Anna x Kristoff: Trip
They went up the mountain on a fall day that hinted heavily of winter.
In fact, Elsa had warned them that it might snow and had suggested that Anna might consider wearing her new pair of boots instead of her old worn ones.
Anna considered this suggestion and disregarded it due to the old ones being far more comfortable. A decision that would have consequences later.
At this moment in time though, they were making their way up the mountain to see Kristoff's family, the trolls.
Anna was very much hoping they would not be offering them food and had in fact smuggled a picnic basket full of her favorite sandwiches and finger food on the sled for them to eat later.
Secretly, she was hoping that Kristoff was maybe thinking of having a very important conversation with her.
They had been courting for well over a year now, after all.
Plus, he was looking awfully nervous at the moment and kept starting conversations with her and then letting them trail off into silence as he would get caught up in his thoughts and forget to answer her.
Something that both gave her hope and at the same time made her a tad miffed.
If they were talking he should be paying attention to her! It was only polite. Then again, he was raised by trolls...
Thus the trip continued on with Anna's feelings getting ever more muddled along the way.
The trolls were as ever delighted to see the young couple, making much of their adoptive son and of course dropping some none-so-subtle hints about marriage and grand-babies.
At first Anna was able to wave these comments off with a laugh, but every time Kristoff denied the possibility, the hurt and anger in her heart grew.
Finally with what felt like the hundredth hint and flip remark in response by Kristoff, Anna had had enough.
Flying into a rage that took even her by surprise, nasty words exited her mouth at great speed and looking at all the horrified faces—not Kristoff's though, he just looked...guilty— Anna let out a heartfelt scream. Turning on her heel, she ran down the mountain path towards home.
Of course during this time no one was paying any attention to the weather. Which was a shame, for as she was making her way across a small stream, the wind suddenly picked up, bringing with it a blinding snow.
Moving forward, hoping she was correct in the placement of the stepping stones, Anna's old worn out shoe slid across its smooth wet surface and with a splash, she fell into the water.
Snow flew around Anna as she pulled herself from the spring, dress sopping wet and ankle throbbing.
Drawing her knees up to her chest, Anna began to weep as the confusion and anger and most of all disappointment, began to bleed out of her.
It was like this that Kristoff found her. Kneeling down next to her, he tried to wrap his arms around her in an attempt to pick her up but Anna was having none of it.
Shoving him away, she turned angry eyes set in a determined tear streaked face towards him and cried.
"Do you love me at all?! Was this some kind of trick to get in the royal family's good graces? Because if it is I have to hand it to you, you're an even better actor than Hans was."
Bewildered, Kristoff leaned towards her, hands outstretched beseechingly. "Trick? Anna, you know me. I could never trick anyone. I don't understand why you're saying this to me. I know I've been acting weird but it wasn't anything like that. I promise."
The hurt on his face stung her heart but the old ugly insecurities had reared their heads by now and in a choked voice she replied.
"You didn't answer my first question."
Anger was starting to flare in the depths of Kristoff's eyes but he said calmly and firmly. "You know I love you more than anything, Anna."
Crossing her arms over her chest, Anna stared down at the muddy ground at her feet as snow gathered on her shoulders and crowned her hair in white.
"Then why don't you want to marry me?"
For a very long moment, Kristoff was silent. Then shuffling forward, he lifted Anna's chin in his own mud streaked mitten and looking right at her said firmly. "I do want to marry you, Anna, more than anything. I just don't think I'm ready to. Do you think you could give me time? I promise I won't make you wait forever."
Studying his face in silence, Anna finally asked. "Why aren't you ready?"
Giving her a crooked smile, Kristoff said in a voice laced with insecurity. "I'm not used to all the people and responsibility. But I will, I will get used to it, Anna. I'm sure I will."
Placing her mittened hand over the one he still cradled her cheek with, Anna replied slowly.
"I'm not used to it either, so let's help each other get used to it together. It will be good practice for when we get married. And I will wait for that, Kristoff. I will wait for you. Forever."
Smiling a watery smile, Kristoff pulled her close and kissed her hard, then gently.
Resting her forehead against his for a moment, Anna suddenly felt every ache and pain the tumble had given her and upon trying to stand with his help noticed that the sole of her left boot had somehow come off.
Letting out a tired laugh she looked down at it and said. "Elsa was right."
Lifting her up in his arms, Kristoff turned back toward the troll village and said. "True, but I can't say I'm sorry for the excuse to have you in my arms."
Wrapping her arms around his neck and laying her head on his shoulder, Anna whispered. "No, I'm not sorry for that, either."
The trip back was filled with laughter, stolen kisses and ever so many shared plans for the future.
