The tales of afterlife

"Kanade!" Yuzuru's loud voice echoes in the room as he wakes up.

"What's wrong with you, Otonashi-san?" Another occupant of the room asks as her time reading book is interrupted by Yuzuru's shout.

"Oh, it's nothing. I just have a nightmare." Yuzuru replies.

"You fell asleep in the student council room again, Otonashi-san." The girl remarks.

"Yes, sorry about that." Yuzuru apologizes.

"No, it is fine really, everyone can be tired." The girl accepts the apologize.

"And so?" The girl says.

"Huh?" Yuzuru is puzzled. What is the girl want?

"What were you dreaming about? Don't you think it is about time you tell me about your story? You have been asking questions about me recently. Now, don't you think it's time to tell your own?"

"O-oh, I see, you want to listen to my story, huh?" Yuzuru asks.

"Yes, I am." Haruka nods in respond.

In reality though, it actually isn't really in her interest to know the story of the boy, Otonashi Yuzuru. If that was really the case, she would ask him about it when they played the questions game long ago. But since she has some free time, why not? It would help her understand a little better about the boy too. About the reason he decided to stay here, his motives, and etc.

"Well… I suppose I will start from the moment I entered this afterlife…"

-o-O-o-

'Where am I?' That was the question that I thought as I arrived in this world

"Where am I?" I spoke my own thought out loud.

I looked around the place; I saw a few buildings here and there.

"I can't remember anything," I said that as I looked up at the sky.

As I was losing in my thought, I heard a voice.

"Are you awake now?"

After I sat up in respond to the voice, I saw a girl holding some sort of gun.

"Umm…" I spoke as I looked at the girl.

"Welcome to I Ain't Dead Yet Battlefront." The girl spoke.

As I was stunted because of the girl's words, she continued again after tightening the grip on her gun.

"I know this is out of the blue, but could you join our force?"

"Huh? Join?" I said in confusion.

Ignoring my words, the girl continued, "If you are here, then that means you are dead."

"Huh?" I said again, thinking what was the girl saying, I died? If I died, then why I am still able to talk with her like this!

"Umm… I don't know what you me-"

"This is the world of the afterlife," The girl cut me off.

"If you don't act, you will be erased."

"Erased?" I repeated the word.

"By who?" I asked.

"By god, I imagine," The girl responded.

"Then, what's this about joining your force?" I asked.

"I'm asking you to join the I Ain't Dead Yet Battlefront." The girl began.

"Well, the name of the force changes often."

"First, it was the Afterlife Battlefront."

"But that name kind of admits that you are dead, doesn't it?" She asked for my opinion, but of course, I didn't respond.

"That's what we said."

"Ever since we have been changing the name around."

"Right now, we are the I Ain't Dead Yet Battlefront."

"The one before that was the It Doesn't Feel Like I'm Alive Battlefront."

"Now that was a real joke, so we changed it within a day."

"Um, is that a real gun?" Ignoring her nonsense about the name, I asked her the question I'm curious about.

She sighed at my question before began, "Everyone who comes here has the same reaction."

"Be more adaptive."

"Accept things as they are."

"Okay, "accept" and then what happens?" I asked.

"You'll fight." The girl answered.

"Against what?" I continued asking.

"That down there," She pointed at a girl in the field.

"The enemy here on the I Ain't Not Dead Yet Battlefront."

"Angel." The girl said the codename of the girl in the field.

"I would really like to hurry and change I Ain't Not Dead Yet Battlefront to something else."

"You come up with a name." She asked me.

'Hey, hey, that's an ordinary girl there no matter how you look at it'. I thought.

'What's she talking about?' I asked in my mind.

"Hey, mind if I go over there?" I asked the girl.

"Huh?!" The girl seemed shocked.

"What for?! I don't get you!" She crouched up to me, it surprised me a bit.

"How did you come up with that?!"

"You must be an idiot!"

"You should try dying once!"

"By the way, that is a cliché joke in this world where no one can die."

"So, was it funny?"

"P-Putting my thought on the joke aside…" I began.

"I thought I might have a better conversation with her than with a person who points a gun at a girl."

She groaned.

"I'm on your side." She stood up as she said that.

"If you don't want me pointing guns, then I won't."

"Trust me." She asked for my trust.

As I was confused about her actions, another voice interrupted it, "Hey, Yurippe!"

"What happened to recruiting the new guy?" The voice continued.

"We are short on people right now. We need to resort to any dirty trick we have."

I turned to look at the owner of the voice. He was a blue-haired boy, carrying a gun like the girl.

"What?" the guy said.

'Enough about this bullshit!' thinking that I decided to leave these weirdos and went talking to the girl in the field.

"I'm going over there," Saying that, I walked to the girl in the field, the so called "Angel".

