Six months later and a lot of things had changed. The most important thing being that Fitz was now awake, but he wasn't back to normal, not by a long shot. His brain damage wasn't as bad as had been feared, but it certainly had an impact on him. He couldn't remember some words and would stutter a lot now, which would bug him. Kayla was just happy that he was alive, as it could have been much worse. She and Fitz had grown much closer over the last few months, and would often spend most of their time together, because they had become the outcasts of the team. Kayla spent most of her other time in her separate training room, which Coulson had assigned her because most people got freaked out by her telekinesis. Fitz would often come to watch, fascinated by how much she had improved. Another change was that she and Trip had become close friends, seeing as he was the only person who was willing to spar with her. His fun loving attitude and sense of humor made him good to be around, and he would often find some way of cheering Kayla up. May's relationship with her hadn't changed much, the two had always been a bit frosty towards each other and that hadn't really changed. Coulson wasn't around much seeing as he was the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D which Kayla didn't mind, seeing as she was still angry with him. There had been some new guys put on the team, Mack and Hunter. They seemed nice enough, but Kayla made sure to keep her walls up. Simmons relationship with her had changed a lot over the past six months, she had blamed Kayla for what had happened to Fitz the moment he had woken up, and was not afraid to tell her that. She had often seen Simmons giving her cold looks when they were in the same room that would make Kayla's skin crawl. She had now gone on a undercover op at Hydra, and even though she and Kayla weren't on good terms, she still worried about the scientist and hoped that she was alright. The person whose relationship with Kayla had changed the most with, was Skye. For almost three months, Kayla spent most of her time in her room, and would often only come out when there was a mission. This had led to her and Skye drifting apart. When she had started to get better, and go outside more, she found that Skye would spend most of her time with May. The two had become very close, and Skye had become excellent at fighting. Kayla would often offer to spar with her, but Skye would usually come up with some excuse. She had overheard Skye telling May once that she was disappointed that Kayla had let 'some guy mess up her life so much', so she figured that Skye probably thought she was pathetic. She had read her file by hacking into the system about a month ago, and saw that Coulson had suspected that Kayla had become depressed and was even saying that he thought she needed counselling. Kayla was beginning to think that maybe she would take him up on that offer until she got to the end of her file and saw that Coulson had put her on a constant watch. In his report he stated that she was vulnerable and could easily be manipulated into joining an enemy's side. This only helped to fuel her anger towards him.
"That was great!" Fitz exclaimed, after she had finished destroying the dummies with her telekinesis.
"I think it was a record time" She couldn't help but grin, and patted him on the back.
"Let's go get something to eat" She told him, as they left the room.
Kayla had slowly regained her appetite after she went for months not eating much. In fact for a while she didn't really seem to do much at all. Things had changed after the incident in Iowa when she realised that things couldn't carry on the way they had been.
"-And you know what she said…'stuff you Hunter'…I mean who even says that!" She heard someone say as they walked into the kitchen.
"Hey" She announced, as she saw it was Skye, Mack and Hunter, as Fitz nodded at them.
"And what did you say to her?" Mack asked, obviously amused.
"Told her she wasn't worth it" Hunter replied.
"Let me guess, you're talking about that evil wife of yours again" Kayla suggested, as she grabbed something to drink.
"She's the devil" Hunter insisted.
"She wasn't that bad" Mack explained.
"She was a liar, manipulative and mean…her only redeeming quality was her hair" Hunter told them.
"I bet she was still better than Kayla's ex" Skye joked, as an uncomfortable silence washed over them.
"I don't know Skye, Miles was pretty bad" Kayla retorted, as Skye went on to tell the others about him.
Kayla sighed, and went to make some toast. Everyone tried to avoid the subject of Ward, especially Kayla. The others all seemed to get a nervous glint in their eyes when he was mentioned, and Kayla couldn't figure out why. It was only ever Skye who brought him up. She tried to not let it show how much it affected her, and would often try to change the subject like she just had. Some days she would forget Ward even existed and it was those days that she actually slept peacefully. She had nightmares frequently now, and she knew the others could sometimes hear it from the way they would look at her in the morning. She knew it was pathetic and stupid that just hearing his name would affect her so much, but she couldn't help it.
"Kayla, look" Fitz said, bringing her out of her thoughts.
She looked down at her hands and realised that she had been cleaning them for the last two minutes. That was also something that had got worse over the last few months, her OCD. It had got better a few years ago, but now it was back in full force.
"Sorry" She mumbled, as she went to dry her now red hands.
Fitz looked at her, worry plain on his face. He was the only person she had admitted it to, because she knew he wouldn't make a big scene of it. She didn't have a very bad case of the disorder, but it had started to become more of a problem. She would find herself obsessively washing her hands, trying not to step on the cracks in the kitchen, not wanting to open doors with her hands in fear that they were dirty, and the worst bit was the counting. A few days ago she found herself checking her door was locked eight time before she went to bed.
"You want some?" Kayla asked Fitz, holding out her toast.
Fitz shook his head in response and scurried out of the room, probably going back to his lab. He had been affected badly when Simmons left three months ago to go undercover. Before then things had already been weird between the two, Simmons could barely look at Fitz sometimes.
"Hey Kayla, think you could work some of your mojo on me?" Trip questioned, as he approached her.
"That mojo is simple first aid" Kayla retorted, as she grabbed the first aid kit.
Tripp had a nasty cut on his bicep, probably from when he was sparing from one of the others. Kayla had left a little while ago and went back to England for a month. While she was there she got went on a basic nursing course, which Tripp had teased her for. When she came back he had even bought a sexy nurse costume for her which she quickly through in the bin with a laugh.
"Ouch!" Tripp exclaimed, as she poured some disinfectant on the wound.
"Aw, poor baby" Kayla taunted, as she pinched his cheek.
"Think it will leave a badass scar?" Tripp inquired, as she bandaged it up.
"Nah, it'll heal up soon enough" Kayla told him, finishing up.
"Alright, you want to come watch a movie?" Tripp asked.
"Maybe…" Kayla trailed off, not really sure.
"Come on, it'll be fun" Tripp insisted, pulling her away.
"I'll come as long as I get to pick the movie" She suggested.
"You better not pick the Notebook" Tripp stated, making Kayla laugh.
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this really long chapter! This is a prelude to season 2 which I will be starting next chapter. You'll find out soon enough what the incident in Iowa was. Also I figured that after everything Kayla has gone through recently any pass mental illnesses would start up, and figured that OCD would be a good idea, as it is something that can get better and worse over the years, and as a sufferer myself, I wanted to put it in. Ward will be coming up next chapter, which will give a lot of angst and sadness. Please leave a review:)
