Angel Player's history 2

I had expected it would just develop like all the other times.

Meet with them, listen to their complaints, help them overcome their regrets, and see them off as they move on. However, what was difference at that time is the fact that the girl refused my offer to help after listen to me explaining the situation to her.

"You can't stay here!"

"You should fulfill your regrets!"

"You need to move on!"

Ignoring all of my protests and persuasive speeches, the girl only spoke one sentence.

"Then what about you?"

"Eh?"

That was the only word that came out of my mouth at the time. It was accompanied by my astonishment.

"H-Hey, Otonashi-san? Don't tell me…" Haruka begins.

"Yes, it seems like a love story," Yuzuru nods, knowing what Haruka wants to say.

"If that is the case then why…. No, I see. So that is how it was," Haruka murmurs to herself.

"What do you mean? You understand what?" Yuzuru asks.

"Hmm? Ah, don't worry about it. You will understand soon enough. Let's continue reading," Haruka refuses to answer.

"Oi! Don't ignore me!" Yuzuru shouts angrily at Haruka.

Ignoring him, Haruka clicks the next button.

Apparently the girl's regret was that she hadn't been able to become a teacher who helps her students back when she was alive. It was her unfulfilled dream. That was the reason why she was worried about me who stuck in this world all alone.

At the time I didn't know exactly how to solve that regret of hers so I offered her to be my helper in helping other souls move on. Hopefully it would be enough for her to solve her regret was what I thought at the time.

Time had passed for so long and yet she wasn't able to move on. Our relationship improved significantly and while I didn't want to admit at the time, I knew that I love her.

At the time I believed that this comfortable relationship of ours would continue forever. However, reality proved me wrong.

After helping countless other souls, I thought that since she hadn't been able to move on, things would stay the same. Yes, I really thought so, at least until that day.

"…It is getting grim, isn't it?" Yuzuru says to Haruka after they have finished reading the page.

"Yes, I guess that it starts to get to the gruesome part," Haruka agrees.

"Ah! Come to think of it, that's right! So that is what you meant earlier huh, Saigusa-san?"

"Oh, so you understand it now huh? Honestly, I'm surprised," Haruka sarcastically says.

"I'm not that dense, Saigusa-san," Yuzuru responds indignantly.

There is no way Yuzuru would not know that the love was unfulfilled from what the texts have indicated so far.

"I wouldn't know. You are so dumb that I'm not able to measure your dumbness so how can I know that you understand what the texts indicate,"

"Grr… I really can't argue with you there," Yuzuru regretfully replies.

"Ok, on to the next page!"

-o-O-o-

Even today, (the day I write these texts) I still remember it vividly, what she said back then on that fateful day. There is no way I can forget it!

She called me, saying she wanted to have a serious talk. After I had arrived, she suddenly apologized to me. Suddenly being apologized to, I was confused so I asked her for the reason.

Honestly, at the time I didn't think it was that big of a deal and prepared to forgive any of her small mischievous actions. But the next words she said stopped my heart.

"It's time for me to move on!"

That was her words as she cried.

I was gobsmacked.

'What was she said again?'

I asked myself that question, couldn't believe the words I had heard at all. However, no matter how much I hated it, the truth still didn't change –She will move on.

"Well, I expected this," Yuzuru remarks.

"That is obvious. If you did not expect this, you would be too dense beyond words," Haruka replies to Yuzuru's remark.

"…It seems like you always think that I'm dumb or dense, eh?" Yuzuru asks in resignation.

Haruka nods.

"Oi! Why won't you deny it a little?! Seriously?!" Yuzuru protests.

"I do not think it would help anything even if I were to lie and deny it. Just accept it, Otonashi-san, you are dumb," the mischievous girl smiles as she says so.

Why do the two of them have this casual conversation in a time like this?

Why won't they just read the next page of the texts?

The answer to these two questions is that they need time to prepare themselves for the upcoming facts written on the next pages in the monitor of the computer.

With this talk their tensions are let up by a bit. And finally after bickering like a real sibling for a while, Haruka clicks on the next button on the screen to read the next page.

-o-O-o-

I was very upset back then.

