The five year old put her face towards the glass, watching the scenery pass by her. This was her first time in Japan and the young girl was very excited to see where this adventure would take her.
Analiese , her mother, gently pushed her back against the seat. "Renette dear, it's not ladylike to sit like that."
Grumbling, the girl sat back down correctly, only for her father to smile. "Aw come on Ana, she's just excited. I would be too."
Her mother nodded her head and patted her the little girls head. "I know you are very excited but we have to be on our best behavior for the Hittachans. I hear they have two boys around your age, maybe you could be friends?"
Renette's eyes lit up at the sound of that word. "Yes! I would love to be friends."
Her parents giggled softly next to her, Adrien answering back. "Well there you have it. I'm sure you'll fit right in sweetie. I mean who couldn't love my daughter?"
Suddenly the car came to a stop and the driver opened the door for them to exit. "We have arrived."
Bouncing with joy, her mother helped her out of the car, only to be greeted by a set of unknown faces. "So lovely to see you again Analiese, Adrein. I hope the flight was alright."
Ana held her daughter's hand while answering happily. "No, it wasn't bad at all actually. It's always a pleasure to see you as well, Yuzuha."
Waving the woman off, the orange haired woman laughed. "Oh no need to be so formal. I wish my husband was here but unfortunately he's been taking some long shifts with the company. He'll be here tomorrow though.
They talked some more when the woman noticed the little girl plastered to her mother's side. "And this must be Renette. It's so nice to finally meet you."
Remembering the training she was taught, Renette dipped herself into a small curtsy. "Hello. It's nice to meet you too."
Yuzuha gushed at this. "Ahh she's so cute! I'm sure you will be great friends with my sons. Would you like to meet them?"
Renette nodded her head nervously and Yuzuha brought them inside of the estate before calling. "Hikaru, Karou, there is a guest here."
Two young boys appeared from the balcony and began descending the stairs. Renette's eyes widened realizing that they looked almost exactly the same in every way. They even had orange hair like her own.
They reached the steps, but still did not utter a word so their mother answered for them. "Here they are. Renette, I would like you to meet Hikaru and Karou. Boys, this is Renette. She will be staying with us for the summer."
The girl smiled and extended her hand although the boys didn't take it, only stared into space which made her slightly uncomfortable.
Yuzuha put a hand to her mouth in embarrassment. "Oh, I'm sorry. They are a bit shy. Let's leave them alone so they can probably introduce themselves. Ana, Adrien, there are some plans I would like to talk about anyways."
Her parents, nodded their heads, thinking that was a good idea and followed Yuzuha into a separate room. Now it was just the three of them.
Renette tried to lessen the tension by trying again, hoping to get a better response. "Hello, my name is Renette."
This time she did get a response, but it wasn't the one she wanted.
The boys looked between themselves, like they were sharing the same though and laughed at her. She didn't understand what it meant until one of them came forward. "Why are you even here?"
Renette was confused by this question. So she tried to answer it the best she could. "Well, ummm I was hoping we could be friends?"
Hikaru and Karou shared another look before bursting into laughter at her suggestion. 'Hey, you're funny. Why would you want to be friends with us? You don't even know us."
Tightening her fists at her sides, she replied. "I wanna know you though. That's why I thought…"
But Hikaru cut her off, taking a step forward in intimidation. "You thought? Well, let us make it easy for you. We don't want you. As if we'd ever allow you to be friends with us."
The boys words were so hateful, his eyes having no other emotion other than boredom. Renette didn't know what she did to these two to have them hate her so much. She didn't even know how to answer.
So Karou answered for her, leaning on Hikaru's shoulder. "Aw come on Hikaru, that's not fair. We should at least give her a chance to be our friend."
Hikaru stopped for a moment before letting his face come into a wide smirk. "Oh yeah, you're right Karou, how silly of me."
They strolled onto either side of her, speaking into her ear softly. "If you can tell us which one is Hikaru, then we'll let you be our friend. If not, then you'll be our toy."
Renette looked nervously back and forth to the boys, not knowing what she should do. They were so close, it was kind of scary.
Karou noticed her being uncomfortable and coaxed her some more. "Come on, you wanted to friends, right? We are giving you a chance."
She did want to be friends with them, so much so that she lifted her finger up and pointed to the twin on the right. "You?"
The twins looked between each other, realizing she was indeed right, although they would never let her know that.