"I'm failed to recruit him!" I heard the girl's voice behind me, but I didn't pay it any attention.

'I don't get this. What was with them?' I thought.

"Umm…" I said to the girl in the field to get her attention.

"Ah, good evening." I said hi.

'I better let her know,' thinking so I decided to speak the next words.

"You know you were being targeted by a gun."

"She was calling you an angel or whatnot."

The girl tilted her head in confusion before speaking, "I'm not an angel."

"Obviously, then you're…" I responded.

"I'm student council president," The girl answered.

After sighing to myself and using my hand to hold my temple, I spoke, "What an idiot I am? That girl was playing around with me."

"Damn it! And I don't even know who I am…"

"I guess I will go to the hospital or something," I spoke as I turned around and waving my hand in farewell to the girl.

"There are no hospitals," The girl spoke, stopping me in my track.

I turned around and asked her, "Why is that?"

"That is because no one gets sick." The girl said.

"No one gets sick?" I asked, curious as to what she meant by that.

And I surely didn't expect it, her next words…

"Because we're all dead."

As I was puzzled about the girl's words, the moon shone upon both our faces.

"Oh, I get it! You're in on this too!" I spoke, feeling angry.

"You're trying to trick me, aren't you?!"

"Is this amnesia of mine your doing, also?" I asked her.

"Amnesia is a common thing here." She responded.

"If someone dies in an accident, they often take a blow to the head."

"Then prove it!" I said angrily

"Prove to me that I won't die since I'm already dead…" My words trailed off as the girl approached me.

"Hand sonic," The girl murmured.

Then a blade appeared on her hand, and she used it to stab me in the chest.

-o-O-o-

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha." A sound of laughter echoes in the student council room.

"Oi! What's so funny?!" Yuzuru asks, feeling a little angry.

"Ha ha ha ha ha." The voice still doesn't stop.

"Oi! Oi! I said what is so funny!" Yuzuru repeats again.

"Ha ha ha… I'm sorry, ha ha ha" The voice speaks in between her laughter.

"…" Yuzuru is speechless at the girl's outburst of laughter.

After a while the laughter dies down.

"I'm really sorry about that, Otonashi-san." Haruka speaks after she finally stops laughing.

"Honestly, what's so funny?" Yuzuru asks.

"But, I mean, isn't it funny? You asked the girl to prove that you're dead in this Afterlife, and then she just went stabbing you to prove it. You sure have an amusing way to die." A faint sound of chuckle occurs again after the girl finishes speaking.

"So, do you want me to continue, or do you want to use this time to do some more laughing?" Yuzuru asks sarcastically.

"Yes, yes, you may continue." The girl replies.

To be honest, she didn't think that Yuzuru's story would be this funny and interesting, and it is just the start of the story, too. She wonders what would come next. Some more interesting things? So it seems like it worth her time after all, to listen to Yuzuru telling about his story.

"Well, the next thing is…"

After that Yuzuru talks about how he woke up in the infirmary unharmed, how he joined SSS, how he shot at the angel in his first mission, what happened when they went to the guild, the disappearance of Iwasawa, the baseball games, how if he and Yui hadn't interfered, Hinata would have already moved on, their plan to make angel fail all of the tests, how he tasted Mápó dòufu that the angel bought. How they had a fight with the new student council president, Ayato Naoi and finally got him as their comrade, how he got first part of his memories back from Naoi's hypnosis, how they went to the river and encountered the monster, how they had a fight with the angel's clones, How he got the last part of his memories back, how he and the angel planned to help all of SSS move on, how they fought with shadows, and finally how they all but he, graduated from this place.

About the last part, of course he told her all about his conversation with Kanade at the very end, the fact that he loves that little angel.

Haruka listens to all that with interest.

"I see. It is quite interesting." That is the girl's response after she finishes listening to Yuzuru's story.

"And one last thing, I would say, last but not least, it's about this ring!" Yuzuru looks at the ring on his left ring-finger as he says so and then he begins telling her about the dreams he keeps having; his marriage ceremony with Kanade. And he also tells her about how this ring appeared on his finger after he first had the dream.

After he finishes saying everything, the girl goes silent, trying to contemplate the information she just received.

Yuzuru doesn't bother her, letting her contemplate in peace.

Finally, after a long while, she is done.

"…It is interesting, Otonashi-san, about your story and the dreams you keep having. I will try my best to help you figure out why you are having those dreams.

"You will help? How so?" Yuzuru asks, as he does not think there is a way for her to help him understand the reason of those dreams.

"…I do not know yet. But I believe I can help you somehow… Just trust me!" The girl responds.

"O-Okay…" Yuzuru just agrees with her, not really thinking that she can help him with just those words and her unfounded confident.

And so, time for Yuzuru's story telling comes to an end.

Finally done!
