The Light, The Dark, The Snow and the Fire
This Chapter is mostly set in the present date apart from the last of the Time Jump Arc for the story. Now the story will continue and soon will be back to the main story. 8 months have passed since the trials have started and we finally return to Simon.
Simon
The former king of Ice and Snow, the survivor of 1000 years of torture and chaos, Simon Petrikov ran throughout the shells of what once was a vibrant city. He ran through the rubble trying to cover as much ground as he possibly could. He needed to find somewhere to rest the night. Somewhere to shelter him, somewhere where he couldn't be found. The wizard searched frantically occasionally stopping to catch his breath and wipe away the beads of sweat that gathered at his brow. "There... I can take cover there". The Prince of Snow climbed what appeared to the be the tallest building left standing in the decayed city being careful not to dislodge the loosely collected pile of bricks. He sat down against the wall and finally started to catch his breath. He lifted his shirt and looked down at all the scars and tears that still covered his flesh.
They were still new enough to not had healed but he knew they would. They always did heal in the end. In the 8 months that Simon had been surviving in Lll he had been captured by the Cadaver a number of times. Sometimes Simon would defeat it, rendering it unable to move for up to weeks at a time but other times he just slowed it down. The rest of the time Simon wasn't so fortunate and the Cadaver caught him. Each and every time it did catch him he got to experience a new form of torture while the beast laughed and laughed. He'd had his bones taken out one by one, had his fingernails and teeth pulled out again and again. He had his organs eaten from the inside out while he watched.
There was no dying... no passing out... no release from this relentless world but still Simon would never give up. Since his time in this world something new had awoken within Simon, the crown itself seemed to want to give him the strength to survive and spoke with him, not with visions and not with madness but with strength and power. He felt it, each and everytime he was torn apart, each time he beat the monster he felt stronger and in his last encounter he may have took some damage but he'd sent the beast flying into the ocean entrapped with Ice that instead of melting will continue freezing the water around it for up to 24 hours. By the time it stopped working the disgusting creature would be at the bottom of the ocean and Simon would be far away.
"Time to rest... I need... to sleep". The prince thought to himself. He closed his eyes and drifted of to sleep. The times he had been able to catch some sleep he'd been having weird dreams about meeting a certain man in a certain place where he came to own the crown he bore on his head. He wasn't really sure what this all meant but he enjoyed seeing a familiar world. Sometimes he would dream of Betty and Marceline and the family that they would build. He thought maybe one day in the future about having a son or daughter of his own, someone who would look up to Marcy like an older sister. Would they turn out like Finn, strong and brave who would risk everything to defend the weak or would they be like Lumen, cunning and caring who would do anything to help others and make them happy. These very thoughts are what kept the wizards mind pure and strong... he needed to be strong as he had a family to build back in Ooo. This time however Simon drifted off into a deep sleep with no dream letting him truely give into fatigue.

He woke with a start, he looked round the room and at his makeshift watch, 10 hours had passed and night had fallen. He had slept enough and decided it was time to move on. He packed up his stuff and headed to the exit.
"Wait... who are you?" Simon turned to see a girl standing in the room he had just been in. She had long white hair that ran all the way down her back apart from a black streak that ran along the right side. She wore a white overcoat with no sleeves that had black spikes up the back. She also wore a single black gem around her neck that looked like it belonged to royalty. The rest of her outfit consisted of a black sleeveless top, white jeans and shoes. Her skin was of a pinkish colour and she had bright blue eyes.
"You... Your Isabella.. aren't you?"
"Been a long time since anyone's called me that... I go by Lumenesence Dawn these days now Who are you?".
Lumen - Some time in the past.
Martin Mertens was a man that had been called many words. Scoundral, Scum, Jerk, Douche and a many more that aren't good for young ears but the one word he waited to be called by the little boy he held in his arms was... Dad. He looked at the blond boy in his arms with the bright blue eyes and smiled. "This little boy right here... he's worth me giving up everything".
Lumen watched the two from afar as he gathered the firewood for the trio and then headed back to him.
"How you doing spaceman?" Lumen asked the doting dad as he threw the freshly cut wood onto the fire.
"I'm feeling great, what about you shooting star?" Martin replied chuckling.
