A/N:
Thanks for all the reviews. Hope you're doing well, People.
So Reborn and Tsuna being okay is a long way to go. Let's indulge ourselves first in his little vacation with the other Arcobaleno with small snippet of Reborn's days too. It will be excruciating slow with in coming chapters, but I hope you'll like them in the long run.
(It's optional. Really.)
Anyway, onwards.
Chapter Thirty-Three
Reborn stopped from walking further when he saw Fon sitting on the couch with stacks of papers on the table in front of him. The Chinese demon looked at him pleasantly before nodding his head as a greeting.
"There are seven essays and a notebook. They all came from Tsuna." Fon elaborated as he pushed the papers forward. "I didn't dare read them since it was specifically yours. And I don't think it was written overnight."
Reborn didn't need more motivation to take the literatures. He took them in his arms, threw a quick 'thank you' over his shoulders as he ascended the stairs. He didn't dare look back to verify if Fon did laugh at his eagerness. Reborn knows the other will burst if he saw the red tint on the hitman's cheeks. He closed the door behind him after entering his own room and sat on his bed. He started to scan the papers so he can read the very first essay, but he came across with the sole notebook.
'Reborn's memories' it said. Putting the essays on his bedside table, he caressed the cover of the notebook before he opened it. There's a small note of warning, addressed to Tsuna himself, clearly saying all he will write in the notebook is about the memories of Reborn he will see in his daydream, dreams and idling.
It took some time for Reborn to read everything. It was amusing since they were accurate. But he noticed that they were snippets of his life that has importance for him. He noticed the sloppy handwriting and as if the writer was in a hurry. Probably wanting to record the events immediately before he forgot anything.
"I realized that the old era suits look good in Reborn." He muttered under his breath as he read the passage. "He was pretty much obsessed with guns just as I suspected. And I figured his addiction started after the teller showed him all those gorgeous machineries."
The hitman can't help chuckling, remembering how he wasted a lot of ammo just to test those babies.
"His fedora really suits him too. Luce was spot on with her gift. Another reason why I couldn't finish fixing his hat for two days straight."
Reborn stared at the passage. 'Why can't he finish it?' Then he read the next.
"It hurts to see everything everytime I close my eyes or just look somewhere. The memories are killing me. It keeps reminding me that Luce and the hat will always be important than I am to Reborn. Should I tell him? No. He'll misunderstand."
Reborn rationalized. Yeah. He will misunderstand, remembering his disoriented and foolish state of mind.
"I can see it in his eyes and feel his feelings. He is in love with Luce."
Reborn closed the notebook abruptly. He started to curse. For the contract to be that vicious enough to make Tsuna see those... He shook his head physically. No. He can't let his emotions take control again. Skull was right. He has been a mess since Luce died. So he opened the notebook again with heart racing with anticipation on what's written.
"And still in love. How can I compete with that? God. It hurts. Why does loving him has these consequences?"
His eyes widened. 'Tsuna loves me...?' He shook his head. 'Nah! Maybe as a friend.' A twinge of pain prickled his heart at the thought.
"I had to blame it on Mammon. Why does he has to compare our story from Giotto de Vongola's love story? Mine is unrequited. Should've told that to him in the first place. Wait. I already did."
His mouth hang opened. Tsuna does love him romantically!
"I really hope Reborn won't read this. He'll probably think I'm stupid for falling in love to him."
Reborn chuckled as he turned another page. He want to jump right now like a kid. They're mutual! And they had the same thought! Crap. He should've confessed ages ago!
The next pages has many smudges on it though. It's as if water was whisked on it. He traced them, smelling the saltiness of the water. His mind registered tears, and he knew it's because of him.
"Reborn said I should've blocked him like I did. I thought we reached an understanding about that? But I abide his wishes. I persuaded Mammon's help to teach me how to put a mind barrier on the center of our line. I have to ask him about our contract. Coincidentally, I had a short dream about them. In there, Luce was pregnant. I saw how broken Reborn, but he did a good front. I wish I could be like him. He was even able to tell her congratulations, while I could only muster a smile before I ran away."
"Luce gave birth. I cried when the first person to hold the baby was Reborn. He even named her Aria. They looked good together. I will be a hypocrite, but I really wish they got together instead. In that way, I won't be able to feel like this."
