It had been decided that Kayla would be the best person to try to approach Donnie, and try to get him to come with them because she had powers herself. Kayla also knew it was because they were guessing that she wouldn't die from his powers. She was expendable.

"Donnie?" She called out as she walked down the steps of the ship.

There were bodies everywhere, frozen. Kayla was careful not to touch any of them as she walked past.

"Donnie, are you here?" She questioned, but still got no reply.

"You may not remember me…I was with FitzSimmons at the Academy…do you remember them?" Kayla inquired, as Donnie emerged.

"Agent Fitz's and Simmons? You…you were working with them. Where are they?" Donnie queried as he walked towards her.

"Fitz is…sick and Simmons…well we're not quite sure where she is" Kayla explained.

"Who sent you? S.H.I.E.L.D or Hydra? What side did you end up on?" Donnie requested.

"I'd like to think I'm on our side" Kayla replied.

"Our side?" Donnie questioned, confused.

"I have powers like you" Kayla told him, as she moved a nearby can with her telekinesis as evidence.

"You…you're like me" He stuttered.

"Yes. Donnie, I need you listen carefully, okay? If Hydra gets you they will kill you, no hesitation. S.H.I.E.L.D wants to take you in, but if you don't pose a threat we can just let you be on your way" Kayla announced.

"They want to lock me up, no I won't-" Donnie was quickly cut off by Kayla.

"Hydra is already here, Donnie. S.H.I.E.L.D is the only way that you can get out of here alive" Kayla insisted.

"I can take Hydra" Donnie exclaimed.

"You're not bulletproof! Yeah, you could take down a few…but someone would get you. This is your safest option" Kayla retorted.

"They won't lock me up?" Donnie inquired.

"As long as you don't pose a threat" Kayla repeated.

"O-Okay…" Donnie trailed off, seeing it as his best choice.

"Donnie!" Someone shouted from behind them, making them both jump.

"Simmons?!" Kayla said, her eyes widening as the girl approached them.

"You're not working together?" Donnie questioned.

"I…Donnie, you need to-" Kayla started, but was cut off by Simmons.

"Take a deep breath and clear your mind. Surrender and you will find meaning. Surrender and you will find release" Simmons announced, as Donnie started to frown.

"Agent Simmons?" Donnie asked, confused.

"Take a deep breath" Simmons insisted, as Kayla realised what was happening.

"You know what is best. What is best is that you comply" Simmons told him.

"No, Donnie don't listen to her, she's-" Kayla was cut off when a shot could be heard from above and she saw Hunter and May.

This broke Donnie out of the mind control, as he started to shake his head and become angry.

"You don't think I know what you're trying to do? You're just like the rest of them, you liar!" Donnie shouted as he lunged for Simmons.

Kayla pushed her out of the way just in time, and instead her arm collided with Donnie's hand. She let out a loud scream as she felt her skin start cool. It felt like hundreds of needles jabbing into her arm all at the same time. Donnie frowned, as he took his hand away, seeing that the ice hadn't spread and then ran after Simmons. She soon fell to the floor, the pain starting to become unbearable. She felt hands touch her shoulders a few minutes later before everything went dark.

She woke up a few hours later back at base, Fitz in a chair beside the bed.

"What's…what's going on?" Kayla questioned, disorientated.

"It's okay" Fitz said, as he moved closer towards the bed.

"Ah" She cried, out when she felt a sharp pain in her arm.

She looked down to see she was wearing a sling, a bandage on her forearm.

"Does it hurt?" Fitz inquired.

"Oh yeah" Kayla sighed, sinking back into the pillows.

"The doctors said it would be back to new in days" Fitz informed her, not meeting her gaze.

"Fitz…is something wrong?" She asked, noticing that he was acting suspiciously.

"I…uh, I know about Ward" Fitz exclaimed.

"You went down there didn't you?" Kayla queried, as Fitz nodded.

"Oh Fitz, what did you do?" Kayla requested.

"I…I tried to show him…um…show him…what it's like" Fitz stated.

"You hurt him? He's not…" Kayla trailed off, not wanting to finish the question.

"He's alive" Fitz replied.

"I'm sorry Fitz, I know I should have told you-" Kayla was quickly cut off by Fitz.

"It's okay. You tried" Fitz said, thinking back to earlier.

"I'll leave you to get some rest" Fitz announced, as he stood up and left.

Later that day, Kayla wandered down the Vault D after learning some new information. Coulson informed her that Hydra had brainwashed Donnie, and she couldn't help but hope that the same thing had happened to Ward. He had also told her that Skye had shot Donnie dead, so she was trying to avoid her. It saddened her that there were so little people like her, and yet another one had been killed.

Ward stood up immediately when he saw her and quickly approached the barrier when he saw her injury.

"What happened?! Are you alright?" Ward inquired, worry evident on his face.

"I'm fine" She replied bluntly, and went to sit in the chair.

Ward didn't miss the way she grimaced when she sat down or the way that her breath was coming out in shallow bursts. She was obviously in a lot of pain.

"Are you relieved I'm not Fitz?" She suggested.

"Fitz gave me what I deserved" Ward mumbled, still focused on her injury, making her roll her eyes.

"It's just a little wound…I've had a lot worse" She told him.

She didn't seem to realise that it wasn't the severity of the wound that was throwing him off, but more the fact that he wasn't there to stop it from happening. If he was still on the team, it wouldn't have happened. He'd hurt her again.

"Donnie's dead" She informed him.

"I'm sorry" Ward told her, a knowing look in her eyes, which made her sigh.

She knew somehow that Ward would be the one to understand. That he would know how hard it was to see someone like her die. Even though she hardly knew Donnie, they had a connection because of their situation…and it scared her how if she didn't do exactly what people wanted her to do, she could end up with the same fate.

"I'm uh, glad I could help" Ward stated, sitting down.

"You said Hydra had a way of convincing people. You were talking about brainwashing weren't you?" Kayla suggested.

"It's not done often, but it's done. It's a lot of work, and some people aren't susceptible. It's mostly used on high-value targets" Ward explained.

"Like you?" Kayla questioned, not being able to keep the hope out of her voice.

"I wish I could say that's what happened. But I swore I'd never lie to you. No. I was never brainwashed. Everything I did, good and bad...I did of my own free will" Ward announced, as Kayla shifted her eyes and clenched her jaw, obviously upset.

"Do you believe I'm telling you the truth?" Ward inquired.

"I just don't know why. I don't know what you hope to achieve by-" Kayla started, but was cut off by Ward.

"I don't hope for me. I hope for you. I know something. And I want you to believe me when I say it" Ward exclaimed, waiting to see if Kayla gave her approval.

When she gave no indication as to wanting him to stop, he continued.

"I believe your family is alive and they know Skye's father. He can help you. And someday, if you let me, I'll take you to him" Ward informed her.

"No...I don't care" Kayla told him, as she quickly ran up the stairs, closing the door behind her.

Everything was becoming too much today. Seeing Ward, Donnie dying, and now finding out that Skye's dad knew about her parents. She didn't know how to process all this information.

"You want to spar?" A voice boomed, as they approached.

She turned to see Trip standing before her, a worried look on his face.

"Yeah…thanks" Kayla replied, as she followed him away from the vault.
