.
Father has already begun to notice my improvements in stamina during taijutsu training which just proves hard work does pay rewards.
I've been looking into doing medical ninjutsu to help heal myself and others. This will come in handy when I go on missions or just healing myself after practice. It also requires great chakra control. Just means I need to keep up with the exercises I've been doing.
I'm also experimenting with healing creams, elixirs, and antidotes from a scroll I found at the library. I'm going to become a badass ninja just watch me. However, I'm keeping this training a secret for now, not sure how they might take it.
Closing the book and putting it aside, Hinata turned out the lights and laid back in bed, her thoughts full of ideas on how to up her training. 'I have much to do it seems if I'm going to be truly strong, and measure up to what the clan need me to be. Perhaps I can ask my friends advice on formulating a good training regimen.' With that last thought she fell asleep.
The academy was becoming demanding as students were pushed to their limits in physical training, this is especially so for those who have no outside assistance with training.
"This is just crazy; I don't want to be too muscular that I'm mistaken for a guy. One female student remarked, as they were out for physical conditioning, and taijutsu practice.
"Suck it up ladies; Sasuke-kun likes strong women." Responded Ino as she and Sakura ran pass.
Naruto and the other boys were observing them all and high fiving each other. They had completed their laps and were doing sit ups and pushups.
"They are so easy to manipulate." Barked Kiba; with Akamaru agreeing with him.
"Yeah, all you have to do is tell them their precious Sasuke-kun likes something and they are so eager to please." Shikamaru added, looking bored as ever.
"It's been proven the best way to get them to train as well." Shino gave his input.
"Your right Shino, it has. I was getting tired of them complaining about being sweaty from training. Something just had to be done so I volunteered." Naruto declared, clearly not sorry for his actions.
Later they along with Hinata sat in their usual spot for lunch and discussed their thoughts on how the training was benefiting them. Hinata used the opportunity to ask for their advice on her personal training.
"Guys, what do you think of learning medical ninjutsu?"
"Are you planning to be a medic Hinata?" Inquired Kiba
"Kiba, you don't answer questions with questions." Shino reprimanded him.
"Geesh, must you always suck the life out of everything."
"I think it's a wonderful skill to have, especially in the work we do." Informed Naruto
"Yeah Hinata, you'd make a great medic, you've got a caring personality." Choji told her with much excitement.
"This is so troublesome to think about, but I think it's something you should take up."
"Thanks guys, this means a lot to me."
Past meets future…
It took a month, but Kakashi was finally ready to introduce himself to his sensei's son. Remembering what Jiraiya told him about the boy's habits, he set off to the training ground with Jiraiya's warning playing in his mind.
Flashback
Once the Hokage had assign them the mission to go through Danzo's documents and Jiraiya finished briefing the Hokage on the Uchiha operation, Kakashi, Chinami and Jiraiya left the tower.
Inviting Kakashi to walk with him, they headed off in the direction of the memorial stone for privacy sake.
"You did a really good job with the mission, I am extremely proud of you, I also know Minato and your team would be as well. However, before you interrupt, please hear me out."
"I know you're an adult and it is your life, but I also know Sakumo and Minato would have wanted me to look in on you as well and while I've done a terrible job of staying in touch with you, it doesn't mean I don't care for you."
"I appreciate your concern, but I'm doing just fine."
"And that's good to hear, but I know differently. Your grief is suffocating you whether you want to admit it or not."
"We really don't need to have this conversation; I've already told you I'm fine."
Shaking his head at the denial but not deterred, Jiraiya forged ahead.
"I get that you cared for your team, that their deaths created a hole in your life and left you alone; I also get why you're blaming yourself for their deaths. You're mad that you didn't do more, and wasn't able to save them. However, you're not the first that's felt that way and your won't be the last."
Holding up his hand to stop Kakashi's rebuttal, he continued on.
"I can tell you right now that you're not honouring them by living this way; they willingly sacrificed their lives to ensure you lived, but all you've done is piss on that sacrifice."