"Well I'm not flying through space and crashing into any other ships so I guess you can say thats an improvement"
"Yeah aha I gotta say I did not expect to see a guy glowing and flying into me as we headed to this world."
"Sorry about your ship though I can't believe i literally sent you crash landing onto this planet" Lumen facepalmed remembering the event that had brought the two together.
"Nahh it's cool ma'boy I'm just gonna go with the flow, to be honest meeting you is the best dang thing thats happened in a long time. After we lost my wife to that damn space storm we haven't had much luck especially with all the prophecies that keep following us as we go..." Martin's face filled with gloom as he looked down as his son.
"Prophecies?"
"Oh yeah! I didn't tell you did I Ivel... you see it first happened on the station i was staying at before i even knew my wife was pregnant. This old creepy lady came up to me and starting spouting some crap like "The son you raise will be the light in the darkness and be the holder of hope and humanity"... I just ignored her but they kept saying it. Different people, different places and then it happened... the prophecy changed. "The mother shall die, The father shall fall and the Son will fight with the darkness". I ignored it again... but then we lost her and I started to think... what if it's true... what if it really is going to happen."
"Martin..."
"Yeah sorry, I guess i'm now talking crazy myself aha maybe i hit my head harder in that crash aha"
"No Martin... you're right... it is going to happen. Finn is destined to fight and like i told you, I'm not from this time I'm actually there beside him... in the future i mean" Lumen had told Martin everything about his past apart from bits excluding Finn and the darkness. He knew that Finn had been abandoned at a young age and that Lumen had caused the pair to crash on Ooo so he was just trying to work out what had caused him to leave Finn behind.
"I see... so if i raise him he will fight this darkness... then I won't raise him! That's it... I'll find someone nice, some great people that can help him become someone great but without having to fight this evil... i don't want that for him... so i guess that's it i'll do whats right and leave him here on this world..."
"Martin... you already did that... Finn didn't meet you until the day he freed you from the Citadel... you committed a cosmic crime and got locked up there. I don't think it means raise like you thought it meant... The darkness will come and Finn the Hero of Ooo will be there to defeat it... you can't change that." Lumen watched as the man started to gather tears in his eyes. He had lost all hope and finally broke... he'd lost his wife, his livelihood, his ship and now he would have to lose his son... because of this 'darkness'.
"Ivel..."
"Yes?"
"What cosmic crime do i commit?"
"I don't know... we never did know but you commit one... what that is I don't know.."
"That's the thing... i think i know what i end up doing..."
"What do you mean? how could you?"
"...the ship.. my ship... it has a power source that can get the ship to go to light speed... in all honesty... it has the power to warp space... if... if i set it to max power and flew in the direction of this darkness... i could... i could create a distortion that would mean that the darkness couldn't travel here right away but i'd have to tear a hole in reality... if i accomplished this i'd be dead so all i can guess is that... i get caught and end up in the citadel."
"That... would make a lot of sense Martin... but what now?"
"Lets go fix my ship... I have a date with the citadel..."
"What? Why would you do it if you know?"
"Because it's meant to happen and it will but think, if i can fail i can learn where i went wrong. I'll spend all my time in the citadel coming up with a plan to fix it, I don't think I would have done what i plan to on purpose without meeting you so i think future me will now be able to accomplish this... and its all thanks to meeting you... now I have to get going... I have a feeling your time is short and we don't have time to waste... I want to devote every second of my life i can to helping my boy so go... i think you know where he needs to go." Martin looked down at his son, he picked up the little bear hat his mother had made for him and put it on before giving him a kiss and passing him to Lumen.
Lumen watched as the father walked away on his path to the citadel. He headed through the woods of Ooo till he reached a tree that seemed different than the others. He placed Finn down and created a bubble around him that would keep him warm and comfortable till he was found. Lumen was sure for some reason this was the place, he figured it must be Finn's memories leaking into him still.
He headed away leaving the boy behind when he ran into a weird blue creature. It looked at Lumen, bowed and then let out a dark cloud that floated over to the prince and went inside him. He looked up to see the creature had vanished. He was going to look around but he found that he was back in the room with Leaden and Flare. The pair had big smiles on their faces and embraced the Prince welcoming him back.
"Lumen, are you ready?"
"Ready?"
