*Flashback*
"What are you guys doing?" Kayla inquired, as she walked into the living room on the bus.
"Skye's found an app that tells us all the meaning of our names" Fitz explained.
"Ooo, I know Leo means Lion. What does Fitz mean?" Kayla questioned.
"How did you know what Leo means?" Simmons asked.
"I used to have a stuffed toy called Leo the Lion" Kayla admitted.
"Aw!" Simmons and Skye cooed.
"I remember that, you used to carry him everywhere. What happened to him?" Skye queried.
"I'm not sure…I guess he got left behind" Kayla shrugged, as she went to sit down on the couch next to Ward.
"Okay, Fitz means…the son of…" Skye trailed off, not sure what to think.
"A bit anti-climactic" Kayla laughed.
"Me next!" Simmons piped up.
"Alright, well Jemma means…Gem, I guess that makes sense. Simmons means…ugh, this one is really hard to find for some reason…Listening or navigator" Skye announced.
"Gem navigator? That's not as good as I had hoped" Simmons pouted.
"Alright me next, Skye means…sky as in cloud. Wow, really?" Skye grumbled.
"You're just too unique, Skye. I vote we do Mr. Grant Douglas Ward next" Kayla giggled, watching as Ward rolled his eyes.
"Douglas?" Everyone laughed.
They were all laughing so much that Kayla decided to grab Skye's phone and search that name herself.
"Alright, Grant means…great…Douglas means dark and Ward means…guard. You are a great, dark, guard" Kayla informed him.
"Not so bad I guess" Ward admitted, as Skye grabbed her phone back.
"Ooo, Grant can also mean large. What do you think of that Kayla?" Skye smirked, giving her friend a wink, as Kayla rolled her eyes now.
"What does Kayla's name mean?" Fitz inquired.
"Saving the best till last. Okay, Kayla's name means…pure" Skye giggled.
"Aw, that's sweet" Simmons added.
"Kayla is pure in a lot of ways" Skye mumbled under her breath.
"Wait…are you saying…" Simmons trailed off, mouth wide open.
"Skye!" Kayla accused, annoyed.
"Oh Kayla, it's alright that you're still a-" Simmons started but Kayla cut her off.
"Hey, I'm younger than you guys alright?" Kayla insisted, blushing like mad.
"Well I lost my virginity when I was 15" Skye confessed.
"And complained for a week. I was traumatized" Kayla told them.
"Oh, I know! Let's compare first times" Skye announced.
"Let's not" Kayla said, shaking her head.
"Well my first time when I was 17…nothing that exciting" Simmons informed them.
"With who?" Fitz queried.
"Pete" Simmons shrugged.
"Butch Pete?!" Fitz stated, surprised.
"What? He was a good kisser" Simmons replied.
"What about you Fitz?" Skye asked.
"I was 20…and drunk…it wasn't great" Fitz admitted.
"What about you Robot?" Skye questioned Ward, who had been trying his hardest to stay out of the conversation.
Ward just shrugged in response, which obviously bugged Skye, who was about to start.
"Okay! Well its getting late, so I think we should all be going to bed" Kayla suggested.
"Yep" FitzSimmons agreed simultaneously.
"Fine" Skye sighed, leaving the room with them.
"Thanks" Ward said to Kayla, once they had left.
"Well thank you for not getting involved in all the 'Aw's'" Kayla grumbled.
"It's nothing to be ashamed of" Ward exclaimed.
"It really is, Ward" Kayla retorted.
"It's better to wait" Ward insisted.
"Pft, I bet you had all the girls just falling at your feet when you were younger" Kayla suggested.
"…Something like that" Ward mumbled.
"What? Like you're a virgin?" Kayla laughed, knowing it was impossible.
"I'd prefer to be" Ward confessed.
"What do you mean?" Kayla asked, a bit concerned.
"Nothing" Ward shrugged, going back to reading his book.
"Hey?" A voice suddenly forced her from the memory.
"Oh, hey Fitz" Kayla stated.
"Are you okay?" He questioned, worried as to why she had zoned out.