"I'm not saying you should forget them nor that you should stop visiting their graves, but standing there for hours, being late for meetings is taking it too far."
"I appreciate your advice, but I have it under control."
"That's just it; you don't have it under control. It's eating you alive."
"Being what you thought Obito was without truly knowing is just making a mock of his life. I can tell you now that he was late because he really did stop to help elderly villagers."
"You really want to honour them? Then get yourself together, live a life that is full of meaning. Hang out with your friends or make new ones, training daily wouldn't hurt you, advance your fuinjutsu skills Minato taught you, expand your original jutsu. Get married and have kids, anything is better than what you got going on."
"Finally, go visit your sensei's brat. I'm sure you know him; he's the kid in the academy with the blonde hair, blue eyes and whiskers. He's a ball of sunshine and you might actually like him."
"It's not going to be easy, but I hope you take my words into consideration; because I am only looking out for your best interest. Now go on you can leave."
End of Flashback
After the talk, Kakashi had wrestled with himself for months. Even though what Jiraiya said made sense, he struggled with putting an end to what had essentially become his live over the years.
He evenly resolved in himself to get help from the Anbu appointed counselor and has been attending regular sessions two days a week for the past six months.
Arriving at the grounds, Kakashi stood a ways off, observing Naruto train himself, but it wasn't long before he was spotted. It was now or never, he thought to himself, moving forward he came to a stop directly in front of the boy.
"Hello Naruto."
"Hello Inu."
He was shocked that his sensei's son recognized him by his Anbu code name, but was glad that he was not forgotten.
"H-how did you know we're the same?"
"You smell like him." 'You also feel like him' was left unsaid.
Silence.
Then movement as Naruto threw himself at Kakashi in an embrace, happy to see the man, who always came looking for him, when he failed to return to the orphanage. His voice was muffled from pressing into Kakashi's form.
"Naruto, I can't make out what you're saying like this."
He pulled his face away and spoke softly.
"Sorry, sorry."
"You don't have to apologise, just repeat what you said before."
"I said I thought you died or something 'cause you just disappeared, or maybe you didn't like me anymore."
"Silly boy, I don't hate you. After, your caregiver was assigned to you, Hokage-sama thought it best I return to doing mission that's all. Since then I've been out the village for long periods of time."
"Okay, that's good to hear. I'm really glad you came to visit."
"So am I. Now what have you been up to?"
"Besides training myself and attending the academy, I go exploring sometimes up in the dark hills. There are traps up there that I wanted check out and I'm also collecting edible and medicinal herbs for my booklet. As a matter of fact, I went up there about a week ago and found a lot of weapons. It seems there was a fight."
"I also found a strange kunai in a bird's nest. There was some kind of commotion so I hid myself, waited till it was over and left. Found out later that foreign ninja were up there."
Shaking himself out of his shocked state, Kakashi inquired about the weapon.
"I glad you're okay, but listen Naruto, that strange kunai you found, do you still have it?"
"Yeah, I sealed it up with the other weapons from the hill."
"Good, its evidence in the case against those shinobi and I need to take it to the Hokage."
Unsealing the kunai and handing it to Kakashi; Naruto easily resealed and stored the scroll once again.
Surprised, but proud of the skill Naruto displayed, Kakashi was curious about how he learned to use sealing scrolls.
"That's a nice skill to have. You don't mine me asking who taught you to use sealing scrolls."
"Oh, a good friend of mine did."
"Okay, well good job."
"Thanks Inu."
Realising he had yet to tell Naruto his name, Kakashi laughed outwardly at himself.
"Naruto, my name is Hatake Kakashi. You're not supposed to use my Anbu code name if I'm not in uniform."
"Okay. Wait, Hatake, as in Hatake Sakumo?"
"Yes, he was my father. How do you know him?"
"I did a project on him last school year."
"I see."
