Renette's First Date?!
The weekend had approached sooner than expected and Tamaki had one long standing thought it his mind. He was bored. The antics around his mansion were becoming routine as he shuffled around in his bunny slippers. The air had become crisp and autumn was nearing it's head slowly and surely but he didn't feel festive in the slightest.
Tamaki flipped through his contacts on his phone and mentally went through them in his head. He could very well call up Kyoya but that thought was slowly erased when Tamaki remembered he was attending a family meeting for a new company.
The next idea was of course Haruhi but he didn't have the faintest clue where she lived. It seemed she didn't want to tell him for some reason.
Moving to push the down button on his phone, the king froze when Hikaru and Kaoru's number popped up. Yes they were devils but they also had something going on that was interesting. After some debating, Tamaki decided he would go visit the twins.
` Trying the number a few times, he was surprised to find them not answering but that wasn't highly unusual. The king supposed that he would just have to go to their house instead.
Once arrived at the twins mansion, Tamaki walked up the gigantic marble steps into the entryway and began knocking on the door. "Hello? It's your marvelous King here to grace your presence! Hikaru, Kaoru, I know you're in there!"
Oddly, there was no answer. Not even the servants came when he requested. So instead of leaving like any normal person, he decided to bang harder. "Hikaru, Karou! I know you're in there! You can't ignore your King! Come on you two!"
Suddenly, the door did swing open, almost too quickly as it hit the side of the frame with a loud sound, almost like someone was annoyed.
And someone was indeed annoyed as Tamaki came face to face not with the twins, but rather Rennette.
She looked so sloppy with her hair in a messy bun and an large black ripped, pair of glasses hanging off her eyes. Gracing her body was a baggy grey sweatshirt and a pair of short black shorts with no shoes. She kind of looked like a commoner from fall away.
Renette's face was one of extreme annoyance as her brow frowned in anger, not realizing who was on the other side of the door before she answered. "Who the hell is banging so damn loud?! It's freaking 9AM. Jeezus!"
Though when their eyes met face to face Renette's expression fell to one of shock as she watched the king sputter on his words. "Souh? Figures it would be you."
Tamaki blinked a few times before trying to take everything in. "Wait, Renentte?! Why are you visiting the twins at this time of day?"
She just looked at him blankly before rolling her eyes. "I'm not visiting them, dumbass. I live here."
This information was something not known to Tamaki. He knew that they were very close but he never imagined that they would live together. He silently wondered if this meant more to the twins relationship with her then being just close friends.
The awkward silence hung in the air as Renette sighed in annoyance and put her hand on the door, ready to shut it in a moment. "Right, so are you gonna tell me why you are standing here at 9AM or can I go back to bed?"
Getting back to the topic at hand, Tamaki looked into the mansion but found on sight on the twins. Usually they were glued to each other. "I was just coming over to hang out Hikaru and Kaoru. Where are those little devils anyways?"
Renette ignored the little devils comment and just shrugged. "Sorry but you're out of luck Souh. They left for Dubai last night. Something about a family reunion or something."
Tamaki blinked a couple times in surprise and realized they had never mentioned something like that to him. "I never heard anything about them leaving."
She nodded her head and rolled her eyes once more. "Yeah, because they didn't want you following them all the way there. Like last time."
The King vaguely remembered the last trip he invited himself on with the twins. Maybe they did have a point.
Just then, Tamaki thought of something else. "Then why didn't you go with them?"
Renette just smirked at his comment but he couldn't help but notice something else in her eyes, something that looked like sadness. "I'm not family Souh."
Then just as the subject came up, she completely changed it and moved her hand to the door. "And now that we are done with this game of twenty questions, I'm going back to bed. Goodbye."
The door began to shut but not before Tamaki jammed his foot into it, pleading. "Wait! Can't you just let me in for a couple minutes? I won't bother you I promise!"
Renette could hardly believe that statement and scoffed. "No way. Go back to your mansion or whatever. I don't have time to play games today."
