"How're you feeling today?" Ward asked, knocking on her door.
It was later that week and things were finally starting to get back to normal.
"Fine, as I keep telling everyone. I don't need you guys coddling me you know" Kayla sighed, crossing her arms.
"Someone's pouty this morning" Ward laughed.
"I haven't moved from this bed in days, I'm bored!" Kayla exclaimed.
"You may be bored, but at least you're alive" Ward said, patting her on her leg, before he sat down beside her.
"I guess…how Skye's doing?" Kayla inquired.
"She's doing fine, just like she was an hour ago" Ward said, raising an eyebrow.
"I'm just worried about her, she doesn't have all this freaky healing stuff like I do" Kayla explained.
"Well all this 'freaky healing stuff' doesn't make you invincible" Ward told her.
"I told you I'm fine" Kayla insisted.
"Are you sure? Because you still look ill" Ward exclaimed.
"Rude!" Kayla stated.
"No, I mean you look fine…great even, but you just still look kind of, a little unwell" Ward suggested.
"Yeah well if Simmons allowed me to put some make up, I would look better" Kayla pouted.
"Nah, you don't need all that stuff" Ward insisted.
"Wow, you must be the first guy to tell me that" Kayla scoffed.
"What?" Ward asked.
"It's the paleness. Ever since I was like 10, everyone always been telling me to wear a load of makeup. Even Skye wants me to get a fake tan" Kayla sighed.
"Well I think you look great. Screw what everyone else thinks" Ward told her, making Kayla blush lightly.
"Thanks" She replied.
"How's the patient doing today?" Simmons questioned, entering the room and making them both jump.
"Uh, much better" Kayla smiled.
"Good, look we've even got a bit of color in your cheeks" Simmons grinned, making Ward frown.
"Her cheeks were fine beforehand" Ward retorted, making Kayla laugh.
"Okay…" Simmons trailed off, confused at the comment, as Ward walked out the room.
"What was that about?" Simmons inquired.
"Just Ward being his dorky little self" Kayla smiled to herself.
The same day they had picked up some readings that an Asgardian had come to earth and found it to be Lady Sif, who's help they quickly enlisted. She was hunting down a woman called Lorelei who could control men with her voice and touch. The team soon found out where she was and went after her, leaving Skye and Kayla behind because they were still too weak to fight.
"Can't believe we're missing all the action" Kayla grumbled.
"Well at least you can actually move around a bit, I'm still bed bound" Skye retorted.
"Do you think they'll be alright?" Kayla asked.
"What do you mean?" Skye inquired.
"These guys are pretty slippery…I'm just worried" Kayla pouted.
"They'll be fine. C'mon Ward and May can take on anything" Skye insisted.
"Yeah, I guess" Kayla sighed.
"So...what's going on between you and Ward at the moment?" Skye questioned.
"What do you mean?" Kayla shrugged.
"Oh c'mon, I see the way you look at him and he pretty much didn't leave your side at all when you were hurt" Skye said, nudging her.
"Maybe you're reading into things too much" Kayla stated.
"And maybe you're in denial" Skye exclaimed, raising an eyebrow.
"Guys, we've got some bad news" FitzSimmons announced suddenly, walking into the room.
"What?" Skye asked.
"Um…Ward's sort of been taken over by Lorelei and they've gone missing" Fitz mumbled.
"What?!" Kayla questioned.
"So, Ward's what? Like, a pod person?" Skye inquired, when Coulson briefed them.
Ward had found Lorelei but before he could take her in, she had touched him, bending his will.
"No, according to Lady Sif, the men Lorelei controls don't forget who they are or what they know. She just becomes the embodiment of all their desires" Coulson explained.
"So once we find them, we can break her mojo or whatever and get Ward back, right?" Skye asked.
"Yes, once the collar's back on Lorelei's neck, the enchantment ends, but that's the problem. The collar caught a shotgun blast back in the desert. You think you can fix it?" Coulson asked Fitz.
"Well...the metal, the weight...it's similar to the Berserker staff. But it presents its own set of countless unknown variables" Fitz exclaimed.
"Got a couple of hours" Coulson told him.
"Yeah" Fitz grunted, walking out the room.
"What can I do? And don't you dare say nothing or tell me to sit down here and count ceiling tiles while Ward is missing" Kayla advised.