"Hey Kakashi, want to spar with me?"
"Sure, but for a little while, I need to get this to the Hokage."
"Let's begin then."
This would be one of many sparring sessions between the two once Kakashi was in the village.
As they approached the half way mark of the school year, Iruka arranged a field trip for his students. The purpose was for them to test their knowledge of the edible plants they learned of and to put into practice their different hunting skills.
As luck would have it, Jiraiya had gotten a publisher to accept Naruto's manuscript on the usage of edible and medicinal plants complete with illustrations. Instead of a small booklet it turned into a book with the sheer amount of information that Naruto had gathered.
It was on sale in the village for all to buy and was introduced to the academy as a supplementary text.
"Good morning class."
"Good morning Iruka sensei."
"As you know we'll be having our field trip tomorrow. Let me see the hands of those who have acquired the foraging guidebook?"
Almost all the hands went up.
"Good, don't forget to pack it."
"Sensei?"
"Yes Sakura."
"I've been meaning to ask about the author of the book."
"What about them?"
"Well it says Uzumaki Naruto," already the other students were snickering, and whispering that it couldn't be the one in class with them, "I was just wondering if it was this Naruto or if some else had the same name in the village."
"Honestly Sakura, I don't know. Master Jiraiya of the Sannin is the one pushing the book."
"Oh okay."
"Anyone has more questions or comment?" Everyone was silent.
"Right so unto the hunting aspect of the trip. You will be expected to demonstrate at least five different types of traps."
Naruto was having a restless night; even though he was tired from training he just could not fall asleep. Deciding to utilize his time being constructive, he entered the Spiral to talk with the Archivist.
"Hey you, how's it going in here?"
"It's going good. Shouldn't you be asleep?"
"Should be, but can't fall asleep no matter how long I lay in bed."
"Anything specific you needed?"
"No, just thought I'd stop by and chat."
"Okay, but since you're here there are three things I'd like to bring to your attention."
"What would that be?"
"The Uzumaki clan, for starters was said to be savage, however what really cemented their status as a clan was their bloodline limits or Kekkei genkai; now listen to me carefully, because when most people hear of this, they automatically think of clans like the Hyuga and Uchiha, but they just have outward indicators. There are many clans with blood limits that are less noticeable."
"Now for an attribute to be considered a blood limit(kekkei genkai) an anomaly must occur within the DNA of a person, therefore whatever strand this anomaly gets attached to must become genetically binding in order for it to be passed on from parent to offspring."
"The more dominant the gene is, determines the strength of the bloodline; this will be evident by showing up in consecutive generations of the same bloodline. When it comes to the Uzumaki clan they have several attributes that meet this criterion."
"There's the rapid healing factor, the vast chakra capacity and chakra shaping. It is state that individual Uzumaki are born with unique chakra abilities, but it's vague. I still have to go through the tomes, but I think we've inherited these blood limits even though we're only half Uzumaki. We just need to figure out the chakra shaping part and we'll be good to go."
"You said you had three things to discuss with me."
Presenting Naruto with a scroll to read the archivist launched into an overview of what he had discovered the Village Hidden in the Whirlpools since being assigned to his post.
"What you are reading is an alliance agreement between Uzushiokagure or the Land Hidden in the Whirlpools and several other small countries. Some wanted to do trade and others wanted protection. What is interesting is that the Uzukage or clan head Ashina Uzumaki, as a sign of his commitment gave each country something of value to keep. I think when we become a ninja we should reach out to them and reconnect."
"This sounds interesting. What else have you found?"
"Whirlpool built a mask temple on the outskirts of Konoha. It contains some very dangerous masks. Now that the clan isn't around anymore, the building is most likely in a dilapidated state and will need some attention to secure its contents."
"On a side note, I've found a chakra storage seal we should try creating to help with our massive chakra problem. This one does not require the precise control for storage as the hundred healing seal and should suit our purpose."
"How complex a seal are we talking and where is the chakra going to be stored?"