Then suddenly the King's face turned into one of a sad puppy as he shuffled off the steps. "Okay fine. I guess I'll go back to that very empty and lonely estate. With only the cold night air for company. I'll let you be as I go off, alone."
He tiptoed off the landing and Renette looked at him with a blank expression. Did he really think that would work on her? He was acting like a little child trying to get a cookie.
Tamaki then dramatically fell to the ground and cried. "It's alright, don't worry about me! I am only a sad lonely boy who earns the company of another. But alas! I can't not find it anywhere."
She looked at the display at sighed heavily. He could very well be at this all day if she didn't comply. "Fine Souh. You can stay. But only for a few minutes! Then you are going right back so I don't have to deal with you."
He immediately perked up and practically ran inside like a small dog. The King bounced with excitement as Renette grumbed from the headache she was already getting.
Shutting the door behind her, she watched Tamaki run around the house almost like he had never seen it before, gazing at certain paintings and such.
Renette rubbed the back of her head at pushed her glasses up from her face. "Right, so you stay here and I'm going to make some breakfast."
But of course, he didn't listen and instead followed her into the kitchen. "Wait. I thought you were going back to bed?"
She just grumbled under her breath and sighed. "Well I could've but now I don't think it would make a difference with your annoyingly loud voice, so just forget it."
He watched her take out a large box of cereal and dumped it into her bowl before grabbing the milk. "Where are all the staff? Usually people make my breakfast for me."
Renette ticked her brow in anger but slowly told herself it wasn't worth it. "All the staff went to help the Hiitachan family. It's fine, I mean I'm used to it. Before Ouran I lived in a dormitory so making my own food wasn't that big of a deal."
Tamaki gasped at his and leaned forward. "You mean you lived like a commoner?! Ahh I would love that!"
She couldn't help but smirk at his comment and replied back. "Yeah I guess so. I mean, they did have prepared food in the cafeteria but I never went there. Tried to avoid that place to be honest."
The King then squinted his eyes in question. "Why not?"
Renette paused pouring her cereal and remained silent, almost like that question had caught a nerve with her. Then suddenly she reached under the counter and pulled another bowl out and placed it in front of him. "Since I know you are gonna ask me for some and then I will be left with nothing, take a bowl."
The quick transition was not lost on Tamaki as he looked at the bowl and tried to caught up with the conversation. "Oh uhh thank you."
Rennette just nodded her head as they eat in silence. The air was definitely awkward. Usually he had at least the twins to bounce a conversation off of each other but here he was lost. So instead, he tried a new conversation. "Hey so I heard there was this new commoner food place that just opened up and I was going to ask Hikaru and Karou to come with me but since they are not here…"
Before he could even finish his sentence Renette put her hand up and shut him down. "No, I don't think so Souh. I don't have time to go to a commoners shop right now.
Tamaki reached his hands out in exasperation. "Like what, sleeping?"
Rennette stood out of her seat and answered. "Yes! Something you are ruining for me right now!."
He narrowed his eyes and also stood up from his chair and dramatically sigh. "Well I suppose I have to find someone else to go with me then. Before I leave could lend me one of your french books? I've been longing to read one again."
Renette looked in the direction of her room and sighed once more. "Fine. If it will make you leave sooner."
Renette led Tamaki to her door and slightly pushed it open before stepping inside in a huff. The faster this idot left the better.
Tamaki stepped further and upon inspection found her room to be quite plain. There wasn't anything of hers really besides a laptop in the center of her bed and a couple boxes in the corner. It was certainly strange.
She ruffled in one of the boxes as her took note of her bed. It wasn't untidy or unmade but instead it looked like it had been that way for hours. This didn't line up with the story that she had just woken up at all. After that, Tamaki got suspicious. "Hey Renette? I thought you wanted to go to bed. Why is it that your sheets are all made up then?"
