"So Kayla, what would you like to talk about today?" Dr. Harper questioned, but got no reply.

"Some footage from Ward's cell was deleted this week, I'm guessing that was due to you" She continued.

"What did you talk about?" Dr. Harper insisted.

"I want to see Ward's file" Kayla announced.

"Why?" Dr. Harper inquired.

"I want to understand. I think it would help me" Kayla replied.

"You're a good hacker, I'm surprised you haven't already found it" Dr. Harper suggested.

"Coulson's deleted most electronic copies, he's locked it all up in his office" Kayla explained, gesturing to the room they were in.

"The Director had given me strict orders not to give you access to that, I'm afraid" Dr. Harper informed her.

"Have you seen it?" Kayla asked.

"No, Ward isn't a patient of mine" Dr. Harper told her.

"Well I am, and I think it would help me. C'mon, we're in his office, it wouldn't be hard to find" Kayla stated.

"I think that you want to find an excuse for what Ward's done so that your life will be easier. That is not the solution" Dr. Harper insisted.

"Fine, fine. I guess you want me to blab about my feelings now…" Kayla trailed off.

"I imagine it must be difficult being forced to spend so much time with your ex" Dr. Harper suggested.

"Its also quite difficult being forced to talk to a quack" Kayla rolled her eyes.

"I'm only here to help you, Kayla. You obviously cared a great deal for Ward and he betrayed you. I imagine some feelings must still be there, even if there are buried deep inside" Dr. Harper went on.

"How about we stop talking about Ward and start talking about my current problems? Like Coulson's treatment towards me" Kayla spat out.

"You have to understand having a powered person working here can't be easy to manage" Dr. Harper stated.

"Its not easy for me either! Half the people in this base act like I have some sort of horrible disease and the other half want to experiment on me. And let's face it, to Coulson, I'm expendable. Actually it would probably be much easier for him if I died in the field" Kayla explained.

"I see. You're focusing all your anger and rage onto Coulson" Dr. Harper nodded.

"Well, its got to be focused on someone" Kayla shrugged.

They finished off their session quite quickly and before Dr. Harper could leave, Kayla gave her a quick hug.

"I just wanted to say thank you…I can't really talk to anyone else about how I feel" Kayla explained.

"I'll see you on Thursday" Dr. Harper replied, and walked away.

Once she had fully turned her back, Kayla looked down at the key card she had stolen when she hugged the women and smirked. She was going to find out the truth.

She went back to the room much later that night, when most people had gone to bed and snuck in. It was a lot harder to find than she thought it would be, but eventually she found a large file with his name on the front. It started off stating basic information, age, height, family etc. The bit that she was interested in was his past before S.H.I.E.L.D. She found lots of articles about the Ward family, and what good people they were. Sighing, she continued to look through the file and found Ward's medical records, her eyes widening in horror. The pages went on and on. Injuries ranging from anything like bruising all the way to a punctured lung because of a cracked rib. All the injuries were put down to him playing to intensely with his brothers. It made Kayla's blood boil, she had seen many cases such as these when she had been growing up in care. Nobody ever seemed to put the signs together. With a frown, she typed in Ward's name into the computer and soon found some interesting articles. They were mostly scandals, such as who was cheating on who and who was to inherit what, but eventually she found a very different article. On the top of the page was a blurry picture of three boys, one standing over the other two. The article stated that in a nearby town, the eldest son of the Ward family was seen to beat up Grant, who suffered from an array of cuts and bruises. It went on to say that this wasn't the first incident to be seen, and maybe the Ward family wasn't as perfect as everyone thought. It was the only article of its kind, probably because their family bribed everyone else. Shaking her head, she looked back at Ward's file to see that he had joined S.H.I.E.L.D at 20, and was soon taken in by Garrett who became his S.O. Kayla distinctly remembered Ward telling her that he had met Garrett at 15, and quickly figured out that they must have known each other before. She looked through his record throughout S.H.I.E.L.D. and found it all to all be very good, he made amazing progress in practically all places. Searching deeper into the file, she soon found a much darker picture when she looked at Ward's failed missions. They would always end up with him beaten black and blue, which didn't make any sense because he wasn't injured on most missions. Once again, Kayla sighed when she saw nobody had picked up the pattern of Ward's abuse. She went back to the computer and started to look through the footage of Ward and Garrett. She easily found her way to hacking into their hotel rooms and was sickened when she saw Garrett beating Ward to the floor in most of the footage. Ward just took it, didn't fight it, he even looked happier after it. Kayla rubbed her hand down her face and thought back to the day that she found out Ward was Hydra, and how she had gone on to punch him repeatedly. She remembered thinking that she was surprised that she had been able to get in so many attacks, seeing as he was a Specialist. She now realised that he probably thought it would help, that it would make her feel better, that he deserved it. Kayla quickly stood up, closing down the computer and put the file back where she found it, and hurried down to Vault D. She was surprised when for once she found Ward sleeping and looked at her watch to find it was three in the morning. She glanced over at the sleeping Ward, thinking that she had never seen him look so peaceful, so care free. She almost didn't want to wake him. Almost.
