"So the plan is you'll join a group that are being taken from one of the bases in the South, to the main hub" Kara informed them, after they had finished getting ready and had their masks on.
"And they'll be expecting us?" Kayla asked.
"Yep. Your new name will be Katherine Davis, I have your back story here" Kara said, handing her a file.
"Question. Can I change this accent?" Kayla suggested.
"I'm afraid not. Besides, its English isn't it?" Kara frowned.
"Posh English. It's freaking me out to be honest" Kayla admitted.
"It was the best we could do on short notice. Ward, you're going to be Mason Jones" Kara went on, handing him his own file.
"Hold up, why does this say we used to be in a relationship? How is that necessary?" Kayla inquired, skimming through the notes.
"Well we need some way to explain how you act around each other" Kara shrugged.
"Alright, but we're going to say he cheated on me" Kayla announced, making Kara laugh.
"I think that can be arranged. Now you two better read through each other's files as well, you're supposed to have known each other for 5 years" Kara stated.
"Damn, I wouldn't actually mind having this life" Kayla admitted, as they were driven to the drop off point.
"Hell of a lot better than my life has been too" Ward confessed.
"Also, guess who's supposed to be 22 now…me. I can drink alcohol in any state I like" Kayla grinned.
"They've aged me up too. I'm supposed to be 35 now" Ward scoffed.
"Well you are getting on a bit aren't you? Is that a grey hair I can see?" Kayla questioned, ruffling his hair, as Ward laughed.
"How are you really feeling about going back to S.H.I.E.L.D?" Ward inquired.
"I'm fine. All good" Kayla mumbled, dismissively, suddenly being very interested in her file.
"It's still not too late to back out" Ward insisted.
"No, I'm doing this, okay?" Kayla retorted.
"Once we go in, we can't get back out again. We could be in there for weeks" Ward went on.
"I'll be fine" Kayla told him, as Ward decided to drop the subject.
They were soon left at the drop off point, and not soon after another vehicle drove up and collected them. They settled inside, finding three other people, all in combat gear.
"You guys new recruits too?" One of them questioned.
"I am. He's a veteran" Kayla stated.
"So, you were around before everything went to hell, huh?" A woman questioned.
"Yeah, I trained new recruits at the Academy" Ward answered.
"I've never been to the Main Hub before…what do you think its like? I've heard we might even see the director" The other man went on.
Ward noticed Kayla's leg had begun to unconsciously shake, and put his hand on her thigh, hoping to comfort her in some way. Kayla couldn't help but intertwine their hands together, squeezing his hand back. She was terrified. Terrified that they would get caught, and she'd end up back in the Vault.
It wasn't long before they arrived at the base, after having black bags thrown over their heads, they were brought into a smaller room, and Kayla's eyes widened when she saw a familiar chair. The lie detector we used back at Provenance, Kayla thought to herself. She saw Ward visibly tense up beside her as well. She saw him take a small step back a moment later and looked to the side to see one of the Koenig clones standing there. They were then told to wait in the corridor, and that they would be called through, one by one. They were one of the last to be called, as Kayla was right before Ward. She gave him a worried glance before following Koenig into the room with the chair. She was thankful when most of the questions were the same as they had been the first time she did it, so she simply gave the same answers. However, the last question, as always, stumped her.
"This agency has been labeled a terrorist organization. So why are you here?" Koenig asked.
"…I want to help keep the world safe" Kayla suggested.
"That has come up as a lie" Koenig informed her, now suspicious.
Jesus, what am I going to say, I want to take this organization down actually, would you mind letting me through anyway, she thought to herself.
"Please answer the question" Koenig insisted, picking up a gun.
"…I'm here because of my ex" Kayla blurted out, figuring it was mostly true.
"Go on" Koenig said, still not lowering the gun.
"Um, well he's actually one of the people that has been transferred too. Honestly, the only reason I'm here is because of him. Where he goes, I go" Kayla explained.
"Why do you care so much if he's only your ex?" Koenig questioned, as he lowered the gun.
"I still love him" Kayla admitted, her eyes widening when she realised what she had said.
"Well that's not exactly the best reason to be here, but its enough" Koenig told her, as he started to help her out of the chair.
Meanwhile, Kayla was having a mental breakdown in her head. I just said that because I needed to…but if it wasn't true then the lie detector would have alerted him…Kayla's thoughts trailed off. A little while later, Ward came out of the room, looking almost as awkward as her.
"So, how did it go?" She queried.
"Fine. You?" He shrugged.
"Yep, no problems" Kayla replied.
Ward almost let out a sigh of relief once she dropped the topic. He didn't want to have to admit that he had used her as his excuse for being there.
