Ward was surprised when he saw the light in his cell turn on that night, his internal clock telling him it was around three in the morning. He pushed himself up and saw it was Kayla standing on the other side of the barrier, and he couldn't help but smile.
"What are you doing here?" Ward asked, softly.
"I saw the CCTV feeds" Kayla replied, as Ward realised what this meant.
"I'm…I'm sorry you had to see that" Ward told her.
"I want you to promise me that you won't hurt yourself again" Kayla insisted.
"Why?" Ward inquired.
"Why what?" Kayla questioned.
"Why do you care if I hurt myself or not?" Ward queried.
"Because I'm not a sadistic freak who enjoys seeing people hurt themselves" Kayla retorted.
"Will you be coming here again?" Ward asked.
"Your information was right…Coulson will want me down here again" Kayla explained.
"I promise I won't hurt myself again. I'm through all that. When I came out of sedation, I was clear-headed, accepting...of who I am, what I've done, and why" Ward announced.
"Care to fill me in on that part?" Kayla suggested.
"Garrett built me up, made me into who I am. I thought he should be the one I was loyal to because of that, but I was wrong. I see that now" Ward exclaimed, as Kayla turned to walk away.
"Thank you" Ward suddenly said, as she reached the stairs.
"For what?" Kayla inquired, genuinely confused.
"For showing me that there are good people in the world. I didn't realise there were until I met you" Ward explained, as Kayla closed the barrier between them and let out the breath that she had been holding.
The next day Kayla was called into Coulson's office, which was strange because she had already given him all the intel Ward had disclosed. When she walked into the room, she saw a women sitting at Coulson's desk and frowned.
"What's going on?" Kayla asked.
"This is Dr. Harper, we've decided that we think it would be a good idea for you to see her from time to time" Coulson announced.
"A shrink? You want me to talk to a shrink?" Kayla questioned, hardly able to believe it.
"We just want what's best for you, we're worried-" Coulson started, but was quickly cut off by Kayla.
"Don't pretend to care about me Coulson. We all know the only person you care about is Skye" Kayla retorted.
"I'll leave you two to get started" Coulson stated, walking out of the room.
"Please have a seat" Dr. Harper suggested, as Kayla begrudgingly did so.
"So what mental disorder am I supposed to be suffering from? Or is it a mix?" Kayla inquired.
"I don't know yet…you seem rather unimpressed by Coulson" She trilled.
"He left me to die and he's forcing me to do things I don't want to do. The normal S.H.I.E.L.D stuff" Kayla shrugged.
"You seem resentful. If you do not like it here, why do you stay?" She requested.
"I couldn't leave even if I wanted to. Coulson would hunt me down and put me in a cell. I'm too dangerous to be allowed to roam free, you know" Kayla explained.
"You feel like S.H.I.E.L.D has weaponized you" She responded.
"Yes, now where are your ink are blots. I always liked them" Kayla stated.
"You've seen a psychiatrist before?" She questioned.
"Oh yeah" Kayla replied.
"I don't like lying to my patients, so I will disclose some information. Agent Coulson asked me to look at your encounters with Grant Ward in Vault D" Dr. Harper announced.
"That lying…he said he wouldn't look!" Kayla exclaimed.
"And he hasn't. No one has, and no one will but me. I have already advised Agent Coulson that I don't think it's a good idea for you to regularly go down there" She explained.
"Why's that?" Kayla queried.
"Well I've analyzed the feed and there's a worrying amount of fear and anxiety in your body language" Dr. Harper told her.
"Well I thought I handled it pretty well" Kayla retorted.
"You did, but it's obvious to see how uncomfortable you were. You couldn't look into his eyes for long, you were constantly crossing your arms, and whenever he stepped forward you would step back. Those are all signs of fear. You're breathing was fast and shallow, you were constantly fidgeting, and your legs were shaking the whole time. All signs of anxiety" She proclaimed.
"What did you expect me to act like?" Kayla questioned.
"Mr. Ward obviously cares a lot about you from what I've heard" She started.
"Did you miss the whole betrayal part?" Kayla questioned.
"He's never done anything to hurt you and well...from the way he looks at you...this suggests to me his feelings are real. If that is true, he will find it easier to manipulate you, especially because of your feelings towards him" She suggested.
"My feelings?" Kayla asked.
"I was told that you were in a relationship with Mr. Ward. The feelings from that relationship will not be easier to turn off, and it's obvious that you are both still attracted to each other" Dr. Harper explained.
"Well he might be" Kayla stated.
"I just want to explain how attraction could be a problem" Dr. Harper insisted.
"I think with my head and no other part of my body, thanks" Kayla told her.
"I didn't say that, I meant-" She was quickly cut off by Kayla.
"Let's finish this off next time" Kayla announced, standing up.
"There will be a next time" Dr. Harper called out as Kayla slammed the door.
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! I'm posting this today as I'm not going to be around tomorrow. I feel like I didn't really get enough S.H.I.E.L.D bashing done in this chapter, but there will be more time for that later. I've decided to go AU sort of from 2x15...let's just say some stuff goes down. Please leave a review:)
