Fitz sighed as he looked at the CCTV of Kayla in the Vault. She was curled up in a ball, her blanket over her head. She needed out, and that meant he had to do something he really didn't want to.

"Mr Fitz…I have what you wanted" A voice announced from behind him.

"Thanks Danny. Remember, no one can know about this" Fitz insisted to the agent.

"Of course…are you sure you know what you're doing?" The agent questioned, knowing who Fitz was trying to contact.

"No, but I have to do this" Fitz told him, as the agent passed him a piece of paper and walked away.

Fitz grabbed the burner phone he had procured a few days prior and walked into the nearest closet, closing the door behind him. It was the only place that he knew wouldn't be bugged. He then dialed the number on the paper, took a deep breath, and put the phone to his ear.

"Who is this?" A voice questioned on the other line.

"It's me" Fitz replied shakily, recognizing Ward's voice.

"Fitz?" Ward replied, confusion in his voice.

"I don't have much time. Kayla's in trouble and I don't know what to do" Fitz announced.

"What's happened?!" Ward exclaimed.

"She got these new powers, and they locked her up, and I've tried to get her out, but I don't know what to do, I'm just a scientist, how am I-" Fitz hyperventilated, before Ward cut him off.

"Fitz, breathe. Where is she being locked up?" Ward inquired.

"Your vault" Fitz told him.

"…Damn-it" Ward sighed.

"There must be some way to get her out, right?" Fitz questioned.

"I spent 6 months trying to find a way. There was nothing. They didn't take any chances" Ward explained.

"Then what are we going to do?" Fitz insisted.

"What's her new power?" A female voice asked, from the other end.

"Who is this?" Fitz queried.

"Kara Palamas, but at S.H.I.E.L.D you probably know me better as the bitch who stole Agent May's face" Kara spat out.

"Agent 33? What are you doing with Ward?" Fitz questioned.

"I don't think that's very important right now. Her power?" Kara went on.

"She can turn into this…shadow being. It can kill just by touching you, it's pretty crazy" Fitz stated.

"So if we find a way to get her out of that cell, she'll be able to fight her way out? Okay, that's good" Ward said.

"Wait, this shadow thing, is it literally like a shadow? You know, like a gas?" Kara inquired.

"Yeah, I guess" Fitz replied.

"Are there air vents in the Vault?" Kara asked.

"Well yeah, it's basically massive bars separating the cell from the air vent, she can't break through that, not with her telekinesis" Fitz answered.

"I can get you a tool to cut through that, you would just need to get into the air vent-" Ward was cut off by Fitz.

"Not a 'super spy' remember?" Fitz stated.

"I think you're missing the obvious solution here. She can just get past the bars in her shadow state" Kara explained.

"Oh" Both men realised.

"Why didn't I think of that?" Ward inquired.

"Because you always try to find the hardest solution to everything…Look, you need to find some way of getting her to realise she can get through it, but don't make it too obvious…I don't think S.H.I.E.L.D will take too kindly to you helping a prisoner escape" Kara went on.

"I'll do whatever it takes" Fitz informed them.

"Be careful, Fitz" Ward insisted.

"…I'll tell you when she's out" Fitz said, before hanging up.

Kayla sat on her bed, hands over her head as she closed her eyes. She wished she had eaten the gruel they had given her this morning, but the sight of it had been too disgusting to get too close. She heard the door to the Vault swing open, as she shot up to see Fitz walking down the stairs.

"Fitz" She smiled, always happy to see her friend.

"I was wondering if you could help me out with this crossword?" Fitz asked.

"Um, I guess" Kayla frowned, as she got up from her bed to walk towards him.

She squinted at the paper he was holding up against the invisible wall, and saw there was already something written in the crossword boxes.

'Escape through air vent…shadow state. Wait until I've gone. Don't make it too obvious' was written down, as her eyes widened.

"I'm such an idiot…" Kayla trailed off, as Fitz's eyes widened, warning her that she had to go along with this.

"…I mean I haven't done a crossword in years, I've got no idea. Sorry" She shrugged.

"Thanks" He said, placing his hand on the invisible wall, knowing he couldn't say goodbye.

"You're welcome" Kayla replied, putting her hand on the other side of the wall, over his.

"I'll see you soon" He stated, taking a moment before he walked away.

Kayla sat down back onto her bed, making sure not to stare at the air vent on the ceiling. How had she never thought of that?

After what felt like an eternity, but was probably only an hour, she decided she couldn't take it anymore. She hoped that she wasn't incriminating Fitz by escaping so soon after his visit, but she needed out. She quickly changed into her shadow state and allowed herself to float up towards the ceiling. She then nudged herself over to the air vent and felt a small pull before she pushed herself towards it. It felt very strange, as if someone was tickling her. When she opened her eyes again she found that she was now in the air vent. She changed back to her normal state and crawled through the air vent until she came to another opening. She looked through it to see numerous agents walking down the corridor and let out a groan. She had never been very good at being stealthy. Suddenly a siren started playing and the lights started to flicker, as she realised they must have seen she was out of the cell.

"There goes the element of surprise" She mumbled, ready for a fight.