"It's an intermediary level seal and the chakra gets stored in the seal itself."
"Alright I'm on board with that; send the information to me so I can start practicing."
"Will do."
"If that's all, then I'm out, really need to get some sleep."
"Oh Naruto, one last thing."
"What's that?"
"My name is Chimon from now on."
"Got it, later."
Months passed, it was time for end of year examinations to determine who would progress to the third year of training.
"Alright everyone, results will be given tomorrow. Make sure you're here to receive them."
"As this is the end of the school year, the academy willing be offering summer training for those in need. I have the forms here you can take one, fill it out and return it tomorrow when you pick up your results. You're all dismissed."
During the summer, Naruto worked hard on creating the chakra storage seal. Once completed, he tested to ensure it worked, then had Chinami apply it to his right should blade. The seal is designed to store vast amounts of chakra for future use.
"This is great, during the day all I need to do is divert some of my chakra to the seal and continue as normal and there is no limit to the amount I can store."
"Maybe I should have you apply one to me Naruto."
"Just let me know when you are ready."
Over the summer break, Shikamaru, Shino and Choji were at their respective clan compound training with their dads. Kiba along with Akamaru was training with his mom and Hinata with her instructors and Neji.
On off days, the gang would occasionally meet up at the park just to hang out and enjoy their break from the academy.
Constantly hearing how his friends were training in the private grounds belonging to their clans, Naruto came to the realization that he needed to look into purchasing a piece of property. The space would need to accommodate a house, gardens and training ground.
Upon returning home from one of their many play dates, he pitched the idea to Chinami who thought it was a doable and encouraged him to create a plan towards reaching his goal.
Giving it some thought, he realized he had the perfect avenue to gain the funds needed. Remembering his first book had done fairly well considering it was about plants he was sure a different book might do even better.
'If I wrote another book and it's as successful then I wouldn't have to cut into training by getting a job.' Scratching his head as he paced his room, he paused as an idea struck him.
'Yes, I've got it. If I write a story book that appeal to kids my age then parents will buy it.'
'But what would I write about?' continuing with his pacing, he wracked his brain once again for ideas and like lightning it struck him.
'Of course, I'm so dense at times. I'll write about my adventures in the summer, some will be real and some made up to add excitement. Yes that's what I'll do.'
'I need a title for my book, something that's catchy. Yata! I'll call it, adventures of fishcake and his friends. That way no one will suspect I am the main character.'
'I'm brilliant.'
'Though I wonder if it's wise to use my name as the author, cause the guys will know it's me whose writing. Jiraiya will know what to do, I'll be sure to ask him.'
Getting out pen and paper he began writing, everything else forgotten for the moment.
Before they knew it, they were heading back to the academy for a third year, where things were likely to get even more demanding.
The schedule of classes for this year will center on new courses; ninjutsu, camping and cookery, first aid and anatomy. The continuation of taijutsu and physical conditioning, chakra control, moulding of chakra will also form part of the curriculum.
"Good morning students, I trust that you all had a good vacation and that those of you who signed up for the mentorship program utilized it well."
"This morning we will be revising hand signs and how to mould chakra. When I call your name please come forward and demonstration both."
When his time came, Naruto demonstrate effortlessly the hand signs without calling out the names. He then began moulding his chakra to enhance his sense of smell.
At the same time, Chinami was at the hospital being treated for a burn to her arm. The attending medic was none other than Kabuto Yakushi, who she had befriended about a year ago. The two sometimes met up for tea and would talk about everything and nothing particular.
Later that evening Hinata was in her room going through the scrolls on anatomy she got from the library. As she sat on the floor reading, there were books balancing on her head to ensure good posture and a kunai balancing on the tip of her fingers.
She was currently working on an ointment to soothe aching muscles like the ones she had from training most of the day trying to master the thirty-two palms.
