Light and Shadow

Pippin still could not believe that he sat on the leftover of Isengard together with Merry. Recently, Treebeard leaded an army of Ents and the hideout of Saruman was destroyed. "We two against the shadow, Pip. As seen, hobbits may be small but unstoppable," declares his friend. The two hobbits laughed, then Pippin saw riders coming towards them. "Merry, look," he informs his other half and both of them met their friends halfway. "Could not have done it better," Boromir states with a smile, then dismounted and were finally in Pippin's reach. Together with Merry he clung to his feet. "Now that he reunited with his little ones, Faramir will not be demanded by Boromir any longer," Gimli determines from behind Legolas. "Definitely," answers the one to that was referred. "I am afraid, I'll have to disappoint you. Faramir will spend as much time as I with them from now on. That I can guarantee," counters Boromir. The younger one hides his smile but Pippin saw it. When Faramir looked up, the hobbit returned the smile and received an honest one of the Ranger. Then a hand was offered to him and Pippin found himself on a horse behind Faramir. "Good. You get closer to each other," determines Boromir. Behind him was Merry. "One better does not challenge a Captain General," the younger one replies. "Treebeard took good care of you," Gandalf states while viewing Pippin. "He did. But to convince him that the Ents were needed we had to be very convincing," responds Merry. "Once we received water with it, I gained high," adds Pippin. "Luckily, it lost effect on you, Pip," declares Merry. "So, you two were the ones who convinced them to take part in battle?" asks Aragorn. "We did. I mean, Merry did," replies Pippin. "We did," corrects his friend. "Means you gone through quite an adventure," states Boromir. The youngest hobbit nods in excitement. "How were you faring?" questions Merry. "We defended Helm's Deep," responds Legolas. "I won against a certain elf," appends Gimli with a broad smile on his face. "Faramir gave us quite a scare back at Amon Hen," explains Boromir. "That is why we should look after him," determines Pippin. "Indeed. I need you two to prevent a similar case from happen again," continues the Captain General. Faramir drops his head. "I know how you feel," Pippin says in a low voice what causes the ranger to look up again. "We could do that. Am I right, Pip," responds Merry. "We will Merry," answers the young hobbit. "I knew that I could count on you," determines Boromir with a smile. "Where are we heading to?" asks his other half. "To Edoras. Heart and main city of Rohan," responds Aragorn. "I would bet that a celebration awaits us," adds Gimli.

It did. Every soldier that participated in the battle, came together in Edoras. Faramir dismounted and Pippin slid down. Secretly, he did not stop smiling about his brother. It has always been like this. Boromir ever was protective of the younger one. Faramir as well, whenever the older one needed it. While he was on patrol, often for years, he often thought of his brother and wished to be reunited with him. Thinking of his brother. "How is the wound on your arm, Captain General?" he asks when Boromir passes him. "How is your hand?" was the answer he received. Faramir shot him a look and Boromir counters with a stern face. Then both of them smiled. "I was first," declares the young ranger. "It has not disturbed me again since you mentioned it," Boromir replies. "As you could see I rode my steed without any complications," Faramir responds. "I think I have to be satisfied with that. As long as are you not unconscious," states Boromir then he left to ascend the stairs what led to the Golden Hall. "Would you mind to spend time with me and therefore make a later appearance at the festivities?" Mithrandir questions from behind. Faramir nods, the wizard smiles and they head for the stalls. "You were wounded severe I heard. However, you seemed to be faring well since," began his friend. "Yes, I were wounded through an arrow when I shielded my brother," replies Faramir. "May I ask what happened in detail after some thought you dead?" queries the younger one. "I guess my dear boy that you know the answer already," counters Mithrandir. The young ranger smiled and answers," I have an assumption." Then the steed of the wizard snorts. "I forgot. I have not introduced you yet. This is Shadowfox. Lord of all horses and a descendant of the Mearas," declares his friend.

