"I'm here. That's unacceptable. I need to speak to Director Fury immediately, please" Coulson said, on the phone to someone.
They were still waiting on news about Skye, and were getting more and more anxious.
"Why didn't I stop them? I could have" Fitz sighed.
"As if you could stop Skye and Kayla doing anything they set her mind to" Simmons stated.
"I shouldn't have let them go after Quinn by themselves. What was I thinking?" Fitz cried, clearing upset.
"It's not your fault. They shouldn't have been there. I'm Kayla's S.O. It's on me" Ward stated, as he looked at Coulson, who was clearly the one he blamed.
"The one to blame is the man who shot them, Ian Quinn. He's responsible" May insisted.
"Yes, the message is, I have an agent dying, and there are questions only he can answer" Coulson explained on the phone.
"Have you got a location on Kayla's bracelet?" Ward questioned Simmons.
"No, they seem to be blocking it" Simmons replied.
"Well how much longer will it take?" Ward inquired.
"I don't know…if Skye was here she'd be able to do it in a matter of minutes…" Simmons trailed off.
"How is she?" Coulson asked, as a doctor walked into the room.
"Not good. The shots perforated her stomach and penetrated the large and small intestines. We resected what we could, but...there's been too much damage" The doctor announced.
"So what's next?" Coulson asked.
"We can keep her comfortable, but you'll need to make a decision on whether or not you want to keep her on life support" The doctor told them.
"You're saying there's nothing to be done?" Coulson exclaimed.
"I'm saying you need to call her family and get them here as soon as possible" The doctor explained.
"We're her family" Coulson replied.
"In that case, I'm very sorry" The doctor said, then left the room.
While Skye was getting transported onto the Bus, Simmons finally got a location and quickly told the others.
"She's in America! Not far from where she was shot" Simmons announced.
"Let me see" Ward stated, looking at the location.
"I can get there in 8 hours" Ward exclaimed.
"No, you'll be needed on this mission to save Skye" Coulson insisted.
"Not going to happen, Sir" Ward retorted, walking off to call HQ for an extra plane.
"Agent Ward, come back-" Coulson was quickly cut off by May.
"We can handle this on our own" May told him.
"I hope you're right" Coulson sighed.
Half an hour later, Ward had his supplies packed and started to walk down the cargo hold to his smaller plane.
"Ward!" He heard FitzSimmons call after him.
"We should be able to save Skye before you get to America, so we'll try to get their as quickly as possible to give you a getaway" Simmons explained.
"Thanks" Ward said, with a small smile.
"Bring her back" Fitz told him.
"You know I will" Ward exclaimed, as he walked away towards his plane.
For the next few hours, FitzSimmons informed him what was happening and by the time he reached American soil they were about to go into the place where Coulson's life had been saved.
"Good luck" Ward stated.
"You too" FitzSimmons sighed, cutting the line.
Inside the base where Kayla was been held, the pain in her arm had only got worse. The only movement she could make was a twitch in her fingers, but even that sent pain throughout her body. They had also started to experiment on her leg, just not as severely. The man from before came back after a while, seemingly to check on how fast she was healing.
"You know I've got to say I'm impressed, most agents would be showing a lot more pain than you are right now" He announced, but got no reply from Kayla.
He then reached for her arm and turned it sideways, making her scream out in pain.
"Not healing as fast as expected though" He admitted.
"Oh, I'm so sorry" Kayla said sarcastically.
"Don't worry, you'll be going under in a minute, so the pain will stop for a while" He explained.
"What are you talking about?" Kayla asked.
"The scientists here thought it would be quite interesting to see what makes you tick, so they're going to open you up" He told her.
He then wheeled in a hospital bed, and started to uncuff her. Panicking, Kayla looked around the room trying to find anything she could use as a weapon. She spotted the hammer that was used earlier in the corner of the room, and tried to use her telekinesis to move it towards her. The hand that was still cuffed couldn't move it what so ever, and her broken arm was too weak to move such a heavy object. The man then started to walk towards her with a large needle, and she knew if she didn't get out now, it would be too late. Using all her strength, she managed to curl her fingers slightly, trying to pull on anything in the room. She was surprised when she felt the familiar tug when she latched onto something. Curling her fingers more, she looked around the room trying to spot what she moving, when she noticed that the man in front of her had stopped. She could hear him audibly gulp, as he placed the needle on a nearby chair. Making her hand into a fist, he let out a small groan.
"W-what are you doing?" He said, putting his hand to his head.
Clenching her hand as hard as she could, the man quickly fell to the floor with a cry.
"Stop it, ah!" He cried, as he took his hands away from his face.
She let out a gasp when she saw that he was now bleeding from his eyes and ears. She had no idea what she was doing, but at least it seemed to be working.
"No, no, stop, please!" He shouted, as he put his hand to his chest.
With one final shake of her hand, he suddenly stopped moving and fell to the floor, blood covering his face. Looking away, Kayla saw he had freed her cuffed hand from the chair, as it dangled on her wrist. She quickly untied her legs and went to stand up, only to fall to the floor, her leg not being able to support her. Her head was pounding, and her arm was even more painful than earlier. Slowly, she stood up again and fell towards the door and clumsily opened it. She had been laying her weight against the door, so when it opened she felt herself fall again. This time however, she didn't reach the ground.
"Kayla?" A voice questioned.
She looked up to see Ward staring at her, worry covering his face. Not knowing what to say, she simply let her head fall against his chest, feeling all her energy evaporate. Quickly, Ward picked her up bridal style, careful not to touch her injured arm.
"What happened?" He asked her, as she shook her head.
He looked back in the room she had come from, his eyes widening when he saw the body on the fall, his face covered in blood.
"Let's get you out of here" Ward exclaimed, as he quickly ran the way he came.
He had managed to blow a hole in a nearby wall and that was how he had been able to get in. He had been met by a large force of men, who now lay unconscious on the floor and before going to find Kayla he had cut off all exits so they could make a clean getaway.
"Damn, you took a lot of guys down" Kayla stated, as they walked past the piles of bodies, Ward grunted in reply.
"Fitz, we're ready" Ward said into his comms, as the Bus flew down beside them.
Simmons quickly wheeled her into a medical pod they had got earlier and got to work. It was a while later before she came out again, blood on her hands.
"Will she be alright?" Ward inquired, immediately.
"Yes, but she will need quite a while to heal. The bullets to her chest have started to heal nicely as expected, while her…head wound has healed on the outside, the tissue inside is still healing. Her leg is broken, but it should start to heal soon. My biggest worry is her arm" Simmons explained.
"What's wrong with it?" Ward questioned.
"It's one of the worst breaks I've ever heard of. Every bone in her left arm has shattered, if this was a normal person I would expect their arm to never heal, but seeing as it's Kayla I expect this to not be the case. However, I feel that her arm may never completely heal" Simmons told him.
"But she'll live? She'll be okay?" Ward insisted.
"Yes, she's lucky you were there to save her" Simmons smiled.
"…That's not quite what happened" Ward admitted.