Ironically, it was me who had wanted for her to move on back when we had first met. But just take a look at now? I DON'T WANT HER TO MOVE ON!

After I remained shocked for a while I finally asked her for the reason. She easily answered to me along with her tears as she had expected me to ask for her reason.

Even now I still remember those words.

"I'm sorry, (My first name)-kun, I lied to you."

Note: Forgive me for not giving you any names. That is exactly my intention.

Those were her first words. When I asked her what she had lied to me, she continued

"Actually, I had 2 regrets. I told you one but kept the other one a secret."

She firmly said to me still in tears.

I realized then that the reason she hadn't move on was because she still had that other regret left.

"The first one is as you already know; it is to become a teacher who helps her students. Although I wasn't able to become a teacher here, this regret of mine is already fulfilled thanks to you."

She still firmly continued her speech despite her overflowing tears with a small sad smile on her face.

"As for the second one, I was too shy to tell you at the time but I believe now is the time."

She paused to take a breath a little and then continued with more serious face than ever.

"My other regret is for me to fall in love with a man and confess to him. Now that I am about to fulfilled it, I have no choice but to move on."

Her sad smiling face at the time was still as brilliant as ever in my eyes despite her tears.

'Don't tell me…' what was I thought as pieces of the puzzle fell together into one place.

I wanted to deny it. More than anything, I wanted to deny the conclusion I had come to, this horrible fate of ours!

"I really love you, (My first name)-kun. Thank you for everything you have done for me."

Those were the last words I will have ever heard from her. When I looked at the place where she had been at, there was no one there.

"How cruel…" Those are the only words Yuzuru can mutters.

"I agree with you, it is much worse than I thought. To think that the reason for their separation lies in their love itself, it is just too much for any ordinary person to withstand," Haruka who has been quite calm all this time has no choice but to agree with a less than composed look.

She surely at least feels irritated a little. It is a rare sight.

"…" Yuzuru just nods. Right now he was so disoriented that he can't mutter even another word.

"However…" Haruka begins again.

"This is very similar to another story I have heard. The boy who gave his heart away at the moment of his death to save another person's life and the girl who had received that heart but in the end wasn't able to be with the person she loved purely because of her gratitude towards her heart donor…"

She pauses a little, taking a little glance at Yuzuru in the process.

Yuzuru's face right now is too ugly to look at. It is getting worse and worse since Haruka started her speech.

"…You won't break right, Otonashi-san?" She simply asks that question.

"…"

Yuzuru is not able to answer. He just stares intently at the texts on the screen as if to dig a hole in it.

After a long while of silence, he finally opens his mouth.

"…Don't worry about it, Saigusa-san, I'm fine."

That is his answer.

For the sake of other souls who come to this world, he won't break.

For the sake of his past comrades, he won't ever give up helping other people who are just like them.

For the sake of his love one, he won't abandon this duty.

So that is the answer.

"Yes, I won't break."

Yuzuru mutters weakly. His words are more like words to convince himself rather than Haruka. But despite that, the strong conviction behind those words does not seem fake at all.

'Kanade, are you still doing well on the other side? As for me, don't worry, I will never stop doing this duty, despite the fact that there aren't you in it,' Yuzuru smiles as he thinks about his beloved again.

Yes, he thinks to that clumsy angel of his.

Yuzuru turns to Haruka with resolution in his eyes and says the words again, "I won't ever break, Saigusa-san!"

-o-O-o-

"Still, to think that the programmer is so secretive that he wouldn't even reveal his name or the name of the girl, even death won't cure one's characters, I guess. What with that "(My first name)-kun" anyway?" Haruka groans

It has been a while since they decided to take a break. Now their states of minds are more or less normal so they can make a light conversation like this.

"I agree. He even left a note just for the sake of explaining it too, what a mysterious guy."

"So are you alright now, Otonashi-san?" Haruka kindly asks (She is being kind?! That rarely happens!)

It is not surprising that Haruka would worry about Yuzuru. From the stories she has known so far, his and the programmar's stories are almost the same after all.

"I'm okay, Saigusa-san, thanks for your concern," Yuzuru casually replies.

