Both their hearts dropped when they found who was assigned as their mentor. Melinda May. They were lined up against the wall, as she walked in. Kayla tensed, worrying that she wouldn't be able to fight up to the standard of the average S.H.I.E.L.D agent. She could of course use her powers, but May wasn't an idiot, she would probably see it. Ward had also tensed up, but for a completely different reason, remembering the last time she had seen her…which he hadn't yet informed Kayla of.

"Who wants to go first?" May asked, with a smirk, as everyone backed up.

"If no one wants to go first, I'll choose a volunteer" May went on.

She then walked towards them, momentarily stopping in front of Ward, who gave her a hate filled stare.

"I'll go first" Kayla piped up, seeing that May was becoming suspicious.

"Give me your best shot" May stated, as they walked onto the mat.

Kayla inwardly cringed, preparing herself for the beating she was about to endure. May leaped forward quickly, as Kayla managed to block the first blow. Seeing that Kayla was able to block blows with her fists, May began to use her legs, kicking her in the knee. Kayla dropped to her knees, letting out a cry, as she used her hands to stop May's next kick. Meanwhile, May used her elbow to hit her in the back, winding her, pushing her right to the ground. May then began kicking Kayla repeatedly in the stomach, who tried to block her, but wasn't quick enough.

"Hey! Stop it!" Ward announced, stepping onto the mat.

May raised an eyebrow, as she reluctantly stopped. Ward helped pick Kayla up, who shoved him away, slightly embarrassed.

"Do you think you can do better?" May inquired.

"Why don't you come and find out?" Ward smirked, getting into his own fighting stance.

May began hitting out at him, as Ward expertly controlled her blows, he then caught her hand, twisting it behind her back, as he kicked the back of her leg. Once May was pushed to the ground, she then used her other arm to grab Ward and throw him over her shoulder. May then kicked out, trying to land a blow, but Ward had jumped forward, already back onto his legs. He then used his leg, to pin her to the ground by her throat, a grin on his face. Everyone looked on in astonishment, hardly able to believe someone had beaten Melinda May. Ward looked towards Kayla, who gave him a look indicating that he really needed to lose this fight. Reluctantly, Ward lessened the pressure on her neck, allowing May to grab his leg and push him off his feet, jumping up right.

"Don't turn your back" May told him.

"Good advice" Ward gritted out, standing up and brushing himself off.

Once everyone else had a go, they were allowed to go and showed to their bedrooms. Kayla knocked on his door a little while later, as he let her in.

"I've checked the room for bugs and put in a disrupting device" Ward announced.

"I feel like I've been run over by a truck" Kayla told him, sitting on the bed.

"Feeling bruised?" Ward inquired.

"Just a bit" Kayla chuckled painfully as she showed him the bruises she had.

"God, I didn't realise it was that bad" Ward frowned, seeing the deep bruising on her abdomen.

"I'd probably have internal bleeding if it wasn't for my powers. Three broken ribs by the feel of it still" Kayla sighed, as Ward lightly traced the bruises.

Kayla shivered lightly, gulping at being so close. She quickly pulled her top back down.

"I can't believe you beat her" Kayla stated.

"Well, officially she beat me" Ward reminded her.

"So, what was with those looks? And don't tell me it's about that fight you guys had years ago. Because we both know that's a lie. What's happened since I was gone?" Kayla went on.

"I went back to S.H.I.E.L.D for one mission, we decided to work together" He confessed.

"I'm guessing it didn't go so well" Kayla guessed.

"Simmons tried to kill me" Ward informed her.

"What?! How?" Kayla questioned.

"She tried to use a splinter bomb on me, almost did kill me. Fitz saved me" He exclaimed.

"He did?" Kayla queried, surprised.

"It hit me in the chest…I was so sure I was going to die, but then Fitz suddenly jumped in and shoved a device on top of it. I guess it destroyed it or something" Ward explained.

"But what happened with May?" Kayla questioned.

"I was going to leave Kara with S.H.I.E.L.D, I know it sounds stupid, but I honestly thought that she was better off with them than me. May had different ideas. She was pissed that Kara had used her face or something, so they got into a fight. It escalated…and May shot her" Ward sighed.

"That bitch" Kayla muttered.

"Kara almost died, but she managed to pull through…When I saw her hitting you today though, I just lost it I guess" Ward admitted.

"Well I'm glad you did…I guess I'll have to pretend like I'm really injured for a while now" Kayla stated.

"I think you're avoiding something, or someone" Ward suddenly blurted out.

"What? No, I'm not" Kayla shook her head.

"You haven't even mentioned Skye…well, Daisy I guess now" Ward corrected.

"What?" Kayla frowned.

"She changed her name, got her hair cut, oh and now she's called Quake" Ward shrugged.

"So basically she's got rid of everything that could link her to when we were friends. She's just wiped away all her history" Kayla went on.

"Well you probably don't want to hear my two cents, but I reckon she's just trying to forget because it's too painful" Ward explained.

"I've been in pain too, doesn't mean I've cut my hair into a bob" Kayla grumbled.

"Why are you so upset about the hair thing?" Ward frowned.

"We made this pact when we were younger. They would always force us to get our hair cut really short every 6 months, and we hated it. So we decided that we'd never cut our hair unless the other one did…it sounds stupid, but I'd have thought she'd remember" Kayla admitted.

"…You did cut your hair remember?" Ward stated.

"Well yeah but…ugh, you're right, as usual. Do you think she feels like I pushed her away?" Kayla inquired.

"Kay, she was the one who pushed you away. She wasn't there for you…but maybe you two will be able to work things out once this is all over" Ward suggested.

"Maybe…" Kayla trailed off.

Personally, I've always believed that Ward and May are pretty evenly matched, but Ward would most likely win in the end, but that's just my opinion, haha. Please leave a review:)
