A Mother's Love
Chapter Five: Maura Dorthea Isles
"Mother, I made a grave mistake!"
Constance drowsily opened her eyes to see her daughter at her doorway. "W-What? Honey? What are you doing in here at…" Constance looked to the clock only to flinch in alarm. "10:15 A.M?!" she exclaimed in surprise.
Thanks to her daughter and Jane, she hardly slept a wink. She had no idea her daughter could make those noises. Despite the oddness, she couldn't help but be proud of Jane for her prowess.
She wondered if Ange-
No…That thought had to end immediately.
Constance glanced at her daughter's tearful face and gingerly patted the bed as she asked "Honey…What happened?"
"A lot…." Maura replied as Constance watched her daughter sat down on her bed. "Mother...Jane and I had sex last night."
"I would have never guessed from the moans," Constance said with a dry tone.
"Mother!" Maura gasped in surprise which made Constance grin.
"Do forgive me but you were quite loud…I was barely able to sleep as a result," Constance teased as her daughter's face began to redden. Despite their previous distance, the pair were still very open with one another.
It was possibly due to that distance they had that made them so open so small miracles. "It was obvious you enjoyed it," Constance said.
"I-I did…" Maura replied softly. "She was a fantastic lover….She knew me inside and out. I told her that I love her but I was still hurt over everything that had happened and originally, I wanted us to have sex as a goodbye…But…I made a horrible mistake in saying that and now I fear that I lost Jane for good…"
On the outside, Constance was as cool as a cucumber but inside, she was highly annoyed. When Jane had come over, she thought that by letting Jane in, it would speed up the recovery of their relationship, not hinder it further.
How agitating.
Perhaps she could recover this…
"I see…But you told her that you love her…Did she…?" Constance drifted off.
"She did," Maura said, the sadness breaking away momentarily to show a happy smile before it melted away back to sadness. "Why did I do something so foolish? Why didn't I just tell her that I wanted her back into my life instead of pushing her away again?"
"It makes perfect sense. You are still hurting from what occurred between you two and your biological father at the warehouse," Constance said.
Maura flinched in surprise and turned to her. "How did you know?" Maura asked.
"I spoke to Jane last night," Constance said. "She explained everything."
"I see…" Maura mumbled.
"She explained everything from the jump and it obviously bothered her greatly," Constance continued evenly. "But my question is, why didn't you tell me that you knew about Paddy? Why did I have to find out from her?"
"I-I didn't know how to broach the topic," Maura admitted before Constance saw anger appear in her daughter's expressive eyes. "But now that we have….Why didn't you tell me that you knew him? You knew I always wanted to know about my biological parents and you knew all along. Why didn't you tell me?" Maura asked.
"I was afraid," Constance replied softly.
Maura looked shocked by the admission and Constance couldn't blame her. She knew she kept a lot close to her heart so to admit something like this would shock her daughter to the core. "When we first met, he presented himself as a good man and admittedly, I found him very charming…but one day, he came to me with you and despite my normal demeanor, it was the happiest day of my life but it was also bittersweet because the good man I thought he was wound up being a mask. He was not a good man. He belonged to a life of crime that he claimed took your biological mother. He seemed to imply his father was the cause of this but from what Jane explained, I now have my doubts. Regardless, he begged me to take you in and I did."
"What was the condition?" Maura asked.
"That he never attempt to contact you," Constance replied. "I know that it was unfair to request a thing but he seemed relieved when I made that request and was a man of his word until recently." Constance could see the anger in her daughter's eyes and saw her start to speak but Constance instantly raised a hand. "I can see the fire in your eyes about my choice however, you know the rule. Always see the other side of the coin," Constance told her.
Maura closed her mouth but narrowed her eyes.
"Your father always wanted to tell you about him but I couldn't. I told Jane that had I told you the truth or even his name, his sacrifice for giving you up would have been in vain and you are headstrong enough to try and find him. And if you did…"
Maura's eyes softened.
"I may not show it often but I truly love you and I wish no harm to come to you but it seems that worry was founded. You found out Colin was your half-brother and well… Le reste appartient à l'histoire…"
"I needed to know," Maura whispered. "But if you had told me then what I know now, I wouldn't have pried…Despite how I was raised, you took me in and gave a wonderful life and this life lead me to where I am now and I appreciate it…I don't want you to think otherwise mother…"
"I know honey…" Constance said. "And now that you do know the truth, I need to tell you something as well regarding your situation with Jane…" Constance said. "I'm honestly disappointed in how you handled it. Both this situation you're in now and the one that caused this rift in the first place. Jane is your best friend and the woman you love but she is also a very renowned detective of this city. She had already broken several laws to protect you from what she told me last night. On the opposite end of this, Paddy is a well-known criminal who shot a federal agent and had the gun pointed at Jane. She had to worry about the agent's life, her life but most of all, she had to worry for your life. The woman she admitted she loved."
"But she-" Maura began but Constance shot her a look, which made her argument die out.
"Jane accepted responsibility for the Agent but she told him Paddy was in town while she was under the influence of alcohol and need I remind you how loose lips get when that occurs?" Constance questioned as she kept her pointed look on the shamed Maura.
"You also didn't take into account that Jane trusted the agent to keep his word and not show up but he did. That was his choice. Jane did not ask for him to come. He came on his own violation and he paid for it by being shot," Constance paused for a moment to observe her daughter's increasing guilty expression and inwardly frowned.
She hated having to do this to Maura but her daughter made some grave errors and if her plan with Angela was going to work, she had to get her daughter to realize this.