In one swift motion, they took their hands and pushed her to the ground, her body falling onto the hard floor.
Wincing, she looked up only to find them standing over her. "Wrong. Looks like this summer will be fun, toy."
They towered over her in an absolute display of power, looking amused at the game that was just beginning.
Everyday for Renette after that was constant repeat of pranks and jokes throughout the entire summer. They did everything from covering her doorways with saran wrap to feeding her toothpaste oreos unknowingly as well and laughing at everything she did.
At the end of the break, when it was time to return home they thought they had won, that she would never come back after all they did, planned on it even.
But when she turned to leave, they were surprised when Renette bowed politely, a smile upon her face. "See you next summer, Hikaru and Karou."
The twins were utterly confused by this fact. They had purposely made her life a living hell so that she would get the hint to leave them alone. Maybe she was too stupid too figure that out?
So, they tried again. The next summer was even worse for her as they upped their game, pulling even harsher pranks but even so, she only smiled. It seemed like nothing could affect the poor girl. It was frustrating.
This continued until the fourth summer with them. They were both nine now as she descended the steps towards the estate. "Good to see you again, Hikaru, Karou."
They crossed their arms in annoyance, Hikaru scoffing. "I hope you're ready for this summer, Wormwood."
She pulled her suitcase along, smiling softly, not saying a word in response. She was always like this, just silently going along with them.
There was the smile again, the twins hated it. It showed that she was not shaken by anything they had done. Renette was their greatest challenge yet, and they wouldn't stop until they could break her.
Opening the door, she gasped when a bucket of ice cold water fell on top of her, drentching her body from head to toe. Shivering slightly at the air, the twins laughed. "Look at you, so pathetic. Welcome back toy."
She stared at the floor for a couple moments before straightening herself up, turning to them with such a calm expression. "That was a good one Hikaru."
Hikaru tightened his fists together in absolute anger. They didn't know why but she was able to tell the two them apart so easier and they didn't like it. It's like she wasn't even trying.
Growling under his breath, Hikaru moved up and pushed the girl against the wall. "What is your problem?"
She stood shocked for a moment before looking away silently. He hated her silence even more. "You are so annoying! Could you stop smiling like an idiot for once?!"
They were only a couple inches away from each other and Hikaru could see the fear in the corner of her eyes, wondering what he was going to do. Well, it was a start. "Do you wanna run back to your mommy and daddy? Course I don't understand why anyone would want you around."
Renette stared at him some more before shaking her head, still not breaking. "No, I want to stay."
Muttering to himself, Hikaru had enough of this girl and pushed her to the ground, letting her body smack against the titles. "You really are an idiot. I hate weak girls like you the most. Never getting upset or angry, it's so boring."
Karou heard footsteps enter the hallway and tried to pull his brother away, afraid of getting in trouble. "Hikaru, let's just go. It's not like she's going to say anything."
Hikaru clicked his teeth in anger before withdrawing and leaving the girl alone, but not before hissing. "You better watch yourself this summer."
They left just before one of the maids turned the corner, seeing the poor girl up against the wall. "Oh, Miss Lightwood, are you alright?"
Running over to her, the kind lady brushed off her clothes that were soaked and turned her brow into a frown. "Those boys, they really need to stop picking on you. Come, we'll get you dried off."
The maid grabbed the girls hand and began to pull her away when she spoke quietly. "They don't mean it.."
This caused the maid to stop. She knew those two boys since they were born, and they always meant what they did. "I'm sorry?"
But Renette just looked softly in the direction they went. "They were just having fun. I just have to try harder, to be their friend."
Her eyes were filled with such determination. This poor girl, even though those boys were trying so hard to reject her, she was still trying to be friends. The maid did admire her dedication through it all. She was so innocent.
Bringing her a towel to wipe herself off, the maid nodded her head. "Well if anyone can break those two out of their shells, it's you Miss Lightwood. Now, if you will excuse me, I have to start preparing on the young masters birthday cake for the next couple days."
At the word cake, Renette's eyes lit up. "Can I help?"
The woman looked a bit put off by this. "But Miss Lightwood, a lady such as yourself shouldn't have to do such things."
But the little girl just wrapped her hands around the maid's uniform, giving her best puppy dog face. "Pleaseeee? I wanna do something for them. I wanna give them a present so we can be friends."
It was hard to ignore her face and soon enough, the woman sighed loudly. "Alright, but don't tell anyone. It will be our little secret."
