Elsa x Hans : Christmas Surprise
Snow on Christmas Eve night was always a welcomed sight—unless it was in one's bedroom.
Now, snow in the bed of the Queen and Prince Consort was not totally unusual, but at that late hour it usually spelled nightmares.
Which is why when the cold of the snow made its way through the heavy blanket of sleep, Hans' first reaction was to turn to his wife.
Her sleep was easy and unbroken, her light white blond hair looking like a river of moonlight on her pillow.
Confused, Hans looked around the room wondering if perhaps natural snow had somehow made its way into their room.
As he was looking around a small giggle caught his ear and turning towards it, his eyes landed on the mischievous smile of his eldest child.
Hanne's light blue eyes were bright as she met his eyes and with a squeal she clambered upon the bed shouting in that odd half whisper that children were so good at, "Papa, Papa, look what I can do!"
Twirling her still chubby little fingers around in a semi-circle, a sprinkle of snow fell upon Hans' nose.
Astonished, Hans sat up further on the bed, pulling Hanne up on his knees as he asked. "Hanne, my little snowflake, when did you learn how to do that?"
Her smile grew even wider as she bounced up and down on his knees. "Tonight, Papa! Santa, gave just what I asked for! Now I'm just like Mama!"
At this happy cry, Elsa, who had somehow slept through the commotion, awoke and stared with terrified eyes at the snow gathering around her husband and daughter's head.
Seeing that her mother was awake, Hanne scrambled off her father's lap and crawled into her mother's, waving her hands wildly around.
"Mama, Mama look! I can make it snow now, too!"
Hans could see the tension gathering in Elsa's shoulders as she tried and failed to smile in the face of her daughter's obvious delight.
Reaching under the covers for Elsa's hand he squeezed her cold fingers in his, trying to comfort his wife without distressing his daughter.
Before either he or Elsa could say another word, Hanne was bouncing her way off the bed exclaiming. "I'm gonna go show Andy!"
This got a word out of Elsa's tight throat. Lurching forward she grabbed Hanne tightly by the hands shouting."NO!"
Hanne, never having seen her mother like this before, drew back in fright, tears gathering swiftly in the little six-year-old's eyes.
Moving with a swiftness that made his sleepy head spin, Hans clasped both their hands in his own and in as soothing a voice as he could manage said:
"Hanne, my little snowflake, do you remember the story Mama told you about how Aunt Anna and Uncle Kristoff first met?"
Eyes still watery, Hanne looked at her papa in confusion but nevertheless slowly nodded her head.
"And do you remember that Aunt Anna got very ill from an old injury and that Mama had to heal her?"
Again a slow nod of the head.
"Well that old injury was from Mama not knowing how to use her powers. Now you wouldn't want to hurt Andy would you?"
A wide-eyed look and a shake of her little head was his answer.
"No, Mama and I know that you don't want that. So until Mama is able to train you on how to use your powers properly, you can't play with them with Andy without us, all right?"
Hanne took a moment to think this over during which Hans risked a peek at Elsa.
Her eyes were still rather tense around the corners but her grip had relaxed on Hanne's hands and she was looking at his with a look of awe he felt deeply humbled by.
Finally Hanne asked excitedly. "Then, can we all go show Andy?!"
Biting back a laugh at her attempt to outfox him, Hans gave her a stern look and said. "Somehow I don't think Santa would be too happy with you if you stayed up all night and woke up your little brother from his much needed rest. He is still getting over his cold, remember?"
A pout found its way to her lips but with a long sigh she conceded. "Okay. Will you show me how to use my powers tomorrow, Mama?"
Hans was relieved to see that the tension had finally eased enough from Elsa's face that Hanne was no longer fearful or confused by her mother's reactions and that Elsa had gathered enough strength to smile and say. "Of course, my darling. But right now it is time for you to go to bed."
Throwing her hands up in the air causing another flutter of snow to fall around their heads, Hanne let out a huff and said. "Oh, all right. Can I sleep here?"
Letting out a little laugh that made Hans more confident that everything would be fine, Elsa replied while tapping their daughter lightly on the nose. "No, you may not. I will tuck you in though."
Smiling happily, Hanne gave Hans a swift kiss on the cheek and received one in return before being swept up in her mother's arms to be carried back to her bed.
Making himself more comfortable against his pillows, Hans pondered the night's surprise while waiting for Elsa to return.
When she crept back in on silent feet, she wordlessly lifted the covers off him and lay herself down against his chest resting her head over his heart.
Rubbing her back in soothing little circles, Hans said. "That was a nice surprise, wasn't it?"
Lifting her head, Elsa asked in a teary voice."It was?"
"My beautiful daughter is even more like her wonderful mother, how could it be anything else?"
Letting out a teary laugh, Elsa said."You really do always know what to say, don't you?"
Pulling a face, Hans chuckled. "Hardly, but this time I know exactly what is on your mind and I promise you don't have to worry. Hanne will be fine. She has us, her brother, cousins and Anna. And I suppose Kristoff."
This laugh he was happy to hear was far less teary.
"I don't want her to ever feel alone, Hans."
Pressing a kiss to her temple, Hans promised."She won't, my Queen. "
Staring into his eyes, Elsa whispered."No. No, she won't, will she. "
Placing a soft kiss on Hans lips, Elsa said. "Thank you for making sure my Christmas is merry, my love."
"Always, Elsa. Always."