She nodded slightly.
It had been happening more and more frequently recently. She would zone out to old memories. Sometimes really old memories from when her and Skye were just kids and sometimes it was only from a few months ago. However, a common denominator was in most of them, there was Ward. She supposed being in his cell caused him to always been in the back of her mind. Three months, in this damned cell. She had given up hope of ever leaving it.
"They said you haven't been eating again" Fitz informed her.
"It's the poison" Kayla told him.
"We've been over this. No one has poisoned your food. And besides you can't die, remember?" Fitz explained.
"They'll find a way" Kayla mumbled.
All of a sudden Fitz was crying. She frowned, not knowing what to do, so she simply started calling out his name.
"Sorry…I'm sorry…it's just…you…your hair" Fitz stuttered.
Kayla took one of the short strands of her hair and shrugged.
"It was annoying me" She divulged.
"They said you cut it with a knife…" Fitz trailed off.
"I didn't like it" She repeated.
"But you always liked your hair. You always said it was your best assets, remember?" Fitz suggested.
"Why do I need assets anymore?" Kayla asked.
"Maybe we can get someone in to cut it properly…it looks strange all…choppy" Fitz observed, as Kayla let out a harsh cackle.
"Do you honestly believe they're going to let anyone near me with scissors?" She went on, still laughing.
"…They said you've been going into your…shadow state a lot" Fitz piped up.
"It's nice…and safe" Kayla shrugged.
"You are safe, Kayla" Fitz proclaimed.
"Safe?! Everyone in here wants me dead. They all hate me" Kayla theorised.
"No one hates you. They're just scared" Fitz clarified.
"They've always hated me" Kayla repeated.
"How's Skye?" She inquired, a moment later.
"Good, she's good. Sorry she couldn't be here, she was busy" Fitz informed her.
"She doesn't want to come down here. She doesn't want to see me" She responded.
"No, that's not true" Fitz insisted.
"She called me a monster" She said, remembering the one and only time Skye had come to see her.
"She was upset" Fitz suggested.
"She doesn't like things like me or Raina" Kayla told him.
"They just…scare her" Fitz pointed out.
"I want to sleep now" Kayla announced.
"I…Okay…I'll be back tomorrow" Fitz offered, as Kayla nodded, and then laid down on her bed, shutting her eyes shut tight.
"Are they going to keep the lights on?" She asked, muffled from her pillow.
"They have to turn the lights off for six hours a day...maybe you should sleep then" Fitz suggested.
"No, not then. I have to stay awake" Kayla told him.
She closed her eyes again as she heard Fitz walk out of the room, and thought back to the memory earlier. What had Ward meant?
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! That flashback was something I wrote ages ago, so I felt like I might as well add it in there. Poor Kayla, three months in Vault D, how long is she going to last?
AwesomeGirl909: Yeah, I also prefer stories that go episode to episode. I'm really proud of Kayla's character development. I've planned to go AU in season 3, just because I haven't really liked where the storyline goes, especially with Ward. We're going down the same Inhuman route though, so Skye/Daisy is still going to have her team of Secret Warriors. Thank you for this review:)
Secret-writer91: It's good that Fitz is always there for Kayla, especially when no one else is. It's really sad how Skye and Kayla's relationship has broken down recently, its mainly because Skye has changed a lot as a person, become more of a 'super spy' and is really scared about her own powers at the moment. Ward is certainly not going to be happy when he hears about this.
Guest: Thank you! Fitz and Ward are going to team up to help her, but it could not be for quite a while.
Tiffany: When Ward finds out about what's happened to Kayla, he's definitely going to try his best to get her out. Kayla and Ward will eventually get back together, they're inevitable.
Guest: Ward's going to be very angry when he finds out about Kayla's terrible treatment. Fitz and Ward will team up to help her, but it's going to be a very difficult situation, especially because of the tension there, and the fact that Ward is going to take quite a lot of time to heal from Skye's attack. It's going to take quite a while for Kayla and Ward's relationship to be fixed, Ward's certainly got a lot of work to do.