Renette scoffed and threw a book at his face before shuttering, something he had never seen before. "Wow, you really need to stop stalking people Souh. That could get you arrested. Let's just go back down stairs and…"
Suddenly Renette froze when Tamaki noticed something in the corner of the room. It looked to be a brown paper bag of some sort. She as she raced towards the object and quickly and kicked it in the closet before closing the door. "Uhh, it was a bug. A big bug."
Tamaki didn't believe her story one bit as he stood from the bed he was resting on. "What are you hiding from me Renette?"
She laughed nervously and put her hands out. "Wow you sure are paranoid Souh. I just saved you from a gigantic bug."
He ignored her comment and headed straight for the closet, pretending not to hear her cries of protest. But as he opened the double doors, something fell out that he thought he would never see.
There on the floor was an empty bag from what looked like a commoners fast food restaurant, with a paper stuck inside of it that had the same exact place he wanted to visit today, circled in red ink.
Renette looked at him in question and tried to come up with a convincing argument. "Uhh.. It's Hikaru's?"
Tamaki picked up the piece of paper and turned to her in question. "Renette, you like commoners food?"
Rubbing the back of her head she tried to play it off but it only turned even messier. "Uhh pfft no of course not. Why would I ever go to someplace like that? I mean seriously…"
Then she hung her head in shame and cried out. "Fine! Yes, okay? I wanted to go but then you showed up and I couldn't get you to leave me alone. I got up really early to so I could be one of the first customers but you wouldn't stop talking."
Tamaki stood there is shock and slowly connected the dots. That's why she wanted him out of there so quickly, why she looked like a commoner, and why she had woken up super early. It all made sense. He couldn't help but begin to laugh at the thought and Renette flushed with embarrassment.
She pushed her glasses up and crossed her arms. "Yeah, I know it's weird okay? That's why I wanted you out."
The King stopped laughing at backtracked, not realizing he had hurt her feelings. "No, it's not weird at all. Sorry for laughing, I just thought you reminded me of myself for a moment."
Rentte made a face of disgust and put her arms out. "Oh god, please no. Anything but that."
Tamaki just smiled at her face and put his hand out to her in question. "So how about it Renette? You want to go?"
She felt her face just warm with embarrassment while gazing at his hand. "Ahh fine. But only because this has been on my calendar for a month now. Also you can't tell anyone about this, ever."
All Tamaki could do was nod her head once as he reached out a grabbed her hand, before pulling her out the door. "Deal."
They reached the shop in no time at all to be met with a huge line. Renette turned to Tamaki as if to say I told you so as they waited what seemed like hours to enter the shop.
Once they had got their burgers, Renette found them a small table in the corner and they sat down. Tamaki was practically beaming from head to toe. "Whoa! Renette, check this out! These chairs spin. That's amazing."
She couldn't help but smile had his childhood wonder and shoved the burger in his direction. "Yeah yeah spinning chairs are the future and everything. Just shut up and take your burger."
He complied and grabbed it from her hands before smiling. "You know, this is kind of like a date isn't it?"
Renette's face began to blush heavily as she coughed a few times. "Yeah right. You wish this was a date Souh. Quit saying such idiotic things and eat your food.
He listened but not before smiling under his breath about how flustered she was at his statement. It was kinda cute.
Tamaki then tried to change the subject and starting questioning. "So Renette, why did you hide this, you know, about liking commoner food. Do the twins know?"
She put her hand up to stop him and answered. "One question at a time Souh. And I don't know, I have this kind of exterior I don't like to break most of the time. I would hate everyone at school to think I was like you. Also yeah they know."
The last words "like you" in her sentence made her shiver a little bit at the thought. She didn't want to be compared to him because that meant she was soft, gullible and a child. There was no way she would be so open with that side of her.
Tamaki ignored the insult and tried to go into another topic. "Is that why you lie so much? To keep that kind of exterior?"
Renette froze and looked down at her food before sighing. "I don't know what you're talking about Souh. I don't lie."
He narrowed his eyes and pointed to the glasses on her face. "Then what about those glasses?"