Of late she has been pushing herself to surpass her limits knowing that to truly be strong one must keep advancing against all odds. She still has her dreams for the future to achieve, dreams that include changing the clan and uniting it. There was nothing more import to her than her family.
Elsewhere in the compound, Hiashi was busy in his office going through paperwork when a knock was heard at his door.
"Enter."
"May I crave your indulgence for a little while?" said a soft voice in his ear.
"Hizashi, what brings you here at this hour?" Surprise clear in his voice.
"I wish to discuss a matter with you Lord Hiashi. Permission to speak freely?"
"Granted. Now what is this all about?"
"I've noticed that you no longer train Hinata, yet she is not removed from her position as heir to the clan."
Not liking where this was going, Hiashi sought to maintain his composure, knowing it wouldn't do any good to start an agreement with his estranged brother.
"Not that it's any of your concern, but I do not find she is worth my time, she is weak, indecisive, she lacks the strength required to be an effective clan head."
"Does that mean that Neji no long has to be her protector?"
'I see, so that was what this talk was all about.'
"For now he must continue on in his roll, Hinata's fate is still uncertain."
"Really, and you wonder why your daughter has those characteristics?"
"Watch what you say Hizashi, I may have granted you permission to speak freely, but not for anything else."
"I am merely pointing out that what you seem to dislike in your daughter is really just a reflection of what I also see in you."
"Nonsense."
"Is it aniki?" He raised an eyebrow, daring him to keep denying the statement. "I guess I do know you better than you know yourself."
With that Hizashi stood and bowed, then existed the office leaving a speechless clan head behind.

Months passed before Naruto had a completed draft of his book. Now he was ready to have someone look at it for him.
"Good morning Chinami." Naruto called out.
"Morning Naruto, how are you doing today?"
"I'm fine thank you. Do you have time to look at something for me?" He asked hesitantly.
"Sure, what do you need?"
Handing her the document he was holding. "Can you please review this draft for me? I want to send it off to Jiraiya later this week."
"I'd be happy to." She accepted the document with a smile.
"Thanks a lot Chinami; this means a lot to me."
"No problem."
"Well, I'll see you later; I'm going to practice some jutsu and then some fuinjutsu."
"How is that coming along by the way?"
"Well, I've already mastered the wild water wave, waterfall basin and, the water prison techniques; I am only proficient in the three lightning and wind jutsus and that's because I've practiced them less."
"If you need my help all you got to do is ask."
"I know that, but I need to do it on my own."
"Created any new seal lately?"
"I have a few ideas, but they are just in the preliminary stages."
"Alright, get going."
Nodding at her, he opened the door and left the apartment.
Alone, she retreated to her room with a snack to start reading.
Naruto had a restless night, it felt as though something kept groaning next to his ear and wouldn't quiet down so he could sleep.
It was approaching the end of the academic year, just one more to go before he was a ninja and he couldn't wait.
"Hey guys," he great his friends upon entering the classroom, "what's up?"
"Hey Naruto." they greeted in unison
"We were asking Hinata-chan about her progress with the medical training." Shino added.
Turning to look at the only female in the group, Naruto raised an eyebrow indicating he too wanted to know. Taking the hint she responded to their query.
"It has been going very well; I have been reading a lot and have made a few ointments and elixirs. I also have lessons this summer at the hospital."
"That is good to hear, we are all rooting for you to do well." Naruto told her with the others following along with similar sentiments.
Take your seats everyone and let's begin. Iruka stated as he entered the room. With that lessons began.
The following week started with taijutsu exams and of course it highlighted who had very good skills and those that had some skills. In reality, many of the students' taijutsu was clumsy, disjointed, and could use more work.
"Alright class, listen up. We are at the end of another year; results will be available the day after exams finish. We are also offering the mentorship program for the summer; I implore you to make use of it. Now back inside you go."
"Hey Sakura," Ino whispered to her rival, "you planning to attend the summer training?
"What's it to you?" Asked Sakura irritated that her rival
"Just curious that's all."
