The trio run out of the restaurant, only to see that complete chaos has taken over the downtown area. Mutant food is running rampant around the city, with extraterrestrial creatures roaring and tearing down everything in their path as citizens flee in terror from their destruction, all while leaving a trail of glowing green sludge behind them. But something seems very off about these.
"Are those burgers? And pizzas?!" Tawna asks in a confused tone.
"Ye-ye-yes! It's like these monsters have j-j-just arrived out of thin air!" Brio stammers.
Just then, a large tentacle falls towards Brio, who turns around a bit too late. Just before he is about to be crushed to death, Tawna yanks him out of the way as Crash runs off in fear.
Pulling him towards a nearby planter tall enough to hide the two of them, Brio tells Tawna, "Tawna, t-thank you for pulling me out of there. I don't know how I could—"
Before Brio can finish, he is quickly interrupted by Tawna, who cups her hand over his mouth and tells him, "Yeah, don't mention it, pal."
"Now, go and hide, Brio! This is no place for you to stay." Tawna says to Brio as she runs off to a nearby phone booth, but is stopped by the concerned calls of Brio. "B-b-but Tawna, these creatures! We have no idea what they can do!"
"It's all right, Brio. I've come prepared." Tawna says as she jumps into a nearby phone booth and smashes out a second later with her motorsport outfit. "Now, like I said, find a place to hide and fast! I'll take care of this mess for you."
Brio salutes her and rushes back to the restaurant where he had found them, only to be thrown out by Papu Papu seconds later, landing flat on his face.
"And stay out!" Papu Papu yells at him. "No reservation, no entry! Period!"
Tawna faceplams and dashes off to defend the market square. The previous creature shoots out several acidic globs at Tawna, followed by a large sweep of the tentacle. Each shot to take down the mutant bandicoot, however, is swiftly avoided. Tawna jumps in the air and manages to give in a few swift kicks at the beast before it takes another swat at her, this time sending her careening into a tree.
However, because of her swift reflexes, Tawna manages to grab onto a tree branch, swing around on it, and propel herself at the creature for a mighty dropkick, causing an explosion of green goo. Crash witnesses the entire feat, and can only make out a few babbles of nonsensical gibberish. Noticing this, Tawna gives him a quick wink and dashes off to hunt down the rest of the mutant food.
Now out of his trance, Crash does a heroic copy of his girlfriend's transformation. He runs into a nearby alleyway and emerges triumphantly... in his underwear. Noticing this, Crash yelps in surprise, blushes in embarrassment and covers up before going back into the alleyway and emerging in his normal attire, but now armed with his mech suit, which he hasn't used since 2001.
He spies his first target, a large spider-like pizza, who notices him equally as quickly. Crash and the creature both charge at each other, firing acid and wumpa fruit. The creature, realizing that it's now getting closer, pounces on the mech, screeching and attempting to tear it to pieces.
Crash, in an effort to disorient the creature, gives it a few blows to its "face" before using the mech's arm to toss it away. The creature manages to catch itself, gives off another war cry and pounces again, but not before Tawna steps in front of Crash and punches the creature in the middle of its body, killing it instantly.
"Oh, my goodness! Crash, are you all right?" she worriedly asks. Crash nods his head rapidly and gives a wink. His playful demeanor starts to fade away quickly as he notices something behind Tawna.
"What's wrong?" Tawna asks, confused. "Is there something on my face?"
Crash screams in fear as another creature lunges towards them. Tawna, now annoyed, turns her head to see a faceless, gooish-like burger creature making a move on them both. However, it doesn't make it too far as it is quickly shot down.
Crash and Tawna look in shock and surprise as they see the now smoldering, bullet-riddled body on the ground.
"Brio!" Tawna thankfully calls out, believing that Brio had put a stop to the mutant food that was about to attack them.
"Guess again!" a familiar flamboyant voice calls out, getting everyone's attention.
"What on earth was that?" Tawna asks as she and Crash look around in confusion.
"Oh no..." Brio whimpers as he, Crash and Tawna look up into the sky and see the airship of Dr. Neo Cortex, Crash's arch-nemesis, hovering over them, now out fitted with a minigun.
"Cortex!" Tawna angrily exclaims while Crash scowls in distaste at his old enemy.
"The one and only!" the evil doctor triumphantly exclaims through a megaphone. "I promised Uka Uka I would destroy you and Crash, and that's just what I'm here to do!" He hangs up the megaphone and turns to his niece, Nina Cortex, who is piloting the airship, N. Gin, Dingodile, Tiny Tiger and Ripper Roo, who are all onboard with him and ready to do Crash in.
"All right, guys, who's ready to do away with these fools?" Cortex asks his minions.
Cortex's minions all let out triumphant battle cries, prompting Cortex to turn to Nina and tell her, "Nina, my niece! Open the cargo doors!"
"With pleasure, uncle!" Nina replies as she presses a button on the control panel of the airship.
Moments later, the cargo bay doors of the airship open, followed by Cortex and his minions leaping out of the airship and landing in front of Crash, Tawna and Brio.
"Surprised to see us, Crash?" Cortex smugly tells Crash and the others.