"Reborn started to self-destruct. He won't even look at Luce or the baby. Whenever they're in the vicinity, he'll disappear. It hurts to see him like this. I can bear watching them be sweet, but to witness Reborn do this breaks my heart. However, I can understand him. If it's painful for me, what more for him at that point of time."
Reborn flipped the page.
"I give up. They're back together. It's painful."
The hitman stared at the last page. He was about to close it when he suddenly found himself in front of a brown door. His eyes looked around and noticed that everything is big and he's not in the Arcobaleno house. His attention snapped to the door when it opened, and a man in black robe came into his view. He looked up to see the owner, and it was a blond man with blue eyes.
"Tunafish?" The man called, surprised and a little uncertain.
"Tousan." He found himself saying, shocking him.
"Hey there, buddy." The man crouched down. "It's already late. Why are you still awake?"
"I couldn't feel Tousan and Jii-jii." A child's sleepy voice answered.
"Is it Tsuna?" A gruff voice queried.
'Tsuna?' Reborn thought.
"Yes. He said he can't feel us." The blond answered.
An old man with blond hair and green eyes, wearing a black shirt underneath a green vest with a lot of pockets in it, khaki pants and strap sandals hovered over Tsuna's father. "Probably his intuition again."
"Dad-"
"He has it. You and I know he does. You can't deny that. He even saved Nana from being crushed by a truck, Iemitsu."
"That was just a coincidence." Iemitsu argued.
The old man sighed in defeat. "Fine. Ask Tsuna what's wrong."
"What's wrong, Tunafish?" The father asked.
Reborn felt a beat of confusion and a hum on the back of his head. "Alien-san told me to check Tousan and Jii-jii cause three demons are going to come here."
"Thanks Tsuna." The grandfather stated.
"Wait Dad-"
Reborn jerked back and found himself inside his room. He put a hand on his head and massaged it. That was a memory. He saw the first important memory of Tsuna. And he felt the confusion, the thoughts. He saw two of the most important people in the brunet's world. He sighed as he closed the notebook. Finally, he can understand and know Tsuna more. He won't suffer alone.
Ira is bored. So bored that he went to the Mundane world to do some fun. However, he went to see Tsuna first. But the fish seems not anywhere since he can't sense the child's presence in the castle.
He has been in Hell after he did his last destruction. The sins and Belial were keeping him there, probably afraid that he'll cause a lot of attention on them. They were supposed to be sleeping. But nah, he doesn't care. It's not like Lust hadn't done her own havoc. He heard one of her powerful followers got toasted by a high level demon. However, still a no. He doesn't care. Well, except for his human acquaintance.
He knew he's screwed for being attached this fast. He only met Tsuna twice. But he's just enthralled. Probably a little happy because other than the human can make him a little sane after all the insanity he has, Tsuna is the first human who he made contact with.
Just where is that enigma of a being anyway?
Pouting, he went for the cafeteria. He walked in like he owns the place, not like they can see him anyway. He was about to by pass the table they sat at when he saw a paper on the very furniture. He approached it and took it from its place. The paper- sort of a letter, is addressed to him. It's written in Latin. He noticed how beautiful the child's handwriting before he started to read the content of the paper.
'Hi Ira,If you're reading this, it's probably because I left it there. I wrote it in Latin so no one will read it. Humans are snoopy even though they're scared of me that much.I went home, by the way. I had to. But I did what you suggested. And it worked like a magic. Thank you. I'll be back after three months. Be careful when you're doing your musings, Ira. Don't let yourself get hurt, and eat every once in a week, yeah? I don't think you eat anyway, so please do.See ya later.Tsuna.'
The wrath chuckled before putting a protective spell on the paper and started to fold it so he could put it in his pocket. His boredom slipped off as he thought of what country or city to destroy while walking to the buffet table.
Be careful, he says.
Don't get hurt, he says.
Ah... He is about to eat for the first time this week, just according to the note. He smiled as he sat on the chair and started to munch on his food. Tsuna better have some reward for him, cause he's going to be a good boy in three months.
Meditation. The mother of calmness and serenity. The most recommended therapy for troubled mind, spirituality and emotions. The exercise involving breathing and clear mind. The only recreation that Tsuna always do for when he has time.
Bathed with afternoon sunlight, unfazed by the lazy breeze lightly patting his face and hair, and perfectly relaxed in his crossed legs position, Tsuna found himself in most peace than he did for the past three years. He breathed in and then out before opening an eye to see his companions.
