They were still laughing when they saw Daisy's group walking towards them, back to the Inhumans division. It was pretty clear things hadn't gone too well.
"Hey, what's happened?" Kayla asked.
"It got away" Daisy said, shaking her head.
"The thing you guys were sent to take care of?" Ward inquired.
"There one minute, gone the next" The blonde from before replied.
"You didn't see it leave?" Kayla clarified.
"C'mon Lincoln, this is classified" Daisy insisted, pulling the blonde along.
They all got out of the groups way, leaning against the wall, as Kayla frowned.
"You know what that means right? If they didn't see it leave" Kayla whispered to Ward.
"It means it didn't leave" Ward sighed.
"Wait, what?" Fitz frowned.
"The shadow…it's in one of them" Kayla told him, as the Inhumans walked round the corner.
"We have to warn them!" Fitz cried.
"No, Fitz. We can't, they might not even know what happened" Ward exclaimed.
"So, what? I heard what you said those things can do! What if it's in Daisy?" Fitz questioned.
"That's why we can't say anything. It might just be dormant at the moment, but the minute it knows we're onto it…it would kill its host. Try to get full power as quickly as possible" Kayla explained.
"Oh my God…what are we going to do…" Fitz trailed off.
"Maybe we can shut S.H.I.E.L.D down now? So it can't get to anything" Kayla suggested, once they had got back to Ward's room.
"We only have two security codes. We need to take all the security down before we attack, it would be a slaughter otherwise" Ward stated.
"But you have people on the inside. Lots of people" Fitz replied.
"Only 10%...15% tops, even with F.A.S reinforcements…it still wouldn't work" Ward informed him.
"I never thought I'd hear the day where you were trying to stop human casualties from happening" Fitz retorted, not getting a reply from Ward.
"Okay, we can't take S.H.I.E.L.D down. So we have to take whoever the host is down" Kayla theorized.
"And what? Kill them?" Fitz queried.
"Maybe if we could sneak up on them…element of surprise and all that" Kayla exclaimed.
"We could use the night-night guns" Ward suggested.
"You still have them? S.H.I.E.L.D stopped using those ages ago" Fitz confessed.
"They still work well in the field. How much dosage would we need? How much to take them down, but not kill them?" Ward inquired.
"It would depend if it was a women or a man, really" Fitz shrugged.
"Okay, so dosages?" Ward insisted.
"300mg for a man…maybe 250mg for a woman?" Fitz said, looking unsure.
"Maybe? Fitz, this could mean the difference between life and death" Kayla sighed.
"I know, okay. But…it would be a lot less for a normal person, but I'm guessing with this thing in them it would need to be more. It shouldn't kill them…" Fitz trailed off.
"It's the best chance we've got" Ward stated, as he picked up his duffel bag, and started measuring the doses.
"Fitz, I'm sorry. I'm just getting really agitated. The thought of those things being here…its creeping me out" Kayla admitted, seeing Fitz's sad face.
"It's fine. I just hope this works" Fitz replied.
"So, how are we going to work out who it is?" Ward queried, handing Kayla one of the guns.
"Trial and error, I guess. There should be certain signs…they'd be acting weird, easy to anger, could be showing signs of illness, but not always" Kayla explained.
"Wouldn't someone be acting that way if they just had a cold or something?" Fitz asked, as Kayla nodded with a sigh.
Six of the team went on the mission, so the three of them split them into targets. Kayla decided to take Daisy and Lincoln. It wasn't hard to find Daisy, who was in the gym, punching a bag.
"Hey" Kayla announced, approaching her.
"Okay, look. It's really nice and all that you're a 'fan' but I really don't have time for this" Daisy told her.
"I just came to see if you wanted a sparring partner" Kayla said, holding her hands up in defense.
"I could wipe the floor with you, kid" Daisy scoffed.
"Kid?! I'm 22" Kayla retorted, very proud of her older age.
"Yeah, well I'm 28" Daisy stated.
"What? You're 27" Kayla stated, her eyes widening when she realised her mistake.
"Um…how would you even know…" Daisy trailed off.
"Fan, remember?" Kayla lied, scratching the back of her head, awkwardly.
"Hm, my friend used to do that every time she lied" Daisy smirked.
"Small world, I guess. Now, do you want to spar or not?" Kayla asked, with a grin.
With a shake of her head, Daisy removed her boxing gloves, and went to stand in a fighting stance. Daisy was clearly a far better fighter, which showed as she was able to get her jabs past Kayla's blocking. However, Kayla did have something up her sleeve. She had learnt how to use her telekinesis to flow as if it was an extended movement from her. This meant, the few times she was able to get a jab past Daisy's defenses, it winded her, leaving her open for attack. The fight ended, with both girls having their hands wrapped around the other's neck, seemingly coming to a stalemate.
"You're not bad. For a kid" Daisy told her.
"Pft, I was great. You can't deny it" Kayla laughed, nudging her.
Daisy let out a loud laugh, which Kayla joined in with. However, before either of them could say anything, a voice announcement said that Daisy needed to report to the Director's office.
"Duty calls" Daisy stated, packing her gear up.
"Sk…Stay safe out there…" Kayla called out to her, as Daisy frowned, turning around.
She seemed to mull over what Kayla had said for a moment, before shaking her head and leaving the room. Kayla did face palm then, not believing she almost slipped up so badly as to call her Skye. Kayla turned her comms on, that was connected to Ward and Fitz, telling them what she had figured out.
"It's not Daisy, she's fine" Kayla announced.
"Good, move onto Lincoln" Fitz told her, as she went to find him.
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! I'm updating a day early this week, as our car is having some serious problems, which means I'll be very busy tomorrow. I guess that's what happens when a car is almost as old as me, haha. Please leave a review:)
Koos: Thank you so much! Yes, it is Lincoln, we'll see Kayla interacting a little with him next chapter.
