"I'm afraid this might scar" Simmons announced, as she put cream onto Ward's cuts.
"Upside...you'll look badass" Kayla told him.
"He's gonna be fine, though, right?" Fitz questioned, obviously worried.
"He will if you back up and give me some room" Simmons accused.
"So, what then?" Coulson asked, as Ward continued telling them what happened.
"By the time we got to the Fridge, it was too late. It was overrun...Hydra everywhere. We couldn't stop them" Ward explained.
"What were they after?" May inquired.
"Everything. They took weapons, alien artifacts...anything they could grab" Ward continued.
"I assume that means the prisoners are no longer prisoners?" Coulson gussed.
"So...Ian Quinn..." Skye tailed off.
"I'm sorry. He's out. They all are" Ward exclaimed.
"Well if he's ever stupid enough to come our way again, I'll take care of him" Kayla said, a dark look in her eyes that Ward didn't miss.
"And Garrett? Did he get away?" Fitz questioned.
"Couldn't stop them from taking the Fridge, but I wasn't gonna let Garrett walk...not after what he did" Ward stated.
"Is he the one that did this to you?" Kayla asked.
"He was a tough son of a bitch" Ward told her.
"Was? Past tense?" May questioned.
"As soon as I had the upper hand, I put two in the back of his head" Ward announced.
The gears in Kayla's brain started wiring at this fact. She had seen had Ward and Garrett interact, he cared a lot for the older man. She couldn't believe that he would be capable of killing him, let alone shooting him in the back of the head twice.
"Good" Fitz mumbled.
"One from me...one from you" Ward said to Trip.
"I would have emptied the mag" Trip replied.
Ward then turned to look back at Kayla who had a strange look on her face, as if she was studying him.
"You're all set...well, I mean, as set as you can be with two cracked ribs and a zygomatic fracture" Simmons corrected herself.
"Uh, for those of you that don't know what that is, that's a hairline fracture to the cheekbone" Fitz explained as Trip finished the sentence as well, making Kayla chuckle lightly.
"Your body needs time to heal. Please take some time" Simmons pleaded.
"Understood. Thanks" Ward exclaimed.
"Ah. One small victory. Hydra didn't get their hands on this" Ward motioned, showing them the hard drive.
"A hard drive?" Trip inquired.
"It's all the research our team's ever done, downloaded off the plane and encrypted for safekeeping" Skye addressed.
"See, I told you…safe hands" Kayla stated, nudging Ward.
"We should probably back it up now that we're in a secure facility" Ward suggested.
"First, Skye, I need you on threat assessment. Pull up a list of all the inmates at the Fridge. I want to know just how bad this is" Coulson announced.
"This is really, really bad. Quinn is the least scary of the bunch, and he shot me...twice" Skye told them all, once she had looked into their files.
"Quinn's more a sociopath. A lot of those inmates are full-blown psychopaths...Violent, impulsive. And some with superpowers" Coulson explained.
"Trust me, Quinn's plenty violent" Kayla retorted, remembering their encounter.
Ward placed his hand on her knee, in the hope to comfort her, and she gladly placed her hand over his.
"Is Marcus Daniels on the list?" Coulson asked, as Skye showed him his file.
"That's him. Cross-check the list of inmates with crime databases, recent activity. Got a feeling we'll be seeing a slight uptick" Coulson advised.
"Okay, but that'll take time, and more computing power than my laptop. Agent Koenig probably has some sort of-" Skye started but was cut off by Coulson.
"I'm going to need you on a mission. Kayla, do you think you can handle this?" Coulson inquired.
"Yeah, I guess" Kayla shrugged.
"The plane you flew in on...is it operational?" Coulson questioned.
"Yeah. You need me to pilot?" Ward asked, standing up with a grunt.
"You heard Simmons. You stay and get better. I'm gonna take a splinter team out and start going after inmates on that list, starting with Mr. Daniels. I think I know where he's going" Coulson theorised.