Renette jumped forward in excitement, following the maid down the hall and into the kitchen to prepare the cake. All she could think about was how excited and happy they would look after seeing her creation. This would do it for sure. After this, she was sure they would be friends.
Oh how wrong she turned out to be
About a day or so later, the twins were walking the hallways when they heard the sound echos of a violin and piano through one of the rooms. They sounded so joyful and calm, carrying throughout the entire household.
Curiosity got the best of them and they peaked through the doorway only to find Renette playing with a small music stand behind her.
Her mother was seated at the piano helping the girl along while her father was listening with his eyes closed. It was like an ideal scene of a perfect family, and they hated it.
Stopping playing, Renette sighed loudly. "This part is really hard."
Her mother rose from the seat and looked over the girls shoulder, smiling. "Don't give up sweetie. You just have to put your entire heart into it. That's how you will reach those judges."
Renette turned one of the music sheets in her hand and frowned. "I just want to make you proud."
Almost looking offended, her mother gasped playfully. "What are you talking about? You always make me proud, and your father too, right?"
Opening his eyes, Adrien smiled. "Of course, and if those judges don't pick you then that's their loss. You music is always beautiful."
He picked up Renette and spun her around playfully before sitting her next to her mother at the piano. Pressing a hand to the key, her mom spoke. "Now Renette, it isn't all about precision, it's about emotion. Think about how you want your music to sound, what emotions you are feeling. If you stay stuck on the technique then your violin will be sad. You want it to be happy, like this piano."
Her mother played a small medley on the piano before replying. "See? This is what it sounds like when I think of you and your father. It's practically bouncing with joy, isn't it?"
Renette nodded her head in understanding while the twins just seemed even more annoyed, Hikaru whispering quietly. "What is up with them? It's sickening…"
Karou also agreed with his statement. She was so overjoyed with parents in this moment. Didn't she know that they would never have a moment like that. "Yeah, it's like she's bragging about how good her life is."
Hikaru scoffed and rested a hand on the frame before watching the scene before them. Their parents were always away on business and vacations. It seemed they never had time together. So why was this little girl so special? He hated seeing what he would never have.
Renette turned her face and spotted them from the corner of her vision, now smiling in their direction. "Hikaru, Karou! Come see the new song I just learned!"
But their reaction wasn't one of joy, just disgust. In one motion they turned their backs on her and grumbled back sarcastically. "No thanks."
She watched them leave and her eyes fell a tiny bit, her parents also taking notice. "Did you get into an argument with them?"
Shaking her head, she knew not to involve them in this. This was a problem she wanted to solve herself. "It's okay. I have a surprise for them tomorrow that will make them happy. I just know it."
Soon it was time for the twins birthday and Renette bounced happily as she carried her cake outside to surprise them. She had worked days on this and knew that somehow it would draw them closer together.
Opening the door to the garden, she found them sitting by their favorite tree, playing a mobile game of some sort. So basically it was normal behavior for them.
She placed the small object behind her back and hurried over to them, waving. "Hikaru, Karou!"
They turned their heads and internally groaned at her. "Ugh, why is she here?"
Hikaru just shrugged but also looked displeased. All they wanted was one day away from her perfect little life. He supposed that wasn't possible.
When Renette caught up with them, she shouted happily. "Happy birthday you two!"
They looked between each other, Karou answering first. "What are you doing here?"
Hikaru added. "Yeah, we want to be left alone. So go away."
Her face fell a little but tried to keep the same level of excitement as before. "Right, so I know things have been a little rocky between us and we haven't really seen eye to eye but I wanted to do something for you two since we're friends and all…."
A couple phrases stuck out in their minds but the one that was most apparent was the word "friend". It was rather funny to them, especially Hikaru. "What makes you think were friends?"
But Renette didn't seemed phased. "Well we play around a lot and pull jokes on each other. Although it's not my favorite thing I know it's just for fun…"
Hkaru and Karou were utterly stunned by her stupidity. She thought all of those pranks were in good fun? This girl really was blinded by her perfect life.
Not noticing the tension, she pulled the object from her back and smiled at the creation. "That's why I wanted to make you this to show our friendship. Happy birthday!"
Looking down the twins realized it to be a cake, decorated with white frosting and little designs on the top. It was sloppy and unclean but they could still make out the words "Happy Birthday Hikaru and Kaoru" on the top with three little stick figures holding hands. They seemed to represent the twins with her sandwiched in her middle.