"To go back to the people you love"
"I was born ready"
"Good, this will be goodbye Lumen, and i mean it this time... please be safe and do me a favor and pick up a few people on your way back, I'm sure they could use a lift" The elderly shade held Lumen tighter than before as he began to glow and then as mysteriously as he had come back he was gone again. Lumen and Flare looked towards the door that had no label and opened it.
"Shall we go Ivel... I mean shall we go Lumen"
"Lets go back Flare... Lets go back to Ooo". The pair walked into the blinding light and once again disappeared.
Simon and Isabella (Dawn) - Present Day
Isabella looked down at the man who she had stumbled upon, she couldn't believe that there was someone on this world other than her. "Has he always been here?... no i searched everywhere... how is he here? Are there others? Where's the cadaver?" She stared intensely when she felt a power she recognized flow from the man. It was her own power... well sort of... it was the light side of her power the side she wasn't too familiar with but the side that Lumen was particularly favored by. She looked at his neck and noticed a snowflake necklace glowing with Lumen's favor. "...He always use to make stuff for me too..." She found herself thinking before she was interrupted by the strange man.
"Isabella? or do you want me to call you Dawn?" spoke Simon softly. He was eager not to anger the girl but at the same time wanted to approach her.
"...Stick to Izzy... everyone use to call me Izzy"
"Except your brother... he called you Bella right?" Izzy eyes met with Simon's, his white eye's looked deeply into hers and she found that the anger she thought would burst forth just didn't.
"Yeah... he did... he's always been different that boy.. You've read Di i take it since you seem to know so much about me or did Ivel tell you... i bet he did and he laughed his head off imagining his little sister being left behind while he got a new life... or maybe he didn't he was pretending not to know me when i saw him last... how could he do that to-" Izzy was cut off as Simon grabbed her hand.
"It's because he doesn't know you Izzy"
"Doesn't know me? DON'T LIE TO ME! HOW COULD HE NOT KNOW ME? I'M HIS TWIN SISTER!" Izzy yelled furiously, a seed of doubt spreading in her mind further and further.
"I'm not lying to you he really doesn't... Please let me tell you everything I know about Ivel Mertens or Lumen Dusk the Shade Prince... please" Simon kept looking her in the eye and saw her give up.
"Fine..."
Simon began with how Lumen came to be in Ooo, that he was saved from death by being forced to become the prince of a kingdom in a world he never knew. How Lumen accepted this truth as he awoke with no memory other than that he was or used to be a human. He took up being a Prince and his people loved him but that wasn't enough he didn't want to be alone and he wanted to become a worthy Prince to his kingdom. He met the other human in Ooo and then went around fixing the lives of people he stumbled upon and found. He met a girl who he began to like and Simon told her about the various issues Lumen had with meeting her involving two wolf attacks, a flaming sword storm and a cliff in the night. Izzy found herself chuckling to these stories and forgot about the hate she was trying so hard to cling to. Simon told her more about him meeting this girl and that she almost beheaded him thinking he was kidnapping a little robot and about how wherever Lumen went he brought light to everyone's lives. He also told her that they only found out Lumen was from this world a little bit before the trial themselves and that Lumen was shocked to hear any of it. When Simon had finished accounting Lumen's life to the girl silence fell. He watched as she tried to take it all in.
"Is... he really... is it true that he really doesn't know who I am...?" Izzy felt her voice crack as she struggled to hold back her tears... almost 500 years she had been tortured every single day by that monster and every day she remained strong by remembering that the person who had left her in that was her brother and that one day he'd pay but now she had lost even that.
"Yes dear I'm sorry but that's the truth"
"NO! THAT'S NOT FAIR!" Izzy screamed letting her powers rage out of control. Simon watched as a shadow rose in the air and then exploded blowing away the roof that they sat underneath.
"For 500 years i suffered and he got a clean slate... a nice new life where everyone loves him yet he got a new start!? why!? why do i get left behind?"
"Listen Izzy i understa-"
"DON'T YOU DARE! DON'T YOU FLAMING DARE! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT'S LIKE TO GO 500 YEARS OF TORTURE AND INSANITY... LEFT ALL ALONE WITH NO ONE BESIDE YOU!"
"NO I DON'T! I DON'T IZZY! BECAUSE IN MY CASE IT WAS NOT 500 YEARS BUT 1000!" Simon yelled back at the girl who froze not expecting the peaceful old man to fight back against her rage.
