Today was the day. The day S.H.I.E.L.D was finally destroyed. There was only one more thing they had to do, get the Director's security clearance. They had left that to last as they knew it was likely that they would have to give up their identities to do it. The plan was to ambush Coulson in his office, get the clearance and take the defenses down. However, Coulson knew the F.A.S had been rising against him, and had upped security detail on him. Kayla had managed to hack into the system and got them put on the task force. That was how she and Ward found themselves in his office with three other agents. They knew that the other agents weren't part of the 25% of S.H.I.E.L.D that was now on the F.A.S side, so they were going to have to take them out. Kayla had been surprised when it was Ward who suggested they simply use a high concentration of the night-night gun to knock them out, seeing as he wanted as little casualties as possible. Ward had turned to look at her, giving her a nod which she knew meant it was time to make their move. Taking the night-night gun out of the waistband of her jeans, she and Ward raised their guns at the same time. They both hit their targets, as Ward took out the last agent. They then turned to a surprised Coulson, with smug looks on their faces.
"You're double agents" Coulson stated.
"Oh come on, Coulson. Don't be so cold, not when we used to be so close" Ward leered, as Coulson frowned.
In response, Ward's hand went to the side of his face and turned off the mask his wearing. Coulson was smart enough to fear this development, knowing how much Ward hated him. Kayla then did the same to her mask, as Coulson tried to mask his horrified gaze.
"What a surprise. Bonnie and Clyde" Coulson spat out.
"Where's the security clearance?" Kayla questioned.
"I'll never tell you" Coulson retorted.
"You're an old fashioned guy, Coulson, so you wouldn't keep it on you…" Ward trailed off, as they both looked around the room.
It was Kayla who spotted the model of Coulson's beloved car Lola, on a nearby shelf. She quickly went over to it, bringing the boot of the car up she found the security card inside. She gave it over to Ward triumphantly as he began to download it to their system.
"Doesn't this all seem a little too easy to you?" Kayla inquired.
"Let's hope things turn out well for once" Ward replied, as he finished downloading the details.
Neither of them had been looking at Coulson and this had given him time to open up his comms.
"This is your Director speaking. We are under attack. I have set off a beacon in the badges of my most trusted staff. If you see someone without this beacon, shot on sight, we-" Coulson ordered, as Kayla shot him with her night-night gun.
A moment later they could hear shooting from outside. Coulson had managed to ruin everything once again.
"That son of a bitch! They're all going to kill each other" Kayla panicked.
"I need to get to the doors to the hanger to let the invasion force through, otherwise this will all just end in a slaughter" Ward sighed.
"And I need to let Bucky out" Kayla added.
Ward then inched the door open slightly, seeing that outside there were almost 50 guards.
"I'll go out there and distract them" Ward suggested.
"It's suicide" Kayla stated.
"Not if I don't die" Ward smirked.
"I'm coming with you, I can help" Kayla insisted.
"No, you're too weak. We don't know if you'd be able to heal if you got shot…I won't risk it" Ward shook his head.
"Well you don't have any healing powers" Kayla retorted.
"Please, Kayla. Just…do this for me" Ward pleaded, holding her face in his hands.
"Ward, I…I need to say something, just in case I never get the chance-" Kayla started.
"You don't have to say anything" He told her, caressing her face.
"No, I do. I get it now. Why you did everything you did. Hydra, Garrett, escaping S.H.I.E.L.D…you've made mistakes, but ever since then you've been trying to make up for it. I know you didn't want to hurt me, to betray us, but I…I understand why you did. You felt like you owed Garrett everything, and I get that now" Kayla explained.
"What are you saying?" Ward asked.
"You said when I found out about you that one day, I would understand, and I do. I understand you, Grant" She told him, using his first name.
Kayla thought that she had never seen him look so happy or carefree in that moment, which was ridiculous considering what was going on outside the door.
"I know neither of us have ever been very good with using our words, so I'm just going to have to show you…" Kayla trailed off, as she grabbed onto Ward's shirt and pulled him down to crash their lips together.
Ward seemed completely shocked by this for about a second, before he was pulling her closer to him and began to kiss her back with equaled passion. She had never understood the saying he kissed her like her lips were air, until now. He kissed her like she was the only thing holding him to earth, like it was the only thing he had ever wanted. She could feel all the tension, stress and worry that had been coiled up inside her for so long disappear as she wrapped her arms around his shoulders. She felt as though she was losing time as his hands trailed up and down her waist, pinning her to him. It was perfect, he was perfect. But perfect never lasted. They both pulled away eventually, breathing heavily, their lips red and swollen.
"Don't die" She begged.
"I won't" He promised, as their first kiss replayed in her head.
She wanted to start over with him so badly, to get to have a clean slate, but time was running out. Her time was running out. But for now, having his arms wrapped around her was enough.