The more they looked at the cake, they angrier they became. They had never once received a handmade cake from their parents or family before. It was always either something mailed in from somewhere or something a no name maid would have done. How dare she try and mock them with something they would never experience
The silence was long and she started to feel uncomfortable with the air around them. "Um, Hikaru, Karou?"
This snapped them back into reality, realizing that this girl would never get the hint they didn't want her. Instead, they would have to show her.
Bringing his face into a frown, Hikaru spoke first. "Are you really that much of an idiot?"
Karou noticed the tone and matched it. "I can't believe you really think we are friends."
Renette obviously didn't get the joke. "I'm sorry?"
But they just smiled, circling around her like usual, Hikaru replaying. "It seems you are too stupid to realize this yourself so we will say it straight We have never thought of you as a friend, only has something to play around with.."
She seemed still so Karou continued. "Did you really think we would even want someone like you to hang around us? You're so annoying."
Picking up the cake she was holding, Hikaru smiled darkly. "Yeah, here is the truth. We don't want you, we never did. You think you can come into our lives and just become the best of friends? Well it doesn't work that way. Not everything can fit into your cookie cutter world. All we need is each other, not you. We never wanted you."
Stuttering in her words, she saw for the first time all of the malice and anger towards her. Did they really not like her? Was it really all a game? "I don't understand...Hikaru...Karou...I."
She reached her hands out to them only to pull back, like she was poison. "Ugh seriously? Here is something that will make you understand then."
Hikaru then smiled and smashed the cake she had put hours of hard work into, right on top of her head. The frosting poured from her now caked hair as she just stood frozen. It was true, wasn't it? They really hated her.
The twins took one look and laughed hysterically at the display, making fun of her all at the same time. "Now do you get it?"
Bringing a shaky hand up to her face, she felt tears well up into her eyes. "Why…?"
But they just crossed their arms around their chest, smiling proudly at their work. "Why? Because it's fun. You are just a toy, so get used to it Woomword. You are the one that will never matter, the other twin."
Realizing they had gotten their point across, they left her alone as the tears poured down her face. She just wanted to be friends with them, why did they hate her so much?
She didn't understand.
After that day, Renette got the memo from the twins and tried not bother them, instead focusing on her violin competitions for her mother. Maybe if she showed them the emotions in her playing, then they would come around and be a bit more kind hearted.
Years had past and she was now eleven, looking at various upcoming competitions in the local paper. She needed something to distract her, something for her to focus on while she stayed at the Hittachin estate.
There was one in particular happening at the Lobelia Girls Academy in the next couple days which meant that the twins would appear probably. They would get to hear her music if she played there.
Running up to her mother, she showed her the paper, now circled with red ink. "Mom, look! There is a competition in a couple days at Lobelia. Can we go, please?"
She took the paper from her daughter, her face coming into a frown. "Oh sweetie. I wish we could but that's the same day as our stock meeting. The times are so close together I don't think we'd make it."
Renette knew that was logical but she couldn't help but push for this. They were scheduled to return back to France in a couple days so this was the one chance to impress them. "I know mom but we are leaving soon and I really wanted to show Hikaru and Karou what I learned before I go back for the year."
Her mother looked at her daughter in dismay when Adrien spoke behind her. "Ahh what's the big deal Ana? She's proud and wants to play for her friends. Isn't there anyway you could work around it?"
Renette saw the opportunity and took it, practically pleading towards the woman. "Pleaseeeeee?"
Thinking for a moment, her mother sighed deeply, giving up. "Well, I suppose if I head over right after the meeting then we will be able to make it. You'll just have to meet me there and set up a backup just in case there's traffic."
Renette's eyes lit up at her words and raced forward, hugging the life out of her mother. "Ahh thank you, thank you, thank you mom! You're the best! I'm gonna go practice!"
When she reached the venue, she was disappointed but not surprised that her parents hadn't arrived yet. The traffic must of been really bad.
The announcer appeared from the wings and pointed to Renette. "Number 21: Renette Lightwood please."
Breathing a heavy breath, Renette stepped onto the stage without her mother and played the best she could.
She thought about the twins and how they might be listening right now. All she wanted was to reach them, if only once.
When the song ended, the audience clapped wildly and Renette bowed, looking out and smiling. She loved being on the stage. It made her feel such joy.
