Chapter 114
Digital Girl trapped in a Material World
It was another beautiful day in Oceanus. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping about in their nests…
And someone's attempt at a digimon was wreaking havoc on this beautiful coastal city. Today's monster was a weird cross between a sea serpent and a leomon. Science may know no bounds, but morals were not in steady supply these days.
For Angela, this was another day on the job. Long as she could fight, nothing else really mattered. Didn't matter who it was or what it was. Though, she would've preferred for her opponents to come to her rather than the other way around. Standing out on the beach, this was sadly not one of those occasions. It almost never was. Especially after Angela took the place of her predecessor. What would 'she' think of this? Would all the work done by the civilian be up to the standards set? Yes, she sometimes got her ass kicked or forgot the basic social cues of conversation. But when you're one purpose in life is beating your way through horrible digimon mashups, you're not expected to be great at everything. Long as you get the job done, things will work out. Hopefully.
Shaking those thoughts out of her head, Angela let her gaze return to this monster. The one and only constant in this stupid town. If you didn't count the smell of cotton candy or the various other carnival foods on offer at all times of the year. Even if the market for the most of that foodstuff was nearly nonexistent.
"Armor, activate!" she announced, feeling her body get engulfed in light. The t-shirt with the gatomon on it was a loss, but the pants could be salvaged at a later date. Especially with the way that her lower half was covered. At least her hair was no longer sliced off mid-transformation. "Ophanimon!"
A helmet formed above her head and slid its way down, rendering her vision absolutely useless. Reaching out, the weight of her javelin meeting the hands followed. The full plate and gauntlets came next. Why those particular parts of her armor came after her weapon was a mystery that Angela didn't care enough to solve. Especially as her body was stretched out to better accommodate the suit. Not really necessary when everything you fight is the same size as a regular person. An oddly specific design choice. In her head, she would send monsters that were larger than her. That way, she would actually have something to worry about
"Sea monster, I am here to help." Angela announced, the sea leomon serpent heading right towards her. Why did she even try to solve this in the first place? Never did the monster ever actually want to talk to her. Even when they did, the conversation that followed was usually a declaration of love or the want to see her dead. Sometimes both. Monsters were weird that way. Or perhaps that was the result of the scientists that created. ted these frankenstein digimon. "Eden Javelin."
The javelin glowed red, heating up quite fast. Not fast enough for Angela to throw it towards her opponent. While unable to see the trajectory of the weapon, she could hear the sound of flames bursting forth. Whether or not it was actually a direct hit remained to be seen. That would be signaled by a cry of pain or a grunt. Thank fuck that this helmet augmented her hearing or this would be a nightmare to fight these monsters. At least she had that going for her.
"Sephirot Crystal."
Crystals sprouted forth from the ground, creating a circle around her. While her javelin hadn't returned yet, it was the least of her worries currently. Especially with the way crystals worked in the first place. The sound of crystals shattering echoed about her head, each one refusing to give anything in the way of silence. Or at least, all sound off at once. That would be a fair trade-off. But no, she was asking for too much.
"Come closer, you coward." her opponent screeched and launched off all sorts of projectiles in return. Not that any could be seen Angela. "Why the hell aren't you respo-"
If the helmet had a way of doing so, the armored civilian would roll her eyes. The monster probably wouldn't even get that. Thankfully, her javelin had finally made its way back on over. But when she reached out for the weapon, she found herself touching another hand. Not quite armored like hers, but… familiar. There was no way this could be happening. She had to be dreaming right now. No, Angela could clearly remember waking up in her bed and getting ready to start her day. So she let her mind shift to other possibilities. But try as the civilian might to come to a satisfying conclusion, all that got her was right back to where she started. Absolutely infuriating.
"Armor, deactivate."
Light engulfed Angela, the remains of her clothes appearing in place of her battle armor. For once, both articles of clothing remained intact. A happy accident, especially with the large body of her opponent in the background.