Carefully, Faramir drew near and held out his hand to let Shadowfox decide whether or not he will proceed. The horse touches his hand and Faramir pats the neck of the Mearas. Mithrandir based himself on his staff. "Now let me hear your assumption," the wizard determines. Faramir let off Shadowfox and turned around. "First of all, you are one of the Istari. One of the immortals who were sent to this country to govern it. I would say when you battled the Balrog, you actually were dead for a moment. However, Valar itself sent you back because your task was not completed. Our country was still in need of your service," explains the younger one. "That is all correct. You ever were a good student," responds Mithrandir. The wizard received a faint smile in return. "How are things with your father?" his friend then asks. "Nothing has changed. He has not stopped to blame me for my mother´s dead. I would cast a poor reflection on him, he stated shortly before we left for Rivendell. But I've got used to it. Yet, I still hope for the better," Faramir returns. "Deep within he cares for you," counters Mithrandir. The younger one bows his head. "I will better join the festivities before Boromir is worried about my absence. Unless, you need me further then I'll stay," the young ranger determines. His friend remains silent and gestures him with a smile that he could go. Faramir left the stables and climbs the stairs. Inside the hall, all participants rose from their seats. He enters and saw Aragorn. The younger one walks over to him. Estel smiles and adds," You have not missed much. I suppose Mithrandir asked for your presence." Faramir bows slightly with his head after all Estel was his king. "There is no need for it yet. I am honoured but in first place I am your friend," Aragorn replies. "And I suppose Boromir realized my absence?" questions Faramir. "He did. You are lucky indeed to have him as a brother. As lucky for me to know him at my side," responds Estel.

"Have you seen Faramir?" Boromir queries for the third time. He thought his brother was right behind him but when all men gathered together and got seated to listen to Théoden's speech, the older one realized that Faramir was not with him. So, once the speech was over, he searched for his brother. Then someone touched his shoulder from behind and Boromir turns around. It was the one he searched for. He viewed his brother with a serious look. "What can I do that you will forgive me?" Faramir counters. "I was talking to Gandalf," the younger one continued. "No need to do anything brother. It is just... I cannot forget you were lying there. Unconscious. Because of me. That is why I prefer it to have you in sight," replies Boromir. The thought alone brought tears in his eyes. The older one feared for Faramir that day. Luckily, only his brother saw his eyes and when Boromir looked at him, he realized that the younger one had tears in his eyes as well. Once again, they found themselves in an embrace, this time it was Faramir who began. "My diary could use another entry. You could assist me if you want," his brother queries while he let go of the embrace. "Suddenly you accept my style of writing," Boromir returns. "If we do consider the fact that you already wrote an entry. Yes, I do," the younger one replies. "If you insist," the Captain General responds.

So, it comes that they both left the hall. "May I join the two of you?" asks a well-known voice. It was Aragorn. "You may," replies Boromir and in a low voice adds," My king and friend." Elessar smiles at him and returns," My thanks." Three men of the West headed outside and took a seat. Over them, the stars themselves seem to greet them and shone bright. "As I became a ranger and beyond, they ever guided me," states Aragorn. "That is why I can name some of them," his friend continued. "I were able to do that when I was young. I lost that ability on battlefield," counters Boromir. "It has a reassuring effect on me to know that even in the darkest of times, they shine bright to remind us of the light in our world," determines Faramir. "My favourite one is Morwinyon. Its name means 'glint in the dusk'," declares Aragorn. Unfortunately, Boromir did not remember any of the names of stars from his childhood. As if he read his mind, his brother admits," There is only one name I can recall. It is Menelmacar. The 'Swordsman of the Sky'. When I was young and without my brother at Minas Tirith I was on the watch for it. The 'Swordsman of the Sky' reminded me of him and the various swordplay we accomplished. Besides, I felt safe in Menelmacar's presence." Again, Boromir had the feeling that he failed his brother. The older one should had done more that he was not sent away so often. "You did not do that. You could never fail me," Faramir reassures him. Boromir viewed him and was about to query," How could you tell..." To his surprise it was Aragorn who speaks instead of his brother, "From the look of your face, Boromir." His brother drew near. "Do you remember the swordplay in which we ended up with a scold of father?" Faramir asks him. "You mean the one when we trained under the tree of Gondor," the Captain General smiles. They did to pretend to fight for the King of Gondor. It was his idea, what he told his father but he was not heard. At the end of their fight, one aim of Faramir hit the tree. It happened by accident but afterwards the younger one received most of the scold.