Stepping towards the edge though, she was surprised to see a group of people gather around. It almost looked like they were waiting for her. "Can I help you?"
The crowd looked between each other, figuring out who would speak first. It seemed the man in the middle lost the battle, stepping forward in anxiety. "Are you Miss Lightwood?"
Nodding her head, the man took off his hat, a shake now if his voice. "I'm so terribly sorry to tell you this but we need you to come right away.."
Feeling the air around her, Renette herself was becoming rather frightened at the tone he was using. "What is it?"
A silence hung for a moment before he answered back. "There was an accident. Your mother, she didn't make it."
Renette felt the world around her slow as she lost feeling in her entire body. The violin she was holding slipped out of her grip and cracked on the floor into a thousand pieces. It couldn't be. She had just seen her this morning, laughing and singing like she usually did.
She couldn't be gone.
That night, the twins heard the news through one of the maids and were now sitting in their rooms, staring out the window while Hikaru was focusing on his game. The reality was something unbelievable but it didn't really concern them since they weren't family. That girl must be a wreck though.
Suddenly, they heard a soft knock on the outside of their door and widened their eyes at who exactly was on the other side. "H-Hikaru, K-arou? Are you there?"
They didn't make any move but listened to her voice through the wood. She sounded so small, so fragile. "Hey, I know you hate me but I really need someone right now."
There was silence for another moment until the voice returned. "I shouldn't have forced her to go to that competition. I guess now I understand what you were saying. I really am an idiot. It's my fault...It's all my fault ..."
The twins heard her quick breaths and a soft sound which kinda sounded like she had slid onto the floor in the hallway, leaning against the object now. "Just for a minute, could you open the door? We don't have to be friends or anything. Just, for a minute...I need...someone.."
Karou raised from his seat but Hikaru grabbed his arm and shook his head, silently telling him to act like they weren't here. As horrible as it was, they both thought that she deserved it at the time. Now her life wasn't perfect. She was just like them.
They really hated that they thought that back then.
They listened for about an hour before they heard her pick herself up and stumble away from their door. It seemed like she had given up for now.
But they couldn't deny the heavy feeling in their chest, like they had just done something wrong.
Their last interaction with her was about a week later. The twins were sitting by that same place on the window as the slow knock echoed through the space once more.
Her voice carried stronger then it was a week ago. "Hey again. It's just me. I wanted to say goodbye to you two."
Goodbye? That was something they weren't expecting.
Renette continued after a small pause. "It seems we are going back to France early. My father wants me to go to this new business academy now. So, I guess we won't be seeing each other anymore, just like you always wanted."
A longer silence echoed before she sighed. "You know, a long time ago I really wished we could be friends but now I see it was really useless. Whatever I did to cause you to hate me, I'm sorry. I'll stop trying now."
Hikaru and Karou looked between each other, that familiar heavy pit growing once again.
Then, she placed her hand on the cool wood and smiled sadly towards them. "Goodbye boys."
Her hand slowly slipped away and Hikaru and Karou looked towards the door although they never stood up to open it.
Back then they were so foolish. If only they had opened the door then they could've stopped everything that happened next. But they were too stupid, too prideful to help her.
They watched her put her suitcase in the car before turning towards the estate and smiling sadly.
The twins narrowed their eyes as she caught them in the window and just bowed respectfully before stepping inside the car.
And that was it. That was the last time they ever saw Renette with that much kindness and honesty. They let it slip away so easier, not knowing that they wouldn't ever get it back.
Renette stepped out the car at her new academy and breathed in an anxious amount of air. Although things didn't work out too well in Japan, she was hopeful that this place would be even better.
Entering through the doors though, she was immediately pushed around by incoming students that paid no notice to her and went tumbling to the ground, dropping her schedule as well.
Reaching to grab it, she stopped when a hand appeared out of nowhere and spoke. "Hey, are you okay? It's hard to get messed up is that crowd."
She turned at found a blonde haired boy smiling at her. "Are you new? I don't think I've seen you around before."
Seemingly entranced by his beauty, Renette broke herself out her illusion. "Uhh yeah. My name is Renette Lightwood. I just joined today, although I haven't gotten used to everything."
At her name, his lips curved up just slightly in a warm smile. "That's alright. It will just take time. Your name is very beautiful. It's nice to meet you. I'm Julien Cartwright, at your service, princess."
This boy was dazzling in more ways than one and at his lines she couldn't help but blush. "Oh uh, nice to meet you. Do you know where I can find classroom 21?"
