Later Coulson informed the group that he expected that the Professor was an Asgardian and ordered Ward to try to stab the man, who quickly bent the knife.

"Thank God he wasn't human" Skye mumbled.

"Yeah, or things would have just got real messy" Kayla exclaimed, getting strange looks from Skye and FitzSimmons.

"I had no clue, did you? Hidden in plain sight, an actual Asgardian. Brilliant" Fitz questioned in amazement.

"How long do you suppose he's been on our planet?" Skye asked.

"A thousand years. Maybe more. If we could just cut him open a little bit, get some tissue samples, maybe some bodily fluids, we could find out" Simmons exclaimed.

"Or we could just ask him, weirdo" Skye retorted.

"Yeah, I don't want to find anymore dead organs in the lab" Fitz insisted.

"I second that" Kayla added.

"This is way, way better than the History channel. I mean, this guy has lived through all the scary stuff ... the crusades, the black death, disco" Skye explained, making Kayla laugh.

The Professor told them what the staff does and only said it 'shined at light into your dark places'.

"Shines a light? That's no explanation" Simmons exclaimed.

"How long do you think he'll be effected by it?" Kayla questioned.

"Who knows? Could be days or maybe even years" Fitz replied.

"God, poor Ward" Kayla sighed.

"Are you sure Ward is okay to go out into the field? He's not exactly acting like himself" Skye explained.

"But he knows it. He'll be fine" Coulson insisted.

"I'm with Coulson" May added.

"You?" Skye asked Kayla

"I'm with you on this. I mean, he could hurt himself!" Kayla exclaimed.

"…Or hurt someone else" Skye suggested.

"Well, it's been a while. I wonder...Ah, yes. There it is. Still here. Well, the nose isn't quite right, but ..." The Professor trailed off as they entered the monastery and found a book.

"That's you?" Fitz questioned, pointing to the man in the book.

"Yeah. They venerated me a bit as a saint" The Professor said smugly.

"They're idiots. Where's the staff?" Ward said, impatiently.

"It's upstairs" The Professor replied, as he started to walk up the stairs, followed by the team.

"Is that the normal Ward or the new, angrier Ward? I can't tell" Skye announced.

"Cut him some slack, he's under a lot of stress" Kayla insisted.

"Why do you keep defending him?" Skye asked.

"Well it can't be great to have all you locked down memories washed back up can it?" Kayla said, raising an eyebrow, knowing that Skye knew about that.

"It's quiet" May stated.

"Why do you think I trusted them with my secret? They take a vow of silence" The Professor explained.

"But when you get them talking... they squeal" A man announced, as he stepped forward and stabbed the professor with the staff.

"If you want to defeat a god, you must become one" The man exclaimed.

Ward quickly dropped to the ground, touching the staff and let out a shout, as he pushed the over man of the stairs.

They both hit the ground with a thump, but the other man got up quicker and through Ward to the ground.

"We need to help him!" Kayla insisted, as she ran down the stairs.

"I'll get her" May sighed, as she followed.

Ward managed to get the upper hand however, and then through the man into a door.

"Grant, drop the staff" Kayla told him, his head lifting up when he heard his first name.

"Stay away from me" Ward insisted.

"Agent Ward!" May exclaimed, not far behind Kayla.

"This isn't you" Kayla told him.

"Get back" Ward warned, as May pushed Kayla into a corner.

Ward then beat the other men to the floor, one by one. After the last man fell, Ward too fell to the floor, obviously exhausted.

"Oh my God, are you okay?" Kayla exclaimed, as she ran over to him.

"Come here" She said, putting his arm on her shoulder for support.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding" Kayla sighed as more men came into the room.

Ward tried to stand up, his legs shaking, but before he could touch the staff, May stopped him.

"This time, let me help" May explained.

"Come on" Kayla said, as she once again put his arm over her shoulder, and lead him to the edge of the room.

She soon found a chair for him to sit on, and started looking him over for injuries.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Kayla asked, obviously worried.

"Yeah, I'm fine" Ward insisted, as he watched May take on the rest of the men.

Soon she had taken them all out and dropped the staff, giving them a nod.

That night they had decided to stay in a hotel for once, and Kayla was enjoying it immensely. She had gone down to the bar, thinking of getting a drink, because unlike lots of the states in America it was actually legal here for her to get a drink. She stopped when she saw Ward at the bar, staring into space.

"Hey" She murmured, as she sat beside him.

"I could get used to turndown service and little mints on my pillow" Kayla exclaimed.

"Overnights aren't standard" Ward replied, as he took another sip of his drink.

"Just trying to reap the benefits while I can. My first hotel experience isn't actually as bad as I thought it would be" She admitted.

"This is your first time staying in a hotel? You've been on the run for years, where did you live?" Ward questioned.

"You really don't want to know" Kayla replied.

"So, how are you doing?" Kayla questioned.

"Not great" He sighed.

"I'm sorry…about before. I'm…I'm not that guy" Ward said, after a moment.

"You're a guy who saves lives I can look over a little hulk rage" Kayla exclaimed.

"Does everything just roll of your back?" Ward asked.

"Nope, just things that don't matter" Kayla told him.

"What would make you mad, then?" Ward inquired.

"Lies. I hate when people lie" Kayla explained.

"Understandable" Ward replied.

"…What I saw…it was about my brother" Ward admitted.

Ward had explained to her in very basic terms that his brother really was not a nice guy, and that he had hurt Ward and his younger brother when they were younger, a few weeks ago.

"I figured…Brothers suck" Kayla murmured.

"How would you know?...I…I didn't mean it like that, sorry" Ward stuttered.

"Can I tell you a secret?" Kayla asked.

"Sure" Ward replied.

"You know how my family sent someone after me when I started digging too much?" Kayla questioned.

"Yeah?" Ward stated.

"It was my brother" Kayla admitted.

"He was the one shooting at you?" Ward asked.

"Yep. Told me if I didn't stop digging he'd kill me. Then he shot me, just for effect" Kayla explained.

"He actually shot you?" Ward inquired, appalled.

"Yeah. First time I realized I could heal" She exclaimed.

"Your life is even more screwed up than mine. That's a real achievement" Ward stated.

"Wow, was that a joke? God, you must be feeling bad" Kayla laughed.

"You're right, I'm beat" Ward announced, standing up.

"Don't worry Kayla, your secret is safe with me" Ward told her, putting a hand on his shoulder.

"I know" She said, looking up at him.

He caught her eyes for a few seconds before looking away and walking up the stairs back to his apartment. He hadn't missed the way his heart fluttered for just a second when she looked at him and mentally scolded himself. He couldn't get attached. Shaking his head, he opened the door to his room. Across the hallway he heard someone else open the door, and saw May give him a long stare before leaving her door open as an invitation. Deciding he needed to get Kayla out of his head, he slowly followed.