"Angewomon, what the hell are you doing?" a voice screeched and the hands shook her about. She wasn't entirely sure what was going on here. Shifting her gaze about, she found the person in question. A brunette even with all that blonde dye, they were dressed in the armor of an angewomon of all things. Which was stretching the 'term' armor in the first place.
"Maddie?" Angela remarked and pulled her partner's hand off of her's. That didn't last long, Maddie's hand already back there. Tighter too. "What are you doing here? I thought you disappeared after that portal appeared…"
Maddie took a deep breath.
"You were supposed to be the one who disappeared." she answered, getting faced down with a confused look. Of course this was going to be one of those days. Taking a deep breath, she pulled her partner in. "But no, you had to leave my stupid body behind and jump through the portal."
Maddie's words rolled out, Angela pushing away at the last moment. Bolting off, she looked for a place to hide. That couldn't be that hard to find… right? But try as she might to squeeze her way into alleyways and into dark corners, Maddie was always one step behind. Absolutely annoying. She was clearly the digimon. Why did she claim otherwise? What use was there in showing back up after all these years? Yes, Maddie was still her digimon partner - the very reason that this armor was created in the first place.
"Found you."
A foot slammed into Angela's stomach, knocking her to the ground. Staring up to the sky, her gaze met Maddie's. She had never seen her partner quite like this. Yes, there were times when anger was shown. But this was on a whole different level.
"Do you know how much shit your friends gave me when I showed up?! They tried to make me one of them. Were absolutely convinced that I had to be an angewomon." Maddie barked, the heel of her boot grinding deeper into her partner. "But I didn't give them what they wanted. So, I'm going to take what's mine."
Angela rolled her eyes and kicked back. While her foot connected with Maddie's back, it wasn't enough to knock her off. Probably made it harder to actually free herself from this fiendish trap. The exact opposite of what she wanted currently.
"Maddie…" she whispered and kicked one more time. This had to be a mistake. There was no way that this reunion could go this disastrous. She had to turn this around, right? "Armor, activate."
Once more, light engulfed Angela's body. But unlike the previous time, her body shook about and Maddie's foot refused to budge. That should've worked here. Why hadn't it? What was the missi-
.
Angela's eyes shot open.
Gone was the seaside coast of Oceanus, replaced by the snug but a bit claustrophobic room of a child. The walls had been painted a bright shade of light blue, with the floor getting an oversized version of those childish street maps. Perfect for those times that you want to play with cars and the real ones are all off limit for one reason or another. Even if the number of times she's tripped on one of these toy vehicles and taken a forced nap on the floor were too many to count. As was the case of today. Dusting herself off, Angela's attention shifted to the bed. Currently empty, the sheets look to have been pulled forward. Someone had to be in a good mood for once. The reasons why escape her at this moment.
What's more of note is the white leotard with gold ornamentation and the metal helmet at her feet. She didn't remember getting this stuff out. At all. Much of an effort made to sleep while clothed, just staring at this stupid garment felt wrong. This had once been her usual outfit. Now, she couldn't even remember the last time this stupid thing had adorned her body.
"Something wrong, Angela?"
Looking at the door frame, the angelic digimon's gaze was met by that of a boy. Quite a bit shorter and younger than Maddie, he was definitely a lot sweeter than she was in her dreams. Or perhaps ever.
"Nothing, dear." Angela answered and looked back down to the leotard. "Did you get this out for me?"
The boy nodded.
"I thought big sis would like it if you dressed like that, since that's how she last saw you." the boy answered and watched his friend take a deep breath. Giving one last look to the clothes on the ground, she made her way over.
"I think Maddie would like it better this way." Angela answered and reached down for the boy's hand. With that, they headed off.
Notes:
Just for the sake of changing things up and giving me a 'break', AWC will be my main focus instead of Digital Dungeons at the time of writing. I don't think people will really mind.