"Uh, you sure it's wise to split up the team, leave this base? What if it's part of Hydra's plan...a distraction?" May suggested.
"She's got a point. I mean, Fury brought you to this base for a reason. We're safe here" Skye added.
"I'm sure if HYDRA really wanted to find us they could find a way. I don't think we're any safer here than we are out there. In fact, we're more isolated here" Kayla retorted.
"Exactly. And what about everyone else...people who don't happen to have access to a top-secret underground shelter? What about them? I don't know if it's wise, but it's right. I'm taking a team, and that's the end of it" Coulson announced.
A little later they were all rounded up for 'orientation'.
"All right. Just gonna need you guys to answer a few questions, a few psychoanalytic, non sequitur questions" Koenig announced, as he showed them a large metal chair.
"A lie detector" Coulson realised.
"The lie detector, Agent Coulson. This baby measures galvanic skin response, oxygen consumption, micro-expressions, biofeedback brain waves, pupil dilation, voice biometrics...96 variables in all. Fury designed this himself. He wanted a lie detector Romanoff couldn't beat" Koenig explained.
"Did she?" Ward asked, biting his thumb.
Kayla couldn't help but think that was odd, Ward had been trained to never show any tells, and right now it was very obvious he was nervous. She shook her head, figuring he must have just felt comfortable enough around them.
"Like Fury would tell! Okay. Sooner we get this done, sooner we can get to work. So who wants to go first?" Koenig inquired.
"Not me" Kayla mumbled.
She went to second to last and sat uncomfortably in the chair as Koenig set everything up.
"We're gonna start with some easy questions and establish a baseline. Can I have your full name?" He asked.
"Kayla, no other name" She told him.
"You named yourself?" He inquired.
"No, I was found with a tag on me…like an animal" Kayla sighed.
"Sorry" Koenig mumbled, obviously feeling bad.
"Eye color?" Koenig questioned.
"Blue" She replied.
"You ever been married?" Koenig quizzed.
"No" Kayla laughed.
"Please list your immediate family" Koenig requested.
"I know I have a brother, everyone else is unknown" Kayla exclaimed.
"Do you have contact with him?" Koenig asked.
"No" Kayla said quietly.
"What's the difference between an egg and a rock?" He inquired.
"Uh…ones tastier than the other" Kayla shrugged, earning a chuckle from Koenig.
"Have you ever heard of Project Insight?" Koenig questioned.
"No" Kayla shook her head.
"Ever had any contact with Alexander Pierce?" Koenig requested.
"No" Kayla repeated.
"You wash up on a deserted island alone. Sitting on the sand is a box. What is in that box?" Koenig went on.
"Tough one…a year's supply of chocolate" Kayla stated.
"S.H.I.E.L.D. no longer exists. The agency has been labeled a terrorist organization. So why are you here?" Koenig asked.
"I've got nowhere else to go to be honest. These guys are my friends. And Skye's my best friend, I'll stick with her through this" Kayla answered.
"Hm, this suggests that is all true but there is something else you're not telling" Koenig told her.
"Okay, okay. I'm here for Ward as well. I want to stay with him" Kayla explained, a small smile on his face.
"You like him a lot, huh?" Koenig inquired.
"Yeah" Kayla replied.
"Let's go get your lanyard" Koenig grinned.
When she stepped out of the room after gaining the lanyard, she saw Ward leaning against the wall outside. She didn't miss the way he was flexing his left hand, as if in pain and frowned. He stopped immediately when he saw.
"Piece of cake?" He questioned.
"Lots of talking about yourself, so you're going to hate it" Kayla stated, as Ward's face fell.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine" Kayla exclaimed, reaching up and pulling him down into a soft kiss.
"We need to talk after this by the way" Kayla told him, as she pulled away.
"About what?" He inquired.
"Well I remember you saying you needed to talk about something, and now so do I…so hurry up" Kayla said, nudging him.
"Yeah, yeah" He grinned, as he watched her walk down the corridor.