"What... What do you mean 1000...?"
Simon told Izzy about the crown he wore on his head, about it's false promises and powers. How it drove away the people he loved as he slowly lost his mind and for 1000 years was lost in torment and madness as his body was controlled by the warped mind in the crown. She stared intensly listening to the story.
"How... how could you go through all that and still be this... good?"
"Your brother Izzy... he saved me with the very same powers you possess..."
"My powers? they can... save people?"
"Yes, with those powers Lumen has saved many lives, cured minds and hearts alike bringing the world he loves together but to tell you the truth... I knew of you from the day he cured me"
"You knew? but you didn't tell him?"
"No... i thought you were dead and didn't want to hurt him... i thought i was doing the right thing and protecting him..."
"You did Simon... after everything you've told me you did... truth be told... I never wanted to kill him... I always wanted him to kill me... I just want to die.."
"Izzy... will you listen to the ramblings of an old man as I recall a poem from my own times?"
"Please do..." Simon held the girl close as he felt her begin to cry, for 500 years she'd been tormented to the point of wanting her flesh and blood to kill her and everything that made that okay was just taken from her... she was empty.
"The shadows of your dreams,
Echo through the day,
As you're surrounded by darkness,
Desperation and decay,
Your light is ever fading,
Almost at it's end,
So face all of hell's wraith,
And the troubles that it sends,
Alone in the world,
Without a single hope,
Watch as your dreams fade.
And all of love and kindness elope,
Abandoned without cause,
And surviving without reason,
The light has now left you,
Committing it's final treason,
Left all alone,
Abandoned by kindness,
No one to turn to,
Only the void and always the darkness."
"Simon..."
"Yes Izzy"
"I don't think I like that poem..."
"It's okay Izzy... it's a 2 parter... the first part is called Nightmare"
"Whats the second part called?"
"Dreams"
"Can you tell me that one?"
"Of course dear"
"Let all your dreams free,
As they brighten up your day,
Watch as they enlighten,
Each and every way,
The forecast has changed now,
The light is here to stay,
Hope has returned now,
It keeps the darkness at bay,
You were alone,
But now you are free,
Feel the embrace of another,
And a new life you will see,
The nightmares are over,
Their hold is no more,
Now face the new day,
And the wonders it has in store,
It's time for you to sleep again,
To let your hopes gleam,
Let all the light in,

"...Simon... that one I like"
"Me too my dear." The two lay in the darkness with the only light being Izzy's hair. Simon watched as the young girl drifted off to sleep and felt himself grow tired again and gave into the fatigue.
"Isabella... one day you will be free of the darkness and when that day comes I'll make sure that your dreams come true". Isabella, who was still awake, let his words sink in and smiled.
Lumen and Flare
Flare began brushing the dirt off of her dress as she picked herself up, somehow she had thought appearing in a new world after going through a magic light would be a lot better than suddenly being thrown from the sky hurtling to the ground. She had only avoided getting injured because Lumen had shouted to her almost instantly after they had appeared that she needed to fly. She looked up as he landed down beside her with a worried look on his face.
"I somehow want to blame Leaden for that..." Flare sighed taking in the scenery of the broken world around her.
"Aha you get use to it after the first few times... trust me I've had worse landings"
"Yes... from all of your stories it does seem like you have a habit of falling" Lumen blushed with embarrassment at her comment really hating the fact he seemed to have a pattern of falling and getting into trouble with wolves.
"Where do you think we are anyway Lumen dear?"
"My best guess is that this is a world that the darkness has already taken... but I have no idea which one"
"Leaden said we have to 'pick someone up' Who do you think he means?". Lumen thought hard about the question trying to wonder who would even live on a world like this.
"Wait!" He looked down at his sun pendant and felt it was warmer than it should be.
"That's it! It's someone from Ooo! Judging by the feel of it... it's either Simon or Simone"
"How can you tell that?"
"Look here" Lumen showed her his necklace again and told her about the ones he had made everyone in preparation of the trials and that they reacted to each other.
"So then this person is here? Can we go find them?"
"Yes here hold my hand lets take a short cut... i don't like it here" Flare grabbed onto Lumen's hand as he made black flames form in the air and twist into a circular portal. The two stepped through it and came out in front of a tower. They looked up at it and noticed that the roof had been blown off and Lumen noted that there was still pieces falling down meaning that the damage was recent.