"Darn it, Cortex!" Brio shouts at Cortex in annoyance. "We're dealing with something important right now! So why don't you all just leave Crash and Tawna alone and go back to tinkering on another one of your failed projects?"
"Sorry, Brio. No can do." N. Gin smugly tells Brio whilst also laughing maniacally. "We're here to bring the doom!"
"Yeah!" Nina exclaims. "Maybe this will teach you not to side with our enemies!"
"Don't you all get it?" Brio says as he steps in front of Crash and Tawna to protect them. "They're my friends. In fact, if it wasn't for Tawna here, I would've been dinner for that horrifying Megamix character that I was forced to create!"
"Very inspiring words, Brio, but alas, they have fallen on deaf ears." Cortex says to him as he charges up his ray gun. "Nina! Minions! Let's get them!"
"This is ridiculous." Tawna groans as she motions Brio to follow her. "Brio, come with me, quick!" she tells him before turning to Crash and telling him, "Crash, you stay here and stop Cortex and his minions! Meet us at the theater when you're done!"
Crash gives Tawna a thumbs up as she leads Brio to the same planter they were hiding behind earlier. As she races off to fight the remaining mutant food, she tells him, "Now, Brio, please stay hidden this time! I don't want anything happening to you!"
As Brio watches Tawna continue to fight the mutant food, he says to himself, "I'll try, Tawna. Just please don't get hurt."
Meanwhile, Crash is busy doing battle with Cortex and his minions. N. Gin, armed with only a socket wrench, runs towards Crash and attempts to disassemble his mech suit, only for Crash to snatch the wrench out of N. Gin's hand and crush it in two with the mech suit's robotic claw. N. Gin can only whimper before fleeing towards a corner to hide while Ripper Roo tosses various items at Crash with his feet, only for Crash to deflect all the items tossed his way.
"Tiny squash puny bandicoot!" Tiny shouts as he lunges at Crash, who casually steps aside, causing Tiny to instead run past him and make contact with Ripper Roo as the two of them crash into a consignment shop, reemerging moments later in ladies' clothes.
As Crash giggles at their goofy appearances, he hears the sound of Dingodile charging at him from behind, exclaiming, "Someone bring out some butter! I'm gonna make toast!"
Right as Dingodile fires his flamethrower, Crash does a back-flip over him, having learned the trick from Ami, and lands behind him. The flame from his flamethrower makes contact with N. Gin's rocket, activating it and sending him flying right into Dingodile, who likewise goes flying right into Cortex, knocking him down to the ground.
"Dingodile, you oaf!" Cortex snaps at Dingodile as the two of them get up. "Why don't you watch where you're going!"
As Cortex continues to do battle with Crash, he shouts at Dingodile, "Get that flamethrower of yours and burn him to a crisp! Now!"
"Yes sir, Cortex!" Dingodile exclaims as he searches for his flamethrower pack, which became separated from his person when he collided with Cortex. "Now where did I put that stupid..."
"I believe you were looking for this?" Tawna asks Dingodile, getting his attention as he spots her with his flamethrower pack.
"Don't worry, Dingodile. I'll get it for you!" Nina tells Dingodile as she charges towards Tawna, who casually stops Nina in her tracks, picks her up by her backpack and wraps the hose from Dingodile's flamethrower around her. She then dropkicks the flamethrower pack right towards Dingodile, sending Nina flying along with it and causing a small explosion once it makes contact with Dingodile, leaving the two of them charred and burnt.
"Okay, clearly these two are no match for us." Nina whimpers as she motions N. Gin, Tiny, Dingodile and Ripper Roo to make a full retreat. "Let's get out of here!"
As Cortex continues fighting Crash, he turns to see Nina and his minions climbing aboard his airship to escape.
"Guys! Where are you going?!" Cortex shouts as his minions take off in his airship, leaving him behind. "Get back here and help me defeat this meddling mammal!"
Seconds later, Crash approaches Cortex from behind and fires a blast of wumpa fruit at him, sending him flying into a nearby alleyway and into some trash cans. Cortex groans in pain as he crawls out of a trash can, only for a full trash bag to fall on top of him, covering him with garbage.
Crash happily laughs at having disposed of Cortex momentarily, before being smacked by a giant tentacle seconds later, since he let his guard down. The force of the attack completely destroys Crash's mech suit and sends Crash flying into a wall.
Brio, seeing this, calls out Crash's name in shock and darts towards him as a mutant burger spots him running. Tawna, watching the ordeal, gasps in fear and calls out, "Brio, stop! Wait!"
Hearing Tawna's cries, Brio stops in his tracks and turns to see the mutant burger charging towards him. Brio screams in a panic, but before he can even move a muscle, the creature fires a blast of acid which hits Brio, covering him in goo.
"Brio!" Tawna fearfully calls out as she races over to Brio. Crash, having peeled himself off the wall, likewise approaches Brio to check on him. "Are you two okay?" Tawna asks Crash and Brio.
Crash nods in reassurance while Brio groans, "Oh, my head. Something doesn't feel right. I feel light-headed."
"Just sit tight, Brio." Tawna reassures him as she pulls out her phone. "I'll call an ambulance. Maybe they can help you."
