"And there we go," Raphael said as he and Artemis placed down the last box. "We're all set."
"This is gonna be the best beach week ever," Mariposa said leaning on a chair a little.
"Wait a minute young lady we still have to unpack," Angie said with her hands on her hips.
"Can relax just a little?" Mariposa pleaded but Angie just handed her a box.
"Come on we'll start with the food," Angie said walking into the kitchen.
Artemis smiled and walked over to help his grandmother. Raphael grabbed his shoulder and gestured outback. He followed his grandfather outside. Together they grabbed a folded table and moved it to the middle of the back yard. After setting it up, Raphael walked back inside and got the keys to the shed. He unlocked it. Artemis walked in and grabbed a chair. Raphael did the same. They did it again so there were four chairs around it. Before Raphael closed the door, Artemis caught a glimpse of the other two chairs inside. His mind went to his first memories here. He remembered sitting on his mother's lap. Looking up at her, she smiled at him. She seemed happy. For once in his life. He could remember his mom being happy. But somethings thinking back there was something off. Like it was all an act. After his mom got admitted into the home, it was just him, Harmony, and his father. The next year his father started teaching summer classes. Each year getting lonelier. But still, he had Harmony. Now she was gone too.
Later Artemis sat at the outdoor table. Mariposa right next to him. Texting on her phone. Angie was on his other side. Currently, she was reading a book. Artemis looked down and quietly sighed.
"Alright Diazes burgers are done," Raphael said walking over with a plate full of them. Artemis reached out and grabbed on and put in on his plate. He started to put mustard on it when Angie placed a second next to it.
"You're a growing boy you need your energy," Angie said with a smile. Artemis smiled and slowly took the burger.
"Oh, Artemis did you here there making a Callum Carpenter movie?" Mariposa asked as she passed Artemis some chips.
"There are rumors of that every year," Artemis said bluntly.
"Then what do you think of this," Mariposa handed Artemis a small white card. On it read Callum Carentur Open Casting Call July 26th.
"Wow," Artemis said looking at the card.
"You should audition," Angie said with a bit of excitement.
"Me?" Artemis said in shock. "No, I couldn't. There's no way they pick me."
"Oh come one, you know that book series more than anyone I know," Mariposa smirked with a lot of confidence. "You even know what Callum's pet griffin is."
"Quinton is a hippogriff," Artemis said failing to hide the annoyance in his voice.
"See I don't even know what a hippogriff is!" Mariposa said jumping up from her seat.
"Even if I know a lot about the series," Artemis said quietly. "I doubt I get the role. I've never acted before."
"You should at least try," Angie said with her supportive smile.
"I agree with your grandma," Raphael said beaming a bit. "Even if you don't think so. You won't know until you try."
"I guess I can think about it," Artemis said quietly but with a smile.
The next Artemis sat on the beach with his grandparents. Raphael sat on his beach chair. The radio playing Spanish music as it always did. Angie was reading the same book as the previous night. Currently, Artemis and his grandfather were sitting under an umbrella, while Angie sat in the sun. Mariposa was not with them at the moment but she was on were way up. After a bit, Artemis stared at the Callum Carpenter book. The conversation from last night still fresh in his mind. He pictured himself on set. Practicing spells with other kids around his age. The closest he would ever get to real magic.
"Look what I got!" Mariposa said excitedly running in front fo everyone. In her hands was what looked like a white surfboard.
"Mariposa dear what is that?" Angie said lifting her sunglasses on her eye.
"I rented a paddleboard for the day!" Mariposa exclaimed. "Come on Artemis try it."
"Will you be with him?" Angie asked with caution.
"Of course Mom," Mariposa started to laugh a little. "What did think, I let him float away."
Angie didn't say anything and just looked at her. Mariposa turned towards Artemis. Slowly he stood up and followed her to the ocean. They walked until they were about waist-deep, for Artemis, in the water. Mariposa held the thing steady as Artemis climbed on. Mariposa proceeded to put a velcro band around his ankle. She quickly went back to shore and returned with a paddle. As she did Artemis held on to the board as the waves went by.
"Okay so what you got to do is stand up and use this paddle to move around," Mariposa explained handing the paddle over to Artemis.