His eyes lit up then. "Of course I do. What a coincidence, that's my room as well. I can lead you there if you'd like."
Renette nodded her head joyfully, picking up her bag and smiling. "Yes that would be wonderful. I'm still not used to this school."
Julien pointed his hand outward in the direction they were heading and couldn't help but hide a little smirk. "Oh don't worry. I'll be sure to help you as much as I can."
Julien and Renette became friends in a matter of weeks as he always seemed willing to help her with any problems she might of had at this new school. It was finally nice to have someone that didn't think of her as a toy, but rather as a person.
They were sitting together in the library, studying for the upcoming exams when he leaned forward to her. "Hey Renette, do you know the answer to this one?"
Putting a pencil to her lips, she thought. "Hmm isn't it y=2x+4xy?"
He thought for a moment before smiling widely. "Wow, you are truly something else."
Renette blushed slightly and shook her head. "No, I'm really not. I'm just average, like everyone else."
But Julien didn't seem happy about this, instead leaning forward and wiping a hair from her face lovely. When it was done, he fingers lingered there, tracing her cheeks slowly. "Don't sell yourself short. You really are amazing. I'm so glad to have met you, Renette."
Renette remained frozen, feeling the heat rise up in her cheek where his fingers were. She had never felt anything like it before.
Then she realized something. Did she like Julien? She did seem rather flustered with him but she'd also never been in love so it was hard to tell. He did make her heart beat fast though.
Although it seemed like Julien read her mind, as he himself seemed a little bit nervous. "You can say no to this but I think you're really pretty and I was wondering if you maybe wanted to go out to dinner tomorrow afterschool?"
She blinked in surprise at what he was suggesting? Was he asking her out. "Like, a date?"
He seemed even more flustered by that. "Yeah, well that is, if you wanted to?"
Renette thought for a moment before knowing her answer. "I would love too."
Julien sprung to life with joy, packing up his things happily. "Fantastic. We'll meet in the cafeteria and then head out from there, okay?"
She nodded her head and watched him leave, feeling the heart in her chest pound even more. Maybe this was it. Maybe she found someone that actually wanted her.
If only she knew the truth
Renette hurried to the cafeteria the next day, carefully pressing down her uniform to look as nice as possible. This was her first date, she wanted it to be perfect.
When she reached the area, it was oddly quiet although she didn't think much about it at the time, only seeing Julien standing in the middle. "You came."
She smiled and headed over, determined to tell him how she felt today. Renette had practiced in her mirror for hours last night on what she was going to say. "Before we leave, I have something I wanna say…"
He looked confused but she continued, playing with the ends of her skirt slowly. "I just wanted to thank you for helping me these past couple weeks. I would've been seriously lost without you. I guess during that time, I kind of fell for you a little bit, and when you asked me on this date I was so happy."
Julien eyed her confession before jumping off of the table and moving towards slowly. "Oh Renette, you are so innocent. I knew I had to help you the minute I saw you."
She looked confused at his statement, that is, until she felt it.
She stood frozen as a bag of flour rained down on her, covering her entire body in the powdery substance. "What…"
Juilen looked at the display and she watched his face goes from his usual princely attire to something way more sinister. "I can't believe you'd actually fall for me. I haven't planned that one. You really surprised me there Renette."
Not understanding what was happening, she looked around to find his friends circling her. "What's going on? J-Julien?"
Putting his hands out, Julien smiled. "Now don't look at me like that. I'm doing you a favor. You need to lose that innocent daddy's girl vibe or else you'll get eaten alive here. That's just business. I mean just look at you, right now you'd follow anyone if she treated you nicely, right? But this world is all about who you can step on first. The sooner you learn that, the better."
He then reached into his pocket and pulled out an egg, swirling it around in his hands. "You trust too easily. Now, we need to show you what happens when you make the wrong choice, so that you'll never make it again."
Turning to his friends, he nodded his head and immediately Renette felt herself being pelted with eggs, the goo sticking to her hair and already flour covered body.
The hits hurt as they reached the skin and she found herself hunching over, wishing for this humiliation to end. "S-Stop it. Please."
Although Julien didn't seem pleased. "You never grovel. You never ask to stop something, you must stop it yourself so you don't get stepped on in the future."
But Renette wasn't listening, feeling the shame bubble up in her throat. Why had she thought that she was more than just a toy? That was all she'd ever be.