It's only been three days, but the news travelled fast. The report of him arriving had already reached a lot of demons in Namimori. And here they are, relaxing with him in the afternoon glow. He could only chuckle when he felt their presence and started to plant themselves beside him and in front of him. Some had taken a spot on their small grass field just to be near him. He didn't mind, really. Their companies are most likely appreciated.
"Woah."
Tsuna opened all his eyes to see Skull and Fon at the very end of the party. He chuckled. "Hey there."
"Meditating, I see." The Chinese mused, a sleeve covering his mouth and trying to hide his amused grin.
"But these many?!" Skull gaped.
"Shh." Tsuna shushed jokingly, looking around for the play of it. "Kaasan will throw a fit if she discovers that I have a lot of visitors."
Skull covered his mouth and whispered, "She doesn't know?"
"She doesn't. She'll be ecstatic if she does."
"Why?" The Cloud asked.
"Because they're guest." The brunet simply answered before grinning cheekily.
Fon laughed while Skull face palmed. "And because they're guest...?"
"She'll cook plenty of food. She loves to feed them a lot." Many of the demons nodded. "See? As much as they want to eat, they don't want to cause inconvenience. They only want to visit me after all."
"Vfgh." [Tsunayoshi has grown up.] One demon stated, causing a lot of agreement.
"Hey! I'm not that kind of a kid." Tsuna pouted, and the creature beside him patted his head. "Thanks."
"Won't you introduce us to them, Tsunayoshi?" Fon queried.
The child's brows shot up. "Right. So guys, these are Skull and Fon, the cloud and storm arcobalenos, respectively."
"Nice to meet you." Fon bowed with a smile.
"Heyya!" Skull greeted.
The demons tensed up. They are the Arcobaleno after all.
"They're my friends, so play nice." The young man added on, causing them to relax. "Not that I don't see how powerful they are, but they look so friendly, cute and cuddly, so what's so scary about them?"
"Ja-vml.." [Killed a lot.] The demon to his left answered.
"That's given." The child waved off.
"krrl-g." [They can kill you.] Tsuna stared at the demon who said that. "Asgh-rp... Xca-rb." [But since you trust them, we'll trust them too.]
The Sky flushed as a big grateful smile bloomed in his face. "Thank you. Thank you for the trust."
The demons nodded.
"I'm walking to the park tomorrow, you can meet me here by two in the noon." He informed as he eyed his two new visitors.
Tsuna smiled when his companions nodded and started to go. Some patted his head, others waved or saluted at his direction. He uncurled his legs and let them dangle on the edge of floor. They felt a little stiff due to the position he was in awhile ago. He has been here for two hours. He beckoned the two to come closer. Skull sat beside him while Fon stood in front of them.
"So here to visit me?" He asked as he looked back and forth between the two. "I humbly appreciate it."
Fon smiled. "You're worth it."
"You're more cockier than you were." Skull pointed out.
"I'm at home, of course I'll be as a boss as I am." Tsuna huffed before grinning like a child. "Kidding."
Skull captured him in a headlock and gave him a noogie. "You little-"
"Now now." Fon tried to mediate while the child started to laugh and protest at how painful it is. "Skull."
"Nah. It's okay, Fon." The brunet assured as he put a hand on the Cloud's side. "No one said about getting revenge anyway."
The storm arcobaleno could only sigh at the two's silliness. They started to run around the garden, trying to tickle, tackle and tag each other. He decided to sit on his fellow arcobaleno's previous spot and watched them play like kids. Well, they do act like kids even though one is a million years old and the other is a twenty-one year old.
He chuckled when Tsuna tackled Skull and they rolled on the ground after losing momentum. The two stopped right in front of him and started to laugh. Fon smiled as he watched the human guffawed his heart out, happiness is evident on the child's expression.
Fon had lived a long life, and he knew how fragile a heart is. Humans' emotions are very complex and must be handled with care. It is probably the result of staying as a protector and a guardian of a family generations for a lengthy period of time. Spending time watching and taking care of humans he was entrusted to comfort with security and protection, he learned how to do things in a hard way. Once he fails, suicide was the result. He wasn't even that good at it, but it gets better. And he doesn't regret for he has now the knowledge of how he can handle humans in a calm way, unlike others.