"HELLO!" Lumen yelled out hoping he would be heard.
"IS ANYONE HERE!?".
Simon woke up from his slumber and looked down at Izzy who was still sleeping. He recognised the voice and came up with an idea.
"Hey... hey Izzy"
"Wha... what is it?"
"Can you do me a favor and change your appearance slightly?"
"What to?"
"As different as you can?" Isabella stood up and breathed deeply her long hair receded back into her head leaving her with short red hair as it changed colour. Her eyes also turned red and her skin turned light blue. The clothes she was wearing changed into a simple pair of jeans and a hoody and she looked at Simon.
"There? that better? Now why the disguise?"
"Well that's the thing Izzy... we're about to meet your brother" Before Isabella even had a chance to think or reply Simon called down to Lumen to come up. Izzy looked at Simon with a slight tinge of fear but he smiled at her hoping to calm her.
"SIMON!" Lumen yelled running up to the Ice Prince hugging him. The two embraced and jumped around over joyed with their reunion.
"Lumen it's been so long!?"
"Simon i can't believe it! What are you doing here?"
"I stayed behind to find out more about this world and Bubba went on back to Ooo after the Trial, it's been 8 months since that happened but I can't work out how to get back. I don't think you've noticed Lumen but this world... it's the world you came from"
"What? What do you mean? The one before Ooo... so wait... this is my home?"
"Yeah..."
"Radical..." Isabella watched on as Lumen began to look around more, tears formed in his eyes as he took in his situation looking at the world he once called home. Simon and Lumen caught up more with Simon telling Lumen about the trial, the Cadaver and them finding Lumen's old home. He apologized for destroying it but Lumen told him not to be silly as he'd rather a old home be destroyed than someone he cared about. Lumen then told Simon about all the things he'd done in the past, apologising time and time again for the Crown but Simon just laughed it off saying at least it now can be seen as the worlds worst present. He continued his story until the end and then decided to introduce Flare.
"So you are Simon of the Ice Kingdom, in my time you are still a madman who often comes to our land just to melt snow for the water nymphs that have been exiled. You aren't good but at the same time I never considered you bad"
"Thank you my dear, that means a great deal to me I'm sorry if I ever caused you any turmoil or grief and that I must say it is wonderful to know you are alive and I can imagine the joy it will bring to Phoebe to see you again"
"I've heard a great deal about how you look after my child and her friends and i thank you Simon for being around when I couldn't be... thank you" The two royalty of opposing elements continued their greeting each beginning to like and trust the other. The whole time Lumen had a puzzled look on his face and hadn't noticed Izzy standing behind Simon. She watched him equally puzzled at how he behaved.
"Simon" Lumen said suddenly cutting all conversation off.
"Yes Lumen?"
"If this is my old world... will Dawn be here?" Izzy shifted uncomfortably and Simon frowned slightly.
"Yes why?"
"Do you reckon you could help me find her? I need to talk to her?"
"What do you intend to say?"
"...I'm sorry... I want her to know how sorry I am... I don't know what I've done to her but for her to want to hurt me so much I can only believe I wronged her greatly.. I want to offer her my sincere apology and try to find a way to make it up to her... I can imagine why my own sister would want to kill me but... i just don't know what to do" Lumen sat down and ran his hands through his hair. He was clearly stressed and upset. Simon and Flare went to go to comfort him but found someone had got their first.
"Ivel... Lumen..." Lumen looked up to the girl with the red hair and blue skin.
"My names Bella and I'm a friend of Dawn's... you did nothing wrong believe me, she has just had to listen to the Darkness' lies for so long she came to believe them... she doesn't want to kill you... she needs you to kill her and set her free... when the time comes that you see her again... that is what she wants of you... you are her treasured older brother and I'm sure she loves you more than you know... okay?" Izzy ran her hand through Lumen's hair and pulled him into a hug. He didn't know what to say to respond to the strangers kindness but he hugged her back and felt so much better for it. Simon smiled at the pair but felt bitter knowing this happiness was only brought with lies.
"Thank you... Bella... but I don't think I'll be able to kill her.."
"Why? Why not?"
"Because I want nothing more than to save her from herself..."