Julien up his hand up at the actions stopped, now gazing upon Renette's messy display. "Have you learned your lesson? I am not your friend. I never was. I just used you to get what I wanted. That's how life is here."
She just looked broken and wilted on the ground and Julien knew it was slowly seeping in for her. "Good. Now, you need something so you can always remember our little chat."
Snapping his fingers, Julien's friends grasped onto her arms and pulled her up, holding her from moving. "W-What are you doing? Let me go!"
Taking a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket, Julien lit one and took a drag before stepping closer. "You'll thank me for this one day."
Then, he slightly lifted her shirt and pressed the end of the cigarette onto her bare skin, causing her to cry out in pain.
He pulled away when there was a mark and looked satisfied. "There. Now you will never forget our conversation."
His friends let go then and seemingly walked away with Julien, now leaving Renette alone on the cold floor, crying silently at what had just occurred.
Choosing to walk back to the estate instead of taking the car, Renette hugged her body, trying not to break down in the middle of the street.
When she reached the house, Renette pressed herself against the back of her door and covered her mouth, choking out a sob.
Sliding her body down to the floor, she wrapped her arms around her even tighter and longed for someone to comfort her from what had just occurred.
She always thought Julien was a good person, that he wouldn't have done something like that. Was their entire friendship a lie? Did he approach her with the sort intention of breaking her down? Because if it was, it worked.
Why was she always so foolish, so idiotic? It was just as the twins had always said when they were kids. She was too naive for the world around her, assuming they were close when in actuality they wanted nothing to do with her. They only wanted to use her for their own personal gain.
If her mother had been here she would have calmed her, if her father wasn't so busy trying to maintain the company then he would have reassured her, but they weren't there. She had no one.
Shakely taking out her phone, Renette flipped it open to her contacts at saw Hikaru and Karou's names dance across the screen, mocking her.
Her finger hovered over the call button, it shaking more than usual. If she called them right now, would they even care? What would they even say?
Laughing to herself, she knew they probably wouldn't even answer. They hated her after all, and now she pretty much understood why. They were right all along, she really was stupid.
She shut the phone again and a new emotion raged through her for the very first time. Why was the universe so unfair to her even when all had tried to do was help others? It made her angry.
How dare Julien humiliate her in front of the entire school to "teach her a lesson", thinking that she will be weak and just take it. How dare everyone in the entire world think that they can push her around for her entire life. No, not anymore.
Renette then found a new sense of emotion in her throat. It was hot and fiery, burning the insides as she bawled her fists tightly.
She wasn't going to let him, or anyone walk over her like that ever again.
The next day came quicker than expected and Renette walked into the hallways with absolute intent. Her mind was clouded with only one desire and he appeared shortly afterwards with his friends in tow.
They locked eyes and Julien smiled, his usual presence seeping through the halls and making all the girls swoon. But of course, she knew the truth now. "Ah Renette my friend, how are you today? I was worried you weren't going to make it."
A low growl escaped her lips, moving towards him without saying a single word. The atmosphere was enough to tell she wasn't happy.
Julien felt this, still having the eyes on him and standing back once in anxiety. "Hey, what are you doing? Are you feeling ill?"
Stepping even quicker, Renette squeezed her fists together before raising them up and punching Julien square across the face.
He tumbled to the ground in absolute surprise, making no move to fight back and only looking confused. "R-Renette, what is it…?"
She appeared on top of him in a second, punching him again and drawing blood. Everyone around could see absolute no emotion in her face, only intent. It was kind of scary.
Screams echoed around the area but the only thing Renette could focus on was her absolute rage for him and for everyone that ever pushed her around because they thought she was weak.
He seemed unconscious now but Renette didn't stop, that was until two teachers grabbed her from behind and physically pushed her away from the broken man.
Even still though, she kept fighting them, forcing to find a way back to the man who had broken her in the first place. This continued until she was dragged away from the scene and into the headmasters office.
As she started to regain her touch of reality, she remembered a couple things. One of them was her father bowing before the teachers and the headmaster, begging forgiveness for her actions and behavior.
Another was the headmaster angrily shouting at her father and telling her she was to be suspended for her actions.
But the one thing she remembered most was the absolute silence on the way back home. Her father didn't yell and her or anything, just lead her back into that car while he rushed back to a stock meeting. Apparently he left early for her and caused them to lose the upcoming deal with a possible investor.
