"Kids," Star said turning around with amazement. Staring at them with her sunken in eyes. She was stroking her pale blonde hair, with surprising now grey in it. "Is it Sunday already?"
"It is dear," Marco said walking over to her. Gently he kissed her on the forehead.
"Time sure does goes by fast," Star looked out the window. Appearing to be in some sort of daze. "Father Time is being kind to us."
Artemis slowly walked over to his mom. He stared at her for a minute. Star slowly opened her arms a little. Artemis held back a few tears and ran into her arms. Star started stroking his hair a little. After a bit, she leaned back and held his face. She stroked the area around his eyes.
"Oh my sweet baby boy," she said as she continued stroking his face. Highlighting the area around his eyes. "You remind so much of your grandmother. She would have loved you so much. Especially your eyes."
Artemis stepped back a little. He kept his hand on his cheek. A little bit away from his eyes. They were the only thing that really made him stand out. His eyes were purple and he knew no one else with eyes of this color. His mom liked to go on and on about how his great-grandmother's eyes were the same color.
Harmony remained in behind the others. Despite visiting her quite often, she never had gotten used to her mother looking like this. She had many memories of her mother being happy but also plenty of her crying in her father's arms. Harmony could never hear what she was crying about but it sounded very serious. However, slowly those happy moments faded. While she still continued to smile there was always the feeling she was hiding them. From what she could tell Artemis had no memories of how their mother used to be. Only of her off smile and her slowly worsening. Becoming very distant from everyone and often would just lie in her bed for hours on end. When it got too bad, she had to come here.
"Come one honey." Marco grabbed Star's hand. "Let's go outside for a bit."
The back of Madame Leone's was a large garden. As it was summertime it was currently full of different flowers. Ones of all different colors. When they were able to, the family would spend their visits in the garden. As they walked Harmony lingered behind the rest of her family. Occasionally she would stay in place and pretend to smell a flower or something. Marco had his arm around Star and the two seemed to be talking like normal.
Harmony needed to freeze in place. It was one of those moments. One of the few where her mom seemed like a glimpse of her old self. Harmony was forced to look at Artemis. As far as Harmony could tell all Artemis had no memories of how their mother used to be. All he knew was this and it hurt her.
"Harmony dear come sit with us," Star said quietly. Harmony walked cautiously over. The others were sitting at a small silver table with four seats. Artemis was sitting in between in his parents with a wide smile on his face. Harmony awkwardly walked over and sat in the one empty seat. She slowly sat down. Crossing her legs as she did.
"Look at you. Sitting just like a proper princess." Star started stroking Harmony's hair. Harmony smiled weakly and slowly looked away from Star.
"It's just how I like to sit." Harmony laughed a little. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her father and brother glance at each other.
"Still, you'd fit right in at Butterfly Castle."
Artemis's eyes widened at those words. Marco nudged him little. Keeping it under the table so no one would see. Slowly Artemis louched back and looked away. He grabbed his backpack and held it tightly. He continued looking down.
"Artemis sweetie, reading anything new?" Star asked him quietly.
"Just rereading Callum Carpenter," Artemis said quietly and sunk back into his chair a little more. He glanced at his father again, who gave an assuring nod. Star smiled at him. She reached over and grabbed his hand gently.
"Never give up on your love of magic. Promise me that."
"Of course Mom."
Back at home Harmony sat her desk. Slowly in wrote in the jade green diary on her desk. Carefully choosing each word. She always wrote in a dark blue pen. each of her words written in beautiful cursive. Ever since she was little she practiced writing in cursive. Despite it not being really taught anymore, Harmony loved it. It was very aesthetically pleasing. The journal was very well organized. With the date being written in the margin next to each entry. And there was a gap in between each. It was very calming experience for her. It was a safe place for her to express her feelings without anyone knowing.
She looked over to a picture on her desk. It was of her father, mother, and herself. Harmony was being held by her father with the widest smile she could. Marco's other arm was around Star. Both of Star's arms were on her stomach, which was slightly bludging out. Slowly she took it in her hands. Purple glitter getting on her fingertips. Sometimes when her father would come, he would pause and stare at the picture. Often for a while. A few times Harmony had considered moving the picture to the family room but always talked herself out of it.
"I miss you, Mom," she said quietly hugging the picture.
"Hey Harmony," Artemis said poking his head into her room.
"What is it Artemis?" Harmony sighed and closed her journal. Keeping the picture close to her.
"I was wondering if Carrots somehow got in here?" Artemis asked. Harmony noticed that Artemis was holding his laptop in one of his arms.
"Why would your bunny toy be in hear?" Harmony asked sounding very annoyed. Artemis stepped back a little.
"It's just I accidentally spilled some juice on him and put him in the wash." Artemis remained out of the room. He moved his laptop to his chest and hugged it tightly. "I didn't know if he ended up here."
"Dad's probably having the thing air dry." Harmony looked at the laptop in his arms again. She put the picture back on its spot on the desk. "Why do you have your computer with you?"
Artemis's eyes immediately lit up. He walked into the room and up to Harmony's desk. Slowly he looked over at it. Harmony moved her journal and nodded. Artemis placed it on his desk. Harmony took notice of all the Callum Carpenter and other fantasy-related stickers decorating it. Quickly Artemis opened it and pulled up a picture of some sort of stick.
"Isn't it cool?" Artemis asked smiled widely glancing back from the screen to Harmony.
"What is it?" Harmony asked still trying to figure out what exactly what she was looking at.
"It's a replica of Callum Carpenter's wand!" Artemis bounced a little. "It's almost exactly as I pictured it. And want to know the best part?"
"Sure why not?" Harmony leaned her arm on the desk.
"You can sync to your computer and use it to perform spells. Look!" Artemis clicked on a video below the image of the wand. It showed a bunch of people using the wand. At first a few were pretending to have a duel with the fake wands. With the narrator describing the famous book series. It then showed the same kids using the wand with the computer. Switching between them and the computer where different spells were being performed.
"Isn't it cool?" Artemis asked once it was done.
"I guess so."
"I'm going to talk to Dad about it." Artemis closed his laptop and it pulled it close to him. "It would be amazing to have one. To do magic even if it's just on a screen, would just be perfect. Almost like the ones Mom could do."
"You really think those stories are true?" Harmony asked turning towards him.
"What do you mean?" Artemis's voice started shaking. He stepped back a little.
"Those stories Dad always tells you. Why on earth do you think they're real? Because really flying horseheads, demons, a magic wand? It sounds like something you'd see in a TV show, not in real life. dad just hasn't said anything because Mom invented the story and you keep asking about it. I'm tired of you believing these childhood fantasies. It. Has. To. Stop."
Artemis went quiet. Without a word, he turned around and back to his room. Harmony closed the door to her room and went back to writing in her journal, like nothing had happened.
