The objects outside the door started floating in the air, reminding Ward of the day that Kayla found out that he was Hydra. He quickly rushed in the room, to see Kayla with her head in her hands and Cal cautiously stepping away.
"What did you do?" Ward growled.
"I just…I told her the truth" Cal stated.
Ward walked towards Kayla slowly, and kneeled in front of her, putting his hands on either side of her face. Ward looked at Cal angrily, indicating that he wanted to know exactly what he said.
"Her parents tried to kill her when she was a baby…I didn't think…" Cal trailed off.
Ward turned back to Kayla, who was now practically shaking, and realised that she must have been having a panic attack. He pulled her into a hug as she immediately gripped onto his shirt as she cried into his shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her, one hand rubbing soothing circles on her back and the other caressing her hair, while he whispered calming words into her ear. It took a few minutes but soon, Kayla's crying and shaking was stopping, but she still didn't pull away. Ward rested his cheek on her hair, as her breathing slowly got calmer. A few moments later she started to pull away, not looking at Ward or Cal. Ward turned her face with a finger on her chin, as he brushed away a few stray tears on her face. He immediately realised how close they were, him kneeling in between her legs, hands on her face. He hadn't been this close to her since his betrayal.
Meanwhile, Cal had been watching this interaction. He had known as soon as Ward had started talking about Kayla that he was in love with her, but it wasn't until that moment that he realised that it was the same for Kayla. The way he and his wife used to look at each other. Suddenly, Ward and Cal were ordered out of the room, while Kayla was forced to stay. Not long later, she was forced into an open room, spotting Whitehall, Raina, Cal, Ward and Skye, who was holding the Obelisk. Kayla's eyes widened, when she realised it didn't seem to be effecting her like the others.
"Ah, our next guest. I want you to take the Obelisk" Whitehall announced.
"…You're kidding me, right?" Kayla asked.
"Now" Whitehall insisted, as the soldiers around her raised their guns.
"Are you seriously threatening to shoot me now? Are you sure you have enough bullets for that?" Kayla queried.
"True, but we only need one bullet to kill either of them" Whitehall said, gesturing to Ward and Skye, as the soldiers trained their guns on them.
"Don't" Ward told Kayla, through gritted teeth.
"There's only a 50/50 chance it'll kill me, so what the hell" Kayla stated.
With a sigh, Kayla grabbed the Obelisk from Skye's hand, scrunching her eyes shut, expecting to feel herself turning to stone. When she opened her eyes she now saw the Obelisk was glowing, and realised for some reason it didn't seem to affect her either. Before she had time to process this, Skye grabbed the Obelisk out of her hand and killed a guard with it, her father doing the same with a scalpel, as Ward shielded Kayla from the rest of the guards, holding his gun up.
"I hope you're as special as your mother, Skye. I'll confess...I didn't recognize you when you first barged into my office" Whitehall grinned, as Raina took the Obelisk from Skye.
"If my daughter wasn't here, I would tear you and your men to pieces" Cal spat out.
"Well, then, I'll add that to the number of reasons that I'm glad she's here" Whitehall retorted.
"You are the piece of the puzzle that I can't decipher. Why are you really here?" Whitehall asked Ward.
"Is it really that hard to see? It's love. Agent Ward believed if he could get Skye's father to tell Kayla more about her family than she would see him for what he really is. A good man" Raina explained.
Ward turned to look intensely at Kayla, who returned the stare, realising that what Raina was saying was true. He actually loved her.
"Aww. It's a pity that you won't get to find out anymore, you won't get to fulfill your destiny and you won't get your vengeance for what I did to your wife" Whitehall smirked.
"Secure him. Remain alert around Agent Ward. He's a trained killer one of the best. I have a feeling that, in time, I can make you comply" Whitehall informed the guards.
"Been there, done that" Ward told him, as the soldiers secured him.
"You touch me, you die" Kayla exclaimed, at a guard who tried to grab her.
"You don't get restrained, he dies" Whitehall insisted, as Kayla reluctantly let them tie her hands together.
"Kara?" Kayla questioned, when she saw the brainwashed girl enter the room, after they had been tied up.
"You know her?" Ward queried.
"Brainwashed by Hydra. I tried to help her" Kayla replied.
"I don't need help from S.H.I.E.L.D" Kara informed her.
"I'm getting that" Kayla sighed.
"The woman you look like...Agent May? I knew her" Ward started.
"Little bit more than knew, Ward" Kayla added, struggling against the ropes.
"Are you still jealous about that?" Ward asked, with a cocky grin, but Kayla simply ignored them.
She supposed it should have been obvious how Ward felt about her all this time, but someone saying it at loud made it feel real. She actually felt bad for him because she didn't feel the same way. But there was some part of her mind, laughing at her and insisting that she did.
"How did you end up with her face?" Ward questioned.
"Serving Dr. Whitehall" Kara exclaimed.
"That's got to be an interesting story. Doesn't it bother you?" Ward suggested.
"I didn't have a purpose before. I was lost. Now I'm happy to comply" Kara smiled.
"So you're loyal to Hydra" Ward accused.
"I'm loyal to Dr. Whitehall" Kara insisted.
"There was a guy I used to be loyal to. He went completely insane" Ward admitted.
"Not another word" Kara warned, holding her gun up.
"Happy to comply" Ward smirked, as Kayla couldn't help but smile at the irony.
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! Things are starting to get intense, I wonder why Kayla wasn't effected by the Obelisk? Please leave a review:)