Going for the kill, Constance said "You are usually so understanding and yet, you decided that the best course of action to all of this was not listen to the woman you love, who made many moves that could have gotten her fired and arrested for aiding and abetting a dangerous mobster, just to protect your feelings. Instead take the side of a murder who gave you up, who had shot an agent and had the gun aimed at the one who would sacrifice everything for you."
"And then to make it worse, you shattered Jane's heart by refusing to have anything to do with her. And if you didn't sink low enough, when she came to you, heart in her hands, you tell her you love her, have sex with her and then tell her that you are still upset and still want to go through with leaving her….After all of that, now you realize you made a mistake?" Constance finished.
The room was quiet for a moment before Constance saw the tears begin to fall down Maura's face. "I-I don't deserve her…" Maura admitted tearfully, her voice causing heartache within the older woman. "She may have run from her emotions but she's never shied away from me…
Constance remained silent before she said "Do you think she will keep her word in keeping her distance?"
"Jane always keeps her promises…And she promised me she would," Maura said softly.
"And yet you still want to be with her?" Constance asked.
"More than anything," Maura replied.
"You will have to show her that…But for now, you also need to make with what you are feeling," Constance told her. "Because despite my words, you need closure from this as well and I have a feeling whatever you find out from Paddy, you'll need Jane to weather that storm."
Maura nodded before she stood up and said "You're right mother. I want to get closure and the best way to do that is to speak to Paddy himself and find out the truth in if he would have shot Jane or not along with whether or not his claim about my biological mother's death is true or not. Once I do that…then I will focus on bringing Jane back to me…But I have to know first."
"I know and if you want, Angela and I can accompany you when you go," Constance said but then she blinked.
She did not mean to invite Angela to something like this.
"Angela…Yes…Since Jane won't be there, you and Angela will be the next best option," Maura thought. "Marvelous. We shall go tomorrow!"
She was going to have to tell Angela tonight for their da….celebration dinner….
She just hoped Angela would be understanding about it…
But in her gut, she had a feeling that the short brunette would feel happy at being included in something like this.
And that made Constance smile inwardly.
"Do you know what the most difficult part of all of this is?" Constance sighed out.
"What?" Maura asked.
"He broke his promise to keep you away from his life. He's causing all of this pain and strife between you and the woman you love. His past has made me fearful for years that you would be caught in his bloodshed and yet, I find that I can't fully hate him," Constance admitted.
"Really?" Maura asked. "Why?"
"Because he gave me the most priceless treasure I could ever ask for in you," Constance replied tenderly. Tears filled Maura's eyes again but this time, it was tears of joy, Constance smile as Maura wrapped her up in a tight hug.
"J'aime ta mère," Maura mumbled softly.
"Je t'aime trop chérie." Constance replied sweetly.
"Annie…We have to do this…."
"I can't. We can find another way! We can make this work somehow…Some way!"
"Your siblings need you Annie, we both know that and my mother needs to leave the country. No matter how much my heart is yelling at me to be selfish, to claim what I've wanted for so long…We are needed my love…"
"You're the best thing that has ever happened in my life! I can't lost you now that I have you!"
"Angela…"
"Why is this all so hard….?"
"Because we were both raised on that golden rule. Family comes first…"
"If I lose you now…I doubt I'll ever find someone like you again…"
"You'll never lose me Annie…My heart is yours. No matter where I go or what happens, as long as my heart beats, it beats for you, Mi Amor…"
"Ma!"
Angela's eyes snapped open as she looked around, panting heavily. She leaned up off the couch and groaned in comfort.
Thank goodness the couch was comfortable.
"Hey honey, what's going on?" Angela asked her daughter.
"I was worried…You were tossing and turning in your sleep," Jane said with a concerned look on her face before she saw that concern deepen. "Ma…You're crying…"
Angela touched her cheek and felt wetness beneath her fingertips.
"Oh…" Angela murmured softly. "Must have been dream…"
Why?
Why did she dream that dream?
She had buried that part of her a long time ago so why was she plagued by her now? Could it be the fact that her discussion with Frank regarding the divorce was bringing up feelings when she was loved once?
Or was it something more?
Shaking the thought from her head, Angela looked to her daughter and asked "What time is it?"
"It's…11:30 A.M," Jane replied softly. Jane sat in front of her and asked "What was the dream about?"
Angela shook her head and asked "What are you doing up?"
A flicker of annoyance appeared on Jane's face before she said "I went to see Maura…"
"You did?" Angela asked.
"Yeah…I….Kind of had sex with her," Jane hesitatingly said.
Angela blinked.
"I'm sorry what?" Angela asked with a tilt of her head.
"I slept with Maura…Told her that I loved her and then left her," Jane replied.
Angela nodded in thought before she said "I see…" Just then, her phone rang and she pulled it out and let out a groan of annoyance. "Damn it…Get dressed. Your father wants to meet me at his lawyer's office. Hopefully, he'll be less of an idiot."
"Him? Why?" Jane asked.
"He's….He's trying to completely annul our marriage," Angela said with disgust. "He pulled that stunt yesterday and I walked out of the office without another word…"
"What?!" Jane exclaimed. "How long was I gone?!"
"We can talk about it on the way...If you want to come of course," Angela said.
"Um, yes! This is more important than my bullshit," Jane said.
"Nothing is more important than you and what you're going through Jane," Angela told her daughter genuinely.
Jane paused and for a split second, Angela saw a warm smile appear on her face before she nodded and said "Let's go face pops."
Angela nodded.
The sooner she can get this over with, the sooner she could talk to Jane about last night and prepare for her dinner with Constance.
And those thoughts made her smile.
Rain: And that is the end of this chapter. So Constance and Maura had a heart to heart and some hard truth regarding Jane and also a glimpse at Angela's past but I wonder what could be bringing it up….Well, only one way to find out…Next time!
Jane: See you guys later!
