Ward sat down opposite to Kara, who grabbed the menu at their table and started to read the contents. A bubbly waitress soon came over to them to ask about what they wanted to eat, but Kara couldn't seem to decide.
"You like fried chicken? Ours is the best in the county" Their waitress suggested.
"Oh, I-I'm not sure. I...I guess I need another minute" Kara stuttered, not being used to making decisions of her own.
"Of course. And what about you, handsome?" The waitress flirted.
"Think I'll try the pumpkin pancakes" Ward replied.
"Ooh. Good choice. How about I grab you some pecan syrup while your friend makes up her mind?" The waitress smiled, as she walked away.
"Pumpkin pancakes. For dinner?" Kara questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"Did you not hear what she said about the pecan syrup?" Ward joked.
"Well, you are just full of surprises" Kara laughed.
"Hey, I tried being the meat-and-potatoes guy" Ward shrugged.
"Well, I didn't know that guy, but...The guy sitting across from me isn't so bad" Kara admitted, almost shyly.
"Says the girl who saved my ass back in Puerto Rico, nursed me back to health" Ward exclaimed.
"Well, what else was I going to do? After Whitehall was killed, I was...just...lost. Then Kayla came up to me, told me you could help. I'm glad I listened to her" Kara stated.
"So am I" He nodded.
"Looks like we're a go. I was really looking forward to those pancakes" Ward sighed, as he saw their target stand up.
"All right! Everybody on the ground now!" Kara shouted out, holding up her gun, as Ward shot out the cameras.
"Do as she says, and nobody gets hurt. Don't worry, Rhonda. Everything's gonna be just fine. Even left you a tip" Ward smirked.
"You. Get up" Kara told the target, sniveling in the corner.
"Please, just take it. There's over $200 in there" He offered.
"Put that away. You're coming with us" She informed him.
"Why?" He queried.
"You're gonna fix my face" Kara replied.
Kayla sighed, as she flopped back onto her bed. Surprisingly, the counseling from Dr. Garner had been helping, probably only because at least it was more human contact, but she was feeling a little better. That was until Fitz had told her the news about Skye.
"So Coulson is taking her to a safe house?" Kayla questioned.
"Yeah, I think it was the Hulk's back in the day" Fitz replied.
"Well, what about me? Why don't I get a house? Anything more than this fucking cell" Kayla argued.
"Her father is after her…and well her powers aren't so…" Fitz trailed off.
"Evil?" Kayla suggested.
"You're not evil" Fitz insisted.
"Then why is everyone treating me that way. Why is what I am going through any different than Skye's? I tell you, it's because I'm not Coulson's surrogate daughter. She could kill who ever she wanted, and Coulson would just turn the other way. But me? No, I get put in solitary confinement" Kayla ranted.
"I've been trying to get them to give you some things. A book maybe" Fitz stated.
"And what did they say?" Kayla queried.
"It was too dangerous" Fitz sighed.
"Oh yeah, better watch out. I'll somehow kill everyone in this base from behind the wall…with a book!" Kayla said, with a mock gasp.
"You seem better" Fitz suggested.
"Shrinks aren't so bad" Kayla admitted.
"Agent Fitz, time's up" A nameless agent, informed them through the speakers.
"Until tomorrow I guess" Kayla rolled her eyes.
"I'll keep fighting for you, Kay. You know I will" Fitz told her.
"Thanks, Fitz. For sticking by me" Kayla replied.
"Thanks for sticking by me too" Fitz smiled at her.
"Have a seat. I'll be right in" Ward heard Kara call out to him, when he entered the room.
"Pumpkin pancakes" Ward couldn't help but grin when he saw she remembered.
"When you left, it got me thinking...what do I have to offer that you would even want?" Kara went on, as he heard her walk into the room.
Suddenly he felt hands massaging his shoulders and instantly tensed up, not used to the contact. Before he could say anything Kara had climbed onto his lap. He was about to ask her what she was doing when he saw her face. Kayla. His heart pounded, as suddenly she leaned in to kiss him. He couldn't help but close his eyes for a second, imaging that the woman on his lap was Kayla. But it was wrong. All wrong. Her kisses were too desperate, her moans to needy, even the way her hands touched his neck was wrong.
"Wait. What are you doing?" He questioned, pulling away.
"I'm giving you what you want" She smirked, as she leaned into kiss him again, but he pushed her away.
"You're wrong" He told her.
"You don't have to pretend. I saw the way you looked at her" She explained, as he pushed her off her, not being able to deal with her being that close.
"But you're not her…this isn't right" He exclaimed, backing away.
"I…I'm sorry, this was so stupid" She confessed, tears in her eyes.
"I don't want to lead you on. I…I love Kayla. I always have. And I think I always will" Ward stated.
"I just thought maybe if I looked like her…maybe you would be happy. Maybe I could help you like you've helped me" She theorized.
"I don't want you to be her. I like you for who you are. You're my best friend. Probably…my first real friend, the one who knows everything but still accepts me" Ward told her.
"I just don't know who I am anymore" She sighed.
"I know. We'll fix this. We'll make you better. I promise" Ward insisted, pulling her into a hug.

Secret-writer91: Kayla needs all the friends she can get, doesn't she? Oh, and I'm reading your Primeval fanfic. That show literally was my childhood.
Castiel Angel Heart: Aw, thank you! Yeah, I stopped watching after the season 3 mid-season finale, after they killed Ward the show was over for me. But AU's still live on. I love Ward and Fitz as well, such great characters.
