Not soon after that, Garrett had ordered him to take a detour, and capture FitzSimmons, who had been seen spying on their plane. Reluctantly, he found them nearby, as he approached them, Fitz let out a scared gasp.
"Long time no see" Ward announced, as he walked towards them.
Fitz's face quickly softened a moment later, even Simmons frowned.
"What happened to your face?!" Fitz questioned.
Ward had seen what he looked like before he left the Bus, and knew that one of his eyes was glued shut because it was so swollen, and the rest of his face was covered in purple bruises. He had managed to walk to them, with only a small limp, but had to grit his teeth to stop himself from crying out in pain.
"There's no need to make this difficult" Ward told them.
"You don't look like you could beat up a fly right now" Fitz retorted.
"Still got my hands" Ward stated.
"Go on, then. Hit me" Fitz said, marching right up to him, toe to toe.
Ward didn't react, didn't know how to. How could he hurt Fitz?
"Come on, Garrett's waiting" Two Hydra soldiers announced, from behind him.
This however, did seem to frighten them, because reluctantly they started to follow behind him.
"Go on ahead, I've got this" Ward informed them.
"Did you do it?" Simmons inquired, as they walked alongside him.
"Do what?" He questioned.
"Are you the one who hurt Kayla?...Her neck…" Simmons trailed off, in disgust.
"You honestly think I would do something like that?" Ward asked, doing a double take.
"I have no idea what you would do. I don't know who you are" Simmons explained.
"…Is she…" Ward stuttered, not sure what to say.
"She's heartbroken" Simmons answered.
"She's not coping very well" Fitz admitted, as they walked onto the Bus, and the two Hydra soldiers, took them in.
What did that mean she wasn't coping well? Was she sick? Was she eating enough? Could she even sleep at night? He knew, he couldn't. Every time he closed his eyes, he remembered the way she looked at him with such raw anger.
"Here they are" Ward announced, as Garrett came into view.
"This is our plane. We want it back" Fitz said, and Ward had to admire his bravery.
"Really? Just like that, kid? Coulson probably figured out we're using the barbershop. Call Kaminsky. He'll know what to do. All right, let's close up the ramp and get this bird off the ground. Tell the pilot to keep it low in a harrier mode until we're out over the gulf" Garrett explained, as Ward noticed Fitz had put his hand into his pocket, and grabbed his arm.
"What's he got there?" Garrett inquired.
"One of those prank joy buzzers" Ward replied, confused.
"Yeah. You know me...always kidding around" Fitz stated, as he pressed down on the buzzer, which blew out the lights in the room and made Garrett collapse.
"What the hell was that?" Ward questioned.
"An E.M.P" Garrett answered.
"Looks like the joke's on you" Fitz smirked.
"Garrett's dying! Not sure this will work. Fitz shorted him out with an E.M.P. Call Cybertek. Let them know what happened. See what they can do" Ward said, as he ran around the lab like a crazy person, trying to find anything that could help.
"Get back" Ward ordered, as he dropped to Garrett's side.
"I'm glad that I did it. You hear me? You lose, we win" Fitz explained.
"You're dead" Garrett told him.
"Well, no worse than you. And you don't have to take orders from him anymore, Ward. Ward! Let him die. He deserves to die. Look what he did to you!" Fitz insisted.
"Get them out of here! Clear! Everybody out!" Ward shouted, as they were marched out the room.
"Internal battery must have fried. I'm gonna have to open it up, see if there's a mechanical fix" Ward suggested.
"I talked to Cybertek. They're prepping a facility in Miami" Raina informed them.
"I need you to do something for me" Garrett said, clutching onto Ward's jacket.
"Yeah. Anything" Ward replied.
"Put down Fitz and Simmons" Garrett ordered.
"What? No. There's plenty of time. I won't leave you" Ward insisted, trying to deflect.
"And I'm telling you to cross them off for me. That's not a weakness, is it?" Garrett questioned.
"No" Ward gritted out.
"Then take care of them" Garrett stated, as Ward went to do what he had been told.
He was climbing down a ladder when he found them, Simmons screaming in shock, as they ran the other way. They managed to lock themselves in a pod, as he was just a fraction of a second too late.
"Open the door, Fitz" Ward told him.
"Ward, please...I need to understand" Fitz pleaded.
"You need to accept the truth, Fitz. He doesn't care about us, about anything" Simmons exclaimed.
"No. I don't believe that. We're friends, aren't we? We've been friends. We've had laughs together" Fitz explained, bringing Ward back to an old memory of when Garrett had told him to shot his dog, Buddy.
He hadn't been able to shot Buddy, could he really hurt FitzSimmons?
"I know that you're a good person, Ward. And you can choose right now to be good. It's a choice" Fitz insisted, repeating the same thing Kayla had said the day before.
"I've got my orders. Open up the door" Ward asked.
"No" Simmons replied.
"Not a chance" Fitz added, backing away.
"Okay. Have it your way" Ward stated.
"Wait. What are you doing? Fitz" Simmons exclaimed, when Ward went over to one of the monitors.
"Okay. Wait" Fitz started.
"What are you doing? No, no, no" Simmons repeated.
"Okay, wait" Fitz objected.
"Ward, just think about this" Simmons suggested.
"Wait, Ward. Ward. Okay, wait, wait, wait, wait! Wait, wait, wait! Okay, okay, okay! Just loo... Ward, look at me!" Fitz begged.
"Think about this!" Simmons demanded.
"Ward, just turn around! Don't do it!" Fitz gushed, as Ward turned to face him.
"It'll be okay. These pods are designed to float" He told them.
"Then we'll be floating in the middle of the ocean! Don't do it, Ward!" Fitz fretted.
"Those other soldiers are going to be here any minute, and they will shot you. You'll have a chance" Ward retorted.
"No, Ward! Don't! Ward, look at me! I know that you care about us, Ward!" Fitz shouted.
"You're right. I do. It's a weakness" Ward whispered.
"I'm sorry" He stated, as he pressed the button.
"Ward!" Simmons shrieked, obviously terrified.
"Waaard!" Fitz screamed, as they plunged into the sea.
As he watched them go, he knew it was all over. He might have just killed two of the only people who he ever cared about, and he knew he would have lost Kayla. There was nothing left.
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! So I think this was probably the first chapter without any Kayla in I just realised. I've tried to show how Ward really didn't have much choice here, as it was either him on the other soldiers who would have got FitzSimmons. Please leave a review:)