A Boromir at the age of twelve was about to collect his little brother for their daily swordplay. He opens the door of Faramir's chamber but he was not inside. Maybe he was to be found in the library. Boromir closes the door and makes for one of the favourite places of Faramir. He enters it and could see some hair of his brother behind a bookshelf. As silent as the older one could, he approaches the younger one. However, he was heard and greeted by his brother. Faramir was already dressed in his garment for training. "I forgot time. The book of the history of Gondor was really appealing," his brother explained. Boromir smiled at his little one and turned around. Faramir jumped on his back and together they made for the training grounds. "May tell me the content of your book," he queries. "The part I read was about the return of Gondor's King," the younger one answers. Boromir came to a halt. "Shall we train in presence of his tree today?" he questions. "You mean under the tree of the King?" asks Faramir. The older one nods and turns his head to meet the gaze of his brother. "Is it not forbidden?" Faramir concedes doubt. "I have not heard such a thing," Boromir counters with a smile. "Then let us fight for the King," replies his brother. Boromir changed direction and carried them both to the tree. The guards regarded them for a moment then continued with their watch. Faramir slides from his back and drew his wooden sword. Simultaneously, Boromir pass a shield to his brother. Afterwards, he drew the wooden sword he used during training. He waited till Faramir went in defence position, then Boromir began with his first aim. His brother smiles while he kept his stern gaze. Faramir evaded the blow barely. After that his brother stopped smiling and tried to mimic Boromir. He parries the attack of the younger one easily and waited for Faramir's next move. The little one drew closer and Boromir went some steps back. Suddenly, his brother made an attempt to bring him to the fall. Boromir dodges and took part when the sword of Faramir hit the tree. The younger one let go of sword and shield and regards him. Boromir was about to embrace him but it was then he realized their father witnessed everything. Faramir lowers his head. Both received the order to follow their father to the office of the Steward.

"We are responsible that the tree of Gondor is now equipped with a scratch in its bark," Boromir says addressed to Aragorn. "Now my mind is finally set at ease because our King will return soon and therefore the tree will flourish again," adds Faramir. Then the younger one reveals his diary and lay it in front of them. Afterwards, he fetches his quill and offered it to Boromir. "You were serious?" he asks his brother with a smile. Faramir nods and Boromir took the quill:

Gondor's hope

I seized the opportunity to change the headline. What news... We successfully defended Helm's Deep and afterwards we reunited with our little ones. And now the quill will be passed to Aragorn if he accepts it.

Boromir presents the quill to his king and friend. Elessar silently convinced himself with a short view at Faramir if the young ranger welcomes it. Then he took the quill:

I did accept it. Any other opportunity was not left. Indeed, Helm's Deep were defended most bravely and Rohan is for now free of the shadow. However, our journey is not over. Not yet. Gondor still awaits a rough attack of the enemy.

Aragorn finished the last sentence and handed the diary back to its owner. Faramir accepted book and quill and added a part of his own:

I would not expect it otherwise. It is fine with me that you changed the headline brother. From now on I will use it. There is nothing else I could add. It is all said.

The flashback of Boromir and Faramir came to me when I regarded a picture. Where you able to see Denethor? I only recognized the shadow of him when I looked twice.

Curious? I changed the cover of the story. There you will find it.

In full glory: Open Google; Search for "Faramir and Boromir Fantasy Flight Games"; it is the first pic (a swordplay under the tree); watch out because Denethor is watching

I agree that this story of mine is, how to say it, a bit of a perfect world (sometimes). But remember it is found in the family section. Thank you for staying with me and this story.