"Okay," Artemis said a little fearful. He took the paddle from Mariposa. Placing it in front of him, he carefully stood back up to his feet. He stumbled a little before getting to his feet. Slowly he brought the paddle down to the water. Making his way across the shoreline before starting to turn around.
"Yeah, Artemis you got this!" Mariposa cheered jumping a little.
"I got this!" Artemis cheered. He smiled widely. He went around a few times, before making his way back to Mariposa.
"I think Mom's calling me over," Mariposa said looking back behind them. "I'll be right back. Stay right there."
Artemis nodded and sat down on the paddleboard. He kept the paddle in the water and occasionally moving it a bit. Making sure he was in view of his grandparents. Before long he saw a family by the shore of the water. A family of five. He couldn't take his eyes off them. There was something sad about looking at it. Would he have a younger sibling if nothing happened to his mom? Would his whole family be here? Well maybe they would still be doing college tours with Harmony but maybe just maybe life wouldn't be as lonely as it was. He sighed. Why couldn't life be better?
"The well," Artemis looked around him. The voice from the pizza shop was back.
"Hello?" Artemis called still looking around. There didn't seem to be anyone talking to him.
"Young Butterfly the answers you seek are found at the well."
"What well?"
"The well at Echo Creek there you will find your destiny."
"There's no well in," Artemis started to say before being knocked over by a wave. Luckily the strap around his ankle kept him from going too far. Quickly he swam up the surface and started couching. Below him, he saw a strange glowing light. He went back under to get closer to it
"Artemis!" He looked up and saw his grandfather pick up out of the water. "Are you okay nino?"
"Yes," Artemis said still coughing a little. "I didn't see that wave."
"Come on let's get you out of here for now," Raphael said still holding Artemis. He unstrapped his ankle and Mariposa grabbed the paddleboard and brought it to shore. Raphael helped Artemis to where the family was sitting. Gently placing Artemis on the blanket where Angie quickly wrapped a towel around him.
"Oh, you poor thing," Angie said patting the towel around him. "That wave came out of nowhere."
"I'm okay," Artemis luckily no longer coughing. Angie kept the towel tightly around him. Despite his best efforts, she stayed by his side. Staring out to the ocean. Hoping to see the light again.
"There we go," Angie said as Artemis started to move a spatula under some pancake batter. Quickly he flipped it over. "Perfect you got it."
Artemis smiled. He repeated the process a few times. Before long there was awhile plate of pancakes. He brought them over to the table. Angie followed suit with some bacon. Artemis sat at the table and poured himself a glass of orange juice. The four of them started eating breakfast. He looked at the date on his phone and smiled. Breakfast went on peacefully. Though Artemis could not get his mind off the voice and the glowing light from the day before. They had to mean something. But he didn't know what.
"Guess who's here!" Artemis jumped from his seat as Marco and Harmony entered the room. Artemis ran over to his sister and hugged her tightly. She immediately hugged him back.
"I'm glad you're here," Artemis said with a smile. He looked behind her and didn't see anything suitcases or bags behind her. "Is every okay?"
"Can I talk to you outside?" Harmony asked quietly. "Alone."
Artemis nodded and slowly followed her outside. Harmony said a quick hello to her grandparents and aunt before heading out to the back. Artemis walked out and caught a glimpse of Marco beginning to talk with them. Turning around he saw Harmony sitting on the porch swing and tapping the spot next to her. Slowly Artemis walked next to her and sat down.
"Is something wrong?" Artemis asked after he sat down.
"Well the truth I'm not going to stay here the rest of the week," Harmony said with a lot of caution in her voice.
"What?" Artemis asked in shock. "Why?"
"Because I got accepted to a boarding school and I'm moving there on Thursday for a summer program."
"A boarding school?" Artemis asked softly.
"Yeah, it's small school a few hours away," Harmony gave him an assuring smile. "They have summer classes and I'm going to attend so I'm caught up with the classes."
"I don't remember a boarding school," Artemis thought to himself. He looked away for a second. At that moment he felt a strange tingling sensation in the back of his head.
"Everything alright out here?" Marco asked walking out to the porch.
"Yes Dad," Harmony said standing back up. She dusted herself off a little. Smiling she walked back into the beach house. Artemis couldn't help but sit there. Frozen in place. Contemplating how his life was going to be even lonelier.