Tsuna isn't that different to those he had protected. The brunet is like that man who had lived a good life. He was head strong regardless of all the struggles he was put into. He lost his family, his lover and his home, but he never wavered. The determination to survive is there and the willingness to give everything he has to live was evident. He wept, he smiled, he shouted at the heaven and he laughed. He was transparent, and he's just like Tsunayoshi Sawada.
He once asked the human why do it. Why he is so persistent. And he was answered with a smile. A bright smile. That human was an enigma. Always a mystery to him even until his dying breathe.
"Fon? You okay?" His gaze went to the brunet who looked at him innocently. "Do you want to lay down? Were you two in a mission before you came here or something?"
"Nope. We didn't. We came from the house. And we were in a good condition when we left. Shouldn't I be the one you're asking that? I was the one who got tackled, tickled and tagged a lot. You even made me run." Skull replied.
"It's good for you, Skull. You're getting older." Tsuna remarked.
"What?! I am not old!" Skull denied.
"Answer me, Tsunayoshi. If you were to lose everything, what will be your reason to survive in this world?" The Storm asked instead.
The two gawked at him. He did ask a question out of the blue. It was indeed out of place. But he needs to know what will be the answer of the human who acted so similar to the person he once protected with his pride.
He admits that he once asked this to Luce. And the woman answered that it was to help others to don't suffer the same fate. Possible, but it felt wrong. So now he's asking the child who is staring at him. He wonders what will the human's answer be. Will he respond as same as his late Sky? Or a little different from the man he found mysterious no matter how long Fon had watched him grow?
To his delighted chagrin, the brunet smiled mysteriously.
"What's with the smile?" Skull asked, nudging the child to answer. Fon nodded, seconding the Cloud.
"Well, I kinda remembered those people around me. Kaasan, Jii-jii, Tousan, Hana-chan, Kyouya, Nezu-sensei, you, the rest of Arcobaleno, perhaps Ganauche and Ira, and him." Tsuna looked at the sky. "If I were to lose everything, I just know that all of you will make me promise to never lose hope, live with a smile and be as happy as I could be as if you were there. So Fon," The child looked at him. "if I lose everything, the only reason I'll strive and persist and struggle to survive this world will be the promises I made. Because those promises are what will chain me and perchance save me from all the things that might push me to kill myself."
Fon stared.
He just fucking stared as he pondered. Tsuna's answer seems right. It felt exact. The same reason why his charge survived all through his hardships. He remembers those people who made the man promise before they died in his arms, the words and the emotions swirling. God. How can he forgot? He was there when the man cried in grief and at the promise.
However, he breathed out a sigh of relief. That took out a question from his being.
Promises. The bane of all contradictions and alternate ways. The reasons of several regrets. The cruel word that will encage someone in a tiny little box of minimal movements out of the rules, but does bring satisfaction once fulfilled.
"Did I answer right?" The young man queried, a ting of fear in his tone.
Fon smiled. "Yes, you did. Thank you Tsunayoshi."
"No problem. If it helps, the answer took me twenty seconds to come up with. That's the whole duration of staring at you in surprise. I mean you pulled one that I didn't expect. If a man did survive that kind of life, he's really awesome."
"Licitly, what did this world do to you to make you like..." Skull waved his hand around the human's body who looked at the Cloud funnily. "Like you? Tsuna?"
"Not much." Tsuna shrugged as he spread his arms on the ground and closed his eyes. "But being free is the most nicest thing I ever felt though."
"Speaking of free, are you okay staying out tomorrow?" The Cloud asked.
The brunet opened his eyes and eyed the demon suspiciously. "What are you planning?"
"Nothing nothing."
The gaze of suspicions lingered before the child answered. "I need to get permission first. It's just practically telling them that I'll be out with you. They won't mind, just keep me out of trouble."
Skull hummed. "Do I have to meet your parents to get their consent?"
"No." The human answered. "I don't think so. What made you think that?"
"So I can introduce myself as your boyfriend or something."
Pak. Tsuna cracked when unimpressed Fon bonked excited Skull's head.
"I was joking!" The Cloud cried.
"Ha. Ha. Ha." The Storm laughed stoically. "It was so funny I almost lost my stomach."
Tsuna rolled on his side to hold his hurting stomach as he laughed.
"Hey! Stop laughing!" Skull protested but then smiled as he watched Tsuna tried to gasp much needed air to calm down.
Both demons shared looks before continuing to watch the child who started to snicker again. They're happy to see Tsuna smiling once more.
