Half an hour later, Kayla had left Skye down at the Cargo Bay who was insisting she wouldn't leave until Simmons had found an anti-serum. She was currently walking to the kitchen to get Skye some food when she noticed Ward in the control room, watching the CCTV link of the lab.

"Why aren't you down there?" Kayla inquired, stepping into the room.

"They don't need an audience" Ward replied.

"So first mission and one of the team is dying…" Kayla trailed off, sitting on the desk.

"It happens from time to time" Ward told her.

"You sure I'm not just bad luck? Because people have a way of dying around me" Kayla explained.

"It's not your fault" Ward exclaimed.

"Then whose fault is it?" Kayla asked.

"Mine. If it was a person, some super powered psychopath...someone I could hurt, someone I could... punish. That I could deal with. What I can't do is protect you guys from stuff I can't even see...or understand" Ward sighed.

"You can't protect us all the time" Kayla exclaimed.

"Well I should be able to" Ward insisted.

"You're putting too much weight on your shoulders" Kayla suggested, as Ward gave her a look.

"Well none of this matters anyway, because Jemma is going to figure out the anti-serum and everything will turn out alright" Kayla told him.

"How can you be so sure?" Ward asked.

"Because I believe in her. Now come on, I'm getting Skye some food and you're coming with me" Kayla said, jumping off the desk.

"I'm not hungry" He told her.

"Even Special Agents like yourself need food" Kayla grinned, dragging him out of the room.

It wasn't much later when they spotted Fitz running down the stairs with the alien helmet that had given people the viruses. They quickly followed him as he explained that they were trying to get the antibodies from the alien because it was the only thing that had survived the virus. The whole team waited in the Cargo Bay while the two scientists worked. Kayla sat down by the lab, resting her head on the glass while she watched as Ward paced around the room. They watched on with baited breath as Fitz gave one of the rats an electric shock with the anti-serum in it, and waited to see if it would live. Just when they thought they had found a cure, suddenly there was a burst of blew energy. The anti-serum had failed.

"Sir, I know the protocol in these circumstances, but could you please tell my dad first? I just think my Mum would take it better if it comes from him" Simmons explained.

"We're not there yet. There's still time" Coulson insisted.

"Sir, please. Would you mind if I had a brief moment alone with Fitz?" Simmons asked.

The team started slowly walking up the stairs, as Kayla held onto Skye and helped the crying girl up the stairs.

"Agent Blake is on the line. He wants to know what's going on. If you won't answer, he asked for Ward" May explained to Coulson, once they got to the control room.

"Sir... what are our orders?" Ward questioned.

"They're unchanged" Coulson replied, as an alert started to sound.

"What is that?" Skye asked.

"Someone's lowering the cargo-hold ramp" May told them.

Ward quickly ran out of the room, with Kayla not far behind him as they rushed downstairs.

"The anti-serum worked! But she jumped!" Fitz shouted at them, as Ward grabbed the parachute and anti-serum off of him and jumped off the plane himself.

"Ward!" Kayla shouted, as she ran towards the end of ramp, holding onto the edge as she watched him fall.

"Oh my God…" Fitz trailed off.

"He'll be fine, right? Fitz?" Kayla insisted.

"Yeah…he's Ward, he'll save her" Fitz exclaimed.

It was over ten minutes later and everyone was sitting in the control room, praying for some contact telling them that Ward and Jemma were alright.

"Sir?" A crackling voice came in over the inter-com.

"Ward, what's happened? Are you and Simmons alright?" Coulson asked.

"Yes, we're both fine…but we're going to need some help. And a boat" Ward explained, as Coulson sighed.

Once they had both arrived back on the Bus they had been sent straight to Coulson's office. Skye and Kayla waited downstairs, and soon the pair ventured down the stairs.

"Oh, hello guys" Jemma smiled, as Skye ran at her, pulling her into what looked like an extremely tight hug.

"Hey, leave some of her for me!" Kayla exclaimed, as she joined in on the hugging, pulling the two girls close to her.

"I'm so glad you're alright Jemma" Skye told her.

"So am I" Simmons replied.

"Don't ever do something like that again alright? Jesus, you gave us all a heart attack!" Kayla exclaimed.

"I better go see Fitz, he's probably worried" Simmons explained, as she walked towards the bunks with Skye following her.

"Well if the impact of jumping into the sea didn't hurt her, you two attack hugging her certainly will have" Ward stated.

"Aw, does someone want a hug to? Come here" Kayla grinned, as she went onto her tiptoes and pulled Ward down into a hug.

He didn't respond much for the first few seconds, but slowly he slipped his hands down onto the small of her back and hugged her back. When Kayla pulled away, she noticed he had a strange look on his face.

"What?" She asked.

"It's just…I can't remember the last time someone hugged me" Ward admitted, rubbing his neck, obviously embarrassed.

"Well heroes get all the attention" Kayla smiled, as she once again went onto her tiptoes and lightly kissed him on the cheek before turning away with a smirk, noticing the redness on his cheeks.