She turned her head in question and answered. "They are just for reading. I don't wear real glasses."
Realizing he had her right where he wanted her, he dug deeper. "Yet that day when you fell on those paint cans, you claimed your contact fell out. Even though, the twins told me you don't wear contacts."
Renette's eyes widened as she knew he had caught her. He may have been an idiot but he certainly was good at reading people.
He watched her take a breath and put down her have eaten burger. "What do you want me to say Souh?"
Tamaki leaned forward and lowered his voice. "Why, why did you lie? You were crying that day, weren't you?"
She looked down in apprehension and lowered her own voice. "It just brought up some unhappy memories for me at that time, okay? Things I'd rather forget. Can we drop it, please?"
Her words made Tamaki think even further. What did she mean when she said unhappy memories. Had something like that happened before? He certainly hoped not but wasn't seeing another option.
Respecting her wishes, he stopped the conversation and went onto something else entirely. "Right, so as I was saying about these spinning chairs…"
Renette listened to him drone on about the decor which she was silently thankful about. That conversation was getting a little too close for comfort. She smiled at his antics and focused on her food.
Unknown to them, a couple of Ouran students walked past the window to find Tamaki with some mysterious girl in a commoner restaurant. They couldn't see her face very clearly but what they did notice was both of them having a smile plastered onto each of their faces. The girl seethed with anger as they stomped away, eager to share the news.
After the meal, Tamaki walked Renette back to the mansion and they almost reached the gate when she turned to him. "Looks like I should head back. Thanks I guess for the food."
Tamaki watched her for a moment before smiling joyfully. "No problem! That's what friends are for after all!"
Renette stopped her movement at his words and turned her head in question. "We're friends?"
He nodded his head once before grabbing her arms around her shoulder, much to Renette's annoyance. "Of course we are silly!"
She just shoved his arm off of her's and scoffed at the assumption. "Yeah I don't think so Souh. I don't have friends."
The King tried to process those words as he waited for her to laugh as if saying it was a joke. Once he saw no change in her expression he realized she was serious. "What? Come on Renette of course you do. You have Hikaru and Karou."
Renette narrowed her eyes and answered plainly. "Hikaru and Karou aren't friends. They are two people that are obligated to care for me because of our pity me."
Tamaki's eyes widened at the way she saw the twins. He always thought they were inseparable, almost like a long lost sibling but hearing this, he started to rethink that theory. "That's not how they feel at all. I know they think of you as like a sister."
She just smiled bitterly at his definition and replied. "How would you know? And I'm not their sister. I'm not family Souh. I never was."
Tamaki thought back to the expression she made when he asked why she didn't go to Dubai with the twins and suddenly things started to become clearer.
Because of that, his face grew into a soft smile as he gazed at her with absolutely certainly. "Well, now you do have one, a friend that is."
Renette looked at his cheesy grin dumbfounded and just answered plainly. "And what if I say no?"
Just then, Tamaki raced forward and grabbed her hand before shaking it aggressively. "Too late! It's already official! Tamaki and Renette are best friends!"
Trying to pull her hand away, Rennette cried out in embarrassment. "Wait, what?! I never agreed to this!"
Tamaki just shook her hand tighter as she struggled. "You don't have to, it's forced friendship!"
Renette finally was able to pull her hand away as she shouted back. "That's not how that works!"
But before she could say anything, Tamaki was running down the street and away from the mansion shouting in a sing songy tone back. "Too late Renette. We are best friends. Tamaki and Rennete, best friends!"
As he left, Renette looked at her hand he just shook and grumbled to herself. What had she gotten herself into? She felt like she had suddenly opened a door she had not meant to and shivered at what that might mean.
Then she gazed in the direction he left in and sighed. Maybe it was possible. Maybe it was possible to have a friend again.
Just a small like something about the Tamaki X Renette friendship that's blooming. I love writing these two characters. They are such polar opposites yet share other similar traits in others