"Is this the time for me to say "It's not like I am worried about you or anything!" like some Tsundere?" Haruka jokingly says.

"…If you want to," Yuzuru replies, deadpan.

Ok, now that they finished taking a rest, time to go back to the texts!

-o-O-o-

My life has changed since that day.

I still help other souls move on, but I do not feel as eager anymore.

What right do these fellows have to be happy while I am not?

Well, the above sentence is what I have begun to think. Honestly, it scares me.

But anyway, life without her sure is boring.

Apart from helping other souls move on, I began researching on things to distract myself from thinking about her. I worked so much that there was no free time at all. Well, that was what I wished.

That was when I stumbled upon important information.

I will not tell you how I gained this information nor why I believed it since the process would be too long.

Just think that when you live for a long time, information just come to you to know little by little.

In short, this program, The Angel Player, is cursed. It gives you great power in exchange for loneliness of the user. The reason why I lost her is also because of this program. The reason why I wasn't able to move on with her is this program!

So, users of The Angel Player, I suggest you not to involve yourselves into this program anymore, it brings nothing but loneliness for you, it is cursed!

I am not able to exclude myself from it even now because I am its creator! But you have all the chances in the world! Stop yourselves from involving with it and move on! Or alternatively, if you are confident in the 3 abilities you have that I mentioned at the very start of these texts, then you are welcome to try it and help me remove this curse from the program!

My last wish is for someone to remove this curse (and possibly this program) from existence! As for now, I decide to turn myself into an AI and forget everything. I cannot stand the loneliness anymore! I will be an AI in this world and wait until the curse is removed.

Last but not least, you are not obliged to remove the curse; it is so dangerous that you are better off just stop using it. But if you can, then by all means please remove it and truly release me from this loneliness!

I hope luck is with you whatever your decision is, my dear friends with inquisitive minds. As for now, it is time for us to say goodbye. Once again, good luck!

"What does it mean?! The Angel Player is cursed?!" Yuzuru says, alarmed.

"I won't stop using it, Otonashi-san." Haruka casually states.

"!" Yuzuru is shocked.

"Did you not read what was written here, Saigusa-san? It is cursed! CURSED!" Yuzuru shouts.

"I know full well what it means, Otonashi-san," Haruka speaks flatly.

"Then why?!"

"After weighing pros and cons, I decide to continue using it, that's all. Besides…"

"Besides?" Yuzuru urges her to continue.

"…Loneliness is nothing new for me who had been alone almost my whole life," she speaks casually as if she is talking about today's weather.

"You…" Yuzuru is gobsmacked by her words.

While Yuzuru is stunted, Haruka continues.

"Instead, please be wary of the ring, it may also be a cursed item considered how strange it is. I guess that is the only related information we gain this time from reading all this. We should think of a way to get rid of it soon."

"…" Yuzuru remains silent

"Well then, I will take my leave for now," Saying that, Haruka leaves the room.

-o-O-o-

'How blasphemy… To think of the ring the lord himself gave a cursed item?! What level of foolishness is this?! the servant is furious.

"Calm down, my loyal servant, they just make assumptions based on the information they know; there is nothing blasphemy about it," the sacred voice tries to calm his servant down.

"But still…" the servant tries to protest.

"Say no more words. This is my decision. For me to entertain myself I give them permission to do all they can do no matter how foolish or blasphemy it is. Well, it is not like I have the permission to give to them though," the lord says, a little amused.

"As you wished my lord…" the servant meekly bows his head.

"Well then, please show me that you are not like that programmer of the past and achieve your reunion with the one you love, Otonashi Yuzuru."

The amusement for this divine being is still continuing.

Done!

Are you surprise or not? These are my takes on the settings!

If there are any inconsistency (plot holes), please do tell me in review or private message, so I can try to fix it. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

As you can see, there are a lot of things I still didn't reveal such as the reason why the programmer had the power to create the Afterlife or why he couldn't leave the Afterlife. I will explain most of them as the story progress. But for now, feels free to make various theories on it and don't forget to let me know them in review or PM!

Next chapter we will see the progress on Kanade's side again.

I hope you are looking forward to it.