"Save her? Why? She nearly killed you and all your friends" Simon looked up quickly he had not known this and suddenly questioned the type of person Izzy was.
"She didn't want to... if she had really wanted to they would all have been dead by the time i got there... she held back on everyone until Hope arrived... but I want to find her and save her... if she'll let me"
"I'm sure nothing would make her happier Lumen" Izzy smiled at him again and it honestly reassured him although he did not know why the words of this girl seemed to have that affect on him.
"Thanks again" Lumen turned to face Simon again. "This Cadaver you spoke about? Where is it?"
"Well judging from my watch and how its acted till now... it'll be here in... 10 minuted time"
"WHAT!" Everyone else shouted out.
"Well yeah, I did trap it a while ago but a good deal of time has passed since then and as i can guess since there's more of us now it definitely knows where we are and wants to find us so yeah."
"Hmm" Lumen scrunched up his face trying to think of a plan and put the pieces together when it occurred to him.
"Simon.. no one can die on this world right?"
"Yeah"
"So when Dawn comes back she'll have to deal with that beast... and what it does to her?"
"Yes i guess that's true"
"...How about... we take it back with us to Ooo." After Lumen's statement everyone fell silent. Flare quickly put together Lumen's logic and agreed with the idea but decided to let him try to convey it himself. Simon took a few seconds to recover from the shock of the suggestion trying to understand what the shade human was thinking but he too soon grasped it. However, Izzy was not use to actually spending time with others and failed to understand the idea her brother had proposed.
"ARE YOU INSANE?!" She screamed at the Prince.
"How can you even consider unleashing it on your own world? Do you not care for the people there at all? Do you not care for the people you love?" Her voice shook as she held onto Lumen's shoulders staring him dead in the eyes. Lumen looked her back staring at her now red eyes and to her disbelief smiled.
"Bella, you're right that I would be unleashing an evil on my world and the people i love, one of those very people have red eyes just like yours and my daughter seems to have one like yours too but the people i love are strong and brave and this creature is nothing compared to them or me but on this world it is stronger than us. If i can take it away then I can help Dawn at least be able to feel a little safer... it's not much but its a step in the right direction" Lumen smiled at the girl as the true weight of his words fell on her. "He's doing it... For me?"
"Ermm Lumen?" Simon spoke up suddenly.
"Yeah Si?"
"Since when did you have a daughter?"
Lumen's face lit up with a big smile as he remembered the brief but interesting encounter that he had with his future daughter.
"You see just before i lost consciousness after meeting Dawn I had a chance to be saved by a little girl named Hope Leaden Dusk, she said she was mine and Marceline's daughter from the future and I don't doubt it for a second. I don't really know how it's possible but I want to find out which is why I wanna get back and meet her. I also remember seeing a boy who resembled you Simon."
"Wait what? You mean... I might have a son too?"
"Yes that's what I'm saying" Simon's legs started to shake at the news and Flare stood beside him and held him up. A smile spread across his cheeks and tears fell from his eyes. Lumen gave him a hug and the two men stood proudly fully embracing the idea of being parents. Flare could understand how they felt, not only was she going to meet her daughter all grown up but she may meet her grandchildren as well.
Izzy watched the scene unfold remembering the little girl who had caused her so much difficulty and could barely begin to imagine that the very same girl was her niece; a strange mixture of guilt and pride filled her. She watched Simon closely studying his features and his smile. "1000 years... twice my pain and now he has a whole new and loving world ahead of him... maybe... maybe i could too". Izzy instantly began to regret the prospect of hope as the ground around her began to shake. The happy moment the group were sharing stopped in an instant. Izzy looked up at Simon and noticed a new light in his eyes... a stronger and more determined one. She looked at her brother and saw him ready to fight... to fight for her sake.
"Simon"
"Yes Lumen"
"Let's get home and protect our family... all of our family"
"Yes... Let's make a bridge for your daughter to meet her aunt". Izzy looked up at Simon as he shot her a smile and a wink. Flare noticed the transaction and smiled once again realising what was happening.
"TIME TO DIE WEAK"
Author Note:
The arrival of the Cadaver signals the end of this chapter and the start of the return to Ooo, Next time when we'll see the gang they will be returning to Ooo, a good few surprises and reunions and more... like what will Isabella do? will she go with them as Bella or take up the mantel of Dawn.