Before Tawna can even dial a number, Crash fearfully places his hand on her hand and turns her to see what he just layed eyes on: the remaining mutant food merging into one massive burger-pizza hybrid. Tawna gasps, drops her phone and fearfully grabs hold of Crash, who likewise does the same to Tawna.
As the creature draws closer to them, Cortex, watching from the alleyway, says to himself, "Huh. Looks like I won't have to waste any more ammo on these bandicoots. Thank you to whoever sent this food."
Before the massive creature can do them in, though, a massive flame engulfs it, burning it to a crisp while Crash and Tawna look on. Once the flames dissipate, the charred food stands there for a second before disintegrating into ash.
Confused, Crash and Tawna look around before spotting Coco and Spyro flying above them.
"Hey, guys!" Spyro calls out to them. "Thought you two could use some help fending off these beasts!"
"Coco! Spyro!" Tawna happily calls out. "Boy, are we glad to see you two!"
As Coco and Spyro land on the ground and approach Crash and Tawna, Cortex groans in annoyance, having not fulfilled his promise to Uka Uka, grabs his raygun and storms out of the alleyway towards the heroes.
"So tell me, what are you two doing here?" Tawna asks the two of them.
Coco, rubbing the back of her neck, tells them, "Well... you see, we have some... news for you."
Tawna, slowly realizing that something is wrong, asks Coco with concern, "What?" while Crash likewise becomes concerned that whatever Coco and Spyro have to say won't be good.
"Well, you see..." Spyro says as he prepares to tell them the news. "It's like this..."
Before Spyro can explain what Von Clutch had told Coco earlier, Cortex calls out, "Not so fast, you fools!" getting their attention as they see Cortex holding them at gunpoint with his ray gun.
Tawna sighs in frustration and says to Cortex, "You just can't leave well enough alone, can't you, Cortex?"
"Yeah, can't you see you're outnumbered here?" Coco asks Cortex, annoyed. "So why don't you go back to your iceberg lab before Spyro barbecues you."
"Fat chance, missy." Cortex tells her as he sets his ray gun from stun to kill. "I don't want to have Uka Uka giving me another earful. Now, stay still while I fry the lot of you!"
However, before Cortex can pull the trigger, they all hear the sound of Brio groaning in pain. They all turn to see Brio cringing in extreme pain, clasping onto his stomach.
"Brio?" Coco asks with extreme concern as she, Crash, Tawna and Spyro look on with fear.
"Pfft. Give the dramatics a rest, Brio." Cortex scoffs as Coco approaches Brio to check on him.
Hearing Cortex's words, Crash smacks Cortex upside the head as Spyro scolds, "Zip it, Cortex! Can't you see he's in pain?"
As Coco gets closer to Brio, she asks him as she reaches out to him, "Brio, what's wrong? What did that food do to you?"
Before Brio can take Coco's hand, though, a set of purple tentacles erupt from his flesh, prompting Coco to exclaim in fear and back off from him. "Coco! Help me!" Brio fearfully cries out to Coco as she, Crash, Tawna and Spyro cringe in fear and watch as Brio's flesh goes from its normal pale color to an alien-like shade of purple, followed by his eyes turning yellow and his pupils becoming long, thin and narrow.
As Coco reapproaches the newly mutated Brio, Cortex snarks, "Hmm. We might as well call you N. Brioctopus now." prompting Tawna to kick him squarely in the shin, forcing him to shut up as she snaps at him, "Not another word out of you, Cortex! This is serious!"
As Coco returns to Brio's side, he grabs onto her overalls and fearfully asks, "Coco! What's happened to me?!"
"I don't know, Brio." Coco says to him as she signals him to let go of her overalls. "But I can help you out here."
"Really? You can?" Brio asks her as Crash and Spyro join Coco by her side.
"Of course." Coco replies. "I just need to get you to my lab. There, I can analyze you and we can find out who did this to you and maybe see if we cure you of your condition."
"Oh, thank you, Coco! Thank you!" Brio exclaims as he gives Coco a hug, covering Coco in some kind of slime, much to her disgust. "Oh. Sorry."
As Tawna removes her motorsport outfit, revealing that she was wearing her normal attire underneath the whole time, Cortex chuckles at Coco's disgust, which Tawna takes notice of. She then grabs Cortex by his hair, grabs his ray gun and tosses it at the wall, smashing it to pieces. As she drags Cortex to Crash and the others, Cortex exclaims, "Jeez, Tawna, why would you do this to me?!"
"I'm not about to let you cause any more trouble, Cortex!" Tawna sternly tells him. "So you are going to come with us and we're going to keep a close eye on you so you don't try anything funny. Got that?"
As Cortex and Tawna join Crash and the others, Cortex snarks, "Just you watch, Tawna. Once we get to Coco's lab, I'll grab one of her gizmos and use it to fry you all."
"Not happening, Cortex." Coco tells him as she starts to lead Brio out of Wumpa City and back to her and Crash's place, with everyone following close behind. "All my gizmos are non-lethal and are to only be used for research purposes."
"Blast." Cortex groans to himself under his breath as Crash chuckles at his misery.
