As we look forward, sometimes it good to look back. As such, some love for the 'original couple'. Still not the surprise, sadly. Next one, though.

Chapter 81

Breaking Free

The cowgirl was afraid.

Normally, this feeling was a comforting one, the sort that gave her the drive she needed in situations like this.

But this was a different feeling. Something about this whole situation screamed 'trap' to her. Yet, there wasn't much of a way of a choice. She either found what she was looking for or die trying.

"Please be in here." she thought, letting her gaze fall to the pendant around her neck. Carefully, she pulled it open.

Inside was a pair of pictures. The one on the left was of a pair of children, a relic of the last person who had it before. The picture opposite of it, was a lot more personal. That one was of her beloved and herself, lips locked.

It had been such a nice, beautiful day when they had the photo taken. A far cry from the heavy rains that beat down upon the Empress's Airship. The whole day had been pretty bad weather-wise. Sunshine seemed almost distant, with dark clouds coming in from all directions. Maybe it was their punishment for this mess. Yeah, that could be it. A divine act brought down upon her.

Personally, she just wanted the stupid thing to fall apart. Maybe right on the empress herself.

If given the choice, she would give the woman a first-rate slapping. That way, she could suffer for all that she had hurt. For what she did to her beloved. Then she would fling her off this floating pile of junk. After that, she smash the airship itself into her. Just for the sake of killing two birds with one stone.

"Oh really, now?" a voice taunted as the cowgirl shifted her focus. The empress stood there in all her glory, a truly wonderful bitch that the cowgirl had to thank for this predicament. "My, you surely think the worse of me."

"Where is she." the cowgirl countered, flashing what looks to be a revolver.

"Why don't you see for yourself?"

That isn't a good enough answer, with the empress taking a bullet to the stomach. For such a wound, she still stands tall and unflinching. Almost to mock her, to try and bring out some weakness that she hid within.

"You leave me no choice then." her opponent remarked and lets out a whistle.

The sound of pincers clacking and eight legs moving about fills the air, with the cowgirl taking the time to replace all six bullets in her gun. While unconfirmed, she already knows what had happened. If nothing else, she would make sure that the person behind it was a sent a clear message. In blood maybe, or perhaps in shrapnel.

"Come, my spiroid!" the empress shouted and turned her attention back to the cowgirl. "Now, what sort of roid should I make you into?"

She let out a snicker, following it up by flipping the bird.

"Childish bitch." the cowgirl muttered back and took a deep breath. It was quite challenging to hold herself back, not wishing to unleash her wrath on this one woman. While deserving of such a blessing, that would do little to change what was done. "You just can't leave things alone, can you?"

The empress let out more laughter. Had she not reloaded, the cowgirl probably would've taken this opportunity to shoot her in the head and be done with this. But that was not the way, at least for the moment. Right now, she needed to focus on the incoming threat and handle it to the best of her abilities.

And then she appeared.

For what was supposed to look like a spider, the sproid seemed to look more like a drider than an actual arachnid. Eight violet eyes stared out towards the cowgirl, while a pair of sharp pincers click in excitement. But at the same time, sadness.

"I'll make this quick." the cowgirl whispered as her eyes locked with the spider. "While I can't promise that I can get you of there, I can break her hold on you."

Very carefully, the sproid gives a nod. While it doesn't quite understand what exactly is going on, something about the cowgirl made her trust the woman.

"What are you waiting for?" the empress screeched and the spider creature galloped forth, pulling out what looked to be a set of butterfly swords. They looked well worn, but far more suited for human hands rather than that of a spider. "Kill her!"

The cowgirl fires off a shot, making sure to aim for a spot that would cause lasting damage. Her opponent was working on a similar theory, usually aiming for the hair or even her hat. Round after round the two went, with both eventually coming to an impasse.

For the cowgirl, it was getting down to her last bullet. For the spider, everything was starting to become a blur. Foreign feelings were seeping into her internal programming, turning what had once been an unstoppable machine into something mortal.

But all that seemed to do was just make the empress mad.

"Why aren't you even listening to me?!" the woman screamed, charging head-on into battle. "I want you to kill her, not t-"

A shot rings out and she falls to the ground, a martyr for those who follow her.

"Ugh..." the spider whispered, her restraints falling to the ground, revealing the mostly unharmed body of a woman.

"Nina!" the cowgirl shouted, cradling the somehow conscious form of her beloved.

"Ease up a tiny bit." the woman whispered. "We can once we're off this dang thing."

The cowgirl gave a nod and led Nina over to a nearby mechanical horse.

"Hold on tight." she whispers as the two get on. What follows, is a running jump into the rain. While the odds are in the duo's favor for once, that doesn't make this act any less safe. The underlings of the empress could quite easily strike them down, mid-freefall. But, it would seem that they have been allowed to escape.

Maybe they were afraid that they would suffer the same fate as their master. Or they could wish that they wanted to be the one's in charge. Whatever the case, the ground still felt nice.

"Thanks Aurora." Nina whispered and pulled her girlfriend in, planting a kiss on the cheek. "Let's go home."

And with that, they headed off.

This is mostly an excuse to do Hunters. Sorry?
