"Ew, what is this?" Harmony asked looking at the goop that was covering her. She started to scrape it off when it started absorbing into her skin. "Eep!
Harmony jumped up. She frantically started to scrape it off her. But it seemed with every second more of the liquid absorbed into her. As more of it did she started feeling a growing burning sensation in her cheeks. She placed her hands on them, forgetting they were covered in the liquid. It only made the burning worse. She held back a scream. She grabbed her phone and opened up her front-facing camera. Then she screamed. There were dark blue music notes on her cheeks.
"What are these?" Harmony placed her hand on her cheek. She rubbed really hard but they wouldn't come off. Turning behind her she some people staring at her. Covering her face she ran off.
"I can't let anyone see me like this!" Harmony ran away from the scene. Keeping one arm around her face. When back on the bus she kept her head down. Occasionally glancing around her. Luckily no one seemed to be staring at her. But the thought of it made her shiver and eager to get home.
Artemis crawled out from under the table. Looking around he didn't see any damage. Like nothing had happened at all. Slowly he walked around the house. There didn't seem to be any damage. With each second the nerves in him grew. But there was nothing wrong. After a few minutes he pulled out his phone and his heart dropped. There was a text from his dad that read, Can either of you call your grandparents? There was an Earthquake in Royal Woods. I can't because of class.
Artemis gulped and opened up his contacts. Shaking he pressed to call for his grandparents. The phone started ringing. He started pacing. Quickly walking in circles for what seemed like forever.
"Artemis I wasn't excepting-" Angie said sounding rather delighted.
"Abuela are you okay?!" Artemis yelled. Tears filling up his eyes.
"Oh, sweetie did you hear about the earthquake?" Artemis started whimpering a little. "Don't worry Nieto Abuelo and I are fine. The earthquake happened a few miles from our house."
"You sure?" Artemis said of tears. "What about Aunt Mari?"
"She's fine too. She wasn't home but called shortly after it happened."
"Okay," Artemis said.
"I got to go now, sweetie," Angie said in her normal sweet tone. "I'll talk to you soon okay? I love you."
"I love you too," Artemis said. He started to wipe the tears away from his eyes. He pulled out his phone and started to text his dad when he heard the door open. Turning around he saw Harmony. "Are you okay?"
"Not now Artemis," Harmony said running past him. Artemis stood in stun silence after she did.
Harmony ran to the bathroom and locked herself in. Immediately she turned to face the mirror. The music notes were staring at her. Just the same as they were the first time. Harmony started to quickly rub her hand across one of them. No matter how hard she rubbed, there was no change. Harmony dashed to grab a face cloth. She quickly wet it was warm water and rubbed that on the music note. Still no change.
"What is going on?" Harmony backed away a bit.
"Hello anyone home?" some called from the door. Artemis ran downstairs and smiled.
"Aunt Mariposa!" Artemis said running up to her. "What you doing here?"
"What I can't visit my favorite niece and nephew?" Mariposa asked rubbing Artemis's head.
"We're you're only niece and nephew," Artemis laughed and Mariposa stopped rubbing his head. Artemis remained quiet for a moment. Lost in thought for a few minutes. "Is everything alright?"
"About the earthquake?" Mariposa leaned on the doorway. "Pssh we've been through worse. Besides, it was by the new The Fruit Blend or something like that. No damage except for there. That place has bad luck, I'm pretty sure the taco place that used to be there was destroyed in an explosion or something."
"Wow, that is bad luck." Artemis walked over to the edge of the hallway. "Harmony are you coming down?"
"No!" Harmony shouted very loudly. Stunning Artemis for a few seconds.
"But Aunt Mariposa's here!"
"I'm, not feeling well." Artemis raised an eyebrow but Mariposa posed stopped him from moving forward. She gave him a look and Artemis got the hint. Mariposa walked up to her room and knocked on her door. Artemis remained in the kitchen. Still a little on edge from all the had happened. Hopefully, Harmony's illness, whatever it was, wasn't related to the earthquake.
"Hey, Artemis you want to get out for a few hours?" Mariposa asked walking back into the kitchen.
"What about Harmony?" Artemis asked pointing to her room.
"She has to deal with girl stuff," Mariposa said albeit a bit awkwardly. "I'd talked to her she said it's fine. We can bring her an ice cream."
"Ice cream," Artemis jumped up. His aunt laughed a little.
"So you want to go or what?" Mariposa asked with a laugh.
Artemis ran upstairs to his room. He grabbed his backpack and ran back downstairs. A wide smile painted on his face. As they lifted they said goodbye to Harmony, who replied back weakly. The two walked into Mariposa's car. Artemis slowly went into the front seat. Placing his backpack by his feet. Mariposa twirled her keys around a little before starting up the car.
"So here's what I was thinking," Mariposa started as they started driving. "We grab some pizza than head off to that ice cream place with the bumper boats."
"That's awesome!" Artemis cheered before quieting down after a moment. "I feel bad Harmony can't join us."
"Me too, but hey look on the bright side. Normally it's me and her, not me and you hanging out. Besides now we do the bumper boats."
"You got a point, but I still feel bad she suddenly isn't feeling well."
"That just happens somethings. Remember that one 4th of July where your mom..." Mariposa stopped for a moment.
"Is something wrong?" Artemis asked quietly.
"That might have been from the 4th where she pregnant with you. I don't think they had told us until after that."
"Oh," Artemis leaned over and looked out the window. "Aunt Mari do belive those stories about my parents."
"The ones about their adventures when they were teenagers. I mean I'd say theirs a bit of truth to them but somethings sound a bit out there. Like a horse head that can fly? That's a bit out there."
"Yeah," Artemis laughed a little.
"Oh don't bud I'm sure there's some magic out there." She started rubbing his head again. "You just got to find it."
Harmony was in the bathroom again. This time holding a warm face cloth against her cheek. She didn't care how much it bugged her. Still, the music notes would not go away. Even when rubbing so hard her cheeks hurt. Nothing. There didn't seem to be anything that said they were going away. She wanted to scream but decided not to. She stormed out and laid back on her bed. Pulling a hood over her head, staring at the wall.
"Hi Harmony I'm home," Marco said sticking his head into the room. Harmony didn't respond. Marco walked around and placed a hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry you had to miss out on your aunt's surprise but knowing her she'll make it up to you."
"It's okay dad," Harmony said quietly.
"Staying positive as always." Marco gently kissed the top of her head. "I'll be downstairs if you need me."
Harmony stayed quiet as Marco walked out. When he was gone she sat up and took her hood down. She pulled out her phone and started looking into the strange marks. She found nothing on them. Closest two things were tattoos and scars. And something told her these were neither of those. Blue was an odd color for scars and she was nowhere near any kind of needle. After a few minutes, she started pacing around her room. Trying to think of anything that could explain what was going on.
"Harmony, I made some," Marco stopped. He stared at Harmony. Mainly the music notes. In an instant, he dropped the bowl in his hands.
"Dad I swear it's not what it looks like," Harmony said in a panic.
Marco stared at her for a few more seconds. Frozen in place for what seemed like forever. It was only after Harmony walked closer to him that he spoke. "Magic. It's back."
