Chapter 80
Rebirth
Kurata was many things.
A scientist. A genetic researcher. A poor shot with a firearm. A xenophobic man. A coward. The list could go on for quite some time and we probably wouldn't reach the bottom. Not that such people seemed to remember him. If anything, they preferred to forget.
Yet as his eyes opened within this new, unknown space, he was certain that he was out of his league.
"It's been a long time… Kurata." a voice remarked and the scientist's gaze shifted about, eventually focusing on a large cat on the other side of the room. It's fur looked like flames, with a pair of red eyes staring him down. "Have you forgotten?"
And it all comes rushing back to him. That first trip to the digital world and the resulting events that soon followed. The creation of the gizumon, the bio-hybrids and that goddamn demon lord. Every life he extinguished, every life he thought he come close to having a chance at ending. Then there was the time he spent down with those demon lords and was forced to suffer.
"No?" Kurata remarked and watched his foe jump towards him.
"Do not lie to me." the cat remarked and flashed its teeth. "This crime, while atrocious, is forgivable."
The words seemed to catch the scientist by surprise, especially coming from the very creature that he had attempted to gun down that first night.
"So are you mad that I lied at you or were you just testing me then?" Kurata countered and made a glance down towards his body. "You tricked me…"
All he got was a laugh. If anything, it made him want to curse everything about this. From its citizens to the very ground they stood upon.
"Did you really think it would be that easy? That if you waited long enough, things would turn out alright in this world?" the cat continued and gave his opponent a couple of scratches. "If anything, what is happening to you is a wonderful and delightful gift you don't deserve. But her it is, my child."
Light erupted from his body, bringing with it a sense of shrinking. Everything seemed to be taunting Kurata, mocking him for falling into such an obvious trap. But at the same time, they seemed to be celebrating his fall. Within his blurry vision, he could see balloons in all sorts of colors and shapes with streamers thrown in for good measure.
"This is not my end." he muttered and got some laughter from his opponent.
"Your right." the cat continued and pushed him down. "But you're oh so wrong."
The world grew even more blurrier while at the same time, with everything seeming even bigger now.
But then the shrinking stopped and the light increased in intensity. Things began to feel cramped, his body being smushed into a more suitable shape. Whatever that was, the scientist didn't have long to really dwell on it. His breathing slowed as thoughts began to get harder and harder to think.
Darkness then took hold, with warmth coming next.
"Ugh…" Kurata whispered as his eyes slowly closed, bringing with it a variety of strange shapes and images. Had he better in a far better state, he probably would've realized that his own data was being rewritten right before his very eyes. One could only wonder what he do. Maybe he would have tried to fight it. Or perhaps the scientist would have just given in. But we'll never know, since the box disappeared and took both the cat and egg with it.
Which is possibly for the better.
