Chapter 92
Cupcakes & Cuddling
"Come on!"
For Megumi Shirakawa and Miki Kurosaki, a task as simple as baking a bunch of cupcakes was an attempt at what felt like rocket science to the pair. While the result was fine enough, they hadn't come out anywhere near what they looked like on the box.
"It's alright, dear." Megumi cooed and put a hand on her girlfriend's back. They had recently gotten back together, having been on their own separate paths these last couple years.
For Miki, that meant going back to college. While she was majoring in forensics and criminal behavior, that still allowed for the occasional meetup… if any of her friends were actually able to meet up.
As for Megumi herself, she had decided to keep being a police officer. Sure, the loss of her PawnChessmon had been a bit of a blow, just not enough from keeping her from doing her best job and having a social life as well. That's just life to an extent. People come and go, sometimes returning…
Sometimes not.
But right now, the wannabe couple was just trying to figure what part of this went wrong. Was it in the way they had mixed the ingredients together?
"Everything looks like it mixed properly." Miki remarked and watched Megumi look into the bowl. Sure enough, the consistency of the mix looked smooth and chocolatey. Though, the box with the directions laid discarded on the floor.
"Let's see here." Megumi remarked and picked up the box, looking it over. At first, her gaze looked unchanged. But then she did a double take. "Crud. We didn't put in the eggs."
She walked over to the fridge and pulled the door open. Then her gaze fell to the ground, only to find her way back over to Miki's face.
"We're out of eggs, aren't we?"
Miki got a nod for that as her girlfriend made her way back over. While a trip to the supermarket was definitely in order, I doubt it would be a good idea to do it at 11 pm of all times. Which brought a number of interesting questions. Some of which I don't think either woman knows the answer of.
"Want to cuddle and talk about work?" Megumi remarked as she stared towards Miki. While it took her former partner a couple seconds to register her response, she was pulled on over to the couch. "I'll take that as a yes then."
As furniture went, the couch had seen far better days. Not that the duo minded. Miki had gotten for a steal of a price at a flea market. Or was it a college reseller? One of the two.
"So how was work today?" Miki whispered and watched her girlfriend lean forward. Which was then followed by a chuckle of all things.
"In between all the paperwork and the frequent fliers, there's never a dull moment." the police officer explained and placed what looked to be a remote on a side table. "But it isn't the same without you by my side."
That remark got her deep breath. While Miki had enjoyed being a police officer post DAT's, a part of her wanted to branch out. Try something new while at the same time, continuing the journey she had started with her partner. Thankfully, she had decided to stay close to home. Just in case another digimon attack occurred and they were somehow needed for one more adventure..
"I'm sure." she mumbled, only to find herself wrapped up in a hug from her girlfriend. It felt quite nice, like sitting right by a fireplace on a cold winter day. "Any plans for tomorrow?"
The two broke away, making a gaze towards their sweets.
"Want a cupcake?"
Megumi nodded and watched her girlfriend get up from the couch. A minute or two later, she was back with a cupcake. One for her and one for Megumi.
They weren't the best baked goods either had ever had, but not the worse. Which was totally fine with them.
Kind of like the flow of life some days. You can be on top of the world one moment and hit rock bottom the next. Sometimes, there's a grace area. Other days, there isn't as much of one. But as long as you keep going, things will work out.
"What are you even talking about?"
Uh, never mind. Just getting nostalgic.
Notes:
I wish you were all here, I guess. Just ain't the same without you, but I'm just preaching to a choir that might not be here.