"Ward's got drop boxes and storage lockers all over the world. They're filled with currency, weapons, I.D.s. He's gonna use aliases, cash...anything to keep Lorelei off the radar. You and Skye are the best radar we have. Find them" Coulson announced.
"It's okay Kayla, we'll find him" Skye insisted.
"Yeah, but in what state?" Kayla sighed, obviously worried.
An hour later, they picked up some CCTV footage of Ward and Lorelei in Las Vegas and quickly told the rest of the team, who flew there immediately. They soon tracked down the apartment that they were staying in, but by the time they got there they had already left. There were camera's on the soldiers who were checking the apartment, which had a live feedback to Skye and Kayla. When one of the soldiers was scanning the room, Kayla spotted the bed, which had certainly been more than just slept in. Skye didn't miss the way Kayla's jaw tightened, and put her hand on her leg, trying to console her.
"It'll be fine. Everything will work out" Skye told her, as Kayla simply nodded.
Kayla had decided to go back to her temporary pod, and get some rest while the team came back to the bus. It wasn't much later when she heard a strange sound outside her door. Slowly standing up, she walked over to her door and tried to open it, frowning when she found it was stuck.
"What the hell?" She questioned.
She peered down and saw a metal pipe had been lodged in the door, preventing it from being opened. She raised her hand and tried to use her telekinesis on it and after a few failed attempts she managed to throw it across the corridor, the door opening.
"Damn it" She sighed, putting a hand to her head when she felt a sharp throbbing pain.
She still wasn't back to full strength, so using her telekinesis powers took a lot out of her. She started to make her way upstairs, and hid behind a door when she heard voices. Listening closely and peeking through, she could see May, Ward and Lorelei talking.
"Get out of her way" Ward said, menacingly.
"It's her plan, not yours. Fight it. I know you. You're a fighter" May explained.
"Is this her? The beautiful warrior with a heart of ice? His heart now beats in concert with mine and mine alone" Lorelei stated, as she leaned in for a kiss, making Kayla grimace.
"No reason to make this about us" May retorted.
"Oh. He told me who he desired before me. But, my dear...it wasn't you" Lorelei smirked.
Before Kayla could think too much into what she had said, she saw that Lorelei was walking towards her and decided to make her move. She reached out and used her telekinesis, stopping a confused Lorelei from getting any further. Slowly, Kayla moved from where she was hiding behind the door, coming into view.
"How are you doing this?" Lorelei asked, intrigued.
"I've got some tricks up my sleeve" Kayla shrugged, trying not show the effect of using her telekinesis was having on her.
"You look injured" Lorelei stated.
"It's not that bad, but thanks for the concern" Kayla retorted.
"And you must be the strong woman…he talked a lot about you. You're very important to him, I think he even looks up to you" Lorelei explained.
"What are you talking about?" Kayla asked, trying to keep her talking.
"You are strong, while he feels he is weak. But I must say, you're not looking very strong to me" Lorelei smirked, as she saw the strain holding her in place was having on Kayla.
"I am strong, but I'm also pretty smart too" Kayla grinned.
"What?" Lorelei questioned.
"I'm a distraction" Kayla whispered like it was a secret.
Realising what this meant, Lorelei started to push harder against the invisible force that was keeping her in place, and soon broke the hold. She then pushed Kayla out of the way, causing her to loose consciousness for a moment.
When she came back to, she heard fighting and smashing glass in the nearby room and quickly picked herself up. She ran to where the noise was coming from and saw Ward and May on the floor, Ward with a gun pointed at May's face.
"Ward!" Kayla shouted, his head snapping towards her.
For a moment, she thought he was going to shoot her, but instead he just looked at her with a frown, as if he was trying to recognize her face. A moment later, May raised her hand, showing that the gun Ward had, didn't have any bullets in it.
"Whoa, whoa. Wait a minute, it's me" Ward stated, standing up, as Sif and Lorelei entered the room.
"He speaks the truth" Lorelei announced, as May punched Ward in the face.
"Good to know" May said, as she walked off.
"Ouch, that looked like it hurt" Kayla suggested, walking towards Ward.
"Yeah…are you okay?" Ward asked.
"I'm good...looks like my plan worked" Kayla smirked, winking at Lorelei.
"Thank you for delaying her" Sif nodded at Kara, who smiled back.
