"What is your full name?" Koenig probed, as they started.
"My name is Grant Douglas Ward" He replied.
"Please list your immediate family" Koenig announced.
"Two parents, a sister, two brothers. Don't have contact with any of them" Ward answered.
"Boy, your baseline's getting a lot of spikes. Are you in pain?" Koenig questioned.
"Yeah, only when I breathe. Two broken ribs" Ward explained.
"Okay, well, try not to move. It may affect the results" Koenig warned.
"I'll try my best" Ward stated.
"What is the difference between an egg and a rock?" Koenig quizzed.
"Egg's a food. Rock's a weapon" Ward exclaimed.
"Have you ever heard of project Insight?" Koenig asked.
"No" Ward told him.
"Ever made contact with Alexander Pierce?" Koenig requested.
"No" Ward stated.
"You wash up on a deserted island alone .Sitting on the sand is a box. What's in that box?" Koenig questioned.
"It would depend on the island...Where it is, how big, what's the terrain? Is there fresh water?" Ward suggested.
"Just say the first thing that comes into your head" Koenig insisted.
"A pistol" Ward replied.
"S.H.I.E.L.D. no longer exists. The agency has been labeled a terrorist organization. So why are you here?" Koenig inquired.
"I'm an agent. It's my duty" Ward said, as the machine picked up on the lie.
"I need you to give that to me again" Koenig told him.
"It's my duty" Ward repeated, as Koenig picked up his gun.
"I'm gonna ask you a follow-up. Agent Ward, are you associated with Hydra?" Koenig asked.
"Yes. We all are. They've infiltrated the highest levels of our organisation" Ward deflected.
"Like you mean it. Are you Hydra?" Koenig requested, taking the safety off his gun.
"I'm loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D... to Agent Coulson...and to my team" Ward tried out.
"Do you have another agenda here?" Koenig questioned.
By now Ward was starting to panic, he knew he wasn't convincing anyone. He did care for the team, but they weren't the reason why he was there. It was because of Garrett…and Kayla, he realised. He had wanted to come back so he could at least see her one last time, this had seemed like a good opportunity.
"Agent Ward, why are you really here?" Koenig insisted.
"Kayla, I came back for her. I want to be with her" He told him truthfully.
"Kayla?" Koenig inquired, as Ward nodded.
"Cool" He shrugged, putting the safety of his gun back on.
The team apart from Kayla, Ward and May soon left, so she went to find Koenig and do what Coulson asked.
"Here's something…Police report out of Morocco, attempted murder. The victim says the guy appeared out of nowhere, disappeared into thin air" Kayla announced.
"Yeah, you just described every mugging ever" Koenig retorted, more interested in this tablet.
Kayla noticed that all their names were on it and realised that he was tracking them. She looked down at her lanyard and smirked. She then threw it at his head with a giggle.
"What was that for?" He questioned.
"For stalking us!" Kayla exclaimed, pointing to his lap.
"Wait, that's it! We could get visuals on the guys that ran from the Fridge" Kayla suggested.
"That's a good idea, but, uh, right now S.H.I.E.L.D. sat surveillance is dark" Koenig shot her down.
"Ours aren't the only ones up there" Kayla smirked.
"Well, the only other satellites in the vicinity that could have…The NSA. You want to hack the NSA? That's a terrible idea. The NSA's already got S.H.I.E.L.D. on its watch list. Why poke the bear...the big, scary, waterboarding bear?" Koenig explained.
"Oh come on, live a little" Kayla insisted.
You can't goad me into..." Koenig trailed off, when he saw Ward coming in and hid his tablet.
"Ward, help me out here. If we hack NSA satellites, we can get footage from the Fridge breakout, see who was there, where they went" Kayla explained.
"Well, she's right. It's worth trying…You know, I can't hack the NSA, but maybe I can upload the hard drive you gave me, get the specs on the weapons they might be carrying" Ward probed.
"Absolutely. We should. But we can't. The encryption is location-based. We'll have to take a field trip at some point to decrypt it" Kayla shrugged.
"Okay! All right. Color me impressed. Now impress me more. Get me that footage. These are the keys to the comm/sat room. The mainframe is in there. Start the hack but then send the feed to these monitors. Let's live dangerously" Koenig announced.
"Hell yeah" Kayla grinned.
"How long before you get visuals?" Ward asked.
"Uh…I'm a little rusty. Give me an hour or two" Kayla replied, rushing out the room.
"This is exciting. Let's see if being sneaky pays off" Koenig exclaimed.
While Kayla was hacking, Ward went to find May, fully aware of what he might have to do. He found her by the bunks and approached her.
"How's it coming? Is the bus operational?" Ward questioned.
"Still banged up, but she's ready to fly. The fuel line's been repaired, and the tank's full" May answered.
"What's the range on this thing?" Ward inquired.
"Just under 10,000 miles" May stated, as she picked up a large bag.
"Are you leaving?" Ward said, trying to keep the relief out of his voice.
"Yeah. I was here for Coulson. But he can't see past me lying to him" May explained.
"I get why you did it. When you get orders, you don't question them. You follow them...no matter the price" Ward exclaimed, his eyes clouding over as he thought about his own situation.
"Yeah, well, this price was too high. I lost him. Coulson doesn't want me here. He doesn't need me" May told him.
"So, what should I tell him?" Ward requested.
"Whatever you want. He won't hear it" She retorted, walking away.
Ward let out a deep sigh as he went to sit on the bed. Is that what Kayla would feel like? He would lose her? Could he live with that? But could he live without Garrett?
"How's it going?" Ward questioned, as he walked towards Koenig.
He had been thinking over his decision for the last hour until his head hurt, so he had decided to take some action.
"Oh! Hey. Believe it or not, Kayla got us in! We have access to the NSA's complete sat-feed history! That girl's good. I can see why you like her" Koenig grinned.
"Uh, the images are a little patchy, but they're gonna clear up any second. Uh, I guess living on the edge really pays off sometimes" Koenig theorised.
"Yeah. Sometimes" Ward sighed, as he closed the door.
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! Sorry that I stole so much of Skye's dialogue and this was a total filler chapter. Next chapter there will be some romance...and tears. Yep, the betrayal is just around the corner:( Please leave a review!