She should've felt relieved but the only emotion Renette had at that time was shame.
Thinking back on her choices, she had never even thought about the pain and hardship her father would face because of it.
He already worked so hard and she had hurt him without even realizing it. It seemed even now, she was still an idiot. Her actions had changed nothing.
The accident with her mother was her fault and know she was pushing even more suffering onto her father. How could she have done such a thing?
A couple hours later she was sitting in her room when she saw her father's car pull up into the long driveway.
On further inspection he looked exhausted and tired, yawning as he descended the steps. He must of worked overtime because of the stunt she pulled earlier.
She wanted to apologize but didn't know how. She wanted to talk to him about what had happened but knew she'd only be telling him lies if she did. All of this was her fault.
There had to be something she could do for him that would stop making her an utter embarrassment to her father's name, there just had to be.
Then, she looked back to her school books which she had never really paid attention to before now and picked one up.
Suddenly, a lightbulb lit up in the back of her head and she had it.
Racing down the hallway, she paused at her father study before slowly opening the door. "Father, could I talk to you about something?"
He looked up from the papers he had been reading and Renette could notice the creases around his eyes. "Not now sweetie. I have to finish this draft for tomorrow. We'll talk later, okay?"
Playing with the ends of her uniform, she continued. "Aren't you going to saying something about school?"
He thought for a moment before sighing. "What would you like me to do, yell at you? You know I could never do that. Your mother was more skilled in that respect."
His eyes, they shone with a clear and utter disappointment in them. It would have been better if he did yell at her, because this, seemed far worse.
A heavy silence hung in the air before Renette stepped forward, a new kind of intent in her stance. "Father, I want to help you with the company.""
His entire face grew surprised, almost like he didn't know if he was joking or not. "Renette, you haven't ever been interested in the company. What are you talking about?"
But she didn't falter. "But you do so much for it, don't try and lie to me I know you are struggling. I can't play violin anymore so I thought that maybe…"
At her mention of the violin her father closed his eyes in pain, cutting her off. "Running an entire company isn't just about a passing thought Renette. It takes a lot of hard work and studying. This isn't a game."
She thought for a moment before stepping forward. "I know, I know it isn't a game but I want to help you. Please, I promise that I will study and take it seriously. I want to be like mom."
With her mothers name, Renette's father crumbled, thinking about the logistics. "I want to believe you sweetie but I can't mess around with something as important as this. Already you have made it difficult with the incident today. I'm sorry to be blunt but with your age and record hardly anyone will take you seriously, even if you are my daughter."
Nodding her head, Renette realized her father's point but knew she also couldn't back down from this. "Then, give me a test. Let me show you that I am serious about this."
Another silence entered before her father spoke, sighing in experasation. "I suppose I could give you a small share undercover and see what you do with that. But if you really want to do this then there will extensive training involved. You will have to be homeschooled along with your basic studies. It would be a lot."
He expected her to falter at all the work it would take but she then did, just instead bowing her head. "I understand. I will on that responsibility and show you that I can help you."
With her response, there was nothing he could do then give in. "Alright then. Your lessons will start tomorrow then."
She smiled under her breath and bowed once more, heading towards the door. "Thank you father. You will not be disappointed in me.""
As Renette closed the door, she breathed out a breath she had been holding and remembered the words she had just told him.
No, you will not be disappointed in me anymore.
Renette kept her promise and studied excessively during her suspension, learning all about business and how she could further the company more than it already was.
She realized that all of those annoying emotions were really only keeping her back. Happiness, disappointment and even anger weren't something she should ever show or bother anyone with ever again.
Life from that point became a game, a huge chess board with Renette trying to figure out the next person's moves, that's all it was.
She hated to admit it but Julien was right. Everyone she had encountered had fooled her with sweet words and promises of happiness just to try and break her. Even the people she met studying under her father were all the same.
She now knew that everyone's smile hid something, and if was she enjoyment to try and break them down first, before they could do so themselves.
She was Renette Lightwood, the head of the Lightwood group and no one would ever get in her way ever again.
That was, until she came face to face with the twins again.
I'm so sorry but this is so dang long I'm gonna have to cut it into two parts. Here we see how Renette's personality and attitude came to be. We see her kind of mold into that mindset of her "Life's a game" philosophy which also shows how much she really values Tamaki now. He was practically the only person that didn't treat her like garage or get ripped away from her.
